The Medieval Period, a time of Lords and Knights, pilgrimages to visit famous shrines, and the profound power held by the church. Due to this power, certain members of the clergy take their authority a little too far and abuse their rights. Power is not easily contended, and there are certain characteristics to be administered in order for one to be a member of the power-holding church. Because of this limitation, the clergy are identified as ideal or hypocritical. Having to demonstrate actions of humbleness and simplicity are two of the many characteristics required among one member of the clergy, the Pardoner. In the poem, The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer displays the Pardoners physical description and personality as apart of his hypocrisy and how in the Pardoners Tale he manages to create a story during his pilgrimage of how greed can lead to corruption and death.

With the use of physiognomy and physical description, the author creates the Pardoner to be more female than male. Being called effeminate gives him a perfidious or hypocritical characteristic. Also the personality of the Pardoner is to be humble and selfless, being a member of the clergy, but he is the exact opposite endowing him a deceptive classification. He also manages to stratagem others into believing in holy objects to profit off of them when they are all made up. An example of his deceptiveness is shown when Chaucer writes, There was no pardoner of equal grace for in his trunk he had a pillow case which he asserted was Our Ladys

Veil on one short day, in money down, he drew more than the parson in a month or two. It is obvious that the pardoners attention is not set on the responsibility to the church especially when he made monkeys of the priest and congregation, but rather to fulfill his greed.

During his journey to Canterbury, the Pardoner devises a story stating, greed is the root to all evil. To have him create this story and say this instinctively identifies him as a hypocrite because he demonstrates the same attitude as the characters in the story. When the author writes the story of the Pardoner telling about the three riders, he exemplifies their greed by stating, And here is a lot of gold that is to be divided equally among us three nevertheless, if I could shape things thus so that we share it out- the two of us. The greed among the three riders eventually lead them to their deaths. Ironically, the intention in this story is to establish the truth of moral, but the pardoner does not even follow his own advice.

Buy The Pardoner's Tale term paper

The power given to the Pardoner is abused when he uses it for his own greedy implications and therefore confirms his hypocritical statement of greed being the root of all evil. By using the pilgrimage as the opportunity for the Pardoner to be shown allows the power of the church and the effect on the people come together. Jealousy is a significant theme in the slave narrative Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs. This theme is not only significant because it effects the emotions of characters, but because of what its causes, results and signifies. Thus, through jealousy Jacobs illustrates, displays and portrays the negative, vile and immoral aspects this particular emotion produces. By unmasking and revealing jealousy¡¯s unmistakably dire consequences Jacobs is also trying to convince the reader about certain things. She desires the reader to realize how jealousy brings about pitiful emotions and situations to not only the slaves but to the masters as well. Jacobs is firmly trying to exemplify how slavery is not only unfair to the slaves but how it produces conflict in the family as well.

Jealousy is most strongly apparent in the character of Doctor Flint.

His feelings of jealousy arouse trouble not only for Linda (Jacobs) but within his family as well. The supposedly married Dr. Flint desires and lusts over his slave Linda. However, Linda despises him and provokes him by relentlessly pushing him away or doing things that are aggravating and taxing to him. Through her words and actions Dr. Flint feels extreme jealousy. Thus, Dr. Flint behaves irrationally and unfairly. He not only verbally abuses her but he even goes as far as physically hurting her. He even cuts her hair a jealous fit. He truly loses all rationality because of his feelings of jealousy and lust.

However, it is not only Dr.Flint who behaves negatively and erratically

because of his jealousy. His feelings and actions in consequence affect Mrs.Flint as well. She is so overcome with feelings of jealousy and envy for Linda that she can not act civilly or morally. Not only does this supposedly Southern Christian women turn away Linda when she needs help, but she condemns her for her husbands actions. She is in a truly pathetic situation. Mrs.Flint can only voice her jealousy and anger on Linda. She

can not say or manifest true emotions to her husband who has hurt her the most.

Linda¡¯s unfortunate situation is another product of Dr.Flint¡¯s jealousy. Linda not only directly suffers from Dr.Flint¡¯s advances, but it causes her to react in irrational, unfounded ways. Linda first enters into a relationship with another man out of spite. Not only does she have a meaningless relationship with this man, but she also has two of his children as well. Linda does not love this man, nor this she believe she or her children have a future with this man. However, anger and spite caused by Dr.Flint¡¯s jealousy causes her to do these things.

All in all, Harriet Jacobs tries to show in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl how such an emotion like jealousy causes and brings about problems and conflicts. She wants the readers, particularly the northern white women during her time to see the evils brought about by slavery. She wants them to realize how slavery is not only wrong to the individual who is the slave, but how it affects the others such as the family and the estate as well. She displays how slavery can ruin the fundamentals and foundation of family. Hence, Harriet Jacobs illustrates how slavery produces malicious, obtrusive consequences for all¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦

Hamlet

Hamlet by William Shakespeare is a very tragic story. It is one that has stood the test of time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book for many reasons. First being that the reader was able to see inside the characters head especially Prince Hamlet. Shakespeare allowed you to see the process by which Hamlet's madness developed. This was very important because you are able to better understand his actions.Secondly the story is a timeless piece because the events that occur due to emotions still happen today. People will always be jealous , revengeful and people will always love.

The tragic tale of Prince Hamlet will make a lasting impression after reading it. From the opening scene it is tragic; it all begins with his father's death followed quickly by his mother's marriage to his uncle who has assumed the throne. Hamlet already overcome with grief and to make matters worse he is now seeing his father's ghost. His father then proceeds to tell him that his uncle murdered him. This is the start of the madness. Hamlet shuns Ophelia his true love , murders her father accidentally which then leads to Ophelia's suicide. He then decides to produce a play which replays his fathers murder proving that Uncle Claudius is guilty therefore justifying Hamlet's plot to kill him. The story then proceeds with Claudius plotting to kill Hamlet also. This is where Ophelia's brother Laertes comes into play. Being very much in Hamlet's position Laertes wants to avenge his father's death which means killing Hamlet. So he and Claudius hatch a plot to kill Hamlet with a poisoned drink or by a poisoned sword. So the duel takes place between Hamlet and Laertes which ends in Laertes death but not before he poisoned Hamlet with the sword. This is not the end though , Hamlet's mother Gertrude drinks the poisoned drink accidentally killing her. Before Laertes takes his final breath he reveals Claudius' plan which sends Hamlet into a fit of rage resulting in Claudius' death. Hamlet had now avenged his father's death, putting an end to his madness and an end to his life.

Shakespeare does an excellent job of opening the character to the reader especially Hamlet. This is evident when you read Hamlet's thoughts. You see his inner most feelings , the ones he refuses to show on the outside. Such as his feelings about Ophelia are completely different than what he tells her. He told her he didn't love her and that she should leave but when she dies he confesses his love for her. Shakespeare also helps you understand the character's personality by focusing on emotions that everyone can relate to. Through Hamlet's conversations with the ghost you are able to see his loyalty and respect for his family. Shakespeare shows jealousy in Claudius with his plan to kill King Hamlet and marry the Queen. He shows rage and revenge in

During my junior year in college, I traveled to Sub-Sahara Africa where I spent five months studying various aspects of the Swahili culture on the coast of Kenya. As an economics major, I was interested in obtaining a better understanding of the economic limitations of a third world country. The program focused on learning about Swahili life, language, and culture through firsthand experiences. By living with families and becoming intimately involved with everyday life, I became more aware of the social struggles and economic difficulties of the Muslim culture that populated the coastline.

The highlight of the program was the independent study, which allowed students to research a topic of choice for five weeks. I decided to travel to the island of Lamu, hoping to gain a better understanding of population growth trends and family planning efforts. I began by working at the local family planning center and talking to women in the community about their understanding of modern contraception. After a short period on the island, I came to the conclusion that there was a direct correlation between the amount of education received by a woman and her decision to use such methods. Then with the local female leaders, I helped to develop a program to educate the women about modern contraception. I consider my project to have been successful, because the number of women attending the family planning center grew slightly and, more importantly, because a program was established to increase the knowledge level of women in the community.

I feel that my awareness of Kenyan culture rose dramatically with my experience abroad. I possess a stronger appreciation for the difficulties that developing nations face, as well as an understanding of the economic limitations that prohibit third world countries from advancing. Specifically, my experience studying family planning and population control provided a perspective on the issues facing women in third world societies. I believe that lack of education is the single greatest factor limiting the advancements of third world nations.

The effectiveness of a public leader depends on many qualities vision, ability to communicate ideas and values, task commitment, full knowledge of the problems of the community, skills in taking advantage of the resources available to maximize success, among others. However, the final outcome of his work, that should be the improvement of the community living standards, i.e. the greater good, will only be achieved by a person that has high moral and ethical values and who lives and works following this core principles.

This can be seen best by observing the terrible situation caused by corruption in government in many nations. For example, the countries in Latin America suffer from a long established corruption in public institutions and in the government. Theft, bribery and nepotism among other felonies abound , impoverishing this nations and leading them to economic and political crisis. And this happens not only in the lower levels of the organizations, but even with Presidents, undermining the common people's faith in their political leaders.

Through the voice of a Dutch observer, the African slave market is described in high esteem. The Dutchman depicts the slave ships as providing a higher quality of life from what the slaves knew prior to their imprisonment. However, this man's portrayal of the slave trade is far from the truth.

Although the slave market in North America is most commonly remembered of all slave markets, traffic in slaves had existed for centuries before the arrival of the first European fleets along the African shore. The slaves used throughout Africa were mainly prisoners captured in battles with neighboring rivals. Slavery also existed in European countries before making its presence in the New World. But, with the discovery of the New World in the 140s came the subsequent planting of sugarcane in South America and the Caribbean Islands. The new plantations required more workers than could be provided by the small and inexperienced American Indian population in the New World. The European colonists were desperate for more laborers to toil in the brutal conditions of their sugarcane plantations.

As a solution to this problem, African slaves were shipped from the coasts and inland areas of Africa to labor in the New World. The new African slaves were somewhat less susceptible to European diseases than the American Indian population. This made the African slaves a much more desirable purchase. Altogether, between the early sixteenth century and the late nineteenth century, as many as ten million African slaves were transported to the Americas.

The Europeans were not the only people in support of the African slave trade. African intermediaries, such as private merchants, local elites, or trading state monopolies, were very active in the slave trade. Local monarchs in African states viewed the slave trade as a source of income. These elite Africans fully supported the slave trade because it boosted their own esteem. They were often paid in various types of imported goods, which included East Asian textiles, furniture, and other manufactured products. Although many of the actual slaves, and families of the slaves, were in much disagreement of the slave trade, they did not have the power to stop the process.

Custom Essays on A Slave Market in Africa

The slave trade, although it seemed very profitable at first to African elitists, had many dislocating effects. The importation of inexpensive manufactured goods from European countries diluted the establishment of local cottage industry and impoverished incalculable families. Political instability and civil strife intensified in Africa in response to the demand for slaves and the introduction of firearms. Although the coast of West Africa felt the greatest impact, almost all states who fell to the temptations of economic profit also contributed to the increase in conflict within their own state and amongst neighboring states. Please note that this sample paper on A Slave Market in Africa is for your review only. All the President's Men, by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, is the actual story of how Bernstein and his colleague Woodward broke the dramatic mystery that brought the downfall of President Richard M. Nixon. The Watergate scandal is one of the most unsettling political detective stories of the century. These journalists were able to put the scandalous pieces of the puzzle together and produce the series of stories that earned the Washington Post a Pulitzer Prize.

This book accurately portrays these two newspaper reporters working to expose criminal activities by a president, his advisors, and his political party. It displays the inner workings of a major newspaper, the Washington Post, and describes how many governmental institutions work. The book portrays a pivotal event in U.S. history and brings home the fact that Richard Nixon and his co-conspirators attempted nothing less than deliberate subversion of the U.S. Constitution and the democratic process.

This book also shows how everyone in the U.S. trusted and supported their elected officials and very rarely doubted them. It portrays how political figures can get away with sabotaging a national election and get away with it without having criminal charges filed against them. The novel portrays how politicians can get away with lying to the American people and how the American political culture is willing to do anything to win. It also depicts dedication to the president by the willingness of political figures to do anything to protect his reputation; even going as far as to take the blame for a crime they had nothing to do with. Woodward and Bernstein accurately portray American culture at the height of the Watergate scandal.

I have learned about the Watergate scandal through American history classes and information read, but this novel gave details I had never heard before. This book gave me a deeper understanding of the wide reaching political drama during the Nixon era.

Cheap University Papers on All the Presidents Men

Various illegal activities were conducted including burglary, wire tapping, violations of campaign financing laws, sabotage, and attempted use of government agencies to harm political opponents to help Richard Nixon win reelection in the 17 presidential elections. There were about 40 people charged with crimes related to the scandal. Most of them were convicted by juries or pleaded guilty. Watergate involved more high level government officials than any previous scandal.

When Woodward and Bernstein made a large implication, such as that of H.R. Haldemans involvement in the misuse of reelection funds, they employed as many as four or five sources. To make sure that they were not overly ambitious or biased, they frequently ran their story ideas, topics, and facts, by their editors, Sussman and Rosenfeld. This story was a potential boon to their career or a disaster in the making. They had to be certain. Bernstein and Woodward are acknowledged as being the ones to uncover Nixons dirty tricks.

Woodward and Bernstein emerged from the Watergate scandal as American heroes. To say they brought down the Nixon administration may be overdoing it; but they certainly tore the cover off a malodorous snake pit and brought it kicking and screaming into daylight.

The events that lead to the Revolutionary War clearly exhibit the evolution of the colonist's ideals regarding their rights and liberties. The English colonists had long held the utmost loyalty to the British crown, never distinguishing themselves from their British counterparts back in England; however, the colonists had gradually begun to embrace a new ideology in regard to their rights in liberties. By 1765, when Daniel Dulany wrote his attack on virtual representation, the English colonists were identified as "British-Americans" This simple reference indicates that the colonists were no longer content being just Englishmen, nor with English law and especially taxation being imposed upon them without some form of colonial consent or representation. The evolving ideals of the colonists were perhaps best summarized with Dulany's statement, "The relationship between the British-Americans and the English electors is a knot too infirm to be relied on as a competent security" (Beasley80). From the various documents declaring distinct rights and rebuking British mandates that emerged during this critical time, a definitive pathway of change can be traced that lead to a higher appreciation for rights and liberties as well as more individualistic ideals than were previously exhibited by the colonists.

By the 1760's disputes with England were increasing and Great Britain struggled to organize the colonies and lay rest to conflicts with the colonists, in "The Proclamation of 176" King George III tried to make good on his promise of no western expansion while attempting to keep in perspective the best interest of the English colonists. However, the proclamation was sorely misinterpreted, as the colonist viewed it a denial of their right to expand their personal land holdings. While this was perhaps a valiant effort on behalf of the throne to organize and to please the colonist, it would only help to more firmly plant the seeds of independence. Even as tensions between Britain and the colonies were at an all time high, many colonists were still very much loyal to the crown and had no direct intention of a complete succession from England. This lingering sense of loyalty was most evident in "The Olive Branch Petition", which was sent to King George III in 1775, only one year prior to the Declaration of Independence. This document expressed a deep desire amongst the colonists to reconcile with the throne and end the ongoing conflict. In the petition, the colonists referred to themselves as "your majesty's faithful subjects", which clearly exhibits their lack of desire to entirely severe ties with Great Britain. The petition would be the colonist's final plea for reconciliation, given that King George refused the document and declared the colonies in rebellion, which in turn brought the conflict between England and the colonies to a climax that resulted in the rise of an extraordinary nation.Order Custom American Revolution paper

'Music' is a word with several meanings, to some it is simply entertainment, a pleasure they enjoy indulging in when they are bored of going out. For others it is an escape, a sanctuary away from the world, society, and the chaos that surrounds their hectic, everyday lives. Music plays a very important role in the very fabric of our lives; often used to reflect how someone feels towards an individual or an object or to evoke suppressed emotions. A good friend of mine has written a dark, depressing song about how text messaging has taken away much from our interpersonal conversations. In general, music is a form of expression for ones feelings and emotions, whether stated straight out or expressed through metaphors, double-meanings and hidden messages.

Music can be used for many different reasons, and for many different occasions. Music at an Art Gallery is used to help the artist express his emotions and feelings derived from his work. Music at an elegant restaurant might be soft and calming, used to create a relaxed environment for an individual to enjoy their meal; music at a Mexican restaurant or at a kids restaurant is often lively and upbeat. At a party music is used to entertain, to make the occasion more enjoyable and to get the party-goers moving. A party can be called 'fun' based on the social group, yet in most cases the social group would not stick around if the music does not appeal to them.

People have a variety of personality types, which can be reflected by the types of music they listen too. Some people enjoy a good rhythmic sound that they can dance to; they appreciate music like R&B or Hip-hop. Other people enjoy just sitting and listening as the music weaves its melodious spell, whether the fairy-like strains of Enya or the rolling notes of Strauss. Others, such as myself, prefer intense music that is based on the use of drums and electric instruments. Still others would take a classic trance, rave or techno mix over anything else anyone could put together. Even different regions of the world favor different types of music - Eastern music is a thinner sound without a lot of blending of chords, while the West listens to music with a thicker sound and a greater blend of tones.

Although the understanding and interpretation of music varies among different age groups, many times the music is designed to attract one certain age over another. To the younger crowds, music such as heavy metal, Pop, R&B, or Rap containing loud, up-to-date, and exciting sound effects often seem more appealing. Adults, in many instances, appreciate the more calm and soft approach towards music, expressed in the 'classics' even if everyone has a different view of what the classics are.

Interpretations of music vary among those understanding the nuances of the soul of music. Music can be used to set a mood in an environment in relationship to the setting in which it is played; such as in the different restaurants, or the scenes of a movie, play, or show, and so on. Music is an audio art. There may not be any colors on a canvas, yet music can still be used to create masterpieces that transcend visual art. Music evokes emotions and can give feelings power in a new dimension. All from the great equalizer, that which man across the world has in common - music.

Robin Goodfellow, also known as Puck or Hobgoblin, is a merry sprite, represented as "a very Shetlander among the gossamer-winged, dainty-limbed fairies, strong enough to knock all their heads together, a rough, knurly-limbed, fawn-faced, shock-pated, mischievous little urchin". Since Puck has no human feelings, he has no precise human meaning. He is strategic in A Midsummer Night's Dream as he is seen not only as a spectator of the plays happenings, but as a commentator and interpreter of the plays actions.

Puck brings about the confusion of the young Athenians as he tries to carry out Oberon's wishes; the king has taken pity on Helena and hopes to turn Demetrius scorn for her into love. Puck simply enchants the first male he sees, not realizing that it is the wrong person. Here is introduced the fact that just because he is a supernatural being he can't make a mistake. In fact, he makes several. With great amusement, however, he watches the confusion he has made and comments "Lord, what fools these mortals be!"

Puck is an ambivalent figure, a mischief-maker at best, and something weirder also, though the play confines him to harmlessness, and indeed bring benignity out of his antics. He is definitely seen more as a prankster than a wicked sprite. The word puck or pook originally meant a demon out for mischief or a wicked man, and Robin Goodfellow was once a popular name for the Devil. Puck, however, is neither wicked nor the Devil, and can be seen as benevolent.

Although the world of the fairies exhibits several characteristics common to popular belief and folklore tradition, it is to a considerable extent a new creation of Shakespeare's own. This is particularly true when we think of Puck, whose descent from Robin Goodfellow or Hobgoblin only accounts for one aspect of his being. If one examines the numerous statements that Puck utters about himself and that the others utter about him, one immediately realizes that Shakespeare has created a complex dramatic fugure to whom is assigned a key position within the fabric of the play. He is assigned the role of spectator several times, and as such he comments on the action.

Clearly Robin Goodfellow evolved in fairy lore as a supernatural explanation for the many trivial mishaps and accidents so commonplace in domestic living. He is the most purely entertaining of the fairy band. The error on Puck's part that we see in the beginning bears a deep significance for it shows that the fairies do err and that the influences they exert as supernatural agents in the play do not in the least answer to anything providential, but rather contain filaments of arbitrariness, self-depreciation, and folly. Yet his interventions in the development are as much the result of a casual mood or mischievous him as they are the result of premeditated instructions from his master, Oberon. Please note that this sample paper on Puck: The Harmless Devil is for your review only. JPS IMPROVEMENT OBJECTIVES

Order Custom Improvement Objectives paper

The following information is a compilation of improvement objectives to fix the major problems for JPS. The objectives defined below will be incorporated into the eventual design of the to-be system for JPS. Remember this information is confidential and for your eyes-only. This is very sensitive material and cannot be viewed by any JPS employee or any Umbrella Corp. employee not involved in the JPS analysis.

I. In order to assist JPS' cash flow problem we would like to implement a Management Information System (MIS) geared towards Fred. This MIS would provide periodic reports about topics such as operation efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity. We hope this system will help Fred monitor, plan, and control the management processes at JPS to make better decisions. This way JPS won't be forced into a tight crunch with cash flows. Reports generated might consist of routine, scheduled reports, ad hoc reports, or exception reports.

II. Our objective is to create a database with all inventory computers and then apply the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) model to this database system. With this model management will be able to determine the level of inventory acceptable and then the information system will be able to track inventory and when it falls below the reorder point, the inventory software will automatically generate a purchase order. In order to accomplish we plan on implementing a Materials Requirement Planning (MRP) software system. This will be an integrated system and will link functional departments like the office operations, the preservation lab, distribution/inventory, and promotion/corporate accounts at JPS. The new MRP II system will allow JPS to establish a just-in-time system that works with the reorder point to deliver products exactly when needed.

III. Using suggestions from Martha and Clifford we plan on creating an online order form for customers or corporations to quickly and easily order from the website and eliminate email requests. This should eliminate the down-time that the email would create while waiting for someone to receive the order. With this new online form the customer's request will proceed directly into the MRP system and automatically be placed in the system for processing.

IV. Another objective we have on the Umbrella Corp. JPS team is to work hand in hand with D.B. Wiederholt, Martha, and Willis to create a standardized pricing base for estimation to help the process of order taking and efficiency at JPS. This will hopefully eliminate any confusion customers have on how much orders will cost each time and clear up confusion with Mr. Wiederholt's "gut feeling" system of estimation. Regulating these prices should make for a faster compilation of a customer's estimates and a way to be positive that JPS is making money with each order. Please note that this sample paper on Improvement Objectives is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Question 1 Use the criteria outlined in the Lawler "Expectancy Theory Model" to evaluate the design of Nordstrom's compensation system. How well does Nordstrom's compensation system fit the Expectancy Theory Model?

Jim is looking for a candidate who not only has the skills and capabilities to build a 50-person, $0 million business in -4 years, but also has the personality to work well with the existing leadership team at Bitstream. In addition, he is looking for someone who has experience working with networking products as well as with Value Added Reseller (VAR) and other indirect sales channels.

Formal education is not as important for this requirement as is experience. However, a bachelor's degree has been added as a minimum requirement per the industry norm. While it is possible for a candidate to be successful without a college degree (e.g. Bill Gates and Richard Branson), statistically a college degree is generally correlated with better performance.

Jim is also looking for a candidate with diverse experience who can quickly start to develop the new business. As Jim says, "The job requires someone who is a seasoned professional…we neither have the time nor the experience in-house to teach someone how to run this business ."

A complete list of requirements was compiled, based on the needs Jim expressed, in order to create a job profile for the position. This profile (see Appendix A) highlights the various knowledge, skills and abilities that are necessary for the position.

Question Based on this analysis, would you recommend that the compensation system at Nordstrom be changed? If so why and how would you do this and still maintain superior customer satisfaction and high sales?

Two key components of a candidate's qualification are background and personal factors . The background factors consist of education and experience, two factors that can be determined by reviewing a candidate's resume. It is important however, to validate the contents of the resume by contacting references and by interviewing the candidate.

Personal factors include, intellectual ability, personality, and motivation . As Jim has mentioned that skills alone are not sufficient for this position, the personal factors take on added importance in the selection process. Bitstream desires a quick learner who is not only results oriented, but also a team player. These particular characteristics cannot easily be determined via the resume, and need to be explored through effective interviewing (see question 4).

The requirements for the candidate have been cross-referenced with the background and personal factors to create a scoring matrix (see Appendix B). Each factor has then been given a scoring range (between 1 and ) with an explanation as to the meaning of each score. The score entered by the interviewer is multiplied by a weight, reflecting the importance of that factor or sub-factor, resulting in a total weighted score.

The purpose of this matrix is to attempt to formalize the interview process as well as to try to remove bias that may occur through 'gut-feel' decision-making.

Question Should Nordstrom change any of their other human capital management practices? If yes, how?

ROTHMC Essay

Over many years racism has been a disgusting, horrible issue in our world. Racism still exists today, although it is not as bad as it once was. In the historical novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, Mildred D. Taylor explores the issue of racism through the victimization of the Berry Family and Sam Tatum by the Ku Klux Klan as well as an encounter with more disgusting people at the Wallace store.

The Berry's burning is a huge act for racism. First Mr. Berry was talking to a Caucasian lady. Then some man saw him talking to her. They didn't think it was normal for an African-American man to be talking to and Caucasian lady. After Mr. Berry was done talking to her, he left for home in his car. But what Mr. Berry didn't notice was that the Caucasian men were following him to his home. Mr. Berry didn't have much gas left so he stopped at his friends' house. As he was leaving his car to go to the house, The KKK jumped him and poured hot tar on him and feathered him. The KKK thought that you could only talk to your own race. Cassie also had some experiences of racism in Strawberry.

Cassies experiences in Strawberry were very rough. First Cassie, Stacy, and T.J. went into Jim Lee Barnett mercantile buy some supplies for T.J.'s family. Mr. Barnett was helping the kids when a Caucasian lady came in. Mr. Barnett dropped all the things that he was helping with the kids and helped the lady, although the kids were first. So Cassie gets very upset and complains to Mr. Barnett. Then Mr. Barnett throws Cassie out of the store. That was the fist sign of racism Cassie experienced in Strawberry. The next experience was on the street of Strawberry. Cassie was minding her own business, when bratty Lillian Jean bumped in to Cassie. Well Lillian jean blamed the accident on Cassie although she did not do it. Lillian Jean made Cassie apologize, but Cassie did not. So Lillian Jean made her dad tell her to apologize just because Cassie. Whit this racism, the KKK is a big part of racism, so is the Wallace store.

Buy custom Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry term paper

The Wallace store is not a good place for kids to go and hang out. Papa doesn't want the kids to go to the Wallace store because the Wallace's are members of the KKK and the kids there are drinking. The KKK might harm the kids or even kill them because they are African-American. So that is why Papa doesn't want the kids to go there. This is another act of repeating racism. Killing or harming African-American kids just because the kids go to a Caucasian store.

By reading Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, Mildred D. Taylor wanted us to realize racism is unacceptable, evil, inappropriate and not necessary. Our job is to stamp out racism by treating every human being equally. It is important to join together to create a nation that celebrates our differences.

A Family Must Remain United

In the 1950's the Younger Family, a typical black family, lived in

the city of Chicago. Throughout the struggles and adversity they were

one of the few families who managed to stay together. Although there

were some arguments amongst their family they were still open to realize

that "Families Must Remain United" (Brantingham 467,470). It is through

unity the Younger family withstood the problems and struggles that

occurred throughout the play. Someone once told me that " Struggles

build Character" (Kyles, Ortensia) and the Younger family certainly had

character.

One of the profound ordeals the Younger family endured was

money. Everyone in the family had ideas on how the money should be

spent. Two family members in particular, Walter Lee Younger and his

sister, Beneatha Younger. Walter Lee wanted to open a liquor store, and

Beneatha wanted to become a doctor. They both showed ambition and

perseverance, but did not let their differences come between their loyalty

to their family.

" The internal difficulties of the family and the detrimental effects

of these problems on the family is a major theme in the play" (Decker,

major point to what brings the Younger family closer together. This

family has lived through most of life's big adjustments, should their be

more, by looking at how this family has handled it in the past it should

not even be a challenge. To determine what is a problem the Younger family must have

expectations and morals to uphold and in knowing these expectations is

what brought the Younger family out and into the life that they are

currently living. Leaving themselves defined by this quote "Family goals,

allowing them the freedom to live the American dream. Therefore leaving

with a quote my own that I believe will hold the family together this long,

"It is better to have lived it, than to have went around it, for if it comes

your way again, you will know how to handle it" This quote alone shows

the strength and dignity portrayed by the Younger Family, leading them

to a fulfilling life. The Younger family is by far the most strongest and

most powerful families " For Where a his family stands there is He"

Sophists believed in the men being the leaders. The men were put first before women. The men needed to be fully educated, mostly men anyway. They had a social contract that was just like the constitution. To vote or get most things approved the government or whoever has to get the consent of the people because they all work together.

Plato wrote a book called "The Republican". His teacher was Socerties and they didn't agree with having faith in man. Everybody says man is the top of the food chain but Plato came up with a three level society that tells who is ranked from top to bottom. The top are the philosophers, because they've lived longer so they've studied and they have the best idea of what everything means. In the middle is the military and the bottom are the workers/common people. Plato also believes there's no such thing as a perfect justice system because nobody's perfect and also that there's a definite definition for everything.

Stoicism was around at the Hellenistic period, which was after Alexander with the mixing of cultures. Stoicism is having no emotion and no religion. Stoics liked the thinking of Hebrews there's an absolute right and wrong but the Stoics want that not including religions, which they called natural law. They also want everybody to accept responsibility for their actions but also with no religion. So basically a society with great morals but with no religion included.

General Ideas included that nobody can really know truth because of all the possibilities and variations out there. It includes that not one person is perfect that everybody's imperfect because we're only human. Free speech is essential for life to learn new stuff and it'll get spread around so society will hear all the opinions and people will learn things. In the 1600's Greek thought dominated western thought.

The Greeks believed there were no things unnatural. They didn't believe in man-made things that were not real but then given real-like characteristics. The Greeks were the ones who believed in animistic things and man-made things.

There was a guy named Xenophanes who believed there was no such thing as certain truth. He thought there was no way to figure out the certain, real truth, about anything. He believed that "man created God in his own image" as oppose to what the Greeks believed. The Hebrews said "God created man in His own image".

Using our four senses is how we understand and comprehend things. We have experiences and we use our four senses to comprehend what it meant and what happened, and to eventually come up with a truth about whatever subject it has to do with. But

According to Rosen, the author of Everything You Need to Know about Drug Abuse, the number one drug of choice in the United States is Alcohol. Alcohol is the most abused drug in the United States. Although illegal to drink if under the age of twenty-one, one out of every five teens has a drinking problem. This means that about million teens have trouble with alcohol. There are many types of drinks which have alcohol in them. They are divided into beer, wine, and liquor. Although they are divided into categories they still have the same potent ingredient in them, Ethel Alcohol. Ethel Alcohol when put into the body causes the brain to send mixed messages to the body. These mixed messages could make you angry or happy. These messages also could slur your speech, or make you stager when you walk. Alcohol not only effect the visible aspects of the body it also effect parts of the body that are unseen. It makes the blood vessels expand causing more blood to flow through the veins. This causes the body to loose heat and may cause one to freeze to death. The liver is also greatly affected by alcohol. The liver is an organ that is responsible for filtering the alcohol out of the blood and riding the body of it. The alcohol makes the liver work harder than normal this causes the liver cells to turn fatty and harden. Drinking for a long time can cause cirrhosis of the liver and could kill.

Tobacco is another American drug of choice. Tobacco is very addictive. Tobacco contains several agents that are dangerous. Nicotine is the most dangerous of them all. It stimulates the nerves in the spinal cord slowing reactors; it also affects the heart and lungs. The use of tobacco products over a period of time can cause physiological dependence this making it very difficult to stop using the product. Goals for a Lifetime

As a University of Phoenix student I hope to achieve a balance between family, career and an education. I look forward to meeting academic challenges head on. By becoming a student again I hope to grow as a person, a father and a husband. Attending school I believe will help to forge new lifestyle changes for the better. It will also help in creating lifelong goals and strategies to complete them. There are many personal and academic goals I would like to reach as a student; both helping my progression in life. Here are just a few of the reasons Im returning to school I hope to become a more efficient learner, also receive an education to better provide for my family, and improve my time management.

By being a more efficient learner I hope to stimulate myself into becoming a lifelong learner. It is very important to me to become an effective learner because of all the changes our society is making. Enhancing the level in which I absorb and apply information will hopefully allow me to succeed. By succeeding at this I will become more self-confident in today's work environments. As it is now, in my career if you're not self-confident, you are not taken seriously. Relearning to learn is a challenge well accepted by me to further my goals in life.

By returning to school I hope to broaden my chances of making a career change for the positive. I believe to make a career change I must obtain an education. Obtaining an education enables you to market yourself in a better forum of prospects. Attaining a new career will allow me to ultimately provide for my family in a more attractive way. Thus, in better providing for my family, I can spend more time watching my kids grow up and being a more attentive husband. In my present career I have to work sixty hours a week to monetarily support my family. So finding the time for family is very limited.

Finding time for family is not my only quandary as I have now added school to my agenda. Juggling work, school and family is an overwhelming thought. Learning how to manage my time more efficiently is a goal I have in returning to school. I must say organization is not one of my strongest attributes. By retraining my brain in the learning process I hope I will become more organized. In doing so it will help me in the pursuit of better time management.

In summary, by returning to school I hope to achieve structure and balance to an otherwise crazy lifestyle. Having to relearn to learn may seem overwhelming but in the end it will be worth it to me and my family. A change in my career means more time to spend on school and with my family, which is my highest priority. So being able to manage time wisely becomes a more crucial task than ever. All of these goals should set myself for success in the world around me. Returning to school for me can only make learning, providing for my family and managing time easier.

A Good Friend

Most people have a lot of friendships through their life. However, it is true to think that a friend relationship is more important than a family relationship sometimes. There is a proverb that says, "A friend in need is a friend indeed." I have a lot of friends since I came to the United States, but I believe that Nancy is not only my aunt but also the best friend in my life.

She is ten years older than I am and she is very nice and friendly. During the first few months I lived in the United States, I found that it was very difficult for me to adjust the life in a new culture. As a close friend, she spent several hours to explain to me how to familiarize with the new life in here. Moreover, she showed me how to drive and how to learn to pass the DMV test. After I lived here for a year, I had been accepted to the college. Because I did not understand enough English, I had problems with American students and people in school. It was a hard time for me to do a lot of paperwork including financial aid forms, placement test, course registration, and various questionnaires. However, my aunt was always willing to help me to do those things quickly. Although she was very busy with a full-time job in her company, she gave me all of her spare time and treat me fairly as a good friend.

After a few years I lived with her, I had noticed that she was always spending everything generously for me without expecting anything return to her. She was a considerate and lovely person. Sometimes, I had some problems with studies, monies or I' d made some mistakes in my life. Then she was the first person, who stayed right by my side to listen to all my troubles, to correct my mistakes, and to help me go through those problems completely. For me, this was the most important character value of a good friend. If I am lost and have nobody to guide me, I think I will be lost forever.

Because she was very kind and courtesy, she took me go to see the movies every weekend. Therefore, I could improve my understanding of English and have a chance to discuss with her about things such as weather, clothes, school, etc. Especially before each class exam or final test, she would assist me and give me the best solution if I did not understand some points.

As the years went by, I overcame most of my difficulties with a new life in the United States and I became more independent person. I was learning the cultures and areas of the city well enough by sharing my feelings and traveling around with her every weekend.

Generally, good thoughts, good words and good actions are important elements to interact with friend relationship. Sometimes I hear someone says, "You can't pick your relatives, but you can pick your friends." I believe that there are many ways, what people can tell who really a good friend is, but my definition of a great friend is a realistic person, who communicates honestly, compromises, and brings out the best in someone's to achieve the most important goals.

Motivation is the condition of providing something as need, belief, or desire that induces a character to act. In the historical fiction Night, by Elie Wiesel, action and setting contribute significantly to the motivation of the central protagonist, Elie. The overall effect of motivation presents the characters as retrogressing to savage-like behaviors. Motivation undoubtedly portrays a vital role in Elies demeanor.

Many times, actions of others influence the aspirations of the main character. One day in the story, the Kapo (head of prison block) Idek flies into his usual fanatical rage and beats Elie. A young Aryan French girl comforts him in German. Years later, Elie meets the woman in Paris. She reveals that she is Jewish and risked her life, trusting Elie by speaking to him in German. The girls words motivated and encouraged Elie to be determined and not give up. Elie, though physically beaten, is emotionally boosted by this. Another time, prisoners are so crowded into barracks that people are piled upon each other. Elie finds himself lying on top of Juliek, a Polish violinist he knew in Buna. Julieks soulful playing of Beethoven through the night elevates hope and soothes the audience of exhausted and dying men. Evidently, these actions display the causes to motivation of Elie.

Setting also affects the inclination of the central figure. At Auschwitz conditions are better and the fellow captives are not as brutal. The prisoners are even allowed to sleep in beds. Because of the more humane treatment, Elie and the residents of Auschwitz are more spirited. But at his stay in Birkenau, Elie is separated from his mother and sister, sees babies horrifically tossed into fires, comes close to death in the crematories, and is pummeled by guards. Dwelling in Birkenau, Elie loses hope and motivation but regains some of it at Auschwitz. On the last march to Gleiwitz, Elies father becomes weak, and catches a deadly case of dysentry. So while in Gleiwitz, Elie, is demoralized. Gleiwitz influences the motivation by reducing it. Either by diminishing or heightening motivation, the setting is important in determining the amount of it.

The total outcome of motivation leads Elie and furthermore the other characters to de-humanize, desiring only for food and water. Elie comes to not even caring for his father. The harshness of camp life weakens Elies filial devotion, which causes him to feel shame and guilt. He becomes concerned primarily with feeding himself, an animal-like behavior, and this instinct of self-preservation often outweighs concern for his fater. Later while the captives are transporting to Buchenwald, German workmen throw pieces of bread into one of the prison cars for entertainment. The prisoners becoume barbaric, trying for the scarce amount of nourishment. One man desperately hungry, kills his own father for a piece of bread. The prisoners are transformed into a pack of savage wolves, fighting each other for survival. The motivation to satisfy their hungers reduces them to acting like mere beasts.

Notably, setting and action contributes greatly to the motivation of the central character, Elie. The motivation causes Elie to desire more for food, and succumb human traits as revenge and generosity to animal-like behaviors. The horror of the holocaust that allowed people like Elie to be persecuted, should never be permitted to transpire again.
