Montana 148 Summary of pages 5-151
As David was making his way back to the ranch from his ride, he noticed his father and uncle arguing near the riverbank. David inched closer without being noticed to observe what was going on. He was not able to hear however; he assumed they were discussing Marie's accusations. David had some brief passing thoughts about shooting his uncle and ending all of the pain associated with his uncle's actions. David's hands were shaking so badly holding the gun; he put it away knowing that he never would have been able to fire a shot. He stayed long enough to see them both walking back to the ranch knowing things were OK for he time being.
When the family arrived back home from the ranch, Marie seemed to be feeling much better. The next day David went fishing with his friends, only to come home to hear that Marie had been murdered in her bed. David was sent next door to the neighbors' house until a decision could be made about how to handle the situation. Later that evening, David told his father that Uncle Frank was at the house earlier in the day and Len (his deputy) had seen Frank go into the Hayden's house. Three days later, Wesley brought Frank to the house to discuss Marie's death. Frank did not deny his involvement and Wesley locked Frank in the basement until the legal ramifications were worked out. Later that evening Wesley's parents came to visit because Gloria (Frank's wife) had told them what Wesley had done with Frank. Julian demanded to speak with Frank but Wesley told Julian that he could not honor his request. Wesley began to try and explain what Frank had done to Marie and some of the other Indian girls. Julian would not believe Wesley and accused him of being jealous of his brother. When Wesley told his father that molestation was not the only crime Frank was being held for, Julian demanded to know the reason. Wesley told him that Frank murdered Marie. Julian refused to believe what he was saying and left the house.
The next day, a truck came to the Hayden's house with four men in it. They were sent by Julian to release Frank. Neither Wesley nor Len were around to stop the men from coming on to the property. David was in the house and the first to notice the men. He was in the process of calling out to his mother when she came out of the back bedroom carrying her husband's shotgun. She fired warning shots at the men and demanded, "You get away from there! Get away from the house-do you hear me?" All of a sudden Len McCauley came over from his house indicating the men should move away from the house, he said something else to them and they began to turn back towards their truck.

When Wesley received a message about the happenings at his home, he returned at once. He went over to speak with Len about the scene and found out from him that Julian had approached Len to release Frank and Len turned down his request. After this episode, Gail begged Wesley to let Frank go because she was afraid that something would happen and David would be hurt in the process. Wesley went down into the basement with the intention of releasing Frank, however, he came back up the stairs alone. Wesley said he could not release him because "Frank was guilty as sin. He told me as much." Gail was upset but she understood that Frank was not remorseful about his crimes and Wesley could not live with himself if he did not arrest his brother for the murder of Marie Little Soldier.
