Its hard lines and a sideways ending . . . . 'The Breaker will write no more verse

- Lieut. H. H. Morant to Lieut. G. R. Witton the night before the execution.

Since I first watched the movie Breaker Morant about 15 years ago, I have been captivated by the story of Lieutenant Harry Harbord Morant and the Bushveldt Carbineers of the Boer War. The mistreatment of Morant and his fellow officers fueled my interest in his life and writings. Although he is a minor poet, his life story makes his work important in the history of the injustices of man and war. Ill continue to work on this page and add his poetry as I can.

Short Bio

Harry Harbord Morant, born Edwin Henry Murrant, was born around 1865, most likely in Bridgwater, Somerset, England. Morant grew up in England, leaving for N Queensland, Australia, in 188 in order to avoid debt and discharge from the Royal Naval College.

In Australia, he was a breaker of horses, and thus he used the pen name Breaker Morant for the verse and ballads he submitted and had published in the Sydney magazine The Bulletin. It is said that he wrote some 60 poems, starting in 181. He worked in Queensland and New South Wales through his skill as a rider and horse-breaker.

In 100, Morant volunteered to go to South Africa to fight with other Australian horsemen in the South Australian Mounted Rifles. After a stint there, he returned to England and engaged to the sister of his good friend Captain Hunt. Morant enlisted in 101 with the Bushveldt Carbineers to fight the Boers in the Northern Transvaal. In this unit, he fought with Hunt and with two men Lieutenants Peter Handcock and George R. Witton, with whom he would be end up indicted on murder charges.

On August 5, 101, Capt. Hunt and 17 of his Carbineer men rushed a Boer farmhouse and were surprised with four times as many of the enemy as expected. Hunt was killed and mutilated, and his death and subsequent slaughter enraged Morant. Morant captured and exacted his revenge by executing Visser, a Boer found wearing an English jacket, and other Boer prisoners. A German missionary named Hesse was also killed after Morant had suspicions about his motives in speaking with Boer prisoners. As Witton (107/18) so eloquently wrote, War is calculated to make mens natures both callous and vengeful, and when civilised rules and customs are departed from on one side, reprisals are sure to follow on the other (p. 58).

A British court of inquiry was appointed to investigate and court-martial members of the Carbineers who were supposedly involved in these Boer and civilian murders. To evade the negative press that would surround the trial, the press were not permitted in the court and the proceedings were undisclosed. Major Thomas, an Australian lawyer unseasoned in cases of this kind, was appointed to their defense. The court-martial began in January 10, and Morant and Handcocks death sentences were signed by Lord Kitchener on February 4, 10. Wittons death sentence was reduced to life in prison.

Morant and Handcock were shot at the old Pretoria gaol on February 7, 10. Witton served time in prison until his sentence was overturned by the British House of Commons on August 11, 105. In 107, Witton published his book on his experiences, Scapegoats of the Empire.
