Comparing plays from different times and cultures

The Swaggering Soldier was written in Rome by Platutus at about 00 B.C. It is a very typical ancient Roman comedy. It has the plot of the vast majority of comedies written at that time in Rome. A young man and women wish to be married because they are in love. However obstacles are put in the way to prevent this from happening. The main obstacles they come across is the swaggering soldier, Pyrogopolynices, who kidnaps the young girl. In roman comedies it is a convention that the young couple are pretty helpless to solve their own problems without the help of a cheeky and quick-witted slave who talks to directly to the audience and ultimately ensures that the play has a happy ending. The view of marriage in Roman comedies is a very cheerful and positive one. It is not surprising that Modern English pantomimes have taken form Roman comedies; the young and helpful slave could turn up believably as Cinderella, Prince Charming and Buttons.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century playwrights tended to take much more gloomy view of the working of the human heart. Don Juan Comes Back From The War was written by Odon von Horvath in Germany in 14. This play is very pessimistic. At the end of the First World War an unnamed man returns to his town in Germany. He is known only by his nickname - the symbolic name for any unscrupulous womaniser who must have any women he sees. Which he is not at all like as he does not fall in love with the women but they fall in love with him, accusing him of compromising them and hindering him in the search of his lost true love, which he had to leave due to his position fighting in the war. When he finally tracks her down, he discovers that two years before she had gone mad and died because he had left her. He is taken to her gravestone, but because of the war he has a terminal heart condition and he dies at her gravestone. Now we see that love in this play is something destructive.

These two plays contrast each other. The first play is optimistic about the role played by marriage in society and that it is a solution to a long chain of problems. The second take the view that love is more fragile and cannot be relied on to bring happiness to people who are affected by it.

In The Swaggering Soldier the main character is based on a joke that the romans always enjoyed - a character claims to be heroic and courageous fighter as well as Gods gift to women, but is unmasked as being a figure of ridicule who is a coward in a fight and a failure to the fairer sex. For the Romans war was clearly something glorious, a way in which men could prove their virility and gain admiration, especially from women. Whereas in Don Juan, the reality in war was brought home to people very harshly. There was no glory, nothing to strive for or brag about. This twentieth century play does not produce superheros of the kind that Pyropolynices wish they could be, it produces physical and emotional wrecks like Don Juan, who had lost everything through the war.

Each generation seems to create its own theatrical rules. People have a clear idea of what a play should be about and rejects any piece of theatre that breaks the rules or go against the audiences preconceived ideas. Romans did not expect their theatre to be at all Naturalistic. They accepted that the theatre was artificial and took the masks as a quick an easy way of identifying characters and explaining that characters function in the plot. However in the middle of the nineteenth century, when Don Juan was written, things changed dramatically. Naturalism came in, and although audiences were shocked at first it was clear that there were audiences that wanted to see people like themselves encountering the same kind of problems like them. Don Juan Comes Back From The War is very realistic. Hovath made very realistic and recognisable human characters, but he is very selective about which characters he puts in and leaves out, as we never see Don Juan interact with any other male characters. This makes the play seem bewilderingly real and unreal at the same time. It is as if Horvath knows what naturalism is and then quite deliberately tweaks it so the reality within his play is not quite the same as in real life. Don Juan and the women he meets are just slightly exaggerated- not like the masked clowns of ancient Rome, but still a bit disorted, so that we are a bit disturbed and can feel Don Juans nightmare just as scarily as he does it.
