Representing ESL Students in the School Community

The article I read was called Representing ESL Students in the School Community, this article was about teachers having to deal with people treating ESL students mean. Many ESL teacher have been faced with situations where the testing they have done isn't at accommodations level or even heard people say that student who do not speak English are being "dumb". Situations like this are certainly not a conducive to a positive educational atmosphere. So what is a teacher to do? One thing an ESL teacher should do is enlarge her perspective, by that I mean see the big picture before jumping to conclusion. Well they talked about 10 principles of Successful Representation. I will tell you a little about each one of them. Principle #1 says to Educate, educate, educate, educate, educate! Because ignorance is the root of negativity and also you're a very important part of the building and educated community. Principle # If possible work from the top not from the bottom, because if you do then that means you have to influence people to help you if your in the bottom level. Principle # Make sure to put yourself in their shoes when you're going to make a presentations or make a proposals. Never forget how it can effect the person your doing the presentation to. Principle #4 Go to board meetings department meetings and participate in decision-making that way they have the input of an ESL teacher sometimes you can make a difference on their vote. Principle #5 Make friends with people in high places such as program representatives, testing coordinator, scheduler, and administrator. These are the people who make decisions on ESL students. What a better way then to be on their good side. Principle #6 ESL teachers need to establish a positive professional relationship with other teachers. In with that in mind it makes it easier for ESL teachers to approach others to make them aware of his or her concerns. Principle #7 Be Patient. Remember that people's attitudes change quickly. That it takes time for change to kick in. Principle #8 be persistent. More and better progress is made through persistent. Principle # be proactive in representing your program. Give them a situation where you can celebrate student successes or accomplishments. Principle #10 Work on resistance. From time to time teachers will encounter genuine resistance rather then what might be explained as an inadvertent oversight.

Hopefully if ESL teacher would consider using the Principles of Successful Representation it would help them out. It would also help to overcome resistance. The more people you have influenced to understand the issues, the more people can help in exerting their influence for change. I really liked the principles that they talked about in the article.

Violence is the last refugee of the incompetent Issac Asimov. Ignorance and superstition reigned on the frontier of the Mississippi River. The cruelty of the southern plantation owners and the general lawlessness of the frontier all attributed to the violence that occurred throughout the book. Whether murderous criminals, a feuding family, or an angry mob was committing this violence, Huck was forced to digest and overcome these scenes, and at the same time the reader learned more of life on the Mississippi River of the 1840's.

One night while on the river, Huck and Jim stumble across a wrecked steamboat, and find a couple of outlaws contemplating the murder of a fellow outlaw. "I'm for killin' himand didn't he kill old Hatfield jist the same wayand don't he deserve it?" (7). This scene of individual violence adds to the image of 1840's river life. Even though the west was becoming more and more civilized, a general sense of lawlessness and violence still existed, not unlike the lawlessness and adventure depicted in classical western movies of the 0th century. The violence, though, wasn't between cowboys and Indians, good guys and bad guys. The violence occurred between groups of individual ruffians, a band of outlaws whose greed was strong enough to break the ties they have to one another and commit these homicidal acts. "Well, by and by somebody said Sherburn ought to be lynched. In about a minute everybody was saying it; so away they went, mad and yelling, and snatching down every clothes line the come to to do the hanging with" (14). The most pertinent example of senseless violence in the mid 1th century occurred in the form of lynching. Whether a large mob or a small band committed the act, it defied the laws of constitutional justice. No trial was served; only the resolve of a senseless group was carried out. Sherburn, though, through a somewhat contradicting speech, saved himself by indicting the cowardice of the mob. Though no justice was ever served, deep down Huck knew the Karma Police would catch up with Sherburn, and was thus able to digest the events he had just encountered and get on with his life.

Of all Huck's adventures, the feud chilled him the most. His experiences with the feud and the senseless violence that accompanied it would be engraved into his mind for the rest of his life. "I wish I hadn't ever come ashore that night to see such things. I ain't ever going to get shut of themlots of times I dream about them" (116). For the families involved, violence settled itself as their way of life; their life completed when they died. For Huck and the reader, it showed just how gruesome life could be, and how easily hatred can control one's life.

No matter what type of violence Huck saw, be it murder, feuding, or lynching, he was able to digest and comprehend the scenes he encountered. Each violent scene further painted the picture of life on the Mississippi river of the mid 1th century. Each discovery Huck makes adds to both his character and to the story. Indeed, Huck's adventures bring not only entertainment, but also lessons of violence and honor. Please note that this sample paper on Huck Finn's Digestion of Violence is for your review only. ¡§The End Justify the Means¡¨

Every action has its consequences, sometimes desirable while other times undesirable. And all of our actions carried out are somehow meant to satisfy our needs or to fulfill our desires. Although, in this pursuit of achieving our goals, we do not want to harm other people but our actions are so blind, rather we are so blind that our actions see no morality. The ¡¥want to¡¦ we started with has already been changed into ¡¥have to¡¦. The phrase ¡¥the end justifies the means¡¦ connotate the meaning that what all that matters is the final result and not that how it was reached.

One thing which I would like to bring into readers attention is that, even though Machiavelli did believe in the philosophy of final result, but he never wrote that end justifies the means. His Italian original, si guarda al fine, has often been mistranslated as ¡§the end justifies the means¡¨.

Moreover to prove his point, he illustrates many historical examples. To begin with, he considers that it is good for a prince to be generous but generosity sometimes does not work well. Pope Julius II, although made use of his generosity in order to gain the papacy, then decided not to maintain it in order to be able to wage wars; on the contrary, the present king of France has waged many wars without imposing extra taxes on his subjects, only because of his parsimony.

Moving on further, he tells that no doubt a price should be merciful but sometimes that can be dangerous for him and cruelty, normally considered to be wrong/ bad, can be helpful. For example, Cesar Borgia was considered cruel; nonetheless; his cruelty had brought order to Romagna while Florentine people, who, in order to avoid being considered cruel, allowed the destruction of Pistoia. Finally, if it is good for a prince to either keep or not to keep his words and as a result to be loved by his public or not? According to Machiavelli, ¡§ Everyone see what you seem to be, few perceive what you are, and those few don¡¦t dare to contradict the opinion of the many who have the majesty of the state to defend them, and in the actions of all men, and especially of princes, where there is no impartial arbiter, one must consider the final result. Let a prince therefore act to seize and to maintain the state; his methods will always be judged honorable and will be praised by all; for ordinary people are always deceived by the appearances and the outcome of the thing and in this world there is nothing but ordinary people.

It seems quite amazing that most of the people do act according to Machiavelli¡¦s philosophy but not even a small percent is ready to agree that they do so. Even though I agree to Machiavelli¡¦s thinking but I still do not think that it is correct to hurt other people to get what you want. I remember that last year when I took a Morphological Biology course (which includes dissection of live as well as dead animals); I met into an argument with my professor about killing of innocent animals. My professor did try to explain me that it is worth it as it will eventually help curing diseases of those animals as well as human beings but I was still relentless. Later, I came to know that one of my batch-mate found a cause which makes pig¡¦s digestive system bleed, which in severe situations can be fatal, and how it could be cured. I was awestruck and now did agree to my professor¡¦s rationalization.

It is quite a debatable issue and if argued it seems impossible for me to decide which one is right, but if the end is a good deed then I think that the saying ¡§the end justifies the means¡¨ does hold true.

Q1. The book is called 'That was then, this is now' and the author is S.E. Hinton

Q. A) If I were Bryon, then I would probably have thought about turning Mark into the cops for a lot longer than he actually did. I would have tried to slowly convince Mark that it was a bad idea and that he should stop selling them. If he continued selling them, then I would wait a little while to get some extra cash and then turn him into the cops, as Bryon had done which made Mark turn "White" (Pg. 117). It would have been difficult to stop him dealing drugs because the text makes us perceive Mark to be an opportunist, strong minded and manipulative.

Q. B) One part I really liked was when Mark and Bryon picked up Angela Shepherd when she was drunk and gave her some more booze to knock her out. Then they got a pair of scissors and snipped off all her hair and left her outside her house. I liked this part because it shows Mark being rebellious and seeking revenge for what she did to him, and his excuse for it was "she coulda had me "killed" (Pg. 87)

Q. C) If you tried to judge this book by its cover, you would have figured half of the plot out. The title suggests that the book is written in past tense and that something big happened a while ago. The illustration shows that Mark and Bryon are good mates, when in the book, it shows that they started to become arrogant and rude to each other.

Q. Bryon and Mark are physically the same, but mentally quite a lot different. Bryon and Mark have both got a tough reputation, a strong build and they like to pick fights together. Mark is tenacious, he chooses to think that the world doesn't change, and that everything he does is the right way of doing it. Bryon, on the other hand, is more adaptable to what happens around him, and becomes more mature and noble than Mark.

Q4. Cathy seems to me like a believable character. She has a strong connection between M&M and herself, and acted believably when M&M went missing. Another part where she acted like a real person is when Mark leaped out of the car and punched some guy in the nose. She acted really angry, and Byron realized that if he had done it, she wouldn't think of him as a hero (Pg. ?)

Q.5 "Don't drag me into this, I thought. Don't try to make me blind just because you are. Aloud I said "I called the Cops" and I felt as if I was talking in my sleep. Mark went white"

I chose this piece because just when you thought you knew Bryon inside out, he does something completely unpredictable to his best friend

Q.6 This book has taught me about the choices we make in life. All choices have consequences, whether its good or bad, depends on the choices we make. The consequences of some choices could be imprisonment, or death, but some consequences could earn you money, or a promotion. Bryon's choice about turning Mark into the cops seems like a bad idea at first, but later on, Mark might've realized that it was for his own good. This book has also taught me that the influence of money can make anyone do just about anything, no matter what the consequences are.

Q.7 Something else I want to say about the text is that it is quite an enjoyable book, and that I would recommend it to anyone.

Healthy means having or indicating good health in your body or mind. Being healthy means feeling good. Being healthy is one of the better things in life. When a person is healthy, that person would be able to do or achieve anything in his or her own way. A healthy person is a happy person. Even if a person is healthy, they could still become ill. Being healthy is everything dealing with you in body and mind. In body, the person could be strong and healthy. In mind, the person has a feeling of goodness and achievement towards themselves. They feel good about themselves and people can see a good change in them. The person will have positive thoughts and not negative thoughts.

Eating the right kinds of food keeps your body healthy and makes you feel good. When a person is healthy, they tend to feel good about themselves and their body. Eating healthy, being active, and feeling good about you are the key ingredients to having a healthy lifestyle. When a person eats healthy food, like one of their daily food groups in the food pyramid grain, poultry, dairy, and etc. they will be able to have enough strength and energy to last them a whole day.

When you keep your body strong, well, and clean, you are being healthy. In order to be healthy, the person will have to eat the right kind of food, exercise daily, take a shower, keep him/herself clean, and stay well. People who are healthy are likely to have the background of being and staying drug free. Junk food is not one of the things people eat to be healthy. Eating junk food affects your body and can make you sick.

In order for a person to be healthy and stay healthy, they have to exercise daily, eat the right kinds of food, staying clean, and that person would feel good about themselves in the inside and outside. In the inside, they will feel good about themselves. That person won't be worrying about their weight or how their appearance may look like because they feel beautiful in the inside just by staying healthy. In the outside, the person will feel good and strong. They will have a positive self-esteem about themselves. They can be able to do or achieve anything that comes into the person's way without having negative thoughts.

Write your Healthy Me, I Feel Good research paper

If a person were to eat a lot of junk food, drink a lot of soft drinks, and do things that could destroy their health, they are destroying their body. If they don't eat the right kinds of food, exercise daily, and stay clean, they could kill themselves faster and they could easily catch a sickness and die from it, because they don't have enough strength to fight the sickness. In their mind, they will have negative thoughts and not positive thoughts. They will put themselves down and also everyone around them, including their loved ones. They won't have the strength to do anything, except just sleep, eat, and talk. In other words, they will become very lazy, because they won't have enough energy to do anything.

So, in order to stay healthy, we have to eat the right kinds of food, exercise daily, and stay clean so that we can feel good about ourselves inside and outside. If we don't eat healthy and stay healthy, we might become lazy or catch a sickness really fast and die. So, I leave you with this quote " Healthy Me, I Feel Good".Please note that this sample paper on Healthy Me, I Feel Good is for your review only. In the film The Mighty directed by Peter Chesolm something said by Kevin was ''Every word is part of a picture, every sentence is a picture, all you do is let your imagination connect them together.'' Although the book was compared to the movie by one significant scene, there seems to have many more differences than similarities. In the movie Loretta takes over Iggy's role while in the book Iggy is the one who comes into the apartment. In the book the main character, Max, seems to be more bitter and alike to his father as compared to the movie. Kenny Kane seems to trust his son more so in turn he reveals his lawless plans to him.

In the book Iggy is the one to communicate with Kenny but in the movie Loretta is the one to talk with them. In the movie all that Iggy does is to introduce Kenny and Max to the old lady's apartment. In contrast to that in the book Iggy does all the dirty work such as driving away the cops. A quote from the book is ''I said, come back with a search warrant, you want to see what I keep under my bed, but I let em have a good look from the door, satisfy'em you weren't there.''(Philbrick 11) In the book all that Loretta does is to bring in the pizza a very minor role. A thought of Max's in the book is " Loretta comes in and Max narrates ''She's got this pizza box in her hands, holding it out like a present.''( 115) The largest difference is that in the movie Loretta is almost strangled by Kenny and this causes a flashback in Max's mind that shows his father killing his mother.

In the chapter that we read in the book Max seems to be bitter and not caring. In one instance Max attempts to peer out the window bit the window was covered with frost. He says to the reader "I'm trying to see through the curtains out the old lady's window when it finally gets light, but the snow is stuck to the glass and everything is fuzzy, which is pretty much how I feel.(115) During

Write my Essay on The Mighty Anaylisis for me

the time that Kenny and Max Kane are waiting for Iggy they search for food in the lady's

apartment and find only cereal and rotten food which seems to make Max even more resentful.

Max says to the audience '' There's nothing in the refrigerator that hasn't already gone bad, so

I eat a bowl of cornflakes with water and I'm so hungry it almost tastes good.(117)

During the course of the book Kenny Kane trusts Max much more than he does in the movie. Kenny tell Max what he wants to do to make money with his son after his ''great escape.'' He tells Max about his plans to create a travelling church in a nice RV to rip people off. During the movie Kenny would not let Max go but during the book he does momentarily. Max narrating says ''The pizza box is sitting there on the table, but my father says we cant't eat anything touched by her dirty hands, so he walks me out into theat dark little kitchen and he unties me and we go through the cupboards and find mostly boxes of prunes and old cereal.(117) Also a way that Kenny was trusting of Max was to talk about his escape plans in front of Max. Kenny says ''Get me a firearm and some transportation''

There are some similarities between the movie and the book ,but overall they are very differant. Lorreta is the main instigator in the movie while Iggy serves her role in the book. In the book Kenny Kane tells Max all about his plans whitch implies trust. In the movie Max seems to be more receptive than in the book. The pschological definition of denial is stated to be an

unconscious defense mechanism characterized by refusal to acknowledge painful realities, thoughts,

or feelings.

Its hard lines and a sideways ending . . . . 'The Breaker will write no more verse

- Lieut. H. H. Morant to Lieut. G. R. Witton the night before the execution.

Since I first watched the movie Breaker Morant about 15 years ago, I have been captivated by the story of Lieutenant Harry Harbord Morant and the Bushveldt Carbineers of the Boer War. The mistreatment of Morant and his fellow officers fueled my interest in his life and writings. Although he is a minor poet, his life story makes his work important in the history of the injustices of man and war. Ill continue to work on this page and add his poetry as I can.

Help with essay on Breaker morant

Short Bio

Harry Harbord Morant, born Edwin Henry Murrant, was born around 1865, most likely in Bridgwater, Somerset, England. Morant grew up in England, leaving for N Queensland, Australia, in 188 in order to avoid debt and discharge from the Royal Naval College.

In Australia, he was a breaker of horses, and thus he used the pen name Breaker Morant for the verse and ballads he submitted and had published in the Sydney magazine The Bulletin. It is said that he wrote some 60 poems, starting in 181. He worked in Queensland and New South Wales through his skill as a rider and horse-breaker.

In 100, Morant volunteered to go to South Africa to fight with other Australian horsemen in the South Australian Mounted Rifles. After a stint there, he returned to England and engaged to the sister of his good friend Captain Hunt. Morant enlisted in 101 with the Bushveldt Carbineers to fight the Boers in the Northern Transvaal. In this unit, he fought with Hunt and with two men Lieutenants Peter Handcock and George R. Witton, with whom he would be end up indicted on murder charges.

On August 5, 101, Capt. Hunt and 17 of his Carbineer men rushed a Boer farmhouse and were surprised with four times as many of the enemy as expected. Hunt was killed and mutilated, and his death and subsequent slaughter enraged Morant. Morant captured and exacted his revenge by executing Visser, a Boer found wearing an English jacket, and other Boer prisoners. A German missionary named Hesse was also killed after Morant had suspicions about his motives in speaking with Boer prisoners. As Witton (107/18) so eloquently wrote, War is calculated to make mens natures both callous and vengeful, and when civilised rules and customs are departed from on one side, reprisals are sure to follow on the other (p. 58).

A British court of inquiry was appointed to investigate and court-martial members of the Carbineers who were supposedly involved in these Boer and civilian murders. To evade the negative press that would surround the trial, the press were not permitted in the court and the proceedings were undisclosed. Major Thomas, an Australian lawyer unseasoned in cases of this kind, was appointed to their defense. The court-martial began in January 10, and Morant and Handcocks death sentences were signed by Lord Kitchener on February 4, 10. Wittons death sentence was reduced to life in prison.

Morant and Handcock were shot at the old Pretoria gaol on February 7, 10. Witton served time in prison until his sentence was overturned by the British House of Commons on August 11, 105. In 107, Witton published his book on his experiences, Scapegoats of the Empire.
