Hrothgars Speech

Hrothgars speech to Beowulf seems to be a warning from his own experience. Knowing that Beowulf has just killed Gendel and will be praised as a great warrior, Hrothgar wants Beowulf to be aware of the dangers of success, like Beowulf, he too has experienced success and in his speech tries to warn Beowulf not to become arrogant and forget that it is God who gives wisdom and land and high estate to people on earth. Hrothgar s speech presents the idea that mans own ignorance leads to his own downfall.

Custom writing service can write essays on Hrothgar's Speech

At the beginning of the passage, Hrothgar wants Beowulf to realize that a man only achieves wisdom and power through the miracle of the Lords generosity. Hrothgar warns Beowulf not to become wrapped up in success, loosing sight of God and the fact that all things are in his power. He wants Beowulf to always stay humble and to realize that regardless of how great his success, it is only great because God allows it. Hrothgar knows that if a man becomes ignorant in his own success then he is preparing his own end.

Hrothgar warns that if a man becomes arrogant and believes that all the world bends to his will then he allows the seed of arrogance to grow within him without realizing, without wakening the souls guardian. Hrothgar warns that when this happens, when a man is enmeshed in matters of this world, the evil archer, or devil, will secretly fill his mind with temptations. Hrothgar is telling Beowulf that if a man forgets that success is given to him by God, he unknowingly allows the devil to enter and poison his mind. The devils temptations will soon make things that he loves seem insufficient. A man with a poisoned mind will begin to hoard his treasure and loose sight of his destiny and disregard the honors given him of God. Then soon the man will die as fate decrees and his throne will be replaced.

Hrothgar ends his speech by asking Beowulf to be aware of such diseased thinking and to always swallow pride. He reminds Beowulf that although he is now in his prime, in battle or in bed eventually he will die. With these words Hrothgar warns Beowulf not to become obsessed with suspicions, but to give with great generosity because regardless of how we live, we will all succumb to death.

In Hrothgars speech to Beowulf, he reminds us that God is who allows man to obtain success. The passage warns us that when things are good it is easy to forget about God, and to become enmeshed in matters of the world. Hrothgar reminds us that we will all die and worldly things will no longer matter. He suggests that we should always be humble, and to remember that all things are under Gods power.

Haste me to knowt, that I with wings as swift

As meditation or the thoughts of love

May sweep to to my revenge.

This is Hamlets immediate statement of revenge upon learning from the Ghost that his fathers death was the result of murder. Hamlets immediate reaction to the demands of revenge is that he will act upon it with the proverbial speed of thought. The irony is that Hamlet does not revenge with any speed. But it is worth noting that Hamlet uses the term meditation which to me seems antithetical to speed. Thoughts of love through the play are also scant. Hamlet rejects love. So, the initial impression is one of celerity, its Hamlets use of words that hint otherewise.

Your second quote, here is the whole speech by Hamlet.

And therefore as a stranger give it welcome.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,

Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.(175)

But come,

Here, as before, never, so help you mercy,

How strange or odd someer I bear myself-

As I perchance hereafter shall think meet

To put an antic disposition on- (180)

That you, at such time seeing me, never shall,

With arms encumberd thus, or this headshake,

Or by pronouncing of some doubtful phrase,

As Well, we know, or We could, and if we would,

Or If we list to speak, or There be and if they might, (185)

Or such ambiguous giving out, to note

That you know aught of me - this do swear,

So grace and mercy at your most need help you.

To get a handle on this speech you really need to start back at the beginning of the sequence when Marcellus and Horatio rejoin Hamlet. Horatio notes Hamlets wild and whirling words. This can really make Hamlet hard to understand but that is the point. His exited state is portrayed through the fragmented nature of his dialogue. In literary terms this is known as anacoluthon. This is a grammatical interruption or lack of implied sequence within a sentence.

Hamlet is trying to extract an oath from his two companions. Horatio says Propose the oath,... (160)

Hamlet responds,

Never to speak of this that you have seen. (161)

He then moves to another spot and continues,

Never to speak of this that you have heard. (168)

Then within the above quote,

Here, as before,...(177)

That you,...never shall (181)

...note (186)

That you know aught of me-this do swear. (187)

In between Hamlet is interjecting explanatory specifics of how he may look or how he may sound. This is also where Hamlet offers his antic disposition often taken as an ackowledgement that Hamlets coming madness is an act. Dover Wilson in his book, What Happens In Hamlet, argues that Hamlet does have moments of madness and that his statement is made to give the others the impression that it is feigned when it is in fact real. Of course this is Wilsons interpretation. Willaim Shakespeares Hamlet

Critical Thinking Challenges

The importance of critical thinking has been reiterated in recent documents delineating standards and new goals for social studies education. Yet, according to author "teaching critical thinking is problematic because there are competing definitions, practices, and many barriers to its implementation." (Wright, 00).

The author's negative perception in regards to the current techniques employ in teaching critical thinking leads him to believe that new standards and goals will be very difficult to meet. "This assumption is a an unstated belief about how the world was, is, or will become." (Pearson, 00). The author's emotions progress rapidly towards forming his own rational decisions without putting a more structural picture into clearer focus. Furthermore, he fails to examine the precise meaning of the various components available before reacting to the ideas being presented.

Understanding the precise meaning of key words or phrases is an important prerequisite on deciding whether to agree or disagree with someone's opinion. Wright's inability to clearly define the worth of his argument with facts is obvious; consequently, the reader's evaluation process is much harder and ambiguous. He defines the new methods for teaching critical thinking in a positive form however each of these methods suggests a different way to measure standards that according to him are barriers for the implementation of new system.

Custom Essays on Critical Thinking Challenges

Effective writing strives for clarity. Thinking about the characteristics of intended audience helps to determine whether or not ambiguities need to be clarified. A specialized audience may adequately understand phrases or specific abstractions that could be very ambiguous to a general audience. Wright's use of ambiguity can be interpreted as a form of fallacy and logic distortion due to the heavy emotional impact intended.

The intended meaning of Wright's writing is not clearly communicated on this article due in most part to the lack of concrete illustrations to support meaning intended. The article cannot be evaluated until we know the communicator's intended meaning of key terms and phrases as well as alternative meanings they could conceivably have had in the context of the argument.

Civil Engineering came into existence in the1th century. It was started with the design and construction of roads and bridges. Most of these roads and bridges were built for military purposes so the name for the designers came to be "military engineer." Soon after, an interest in making better living conditions by constructing buildings, water, and sewage systems grew. Since these facilities dealt mainly with civilians the name "Civil Engineer" was now used to classify such engineers. Engineering students were mostly taught by way of apprenticeship under engineering professionals. They were said to be gaining practical experience along with the academics. In 185 the American Society of Civil Engineers was founded. There purpose was to make engineers known as the leaders in providing a better quality of life. The American Society of Civil Engineers is the oldest national engineering society.

The lineage and the dominant images impact me by making it better for me in the civil engineering field. It allows me to have pride in what I do because of the great accomplishment, whether big or small, of the past. The fact that civil engineers have always strived to make the quality of life better makes me want to continue in the steps of my predecessors. To me being a civil engineer means looking for a way to improve already constructed structures or designing better structures to improve the quality of living.

Due to popular demand (and the fact that a few students experienced a freeze-up on Centra-One in the middle of our recitation and missed out), I decided to post and e-mail a copy of the summary "map" I sketched as I watched the British CD and read the UK Articles for Week . In this sketch my aim to extract the main points out of a field of details presented across the CDs, articles and recitation discussions. I suggest you develop a summary map for each module. It is very useful when reviewing for essay type exams.

Now remember, the "map" I created below and reviewed in our recitation is only a sketch…it is never exact, or by any means complete. It is a learning tool that helps me synthesize my observations. I would like each of you to do your own as well…you find the course materials to be much clearer this way.

S stands for sport. The 00 Audi S4, equipped with a biturbo, 50 hours power engine with performance-boosting triple-intake manifold and sporty six-speed manual, delivers without hesitation. Two major factors contributed to a false sense of power the car gave me. These factors include control and the benefits the car came with.

Inside, sport seats hold you tight while an uncommonly broad torque band delivers power in any gear, giving a sense of control. While driving, I fully enjoy the exuberant S4 whether I am cruising city streets or challenging the open road. Others may settle for one turbocharger to boost performance, the S4 counters with two. One for each cylinder bank, making me feel proud. The S4s 50 hp, .7 litre V6 is just the beginning of its performance edge. With quattro all-wheel drive response steering, and a nimble suspension mark it as a car for all seasons, all reasons, managing time in case needed. Family, friends and co-workers trust me to get them to any destination. Trust comes not only from my ability to drive well, but in the car itself. In the event an airbag deploys, central locking is automatically released, interior lighting is switched on, fuel pump and engine switched off, and the hazard flashers are put to work. Finally, a feeling of importance is present when owning a lavish car. Acquiring such a car does not come easy; it was earned through difficult labor. To have a feeling of control is driving down a road and knowing that if something is desired from the car it is to deliver without any hesitation.

To maintain a car costs hundreds of dollars each month, but most of what is being paid for is its benefits. Convenience is one of the benefits. It is more expedient to get in a car and drive down to the mall rather then waiting for a bus to drive you. Flexibility is important to a successful day; with the greatest results. Means of where to go and when to go adds suppleness. Also, privacy is one the factors to own a car. When on the road, the S4 provides a state-of-the-art 150-watt eight speaker sound system at volume I prefer. Privacy ties to independence which can be used in many ways. When driving alone with no certain destination I feel independent, it is then my decision where to go or what to do. To achieve anything that is possible with my car gives me power. Power is conceived in decision making and that is the finest benefit of all. A car has many benefits that we sometimes never notice, but with a brief thought you might perceive how much a car can furnish us.

Until recent notion I had never thought control and the benefits of a car, could give me a false sense of power. The use of this false power can be viewed as benefactor or malevolence. Still many people are not aware of the power a car conceals.

Tennyson uses a variety of techniques in his poem 'Mariana'. One of the main techniques, which he uses to give the reader a further insight and depth into the poem, is setting.

Tennyson starts the poem 'Mariana' off by using an epigraph "Mariana in the moated grange" which already makes you think off a lonely place as 'moated' symbolises something difficult to get to.

Tennyson tells us about the setting many times. The first stanza starts with 'the blackest moss' and 'were thickly crusted' this makes the reader think of something old, untidy and uncared for. There is also a sense lack of movement as Tennyson talks about the latch being 'unlifted'. The place feels very lonely and the word is even used in the stanza, it feels very remote, where there are not many visitors. Assonance 'dreary, aweary' is used in the stanza to make the poem seem very drawn out and slow.

A lot of depressing language is used which, adds emphasis to the lonely dark place where Mariana is. Phrases that are used are 'Thickest dark did trance the sky' which makes the reader think of a big black cover over the sky, almost smothering her. Another phrase which is also used is 'glooming flats' which symbolises monotonous lands around her so there I no one as far as she can see. Monotonous means never ending you could also say it means nothing is ever going to change this woman will always be very alone. Monotonous could be described as the structure of the poem as well, the poem doesn't go anywhere and the continuous repeat of the refrain helps shows this.

Write my Essay on Explore Tennnyson's use of setting in the poem 'Mariana'. for me

Tennyson uses the setting to also make the character appear very miserable; the only object she can see is a poplar tree. Phallic personification is used as a symbol to say there is a lack of a man in her life as the shadow is the only thing in her bed, to make the point that the woman who lives on the grange is very secluded.

Tennyson also uses repetition of words to add emphasis to the very remote place, Tennyson repeats the words 'gray', 'lonely', and 'old' which all symbolise no change, nothing at this place is new, nothing ever moves. When the refrain is repeated several times its almost as if she is tired of life, so once again the poem appears to be never ending.

Tennyson could use setting as a voice for himself, as if to say nothing in society changes poets are as outcast as women. Its appears Tennyson is frustrated at being cast out of society. Tennyson living so far away in Lincolnshire can only make the problem much worse. There are no other humans nearby therefore there can be no change, its as almost as if the landscape is synaesthetic.

Capital punishment is a process that goes on in our world even today. However, even with its practice, there are many debates going on questioning the continuation of capital punishment in our judicial punishment.

There are many problems with capital punishment that has compelled people to be against it. First, of all many argue that the process is not fair in many aspects. Many culprits, put on the death roll, are normally given lousy representation and therefore are not allowed to undergo fair trials. This has raised questions concerning the innocence of some people who have already been sentenced to death.

Many people have also presented the argument that many people who commit murder are in conditions that shouldn't permit them to be on the death roll. Many of them have psychological problems that should be looked at by experts and a solution to their problems should be found. Many culprits also have sordid pasts that have affected them and through treatment could probably come back as viable citizens of our individual states.

Also there are gender issues concerning this practice. It is believed that if both a male and female commit crimes worth the death sentence, it is highly unlikely that the women would get it. The male on the other hand would have a pretty strong chance of getting the sentence without any questions. Many people are against this unfair practice and believe that it could only be made fair if the practice is abolished all together.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Capital Punishment

There are also questions of revenge. The judicial system is supposed to reform people and to punish people for crimes not to admit revenge in the hearts of the family of victims. The death roll plays this role in making people feel like the culprits have been paid back for what they did to them or their family member.

There are also moral questions that are also asked. Many people ask that if people are punished for murder, then aren't the people who give the sentences also causing murder? There are also questions about whose responsibility it is concerning the above questioning, the one who sentenced the culprit or the one who carry's out the execution.

Many people also wonder if people should be allowed to witness these executions. If so then they ask why it isn't then televised for everyone to see the execution. This is actually a case in many nations whereby executions are made a pubic spectacle.

Whatever the case, I believe that capital punishment should be abolished. I think that there are too many questions being asked and too many complications arising from this process. With all these we can never be sure if the process is clean or not.

Please note that this sample paper on Capital Punishment is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Ancestry and Lineage

During the Anglo-Saxon period in history, there were many great kings and rulers. In a world which every male was know as his father's son, ancestral heritage played a major role in who became the distinguished leaders of their time. The folk epic Beowulf illustrates the importance of one's lineage and background through the words and actions of three specific characters. The watchman, Wealtheow, and Beowulf himself show the significance ancestry and the value of order of succession within noble families.

Seeing Beowulf and his men coming ashore, the watchman , guard of the Danish coast, questions Beowulf of his business. Beowulf informs the watchman his reason for being there is to assist Hrothgar in the slaying of Grendel. He also explains he is the son of Ectheow, a famous and dignified noble. "…My father was famed far and wide, a noble lord, Ectheow by name-…" (15). The watchman, noticing in Beowulf's appearance that he is a noble warrior as well, directs Beowulf and the rest of the Geats towards Hrothgar. The watchman's decision to allow the army of the Geats into the Danish land was most likely influenced by the knowledge of Beowulf's father. Beowulf's ancestry became a critical part in permitting him to see Hrothgar and eventually defeating Grendel.

Wealtheow, being a good mother, values the importance of family and is always looking out for the best interest of her sons. After Beowulf successfully kills Grendel, Hrothgar, in his happiness, offers him the position of king once he passes away. Wealtheow steps in stating that that position should rightly go to Hrothgar's nephew, Hrothulf, until their sons come of age. She tells Hrothgar to be generous with praise and gifts but do not adopt him as his own. She believes that Hrothulf will "…repay ours sons most generously if he remember all we did for his benefit and enjoyment when he was a boy" (16). Wealtheow know the significance of keeping her sons as heirs of the throne to continue their family lineage as nobles of the Danes.

Beowulf, like Wealtheow, also recognizes the importance of order of succession within families. Not wanting to disturb this succession, Beowulf declines the queen of the Geats' offer of the throne upon her husband, Hygelac's, death . Instead of rushing for the throne himself, Beowulf supports Hygelac's son the rightful heir. However, Beowulf does offer to take on the guardianship of the young heir until he comes of age. Through this gesture of loyalty and respect, Beowulf proves himself ready for the throne.

Throughout Beowulf, lineage and family ancestry were revealed as important aspects to any Anglo-Saxon epic story. The watchman, recognizing Beowulf's father, allowed him to proceed with his mission, Wealtheow discouraged her husband's thought of giving the throne to anyone besides someone within their family, and Beowulf decline the offer of the throne because he did not want to disturb the order of succession to the throne and interfere with the rightful heir. Beowulf isn't only a story of heroic deeds, but also it reveals the concept of identity which is clearly essential within the poem.

"One view of artifical intelligence sees that, in the near future, independent machines will evolve and leave human far behind."

That's a quotation of Edward Fredkin from 17, which goes, in my opinion way to far beyond our time. I don't think there will be a great changing in the relationship between machines and humans for a long time in the future.

Nowadays the humans got the role of constructing, programming and improving machines, and that's the way it should resist. Machines aren't able to build themselves, there not complex enough to feel, think by themselves or learn by their own. Machines should help mankind in difficult situations or find solutions for problems.

Linguistically, machines should be able to write this essay after receiving the topic and a limit, how much they should write. Also, they should be able to correct my mistakes and use figures of speech directly.

Buy Language and machines term paper

Maybe in a couple of centuries, we will be able to construct mechanical doubles of humans, which can communicate with human beings and maybe with themselves - without just repeating or recognizing what they already known or heard before. But there's no use for a superior power which substitutes people's brain, so we won't be able to make our own decisions, machines would do that for us.

I dreamed that sometime in the future, machines will overtake the leadership of mankind, which lead to serious problems for human beings such as working for them, ruled by them, considered as slaves, praying to them like they were equal to god, who doesn't exist in a machine ruled world, of course. If sometimes the case of a machine ruled world is close to happen, the world becomes smaller, and we are gravitating towards becoming an advanced civilization that concentrates more on efficiency and less on compassion or emotions in general. The hearts and the minds (at least the natural ones) will suffer under the dictatorship of artifical intelligence. You must train your brain, machines must not. Your brain gets older an loses some memories, machines won't. You will be destroyed by corporal death, machines will resist things like aging process. We won't have any chance in a war against artificial intelligence which is superior in a physical and mental way. They got no emotions or feelings which could destroy them or increase their ability to think.

But in Fredkin's eyes we won't care much about that, because we won't be able to talk no more. In my eyes it's a long way to get there, but nobody would a machine to control mankind, so the necessairy of a security against thoughts like humiliating, control or destroy people is obvious. It's a cruel dream of our future, but I hope it won't come true.

Cheap Custom Essays on diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Type 1 diabetes results from the body's failure to produce any insulin, while Type diabetes is caused from the body's resistance to insulin or insulin deficiency. Approximately 17 million people in the United States have this disease. Unfortunately, about 1/ of these victims are unaware that they have it. The cause is unknown; however, genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles. Everyone needs to realize the seriousness of this disease and how it could affect you or your family.

CONCLUSION

A team approach is necessary for diabetes care and prevention of complications. It takes the physician to prescribe medications, the dietitian and diabetic educator to train the patient, and the patient working hard to achieve their prevention goals. Diabetes can be serious and life threatening if not well controlled. However, a person with diabetes can achieve anything anyone else can with proper control. For those of us who do not have it presently, the CDC says we should eat less sugar and fat and exercise more and our chances can drop as much as 58% in just a year period. We also should teach young people to eat healthy, lean meats, green and yellow vegetables, fresh fruits, and drink more water and less soft drinks. Diabetes can be a very serious and life-long disease, but if you take care of yourself it can be treated or prevented.

There have been many heroes in ancient Greece. They are the basis of Greek culture. Most myths in ancient Greece have revolved around these heroes. And most of these heroes had very alike characteristics. They all had special births, noble or common; they all had noble and good hearts, always trying to do the right thing; and they had special abilities and/or supernatural help. I will be zooming in on the adventures of Perseus. Based on the writings of Peter Stillman, I will show the basic generalizations that all heroes share in terms of Perseus' own adventures. Perseus, like most heroes, is grandson to a king (acrissus), has supernatural help (Hermes and Athena), and has a noble heart, help Danae and defeat evil king for her.

To first help understand how the story of Perseus goes, you have to know that Acrissus wanted a boy for a child, instead he got a girl. He went to Apollo's oracle, and she told him that he would have a grandson that will kill him. The only way to stop this would be to kill Danae now. Now the king knew the price for killing blood, so he imprisoned here in bronze walls, but Zeus impregnated her, and she had Perseus. Them Acrissus took her and the newborn in a chest and out to sea. This is where the next general characteristic comes in.

Danae and Perseus were found and raised by a kind seaman named dictys. He had an evil brother who was king of the island named Polydictys. He loved Danae but she would not marry him. His revenge was to kill Perseus. He thought long and hard. He would send him to hid death by killing Medusa who was impossible to kill; on account that if you looked at her you'd be turned to stone. Anyways, he invites Perseus to a wedding knowing he has no gift, Perseus being a noble person offers Medusa's head, which is exactly what the evil king wanted. This shows his noble heart; because even though he knew that killing that gorgon was next to impossible he did it anyways. This also ties in with having supernatural help.

Having the gods on his side, Athena and Hermes came down to help Perseus find medusa and have a way to kill her. Hermes helped Perseus trick the gray sisters into giving the location of the gorgons, and Athena gave Perseus her Aegis to help see how to cut off her head. Also, Perseus received an invisibility cap so it would be easy to kill her.

Write my Essay on persus and greek myths for me

All in all, Perseus like most heroes has many simple basic generalizations that makes him a hero. We expect heroes to have certain characteristics, certain mentality, and even certain situations. Stillman made good a good thesis on the ideas and thoughts that surround a hero myth, We all expect those things mentioned. So if I were to rate the story of Perseus, in tune with the thesis it would be a perfect story.

Living on the beautiful island of Okinawa, there was a lot to experience at the White Beach. I remember the overwhelming site I behold with each visit. My memory consisted of the blue sky, pure sand, intense sun, noticeable breeze and sparkling water. For me, White Beach was my place to gather peace of mind. Everything the beach had to offer I would take in. I look back now and miss the occasions spent in this sweet escape.

Walking down to the beach, I pass by the high standing rocks; their face having the appearance of a hard and rough surface. The darkness of the color draws in hands to caress; only to retreat in response to the razor like surface.

Closing my eyes briefly, I can feel the breeze tickling my arm hairs. In my ears I can hear the sound of gently breaking waves. The distinct taste of the mist seems to be clinging to my lips, leaving the taste of fresh salt to savor.

Standing with my shoes on, I feel a fool for not standing bare in the sand, knowing the warmth that is offered up by the glistening sand. Stepping out of my shoes and into the bright surface, I feel the heat sting from the afternoon baked sand. The whiteness of the shore is blinding as I gaze around. As my eyes are watering with sensitivity, I start to walk down the shore to do the ever-popular act of accumulation shells and what ever else the ocean has offered up for collection. Placing each shell in the palm of my hand, observing each and every one, I notice tier individuality. Each one having a unique color, a distinguished chip in their architecture, or a possible inhabitant. Many of times, thinking back and remembering, I had picked up what appeared to be a long abandoned shell, only to discover scurrying legs. The results of the animals ticklish and surprising act was the quick dropping of my hands contents. My heart always felt the immediate surprise.

Walking more along the seemingly unending shore, I slowly drifted into the water. Amazing coolness rushes through and chills my body, unleashing a rash of goose flesh all through my skin. The clearness of the water is an overwhelming sight. All depths are visible. Small tropical fish swimming around in schools at my legs as I slowly walk deeper into the aquarium world. I take a spontaneous dive under the surface of the water, giving my face a rush of the chilled salty water. It brings the potent taste for saltwater to my mouth and the ever so remembered sting to my nose. Being emerged in the water, I feel refreshed.

Making my way back to the dry land, I laid upon the hot sand and bake in the rays reaching down from the sun. Stretched out on the sand I enjoy the offerings of the beach. I set my mind free of all worldly thoughts, putting myself in my perfect place.

My time spent on White Beach has left me in awe of beauty. Having lived on the island of Okinawa, Japan, I am happy to say i would live there again. If the only reason was to experience the companionship of my beauteous lieu, I would spring at the opportunity without a moment of hesitation.

In a Midsummer Night's Dream, as well as in his other works, Shakespeare has referred to several classical sources. Through this process of rewriting and "modernization," the classics are kept alive. In this particular work, the four main stories can be tied together by works such as Ovid's Metamorphoses and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.

The story of the quarrel between Oberon and Titania, the King and Queen of the Fairies can be linked to the romances of the four youths, Lysander, Demetrius, Hermia, and Helena because they both drew from the Metamorphoses. Hermia swears "By the simplicity of Venus' doves," taking us back to the silver doves that drew the love-goddess away in the final stanza of Shakespeare's narrative poem based on the Metamorphoses. She also swears "by Cupid's strongest bow, by his best arrow with the golden head," an explicit allusion to the first book of the Metamorphoses. Hermia, then, is swearing her love for Lysander by Apollo's love for Daphne. The quarrel is also interwoven with the Metamorphoses because the name "Titania" is derived from Ovid, where it refers to a range of goddesses of the night.

The stories of the wedding between Theseus and Hippolyta and the preparations and performance of a play by local, common men can also be connected by the Metamorphoses. The play, an Ovid story of Pyramus and Thisbe, was performed at the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta. Pyramus and Thisbe, Salmacis and Hermaphroditus are book four of the Metamorphoses. Clearly, Shakespeare derived this love story from Ovid and incorporated it into Midsummer Night's Dream.

The wedding between Theseus and Hippolyta can also be interwoven with the story of the four romances between Lysander, Demetrius, Hermia and Helena. They both play a part in Chaucer's "The Knight's Tale." In lines 10-11, it states, "There wedded he the queen, Hippolyta, and brought her home with his to his country." The character of Theseus is also included in lines 645-646 where it states, "With Theseus and his squire principal, is risen, and looks on the merry day." The literary source of the romance of the young lovers in Theseus' charge is also "The Knight's Tale" in the Canterbury Tales. Initially, Shakespeare's chosen sources appear confusing, but upon examination, it becomes clear as to his ties and his intentions for them.

The European Union (EU) formerly called the European Economic Community. Initiated as the Common Market in 158, the EU now comprises 15 western European nationsFrance, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, Denmark, Ireland, United Kingdom, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Finland, and Sweden.

The EU has abolished tariffs and import quotas on nearly all products traded among the participating nations and established a common system of tariffs applicable to all goods received from nations outside the EU. It has also liberalized the movement of capital and labor within the EU and has created common policies in other economic matters of joint concern, such as agriculture, transportation, and business practices. The EU is now a strong trade block a group of countries having common identity, economic interests, and trade rules.

The EU integration has achieved for Europe what the U.S. constitutional prohibition on tariffs by individual states has achieved for the United States increased regional specialization, greater productivity, greater output, and faster economic growth. The free flow of goods and services has created large markets for EU industries. The resulting economies of large-scale production have enabled these industries to achieve much lower costs than they could have achieved in their small, single-nation markets.

One of the most significant recent accomplishments of the EU is the establishment of the so-called Euro Zone. In 000, 1 of the 15 EU members shared a common currencythe euro. Great Britain, Denmark, and Sweden have opted out of the common currency, at least for now.

Help with essay on EUROPEAN UNION VS NAFTA

Economists expect the euro to raise the standard of living of the Euro Zone members over time. By ending the inconvenience and expense of exchanging currencies, the euro will enhance the free flow of goods, services, and resources among the Euro Zone members. It will also enable consumers and businesses to comparison shop for outputs and inputs, and this will increase competition, reduce prices, and lower costs.

In 1 Canada, Mexico, and the United States formed a major trade block. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) established a free-trade zone that has about the same combined output as the EU but encompasses a much larger geographic area. NAFTA has greatly reduced tariffs and other trade barriers between Canada, Mexico, and the United States and will eliminate them entirely by 008.

By NAFTA employment has increased in the United States by more than 14 million workers sine it was founded, and the unemployment rate has sunk from 6. to 4. percent. Increased trade between Canada, Mexico, and the United States has enhanced the standard of living in all three countries.

Censorship Essay

Censor means to examine in order to suppress or delete any object that may seem objectionable. I believe censorship is wrong because certain materials may not be objectionable to some people. Censorship is used in radio and television to prevent the corruption of people's minds. Censorship is wrong because individuals should have the freedom to listen or watch what they want, whether or not it offends some, without interference.

The television is one place where censorship is strongly used in many different ways. One of the oldest and most common ways used to censor inappropriate words is to use a "bleep." I disagree with this method because whatever these people are saying is just words. Remember the saying "sticks and stone may break my bones but words will never hurt me?" These words will not harm anyone and if people are offended they don't have to listen. Another popular method of censoring television is to cit out scenes. TV stations will cut out a certain scene or scenes from a movie or television. I disagree with this method because it changes the way that the producer of these shows or movies intended them to be. If TV stations plan on cutting out scenes they should not air the show or movie at all. One last method of censorship commonly used in television is rating labels. Again, this is a method of censorship I disagree with. Although these ratings allow parents to protect their children from bad things, if a show is on TV it should be viewable by all audiences. Also most things being censored will be seen by most people in their lives anyway. Censorship in TV is a bad thing and should be reconsidered.

The music industry is a place where people experience censorship. One form of censorship in music is to play and edited version of a song. While this method filters out some harmful words, I think this is bad because it changes the musicians original song. This censoring takes out parts of the song he intended to be there. I think the radio shouldn't play these edited version, but play unedited version. Another popular method of censorship is to put parent advisory labels on CD's. These labels are bad because they don't allow underage people to buy certain CD's. Why should these underage people not be able to listen to bad words or inappropriate themes if it is part of real life. The government is trying to put a blanket over children's eyes until they get older. They want to brainwash the children so they will stop corruption in the world . One last way music is censored, just like television, is using "bleeps". These bleeps are terrible, annoying, and useless. They ruin songs that you are listening to. Who wants to sit and listen to a song littered with "bleeps", because I sure don't! If people don't want to hear "bad" words they should buy country music, and leave the rest of the world alone.

Buy Censorship term paper

Censorship is a terrible thing and it should be outlawed at some point. The government should stop trying to control the way the U.S. citizens live and focus on more important issues like the war in Afghanistan. Citizens should be left alone to live and not be constantly bothered by the annoyances of censorship.

Please note that this sample paper on Censorship is for your review only. Lady MacBeth

In great Literature, Authors to develop their characters through examples in the text, instead of just stating their traits. Writers do this so that the reader feels closer to the characters and so that the character seems realistic. In William Shakespeare's MacBeth, Shakespeare does a great job of establishing Lady MacBeth, one of the main characters, by demonstrating how she is ruthless, deceiving, and is devoid of a conscience.

"I have given suck, and know how tender 'tis to love the babe that milks me. I would, while it was smiling in my face, have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums and dashed the brains out, had I so sworn as you have done to this." (Act 1. sc.7, Lines 6-67) These harsh words, uttered by Lady MacBeth are a true example of her ruthlessness. MacBeth, the husband of Lady MacBeth, had just announced to her that he had decided not to follow through with their previous plan. Which was to slay Duncan. An outraged Lady MacBeth responds by speaking those words, which reveal her true, cruel nature.

Another passage in the book, which manifests a quality of Lady MacBeth's character, occurs in Act 1, sc.6 (Lines 7-78) where she speaks these words, "Your face, my thane, is as a book where men may read strange matters. To beguile the time, look like the time. Bear welcome in your eye, your hand, your tongue. Look like th' innocent flower, but be the serpent under 't." In this part of the book, King Duncan, whom MacBeth is supposed to murder, is coming to visit MacBeth's home. Lady MacBeth speaks to MacBeth, telling him to "look like th' innocent flower but be the serpent under 't." She is telling him that they need to put on a false front so that they can trick the king into believing that their intentions are good. This is just one of the many examples of how Lady MacBeth is two-faced and has an extremely deceptive nature.

Order Custom Lady MacBeth paper

Later in MacBeth, shortly after the king was slain by MacBeth's own hands, Lady MacBeth demonstrates another one of her unbecoming characteristics; she has no conscience. "My hands are of your color, but I shame to wear a heart so white." (Act . sc., Lines 8-8) Duncan has just been slain, and Lady MacBeth feels no guilt or remorse. She states that although her hands also are red with the king's blood, her heart is still white. She does not care about the horrible act that has just been committed. She saw it as something that was necessary and thinks little about the significance of what they've just done. Clearly proving that her character has no conscience.

Developing characters through examples from the text, instead of stating a character's traits, adds much to the story. Making it more interesting and entertaining. In William Shakespeare's MacBeth, Shakespeare develops his characters through their words and deeds, thus allowing the reader to come to their own conclusion about the nature of them. Please note that this sample paper on Lady MacBeth is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Summa de Arithmetica was produced by Luca Pacioli. He stressed the

solving of linear and quadratic equations. This book was great because it

was one of the first steps toward the type of arithmetic that we use

to solve the cubic he could not do it and said it was impossible. Later,

in the late 1400's, a man by the name of Scipione del Ferro took the

challenge of proving Pacioli wrong.

Ferros first did something quite interesting when he turned the standard

cubic equation (x^+mx=n) into a "depressed cubic" (ax^+cx+d=0). This

step was very important and so Ferro chose to keep his findings an

absolute secret. He chose to do this because he could use the depressed

Ferro almost met his death that he passed on his solution. The lucky boy

was Antonio Fior.

With his new knowledge Fior challenged Fontana, a.k.a Tartaglia, in 155. Right before the deadline Tartaglia figured out how to solve depressed cubics and made Fior look like a fool. Shortly after this a fruity man named Gerolamo Cardano entered the game of Xtreme math. He desired to learn much more about cubics from Tartaglia.

Cardano made such great contributions to the world that he felt he needed a biography written about himself and who better to do the job than Cardano! Once he was done with this thrilling story Cardano began to pratice medicine in Sacco. Here he indulged in gambling and even wrote a book on games of chance. Even with all these other activities going on, Cardano managed to become the greatest doctor in Europe. Geralomo Cardano had become a fabulous man. However, his son didn't exactly follow his father's footsteps. In the 1550's, Giambattista killed his wife and was beheaded in 1560. In fact, Geralomo somewhat took after his son. In 1570 he was sent to jail on charges of heresy. Just years after he got out of jail, Cardano died in 1576.

Now, back to the proof. Cardano wrote many letters to Tartaglia asking him for the solution to the cubic; all of these were rejected. It wasn't until 15 that Tartaglia revealed his knowledge to Cardano.

Ludovico Ferrari became Cardano's slave and friend in the 150's. Together they worked to solve advanced depressed cubics and made great progress. They discovered the solution for the quartic polynomial equation. Later they traveled to Bologna and read some of del Ferros' solutions to the cubic and got exactly what they needed to create the great theorem. Oh yeah, they took Tartaglia's goods and played him like a fool to create this theorem.

Animals have roamed the earth centuries before man had evolved. They live in various places on the Earth and are many benefits to our environment. However, there are some people around the world that like to exploit animals for their individual gain. It is important to know that these types of people don't understand the idea that animals were on the Earth first.

Jane Goodall is an anthropologist who studied the cognitive abilities of chimpanzees and their behavior in the mid-sixties. Upon her conclusions, she found that chimpanzees are quite smart and logical animals. As she began to write here books, Jane started referring to the animals as "he" or "she". Once this was reported, the human officials became outraged. The reason for this was back then they believed that animals had no brain or intelligence that a human would have. Jane continued to write about these animals regardless of what people thought. From here, she began to fight the idea that humans are superior to animals. Today, Jan tries to show people around the world that animals, especially chimpanzees, are very similar to human mind. She also proves that animals should have protection from exploitation and harm from other smart creatures.

We, as humans, don't understand the danger that we put animals in. We tend to shoot animals for sport, kill for food, and even capture them to perform research on them. I find it wrong to take innocent animals and have them experimented on to only help us. It is not fair that they have to be the ones, who are mutilated, brutally effected by chemicals, and killed for the benefit of one sole species. A solution to this problem would be to start experimenting on ourselves and see how we would feel. Also, each year, we tare down many natural rain forests. Among with the destruction of these forests go the lives of many exotic creatures. Every time we do this, we are not only harming them, but we are harming ourselves. Scientists and researchers report that in these rain forests, cures can be found to battle our illnesses and diseases. If we continue to destroy the homes of innocent animals not only will we be killing them but also ourselves. It is also important to think about why we have animal distinction between species today. The reason being is the destruction of their homes and the killing of them for fun. It is important to know that animals are allowed their equal rights regardless to their size, shape, and type.

From the pre-historic dinosaurs to the common house cat, all animals should have basic rights in order to survive in their natural habitat. It is very important to understand that we too are animals. We should respect all the animals on the earth regardless of their stature or type. We should also live in harmony and learn from them by safe and beneficial means.

The Case Against Moral Relativism. Pojman

"Who's to judge who's right or wrong?" In the case against moral relativism Pojman provides an analysis of Relativism. His analysis includes an interpretation of Relativism that states the following ideas Actions vary from society to society, individuals behavior depends on the society they belong to, and there are no standards of living that apply to all human kind. An example that demonstrates these ideas is people around the world eat beef (cows) and in India, cows are not to be eaten. From Pojman second analysis an example can be how the Japanese take of their shoes all the time before entering the house. In Mexico it is rare that people take off their shoes. They might find it wired or not normal. In his third analysis he gives that sense moral relativism and cultural relativism are tied together, that their can be no

It is evident that Phyllis Wheatley has a fire to write and express herself through her poetry, and seeks guidance and redemption through her faith.

The nature in which Phyllis Wheatley became a renowned poet is beneficial to know when reading her poetry. Because the Bible was probably the first book Phyllis encountered, it is no surprise that her faith in God is relished throughout her writings in Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral by Phyllis Wheatley, Negro Servant to Mr. John Wheatley, of Boston, in New England. The biography of Phyllis Wheatley says, "Responding to early indications of intellectual precociousness in Phyllis, the Wheatley family encouraged her to study the Bible and to read English and Latin literature, history, and geography." The poem On Imagination displays Phyllis's faith in God. Line 1-4 reads "For favours past, great Sir, our thanks are due, and thee we ask thy favours to renew, since in thy pow'r, as in thy will before, to soothe the griefs, which thou did'st once deplore." Another example in lines1-14 in To the University of Cambridge in New-England reads " How Jesus' blood for your redemption flows. See him with hands out-stretcht upon the cross Immense compassion in his bosom glows…" Phyllis' faith is flagrant when reading such poems as the latter. It seems as though Phyllis's masters were supportive in her writings, and she continued to encompass a fire for writing poetry. She was allowed through Master John Wheatley to publicize an elegy on the death of a popular Methodist evangelist, in which she gained her first fame as a poet. She later went on to publish her poems in England, and was also baptized during her stay. Many of her poems show that she has a desire to write in elegant style, as did the Greek poet Virgil. For instance, line 5 of To Maecenas, "…soon the same beauties should my mind adorn, and the same ardors in my soul should burn then should my song in bolder notes arise, and all my numbers pleasingly surprise…" As these lines indicate, Phyllis had a passion to write well as a poet and surprise her white peers. Phyllis also contested to slavery in many instances. In To Maecenas, she writes "But, I less happy, cannot raise the song, the fault'ring music dies upon my tongue." She contests that as a slave she cannot be happy and sing, and she doubts her voice would be heard. Again in the poem On Imagination, lines 4-1, Phyllis expresses her hatred of slavery, and hopes condemnation of slavery continues.

Phyllis Wheatley expressed her faith as well as her fire for writing poetry in her works. She also showed resistance to slavery, and a pattern of religion in her poetry. The theme Faith and Fire precisely describes Phyllis Wheatley's works, which reveal her faith in God and her fire for writing poetry.

China has a lot of promises to honor after entry the WTO, such as lowering the tariff level, canceling 400 import quotas, and allowing foreign companies investing into our telecommunications, banking, insurance, and tourism sectors. The Chinese government will also relieve the red tap for both the Chinese and foreign companies to do business in China.

The first challenge is the sharp competition brought by the foreign companies. Lowering tariff level, reducing quota, and relieving red tape means domestic companies lose the price superiority. Enormous amount of foreign companies will flow into Chinese market. Many famous big companies with good reputation and long history provide high level of services and products with lower price. They are consumer ¨C oriented and have rich experiences on marketing and advanced technology. They are sensitive to changing and very creative. Our domestic consumers will benefit from the competition, but many national companies are under the threaten of being eliminated from the market if they can not keep up with the latest technology to lower costs and provide the same level of services and products.

The second challenge is that our state-owned enterprises are still weak and poor ¨Cperforming. China has huge amount of state ¨Cowned enterprises that are under the government¡¯s protection for decades Although the government has been helping reform the state-owned enterprises, most of them are still suffer from low efficiency, outdated technology, backward style of management. Some managers are still not market-oriented. They retain the ways of thinking based on the planned economy that use absolute power to make decisions. Without the tariff and quota¡¯s protection, many of them will fall victim of market competition, which follows the principle of survival of the fittest.

The third challenge is how to keep the talents stay in national companies .As we know, most of the young people want to find a job in the foreign company because of the higher salary, better welfare, more arena for personal development, and high chances of self ¨Crealization. Many famous CEOs of the big companies know how to communicate with their employees, how to encourage and influence their employees, how to sale their ideas. However, Chinese CEOs are lacking of the experiences and concepts of how to be a real CEO. It is hard for them to keep their talent employees who are the foundation to the success of a company.
