The Divine Wind is a love story, there isn't any doubt about that but is it just a love story? I don't think so. I think there is more to the novel than just love. There are other important themes and messages in the text aside from love. The story is about the effect war has on society, racial prejudice, and betrayal just as much as it is fixated on love. Friendships also play just as much relevance in the story as love.

The novel teaches you that war is a bad thing. Not only can war destroy your towns and cities, it can also break the closest of bonds and friendships between people. The story depicts the harsh reality of war but not only from the view of the frontline, but it also shows how war can be just as scary back home worrying about loved ones.

The novel revolves a lot around the racial prejudice shown by white Australians before, during and after wartime. Not only towards the enemy (the Japanese people living in Australia), but racism towards Aboriginals. The novel makes you think about how much the attitude of white Australians has changed since these times. In the story this is how Olive Webb described aboriginals "Your blackfellow cant make ethical or moral decisions,' Olive went on. 'He can't understand things like mercy or kindness. In his native state he is quite resourceful, but does he ever carry that through to something bigger or better? No. It's baffling.' It would be strange to hear someone talk of aboriginals like that at the present time.

Many examples of betrayal are demonstrated within the book. Some of these examples were between the characters Hart and Mitsy, Carl Venning and Alice, and also I think betrayal played a big part in the relationship involving Hart and Jamie. One principal example of betrayal was when Hart, during probably the worst moment of his life, when he found out that his sister was missing and his father was having a stroke he felt betrayed by Mitsy and a confused, scared, enraged Hart felt Mitsy was partly responsible and this is how he felt about the situation "Japanese fighter pilots had been shooting at Alice. I felt my face twist. I felt the spurt of burning tears, and I said to Mitsy 'You Bitch'". This is a prime example of why the book is not just about love.

Do my essay on The Divine Wind – A love story? CHEAP !

When I found out we were reading this book, from a glance, I thought the novel was going to be just another typical love story about how a boy who meets the girl of his dreams and they fall in love with each other and live happily ever after, that is what I would call a typical story just about love and have no real other meaning to it. The Divine Wind isn't just about love and if it was I wouldn't have enjoyed the novel as much as I did.

Stihl should definitely continue in the manufacturing of premium quality chainsaw. It has established the reputation as the world's leading producer of chain saw in 17 and Stihl is well known for its excellent customer service. Its worldwide corporate sales increased for more than twice since 17 to 174. . It should continue on expanding its market in the United States since the market in the US has been growing and its population is increasing too. The sales of pro and farmers market segment is expected to grow at 10 % per year.

Stihl is well known for its premium quality saws that are targeted primarily for the pro and farmers market segment. Moreover, the pro and farmers market segment would bring in a relatively high amount of revenues and profits. Plus, it is guaranteed that the pro and farmers market segments will replace their chainsaws within a few years (guaranteed revenues) since they use the chainsaw for heavy duty purposes. The farmers would not likely be able to use electrical chainsaw if they are working in rural areas that have a convenient access to electricity power.

Buy cheap Chain Saw industry term paper

I think Stihl should not manufacture chainsaws for the casual chainsaw market segment even though its demand has been increasing. Stihl should just let other firms enter the casual users market. Stihl should just focus on producing and exporting the chainsaw for pro and farmers market segments. The increase in sales of chainsaw for casual users might be temporary since it is just a social trend, energy crisis and increased leisure time. The casual users are also not willing to spend money on expensive chainsaws. They are more priced sensitive users. They also will not likely replace their chainsaws within a short period of time since they do not use the chain saw often or for heavy-duty purposes. The casual segment would probably prefer the lighter type of chainsaw like the electric chainsaw. Producing chainsaw for the casual segments will definitely change Stihl's image of being the world's leading producer of chainsaw for the pro and the farmers market segments.

Although the sales of chain saw would eventually flatten out, Stihl can still maintain a constant amount of revenues since the pro and the farmers would not stop using chainsaws. Pro and farmers market segments would only accumulate 45 % of the total chainsaw unit sales because of the increase use of chainsaw by the casual users. However, only about 15% of urban or casual users will buy chainsaw. Stihl should not fight for the smaller piece of the pie. Also, there are thirteen other manufacturers who target the casual user market. Therefore, Stihl should not enter the casual user market as it is too competitive and it won't be as profitable as the pro and farmer market segment.

people of varying racial and ethnic backgrounds but these thoughts apply to all mankind.

We often look at others with regard to their physical or personal characteristics by comparing them to those characteristics comprising our own makeup. We must see these as ingredients that yield a special product, never forgetting that we likely look and act as differently in the eyes of those same people. We are each equally unique and different.

If we are going to follow the "golden rule" of treating others as we wish to be treated, we cannot permit this uniqueness to be divisive. We cannot look at the world through prejudicial eyes. We must be like a child reared in an atmosphere of love and be able to mix with peers of varying colors and backgrounds.

I believe the root of much of the discord among our brothers and sisters of this world is the result of ignorance and fear. It is therefore incumbent on each of us to spread love and understanding at each opportunity. Failure to do this is denying our brothers and sisters a life of love and enjoyment of all that is around them.

Looking back on my own acts of prejudice in my lifetime, I regret each of them but they are part of my past. I can only hope that those who may have felt it have forgiven me. They were committed out of the ignorance I referenced above. The lesson; my penance is to spread the message of love and brotherhood wherever and whenever possible by means of the life I live and the words I say.

In a recent address on the CMU campus, Angela Oh, a renowned authority on racial matters stated our mission in a few simple but powerful words. "Our greatest goal must be to advance the common humanity."

"Life is short and we can never have too much time for gladdening the hearts of those who are traveling the dark journey with us. Oh be swift to love, make haste to be kind."

Henri Frederic Amiel

Meeting the king and Marie Antoinette

I was walking down the hall of the great mirrors, they were very big and filled the whole of the wall. The Palace was the most beautiful building I have ever seen. Every single wall and sealing had a lovely pattern of gold and a picture of angels sitting by the side of God, and all other kinds of pictures which made me want to live there .I was just looking and admiring the mirrors when in the reflection I saw King Louis. He looked at me and started to walk towards me. I was quite nervous as he spoke to me but I was very polite, as I didn't want to make him angry especially with these "sealed letters" going around. We got on to the subject of hunting and ridding and he offered me to go hunting with him. I was very flattered and decided to go. He let me ride Marie's horse white horse. We rode for hours and I had a lovely time. When we got back we just gave the horses to some workers and I went to untack the horse I rode. I was taking off the saddle when the king came in and shouted as loud as I have anyone shout "What are you doing?". I told him I was just untacking the horse and he burst out laughing, he had a n enormous laugh and all the workers thought it was hilarious. He told me that the workers would do that so we went in side. I asked the king if I could interview him and he gladly agreed. This is what I asked and what he said. I asked what he thought had triggered off the French revolution, he said that it was probably because he married Marie who is Austrian and not French. I then plucked up my courage to ask if he thinks that he is ruling the country well, he got a bit angry and said that he was running it as his best capability and if anyone didn't like it then they should talk to him about it, not to make a massive fuss. I then asked him if he thought that he would be replaced and he said only when I die. We were then interrupted by a servant calling dinner

At the table I only expected a little snack but a massive leg of chicken came out for him and a half a leg for me. I looked at the leg and I knew that wouldn't be able to eat it. Just then Marie came storming in and shouted at the King to go n sort put some finance problem. To my surprise he got up and I thanked him for everything and he told me to sit up a bit more when I was hunting, so0 I took his advise and he went. I then thought I better go but Marie started to talk to me a and she saw that I couldn't eat my chicken and told me to leave it . She said she hated it when Louis gave her loads to eat. She then offered me to go to her castle the "Petit Trianon". I said that I would love to so we went by horse it was great. When we got there we danced and went to the market and then went on a lovely sight-view on horses. We came back and had a banquet where everybody was aloud to come and I got to dance with other people. I then went back to France and Marie gave me her horse then went home on it. I had to say I had a wonderful day.

Haste me to knowt, that I with wings as swift

As meditation or the thoughts of love

May sweep to to my revenge.

This is Hamlets immediate statement of revenge upon learning from the Ghost that his fathers death was the result of murder. Hamlets immediate reaction to the demands of revenge is that he will act upon it with the proverbial speed of thought. The irony is that Hamlet does not revenge with any speed. But it is worth noting that Hamlet uses the term meditation which to me seems antithetical to speed. Thoughts of love through the play are also scant. Hamlet rejects love. So, the initial impression is one of celerity, its Hamlets use of words that hint otherewise.

Your second quote, here is the whole speech by Hamlet.

And therefore as a stranger give it welcome.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,

Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.(175)

But come,

Here, as before, never, so help you mercy,

How strange or odd someer I bear myself-

As I perchance hereafter shall think meet

To put an antic disposition on- (180)

That you, at such time seeing me, never shall,

With arms encumberd thus, or this headshake,

Or by pronouncing of some doubtful phrase,

As Well, we know, or We could, and if we would,

Or If we list to speak, or There be and if they might, (185)

Or such ambiguous giving out, to note

That you know aught of me - this do swear,

So grace and mercy at your most need help you.

To get a handle on this speech you really need to start back at the beginning of the sequence when Marcellus and Horatio rejoin Hamlet. Horatio notes Hamlets wild and whirling words. This can really make Hamlet hard to understand but that is the point. His exited state is portrayed through the fragmented nature of his dialogue. In literary terms this is known as anacoluthon. This is a grammatical interruption or lack of implied sequence within a sentence.

Hamlet is trying to extract an oath from his two companions. Horatio says Propose the oath,... (160)

Hamlet responds,

Never to speak of this that you have seen. (161)

He then moves to another spot and continues,

Never to speak of this that you have heard. (168)

Then within the above quote,

Here, as before,...(177)

That you,...never shall (181)

...note (186)

That you know aught of me-this do swear. (187)

In between Hamlet is interjecting explanatory specifics of how he may look or how he may sound. This is also where Hamlet offers his antic disposition often taken as an ackowledgement that Hamlets coming madness is an act. Dover Wilson in his book, What Happens In Hamlet, argues that Hamlet does have moments of madness and that his statement is made to give the others the impression that it is feigned when it is in fact real. Of course this is Wilsons interpretation. Willaim Shakespeares Hamlet

Tennyson uses a variety of techniques in his poem 'Mariana'. One of the main techniques, which he uses to give the reader a further insight and depth into the poem, is setting.

Tennyson starts the poem 'Mariana' off by using an epigraph "Mariana in the moated grange" which already makes you think off a lonely place as 'moated' symbolises something difficult to get to.

Tennyson tells us about the setting many times. The first stanza starts with 'the blackest moss' and 'were thickly crusted' this makes the reader think of something old, untidy and uncared for. There is also a sense lack of movement as Tennyson talks about the latch being 'unlifted'. The place feels very lonely and the word is even used in the stanza, it feels very remote, where there are not many visitors. Assonance 'dreary, aweary' is used in the stanza to make the poem seem very drawn out and slow.

A lot of depressing language is used which, adds emphasis to the lonely dark place where Mariana is. Phrases that are used are 'Thickest dark did trance the sky' which makes the reader think of a big black cover over the sky, almost smothering her. Another phrase which is also used is 'glooming flats' which symbolises monotonous lands around her so there I no one as far as she can see. Monotonous means never ending you could also say it means nothing is ever going to change this woman will always be very alone. Monotonous could be described as the structure of the poem as well, the poem doesn't go anywhere and the continuous repeat of the refrain helps shows this.

Write my Essay on Explore Tennnyson's use of setting in the poem 'Mariana'. for me

Tennyson uses the setting to also make the character appear very miserable; the only object she can see is a poplar tree. Phallic personification is used as a symbol to say there is a lack of a man in her life as the shadow is the only thing in her bed, to make the point that the woman who lives on the grange is very secluded.

Tennyson also uses repetition of words to add emphasis to the very remote place, Tennyson repeats the words 'gray', 'lonely', and 'old' which all symbolise no change, nothing at this place is new, nothing ever moves. When the refrain is repeated several times its almost as if she is tired of life, so once again the poem appears to be never ending.

Tennyson could use setting as a voice for himself, as if to say nothing in society changes poets are as outcast as women. Its appears Tennyson is frustrated at being cast out of society. Tennyson living so far away in Lincolnshire can only make the problem much worse. There are no other humans nearby therefore there can be no change, its as almost as if the landscape is synaesthetic.

Ancestry and Lineage

During the Anglo-Saxon period in history, there were many great kings and rulers. In a world which every male was know as his father's son, ancestral heritage played a major role in who became the distinguished leaders of their time. The folk epic Beowulf illustrates the importance of one's lineage and background through the words and actions of three specific characters. The watchman, Wealtheow, and Beowulf himself show the significance ancestry and the value of order of succession within noble families.

Seeing Beowulf and his men coming ashore, the watchman , guard of the Danish coast, questions Beowulf of his business. Beowulf informs the watchman his reason for being there is to assist Hrothgar in the slaying of Grendel. He also explains he is the son of Ectheow, a famous and dignified noble. "…My father was famed far and wide, a noble lord, Ectheow by name-…" (15). The watchman, noticing in Beowulf's appearance that he is a noble warrior as well, directs Beowulf and the rest of the Geats towards Hrothgar. The watchman's decision to allow the army of the Geats into the Danish land was most likely influenced by the knowledge of Beowulf's father. Beowulf's ancestry became a critical part in permitting him to see Hrothgar and eventually defeating Grendel.

Wealtheow, being a good mother, values the importance of family and is always looking out for the best interest of her sons. After Beowulf successfully kills Grendel, Hrothgar, in his happiness, offers him the position of king once he passes away. Wealtheow steps in stating that that position should rightly go to Hrothgar's nephew, Hrothulf, until their sons come of age. She tells Hrothgar to be generous with praise and gifts but do not adopt him as his own. She believes that Hrothulf will "…repay ours sons most generously if he remember all we did for his benefit and enjoyment when he was a boy" (16). Wealtheow know the significance of keeping her sons as heirs of the throne to continue their family lineage as nobles of the Danes.

Beowulf, like Wealtheow, also recognizes the importance of order of succession within families. Not wanting to disturb this succession, Beowulf declines the queen of the Geats' offer of the throne upon her husband, Hygelac's, death . Instead of rushing for the throne himself, Beowulf supports Hygelac's son the rightful heir. However, Beowulf does offer to take on the guardianship of the young heir until he comes of age. Through this gesture of loyalty and respect, Beowulf proves himself ready for the throne.

Throughout Beowulf, lineage and family ancestry were revealed as important aspects to any Anglo-Saxon epic story. The watchman, recognizing Beowulf's father, allowed him to proceed with his mission, Wealtheow discouraged her husband's thought of giving the throne to anyone besides someone within their family, and Beowulf decline the offer of the throne because he did not want to disturb the order of succession to the throne and interfere with the rightful heir. Beowulf isn't only a story of heroic deeds, but also it reveals the concept of identity which is clearly essential within the poem.

Living on the beautiful island of Okinawa, there was a lot to experience at the White Beach. I remember the overwhelming site I behold with each visit. My memory consisted of the blue sky, pure sand, intense sun, noticeable breeze and sparkling water. For me, White Beach was my place to gather peace of mind. Everything the beach had to offer I would take in. I look back now and miss the occasions spent in this sweet escape.

Walking down to the beach, I pass by the high standing rocks; their face having the appearance of a hard and rough surface. The darkness of the color draws in hands to caress; only to retreat in response to the razor like surface.

Closing my eyes briefly, I can feel the breeze tickling my arm hairs. In my ears I can hear the sound of gently breaking waves. The distinct taste of the mist seems to be clinging to my lips, leaving the taste of fresh salt to savor.

Standing with my shoes on, I feel a fool for not standing bare in the sand, knowing the warmth that is offered up by the glistening sand. Stepping out of my shoes and into the bright surface, I feel the heat sting from the afternoon baked sand. The whiteness of the shore is blinding as I gaze around. As my eyes are watering with sensitivity, I start to walk down the shore to do the ever-popular act of accumulation shells and what ever else the ocean has offered up for collection. Placing each shell in the palm of my hand, observing each and every one, I notice tier individuality. Each one having a unique color, a distinguished chip in their architecture, or a possible inhabitant. Many of times, thinking back and remembering, I had picked up what appeared to be a long abandoned shell, only to discover scurrying legs. The results of the animals ticklish and surprising act was the quick dropping of my hands contents. My heart always felt the immediate surprise.

Walking more along the seemingly unending shore, I slowly drifted into the water. Amazing coolness rushes through and chills my body, unleashing a rash of goose flesh all through my skin. The clearness of the water is an overwhelming sight. All depths are visible. Small tropical fish swimming around in schools at my legs as I slowly walk deeper into the aquarium world. I take a spontaneous dive under the surface of the water, giving my face a rush of the chilled salty water. It brings the potent taste for saltwater to my mouth and the ever so remembered sting to my nose. Being emerged in the water, I feel refreshed.

Making my way back to the dry land, I laid upon the hot sand and bake in the rays reaching down from the sun. Stretched out on the sand I enjoy the offerings of the beach. I set my mind free of all worldly thoughts, putting myself in my perfect place.

My time spent on White Beach has left me in awe of beauty. Having lived on the island of Okinawa, Japan, I am happy to say i would live there again. If the only reason was to experience the companionship of my beauteous lieu, I would spring at the opportunity without a moment of hesitation.

Censorship Essay

Censor means to examine in order to suppress or delete any object that may seem objectionable. I believe censorship is wrong because certain materials may not be objectionable to some people. Censorship is used in radio and television to prevent the corruption of people's minds. Censorship is wrong because individuals should have the freedom to listen or watch what they want, whether or not it offends some, without interference.

The television is one place where censorship is strongly used in many different ways. One of the oldest and most common ways used to censor inappropriate words is to use a "bleep." I disagree with this method because whatever these people are saying is just words. Remember the saying "sticks and stone may break my bones but words will never hurt me?" These words will not harm anyone and if people are offended they don't have to listen. Another popular method of censoring television is to cit out scenes. TV stations will cut out a certain scene or scenes from a movie or television. I disagree with this method because it changes the way that the producer of these shows or movies intended them to be. If TV stations plan on cutting out scenes they should not air the show or movie at all. One last method of censorship commonly used in television is rating labels. Again, this is a method of censorship I disagree with. Although these ratings allow parents to protect their children from bad things, if a show is on TV it should be viewable by all audiences. Also most things being censored will be seen by most people in their lives anyway. Censorship in TV is a bad thing and should be reconsidered.

The music industry is a place where people experience censorship. One form of censorship in music is to play and edited version of a song. While this method filters out some harmful words, I think this is bad because it changes the musicians original song. This censoring takes out parts of the song he intended to be there. I think the radio shouldn't play these edited version, but play unedited version. Another popular method of censorship is to put parent advisory labels on CD's. These labels are bad because they don't allow underage people to buy certain CD's. Why should these underage people not be able to listen to bad words or inappropriate themes if it is part of real life. The government is trying to put a blanket over children's eyes until they get older. They want to brainwash the children so they will stop corruption in the world . One last way music is censored, just like television, is using "bleeps". These bleeps are terrible, annoying, and useless. They ruin songs that you are listening to. Who wants to sit and listen to a song littered with "bleeps", because I sure don't! If people don't want to hear "bad" words they should buy country music, and leave the rest of the world alone.

Censorship is a terrible thing and it should be outlawed at some point. The government should stop trying to control the way the U.S. citizens live and focus on more important issues like the war in Afghanistan. Citizens should be left alone to live and not be constantly bothered by the annoyances of censorship.

Please note that this sample paper on Censorship is for your review only. During the latter half of the fifteenth century was a time when the Europeans

had great intellectual discoveries. However, this time might not have

been so amazing had Johannes Gutenberg not invented the printing press in

Write my Essay on History of cardano for me

1450. With the printing press now available, many books were published

and Universities like Bologna, Paris, and Oxford became places for great

education. These were not only times for mathematical improvement but

also artistic careers blossomed.

Summa de Arithmetica was produced by Luca Pacioli. He stressed the

solving of linear and quadratic equations. This book was great because it

was one of the first steps toward the type of arithmetic that we use

today. Pacioli was great with arithmetic but when he came across trying

to solve the cubic he could not do it and said it was impossible. Later,

in the late 1400's, a man by the name of Scipione del Ferro took the

challenge of proving Pacioli wrong.

Ferros first did something quite interesting when he turned the standard

cubic equation (x^+mx=n) into a "depressed cubic" (ax^+cx+d=0). This

step was very important and so Ferro chose to keep his findings an

absolute secret. He chose to do this because he could use the depressed

cubics in scholarly battle and assure himself victory. It wasn't until

Ferro almost met his death that he passed on his solution. The lucky boy

was Antonio Fior.

With his new knowledge Fior challenged Fontana, a.k.a Tartaglia, in 155. Right before the deadline Tartaglia figured out how to solve depressed cubics and made Fior look like a fool. Shortly after this a fruity man named Gerolamo Cardano entered the game of Xtreme math. He desired to learn much more about cubics from Tartaglia.

Cardano made such great contributions to the world that he felt he needed a biography written about himself and who better to do the job than Cardano! Once he was done with this thrilling story Cardano began to pratice medicine in Sacco. Here he indulged in gambling and even wrote a book on games of chance. Even with all these other activities going on, Cardano managed to become the greatest doctor in Europe. Geralomo Cardano had become a fabulous man. However, his son didn't exactly follow his father's footsteps. In the 1550's, Giambattista killed his wife and was beheaded in 1560. In fact, Geralomo somewhat took after his son. In 1570 he was sent to jail on charges of heresy. Just years after he got out of jail, Cardano died in 1576.

Now, back to the proof. Cardano wrote many letters to Tartaglia asking him for the solution to the cubic; all of these were rejected. It wasn't until 15 that Tartaglia revealed his knowledge to Cardano.

Ludovico Ferrari became Cardano's slave and friend in the 150's. Together they worked to solve advanced depressed cubics and made great progress. They discovered the solution for the quartic polynomial equation. Later they traveled to Bologna and read some of del Ferros' solutions to the cubic and got exactly what they needed to create the great theorem. Oh yeah, they took Tartaglia's goods and played him like a fool to create this theorem.

Jealousy is a significant theme in the slave narrative Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs. This theme is not only significant because it effects the emotions of characters, but because of what its causes, results and signifies. Thus, through jealousy Jacobs illustrates, displays and portrays the negative, vile and immoral aspects this particular emotion produces. By unmasking and revealing jealousy¡¯s unmistakably dire consequences Jacobs is also trying to convince the reader about certain things. She desires the reader to realize how jealousy brings about pitiful emotions and situations to not only the slaves but to the masters as well. Jacobs is firmly trying to exemplify how slavery is not only unfair to the slaves but how it produces conflict in the family as well.

Jealousy is most strongly apparent in the character of Doctor Flint.

His feelings of jealousy arouse trouble not only for Linda (Jacobs) but within his family as well. The supposedly married Dr. Flint desires and lusts over his slave Linda. However, Linda despises him and provokes him by relentlessly pushing him away or doing things that are aggravating and taxing to him. Through her words and actions Dr. Flint feels extreme jealousy. Thus, Dr. Flint behaves irrationally and unfairly. He not only verbally abuses her but he even goes as far as physically hurting her. He even cuts her hair a jealous fit. He truly loses all rationality because of his feelings of jealousy and lust.

However, it is not only Dr.Flint who behaves negatively and erratically

because of his jealousy. His feelings and actions in consequence affect Mrs.Flint as well. She is so overcome with feelings of jealousy and envy for Linda that she can not act civilly or morally. Not only does this supposedly Southern Christian women turn away Linda when she needs help, but she condemns her for her husbands actions. She is in a truly pathetic situation. Mrs.Flint can only voice her jealousy and anger on Linda. She

can not say or manifest true emotions to her husband who has hurt her the most.

Linda¡¯s unfortunate situation is another product of Dr.Flint¡¯s jealousy. Linda not only directly suffers from Dr.Flint¡¯s advances, but it causes her to react in irrational, unfounded ways. Linda first enters into a relationship with another man out of spite. Not only does she have a meaningless relationship with this man, but she also has two of his children as well. Linda does not love this man, nor this she believe she or her children have a future with this man. However, anger and spite caused by Dr.Flint¡¯s jealousy causes her to do these things.

All in all, Harriet Jacobs tries to show in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl how such an emotion like jealousy causes and brings about problems and conflicts. She wants the readers, particularly the northern white women during her time to see the evils brought about by slavery. She wants them to realize how slavery is not only wrong to the individual who is the slave, but how it affects the others such as the family and the estate as well. She displays how slavery can ruin the fundamentals and foundation of family. Hence, Harriet Jacobs illustrates how slavery produces malicious, obtrusive consequences for all¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦

During my junior year in college, I traveled to Sub-Sahara Africa where I spent five months studying various aspects of the Swahili culture on the coast of Kenya. As an economics major, I was interested in obtaining a better understanding of the economic limitations of a third world country. The program focused on learning about Swahili life, language, and culture through firsthand experiences. By living with families and becoming intimately involved with everyday life, I became more aware of the social struggles and economic difficulties of the Muslim culture that populated the coastline.

The highlight of the program was the independent study, which allowed students to research a topic of choice for five weeks. I decided to travel to the island of Lamu, hoping to gain a better understanding of population growth trends and family planning efforts. I began by working at the local family planning center and talking to women in the community about their understanding of modern contraception. After a short period on the island, I came to the conclusion that there was a direct correlation between the amount of education received by a woman and her decision to use such methods. Then with the local female leaders, I helped to develop a program to educate the women about modern contraception. I consider my project to have been successful, because the number of women attending the family planning center grew slightly and, more importantly, because a program was established to increase the knowledge level of women in the community.

I feel that my awareness of Kenyan culture rose dramatically with my experience abroad. I possess a stronger appreciation for the difficulties that developing nations face, as well as an understanding of the economic limitations that prohibit third world countries from advancing. Specifically, my experience studying family planning and population control provided a perspective on the issues facing women in third world societies. I believe that lack of education is the single greatest factor limiting the advancements of third world nations.

All the President's Men, by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, is the actual story of how Bernstein and his colleague Woodward broke the dramatic mystery that brought the downfall of President Richard M. Nixon. The Watergate scandal is one of the most unsettling political detective stories of the century. These journalists were able to put the scandalous pieces of the puzzle together and produce the series of stories that earned the Washington Post a Pulitzer Prize.

This book accurately portrays these two newspaper reporters working to expose criminal activities by a president, his advisors, and his political party. It displays the inner workings of a major newspaper, the Washington Post, and describes how many governmental institutions work. The book portrays a pivotal event in U.S. history and brings home the fact that Richard Nixon and his co-conspirators attempted nothing less than deliberate subversion of the U.S. Constitution and the democratic process.

This book also shows how everyone in the U.S. trusted and supported their elected officials and very rarely doubted them. It portrays how political figures can get away with sabotaging a national election and get away with it without having criminal charges filed against them. The novel portrays how politicians can get away with lying to the American people and how the American political culture is willing to do anything to win. It also depicts dedication to the president by the willingness of political figures to do anything to protect his reputation; even going as far as to take the blame for a crime they had nothing to do with. Woodward and Bernstein accurately portray American culture at the height of the Watergate scandal.

I have learned about the Watergate scandal through American history classes and information read, but this novel gave details I had never heard before. This book gave me a deeper understanding of the wide reaching political drama during the Nixon era.

Cheap University Papers on All the Presidents Men

Various illegal activities were conducted including burglary, wire tapping, violations of campaign financing laws, sabotage, and attempted use of government agencies to harm political opponents to help Richard Nixon win reelection in the 17 presidential elections. There were about 40 people charged with crimes related to the scandal. Most of them were convicted by juries or pleaded guilty. Watergate involved more high level government officials than any previous scandal.

When Woodward and Bernstein made a large implication, such as that of H.R. Haldemans involvement in the misuse of reelection funds, they employed as many as four or five sources. To make sure that they were not overly ambitious or biased, they frequently ran their story ideas, topics, and facts, by their editors, Sussman and Rosenfeld. This story was a potential boon to their career or a disaster in the making. They had to be certain. Bernstein and Woodward are acknowledged as being the ones to uncover Nixons dirty tricks.

Woodward and Bernstein emerged from the Watergate scandal as American heroes. To say they brought down the Nixon administration may be overdoing it; but they certainly tore the cover off a malodorous snake pit and brought it kicking and screaming into daylight.

'Music' is a word with several meanings, to some it is simply entertainment, a pleasure they enjoy indulging in when they are bored of going out. For others it is an escape, a sanctuary away from the world, society, and the chaos that surrounds their hectic, everyday lives. Music plays a very important role in the very fabric of our lives; often used to reflect how someone feels towards an individual or an object or to evoke suppressed emotions. A good friend of mine has written a dark, depressing song about how text messaging has taken away much from our interpersonal conversations. In general, music is a form of expression for ones feelings and emotions, whether stated straight out or expressed through metaphors, double-meanings and hidden messages.

Music can be used for many different reasons, and for many different occasions. Music at an Art Gallery is used to help the artist express his emotions and feelings derived from his work. Music at an elegant restaurant might be soft and calming, used to create a relaxed environment for an individual to enjoy their meal; music at a Mexican restaurant or at a kids restaurant is often lively and upbeat. At a party music is used to entertain, to make the occasion more enjoyable and to get the party-goers moving. A party can be called 'fun' based on the social group, yet in most cases the social group would not stick around if the music does not appeal to them.

People have a variety of personality types, which can be reflected by the types of music they listen too. Some people enjoy a good rhythmic sound that they can dance to; they appreciate music like R&B or Hip-hop. Other people enjoy just sitting and listening as the music weaves its melodious spell, whether the fairy-like strains of Enya or the rolling notes of Strauss. Others, such as myself, prefer intense music that is based on the use of drums and electric instruments. Still others would take a classic trance, rave or techno mix over anything else anyone could put together. Even different regions of the world favor different types of music - Eastern music is a thinner sound without a lot of blending of chords, while the West listens to music with a thicker sound and a greater blend of tones.

Although the understanding and interpretation of music varies among different age groups, many times the music is designed to attract one certain age over another. To the younger crowds, music such as heavy metal, Pop, R&B, or Rap containing loud, up-to-date, and exciting sound effects often seem more appealing. Adults, in many instances, appreciate the more calm and soft approach towards music, expressed in the 'classics' even if everyone has a different view of what the classics are.

Cheap Custom Essays on Pictures of Music

Interpretations of music vary among those understanding the nuances of the soul of music. Music can be used to set a mood in an environment in relationship to the setting in which it is played; such as in the different restaurants, or the scenes of a movie, play, or show, and so on. Music is an audio art. There may not be any colors on a canvas, yet music can still be used to create masterpieces that transcend visual art. Music evokes emotions and can give feelings power in a new dimension. All from the great equalizer, that which man across the world has in common - music.

Question 1 Use the criteria outlined in the Lawler "Expectancy Theory Model" to evaluate the design of Nordstrom's compensation system. How well does Nordstrom's compensation system fit the Expectancy Theory Model?

Jim is looking for a candidate who not only has the skills and capabilities to build a 50-person, $0 million business in -4 years, but also has the personality to work well with the existing leadership team at Bitstream. In addition, he is looking for someone who has experience working with networking products as well as with Value Added Reseller (VAR) and other indirect sales channels.

Formal education is not as important for this requirement as is experience. However, a bachelor's degree has been added as a minimum requirement per the industry norm. While it is possible for a candidate to be successful without a college degree (e.g. Bill Gates and Richard Branson), statistically a college degree is generally correlated with better performance.

Jim is also looking for a candidate with diverse experience who can quickly start to develop the new business. As Jim says, "The job requires someone who is a seasoned professional…we neither have the time nor the experience in-house to teach someone how to run this business ."

A complete list of requirements was compiled, based on the needs Jim expressed, in order to create a job profile for the position. This profile (see Appendix A) highlights the various knowledge, skills and abilities that are necessary for the position.

Question Based on this analysis, would you recommend that the compensation system at Nordstrom be changed? If so why and how would you do this and still maintain superior customer satisfaction and high sales?

Two key components of a candidate's qualification are background and personal factors . The background factors consist of education and experience, two factors that can be determined by reviewing a candidate's resume. It is important however, to validate the contents of the resume by contacting references and by interviewing the candidate.

Personal factors include, intellectual ability, personality, and motivation . As Jim has mentioned that skills alone are not sufficient for this position, the personal factors take on added importance in the selection process. Bitstream desires a quick learner who is not only results oriented, but also a team player. These particular characteristics cannot easily be determined via the resume, and need to be explored through effective interviewing (see question 4).

The requirements for the candidate have been cross-referenced with the background and personal factors to create a scoring matrix (see Appendix B). Each factor has then been given a scoring range (between 1 and ) with an explanation as to the meaning of each score. The score entered by the interviewer is multiplied by a weight, reflecting the importance of that factor or sub-factor, resulting in a total weighted score.

The purpose of this matrix is to attempt to formalize the interview process as well as to try to remove bias that may occur through 'gut-feel' decision-making.

Question Should Nordstrom change any of their other human capital management practices? If yes, how?

Please note that this sample paper on Nordstrom: Dissension in the Ranks? is for your review only. Motivation is the condition of providing something as need, belief, or desire that induces a character to act. In the historical fiction Night, by Elie Wiesel, action and setting contribute significantly to the motivation of the central protagonist, Elie. The overall effect of motivation presents the characters as retrogressing to savage-like behaviors. Motivation undoubtedly portrays a vital role in Elies demeanor.

Many times, actions of others influence the aspirations of the main character. One day in the story, the Kapo (head of prison block) Idek flies into his usual fanatical rage and beats Elie. A young Aryan French girl comforts him in German. Years later, Elie meets the woman in Paris. She reveals that she is Jewish and risked her life, trusting Elie by speaking to him in German. The girls words motivated and encouraged Elie to be determined and not give up. Elie, though physically beaten, is emotionally boosted by this. Another time, prisoners are so crowded into barracks that people are piled upon each other. Elie finds himself lying on top of Juliek, a Polish violinist he knew in Buna. Julieks soulful playing of Beethoven through the night elevates hope and soothes the audience of exhausted and dying men. Evidently, these actions display the causes to motivation of Elie.

Setting also affects the inclination of the central figure. At Auschwitz conditions are better and the fellow captives are not as brutal. The prisoners are even allowed to sleep in beds. Because of the more humane treatment, Elie and the residents of Auschwitz are more spirited. But at his stay in Birkenau, Elie is separated from his mother and sister, sees babies horrifically tossed into fires, comes close to death in the crematories, and is pummeled by guards. Dwelling in Birkenau, Elie loses hope and motivation but regains some of it at Auschwitz. On the last march to Gleiwitz, Elies father becomes weak, and catches a deadly case of dysentry. So while in Gleiwitz, Elie, is demoralized. Gleiwitz influences the motivation by reducing it. Either by diminishing or heightening motivation, the setting is important in determining the amount of it.

The total outcome of motivation leads Elie and furthermore the other characters to de-humanize, desiring only for food and water. Elie comes to not even caring for his father. The harshness of camp life weakens Elies filial devotion, which causes him to feel shame and guilt. He becomes concerned primarily with feeding himself, an animal-like behavior, and this instinct of self-preservation often outweighs concern for his fater. Later while the captives are transporting to Buchenwald, German workmen throw pieces of bread into one of the prison cars for entertainment. The prisoners becoume barbaric, trying for the scarce amount of nourishment. One man desperately hungry, kills his own father for a piece of bread. The prisoners are transformed into a pack of savage wolves, fighting each other for survival. The motivation to satisfy their hungers reduces them to acting like mere beasts.

Notably, setting and action contributes greatly to the motivation of the central character, Elie. The motivation causes Elie to desire more for food, and succumb human traits as revenge and generosity to animal-like behaviors. The horror of the holocaust that allowed people like Elie to be persecuted, should never be permitted to transpire again.

Montana 148 Summary of pages 5-151

As David was making his way back to the ranch from his ride, he noticed his father and uncle arguing near the riverbank. David inched closer without being noticed to observe what was going on. He was not able to hear however; he assumed they were discussing Marie's accusations. David had some brief passing thoughts about shooting his uncle and ending all of the pain associated with his uncle's actions. David's hands were shaking so badly holding the gun; he put it away knowing that he never would have been able to fire a shot. He stayed long enough to see them both walking back to the ranch knowing things were OK for he time being.

When the family arrived back home from the ranch, Marie seemed to be feeling much better. The next day David went fishing with his friends, only to come home to hear that Marie had been murdered in her bed. David was sent next door to the neighbors' house until a decision could be made about how to handle the situation. Later that evening, David told his father that Uncle Frank was at the house earlier in the day and Len (his deputy) had seen Frank go into the Hayden's house. Three days later, Wesley brought Frank to the house to discuss Marie's death. Frank did not deny his involvement and Wesley locked Frank in the basement until the legal ramifications were worked out. Later that evening Wesley's parents came to visit because Gloria (Frank's wife) had told them what Wesley had done with Frank. Julian demanded to speak with Frank but Wesley told Julian that he could not honor his request. Wesley began to try and explain what Frank had done to Marie and some of the other Indian girls. Julian would not believe Wesley and accused him of being jealous of his brother. When Wesley told his father that molestation was not the only crime Frank was being held for, Julian demanded to know the reason. Wesley told him that Frank murdered Marie. Julian refused to believe what he was saying and left the house.

The next day, a truck came to the Hayden's house with four men in it. They were sent by Julian to release Frank. Neither Wesley nor Len were around to stop the men from coming on to the property. David was in the house and the first to notice the men. He was in the process of calling out to his mother when she came out of the back bedroom carrying her husband's shotgun. She fired warning shots at the men and demanded, "You get away from there! Get away from the house-do you hear me?" All of a sudden Len McCauley came over from his house indicating the men should move away from the house, he said something else to them and they began to turn back towards their truck.

When Wesley received a message about the happenings at his home, he returned at once. He went over to speak with Len about the scene and found out from him that Julian had approached Len to release Frank and Len turned down his request. After this episode, Gail begged Wesley to let Frank go because she was afraid that something would happen and David would be hurt in the process. Wesley went down into the basement with the intention of releasing Frank, however, he came back up the stairs alone. Wesley said he could not release him because "Frank was guilty as sin. He told me as much." Gail was upset but she understood that Frank was not remorseful about his crimes and Wesley could not live with himself if he did not arrest his brother for the murder of Marie Little Soldier.

The Central Theme in

"A Doll's House"

by Amy Graziano

One of the central themes in the play "A Dolls House" is secession from society. It is demonstrated by several of its characters breaking away from the social standards of their time and acting on their own terms. No one character demonstrates this better than Nora.

During the time in which the play took place, society frowned upon women asserting themselves. Women were supposed to play a role in which they supported their husbands, took care of their children, and made sure everything was perfect around the house. Work, politics, and decisions were left to the males. Noras first secession from society was when she broke the law and decided to borrow money to pay for her husband's treatment. By doing this, she not only broke the law, but she also stepped away from the role society had placed on her of being totally dependent on her husband. She proved herself not to be helpless like Torvald implied You poor helpless little creature!

Noras second secession from society was shown by her decision to leave Torvald and her children. Society demanded that she take a place under her husband. This is shown in the way Torvald spoke down to her saying things like …worries that you couldnt possibly help me with, and Nora, Nora, just like a woman. She is almost considered to be property of his Maynt I look at my dearest treasure? At all the beauty that belongs to no one but me - thats all my very own? By walking out she takes a position equal to her husband and breaks societys expectations. Nora also breaks societys expectations of staying in a marriage, since divorce was frowned upon during that era. Her decision was a secession from all expectations put on a woman and a wife by society.

Nora's secessions are very deliberate and thought out. She knows what society expects of her and continues to do what she feels is right despite those expectations. Her secessions are used by Ibsen to show faults of society. In the first secession, Ibsen illustrates that despite Nora doing the right thing, it is deemed wrong and not allowed by society because she is a woman. While the forgery can be considered wrong, Ibsen is critical of the fact that Nora is forced to forge. Ibsen is also critical of societys expectations of a marriage. He illustrates this by showing how Nora is forced to play a role other than just being herself, which leads to the eventual deterioration of her marriage. Throughout the play, Nora is looked down upon and treated as a possession by her husband. She is something to please him and is used for show. He is looked upon as the provider and the decision maker. Society would have deemed it a perfect marriage. Ibsen is critical of the fact that the marriage lacked love and understanding, as shown by Torvald becoming angry with Nora for taking the loan and saving him.

The central theme of "A Dolls Houses," i.e., secession from society, was made to be critical of societys view on women and marriage. Ibsen used Noras secessions as an example to illustrate that societys expectations of a womans role in society and marriage were incorrect. Her only flaw of strength was that she had considered backing out and taking her own life. To completely turn the standards of what is perceived of women, Nora needed to stand up for what she did and face the consequences. Her decision to leave was the exclamation point on his critical view of society.
