Marriage Today

Marriage is less valued today than ever before.

Marriage and the way we view it today, differs greatly from the past. We no longer have to be married to be a family. Our views and opinions on marriage and its meaning have changed considerably. Marriage isn't necessarily less valued, it's just viewed differently.

The fact that the divorce rate has doubled in the last twenty years could lead us to believe that marriage isn't important to us anymore. Instead of persevering and working at married life, people are more frequently choosing to end their relationships. However, these divorced couples seem to be merely opting out of poor quality relationships to look for something better. In the past divorce was frowned upon, we were expected to carry on regardless of whether we were happy or not. Until 14, there was no financial help available for divorce cases. Making the process easier and cheaper has given people the opportunity to leave 'empty shell' marriages behind. For example in 11, 75% of women and 80% of men divorced before the age of 5 were remarried within 10 years. These figures show that we haven't dismissed the idea of marriage. Repeated remarriage doesn't mean we take marriage lightly, just that society has changed and we're not expected to put up with being unhappy. People are demanding a better quality of marriage, it might take two or three attempts to get it right.

Custom Essays on marriage today

With the majority of one-parent families being created through divorce, we can't use lone parents as an example of marriage being less valued. Lone parent families are often only temporarily in this situation and like divorcees go on to remarry.

On the surface, the significant decline in marriage can appear to suggest its unimportance. This can simply reflect an increase in cohabitation. Attitudes have changed, it's quite acceptable to have a sexual relationship and children outside wedlock. Living with a partner can be as strong and binding as marriage. Many people choose to cohabit and have a family. They're married in every sense of the word, only without the certificate. If anything it reinforces the idea that marriage is very important. Ensuring we have chosen the right person to be our partner before committing ourselves. Many cohabiting couples go on to get married later. Again, we have more choices nowadays, we're not expected to rush into things we're not sure of. The cost of a wedding ceremony must also be taken into consideration. For the average family, finding thousands of pounds for something they're living quite happily without isn't always easy.

Less than half of today's weddings are a traditional religious ceremony. A civil ceremony is a popular option. This sort of wedding can be held anywhere and involve almost anything. Some will view this as trivialising marriage, rewriting vows and choosing bizarre locations for the ceremony. However the couples involved must be taking things pretty seriously to go to such lengths. After all, it's their day and they're personalising things because it is so special to them. With church membership and attendance down we see an increasing number of couples doing things their own way. This is down to attitudes and beliefs changing and with it the idea of what marriage is about.

Conventional roles within the family are changing. Some women no longer want to be a mother and housewife first. Their expectations of marriage are different from the past. Careers for both sexes can be priority to create a stable environment for relationships and children later on. This confirms the value of marriage. The average age at marriage has increased.

The difference between the past and the present is the choices we have. If we're unhappily married we have the option to change things. If we choose to cohabit there's no strain on us to marry if we're not ready. When we do marry we can say how and where. Modern life demands a certain quality in relationships. We want to get more out of a relationship outside the home. We want to be friends with our partner and spend free time together. Marriage isn't less valued today, the way we live our lives has changed and so have our reasons for choosing married life.

Barnes and Noble Pushes Books

Conceptual Application? by Rusty Korhonen

Barnes and Noble's strategy is simple; capitalize on a customer demand for inexpensive books. This was a cost leadership and a differentiation strategy. Barnes and Noble identified a gap in the publishing industry, which primarily focused on blockbuster types of books and marquee authors that "rocketed to the best seller list" that the publishing industry in turn sold at a premium. These best sellers were not big profit sources for Barnes and Noble, in contrast Barnes and Noble identified, perhaps through its process of data mining and customer focused research, that its customers wanted less expensive books. Barnes and Noble hoped to get a bigger piece of a shrinking pie; research showed that the number of households that purchased hardcover books actually declined and book sales dwindled throughout the industry. Barnes and Noble created a capability and possibly a core competency through its discovery of this demand and the intimate knowledge of its customer's demands.

The cost leadership strategy consisted of publishing less expensive books that their customers demanded. By publishing these books internally they increase their profits. Differentiation was also prevalent in this strategy. Barnes and Noble focused outside of best seller categories, which account for only % of their sales, and thus they didn't compete with their high profile publishers. This also allowed Barnes and Noble to retain the magnet of best selling books that attracted customers to their stores. The focus of publishing classics, atlases, illustrated coffee table books, and niche publishing markets such as out of print books, allowed Barnes and Noble to reconfigure new value and will eventually affect the share price.

Barnes and Noble's strategy was sound and with the reallocation of resources should be poised to succeed. The conservative implementation of this strategy doesn't commit all of Barnes and Noble's resources at once and the success of the self published illustrated "coffee table" books points toward the success of this deeper venture into publishing. The mistakes made by Tommy Hilfiger Corp and Borders aren't good comparisons because the venture of Barnes and Noble focuses on a market niche. Hyperion Robert Miller's comments that "the niches Barnes & Noble is targeting will still leave room for general-interest publishers." I agree with Mr. Miller's assessment that Barnes and Noble's move is savvy since they dont pay a 50% markup [to a publisher], they can apply that advantage to price and still make more money than publishers selling the same Charles Dickens title. This makes solid business sense and the by not alienating the best selling publishers it stands to loose little.

Barnes and Noble also leveraged its buying power to force changes on the publishing industry. Some of its current supplier publishers are adapting to this demand as Stuart Dolgins aptly described his firm's changes to accommodate Barnes and Noble's demand, were competing against ourselves, but if I didnt do this, somebody else would." The publishing industry is ripe for change of this type. Like the music industry and the problems it currently has with the Internet and illegal copying of music, the publishing industry is content to demand high margins despite the cries of its consumers for lower prices. Barnes and Noble identified this customer demand and appropriated the resources to capture this share of the market. If Barnes and Noble succeeds in reconfiguring a new value for itself it will reshape the publishing industry through a reallocation of resources; Barnes and Noble will become the most efficient user of the available resources and thus reconfigure the industry's supply chain. This will force other publishing companies to follow suit or find other markets and there will be winners and losers. The winners will ultimately be those firms that capture additional profits; the winners will also be the budding authors that are overlooked because of the risk they pose to a quick profit, as well as the consumers who have demanded less expensive books.

Based on this information I am indeed attracted to Barnes and Noble stock at its current price. I believe that the cost leadership and a differentiation strategy is well though out and has been well executed so far. I believe that Barnes and Noble will stand in the winner's circle; along with budding (if not frustrated) authors like myself and many happy customers.

In "A Rose for Miss Emily", William Faulkner uses a setting from which he is both familiar and knowledgeable. For he grow-up in the south, some would say that he is a die-hard southern. "A Rose for Miss Emily" is set in a town that resembles the town in which he grow-up in as child and men in her life.

Perhaps the passing of Miss Emily's father is the best thing that could happen to Miss Emily. After all she is 0 and not married, in the era in which the story is set most young ladies married well before they are 0 years old. While her father was alive he turned away any suitor that would call on Miss Emily. Now she has the chance to meet and marry someone this would be a difficult task at her age. But she is like a loaded pistol waiting to go off it not handle with gentle caring hands.

The character Homer Barron, could have been chosen as a suitor for many reasons one that comes to minds is he is the exact opposite of Miss Emily. He is "a Yankee, big, ready man with a big voice and eyes lighter than his face" (page 1). Homer was a northern and day laborer, not one that a young lady of the South would even, consider especially Miss Emily Grierson. Miss Emily is described as a slender figure; one would envision a petite and quite young lady a true Southern bell.

Emily's relationship with Homer affects the way the town sees her. "As soon as the old people said '''Poor Emily"' the whispers began. '"Do you suppose it's really so?" (Page 1) risking your family name for the sake of love and companionship. Miss Emily's character makes a change she begins to appear very confident and boastful, wanting the respect of those around her. Many of the ladies and elders think that she is a disgrace to the town and not a very good role model for the young people. It is not appropriate for a young lady and a man to just parade around town as she and Homer are seen doing most Sunday afternoons.

As with her relationship with her father her relationship with Homer was all doomed. Miss Emily apparently feels that she has no choice but kill Homer. When she goes to the drug store to get the arsenic, she shows no concerns for other s will think. She buys the arsenic, and the rumors are flying all around the small town. '"She will kill herself''(page ), and some actually thought it would be the best thing, after all she is a disgrace to herself and her family name at this point. But then she goes out and buys a toilet set and two suits for a man, could it be they are getting married?

As a result of the failure of her relationship with Homer for the next forty years very few people could say that they had seen Miss Emily on the streets this small town. And no one had seen Homer Barron, but it is believed that he went

to where he came from back east. "And so she died. Fell ill in the house filled with dust and shadows, with only a doddering Negro man to wait on her". (Page ) In the part of the story one would become sad and weep over the death of Miss Emily. Although she was a strange lady and we believe that committee murder earlier in the story. Imagine an old lady alone all her life and no one to care for her but a servant.

Miss Emily only wants what most young ladies her age want out of life a husband and family. Not grow old alone and die alone. Her father shattered that dream before he passes, not allowing suitors to call on Miss Emily. When Homer Barron took an interest or pity on Miss Emily it was a dream come true. Someone to love her or at least in her mind she thought someone to love her, but she could let him go; he is the only one who ever showed her any kind of attention.

As discovered in the end Miss Emily is not alone that she had done the unthinkable all for the sake of love. She did murder Homer Barron only to have his body in a bed that she she sleeps. She did not go through life alone nor did she die alone, for she had Homer Barron by her side.

Globalization

Globalization has gained extreme importance these last years. Every day you hear it on the news, you read it in the papers, you hear people talking about it… still, I find that word difficult to understand because it seems to have different meanings.

At an economical level, globalization is understood as the increased movement of goods and money across national borders, which led to the rise of the global economy. International trade has become the center of attention to most of local economies around the world.

At a political level, globalization is the process of denationalization of politics and legal systems. It presents challenges to the role of governments in political affairs.

Do my essay on Globalization CHEAP !

At a business level, globalization means the decision of the companies to establish themselves in foreign markets, in order to be part of the global economy.

On the other hand, at a social and cultural level, there are many manifestations of globalization, some examples are

- Informational services such as computer-based communication, Internet, and electronic mail.

- News services that extend their information to even the most geographically remote areas of the world thanks to a satellite technology.

- Popular culture "world music", for example, has developed a larger audience.

At a global level, "the term "globalization" describes the increased mobility of goods, services, labor, technology and capital throughout the world."

There are heated debates about globalization and its positive and negative effects. As part of this human phenomena two main postures arose. The first considers globalization as a thought of by many as having the potential to make societies richer through trade and to bring knowledge and information to people around the world. However, others perceive globalization as a contribution to the exploitation of the poor by the rich.

When talking about globalization pros, it has helped reduce poverty in a large number of developing countries. Global competition and cheap imports keep a balance on prices, so inflation is less likely to spoil economic growth. In addition, an open economy develops innovation with fresh ideas from abroad. Besides, productivity grows more quickly when countries produce goods and services in which they have comparative advantages companies adapt their products or services to the final users linguistic and cultural requirements. Then, establish a virtual presence on the international marketplace throughout the Internet.

On the other side of the coin we have globalization negative effects. For instance millions of people have lost their jobs due to imports and as a consequence of cheap labor force coming from abroad; others fear losing their jobs, especially at those companies operating under competitive pressure. Workers face downsizing from employers, which often threaten to export jobs. This generates unemployed people all over the world.

Globalization, as every other phenomena has pros and cons. As it has progressed, living conditions have improved significantly in most countries. However, the strongest gains have been made by the advanced countries and only some of the developing countries. Therefore, the international community should strengthen the international financial system, through trade, to help the poorest countries integrate into the world economy, and reduce poverty. No country can afford to remain isolated from the world economy.

Love is blind

Have you ever been blinded by love? Have you ever felt that special commitment that you and your lover shared, where you would do anything for them? Love is a very complicated and extensive subject. They say love is all about patience and how willing you are to sacrifice anything and everything for that one special person. I think every challenge, obstacle, you go through in life has meaningful purpose. A lot of things happen to you that you don't understand and leave you wondering why or how after. These situations teach you some kind of a lesson and make you stronger, even if you don't realize it. It's easy to get knocked down in life, but this is the time when you have to find out what you learned about yourself and how it shaped you and taught you something that you will never forget. I learned the true meaning of the cliche "love is blind" during the summer after my graduation.

Before I moved to Florida, about three years ago, I could say that I never experienced love. I was still young and really not ready to settle down and have a monogamous relationship. I was into hanging out with the girls and just basically having fun and being a normal teenager. At the beginning of my senior year I realized all of my friends were getting boyfriends. They would tell me how it was so great and how much they loved them. What could I say? After awhile it wasnt me hanging out with girls anymore, it was them hanging out with their boyfriends. It was unexpected and I didn't really like it to much.

Things seemed to get better after graduation because that was the time

Write my Essay on LOve is blind for me

to party and have the most fun. One night during the summer I met a guy named Shane. I wasn't interested at all. I thought to myself, he is definitely not my type. He is too short and not very attractive. So basically I played hard to get. But something made me stay and continue a conversation with him. At the end of the night I ended up giving him my number. Turns out, he was the one playing hard to get. We didn't hang out until about two weeks after I had met him. When we finally did hang out it wasn't the greatest. I could tell he wasn't the dating type because all of his attention was not on me. Plus he told me straight up, " I don't want a girlfriend." Even though I knew all of this, it made me like him even more. I would wonder what he was doing when I wasn't around. What other girl he might be with. If he didn't call me, I would get upset. I thought to myself how could this guy that I have known for a couple of months make me feel this way. It was like he had all control over me. He could make me so mad, but then a day later he would sweet talk me and I would totally forget why I was mad. He was very good at manipulation and could make me believe everything that he said was true. It forced me into thinking he was always in the right.

Liking this guy, soon turned into love, or at least what I thought was love. But how could you love someone that doesn't love you back, and maybe doesn't even care about you at all. Finally, I decided I am not going to call him and try to move on. It was hard at first but I finally got used to it. The tables basically turned. He started calling me more often, and wanting to do something all of the time. There I was again, stuck in a situation where I was blind and confused.

Although sometimes were miserable, I now know how someone should and shouldn't treat you whether or not they are your boyfriend or just your friend. Looking back, I can't say that I regret any of it. When I look back at the good times we had, I still get that warm feeling and smile about it. Putting up with this guy has taught me more about relationships and myself. I now have a better understanding of what I want in a boyfriend, and what I need to be content. The cliche "love is blind" has taught me not to get caught up in believing that a couple nice words or gestures means that someone loves you. It has helped me become more in touch with myself and taught me how to really care for someone. This whole experience has shaped my life, in the only way I could've hoped my first love would.

Some people feel the strongest allegiance towards their family and are willing to do or sacrifice anything to protect them while others put their community or nation first. In Arthur Miller's fictional short play, "All my sons", Joe Keller is portrayed as a father who is desperate to keep his family together. During the war he knowingly ships out 10 cracked cylinder heads, crashing 1 P-40 planes, killing 1 soldiers. Although Joe's greatest concern is to protect and preserve his family, he ends up tearing it apart by committing crimes against his family, community, and humanity.

Joe made decisions he felt were best for his family and is a good man at heart. His life revolved around his family "I'm his father and he's my son, and if there's something bigger than that I'll put a bullet in my head" (46)! He was willing to do anything for them, even if it meant sacrificing his own life. Joe made the poor decision of sending out cracked cylinder heads with his son's well being in mind "Chris, I did it for you, it was a chance and I took it for you … when would I have another chance to make something for you" (40)? He wanted to preserve his business to give his sons something to come back to after the war. We also see that Joe has a good heart when he is constantly defending his ex-partner Steve "…just try to see it human … I know he meant no harm … it ain't murder. You mustn't feel that way about him" (84). He also offers Steve a job after he gets out of jail "While he's sitting there I want him to know that when he gets out he's got a place waitin' for him" (400). Normally if someone uses another man as a scapegoat and sends him to jail, he would want to avoid that person forever. Instead, Joe shows guilt and wants to help Steve re-establish his life.

Joe's goal is to protect and preserve his family but he does the opposite when he ships out the damaged goods. Joe lies to his son and his son's fiance, Ann, about the crime. He leads them to believe that it was Steve's, Ann's father's, decision and fault in shipping out the cracked cylinder heads. When Chris finds out the truth about his father, he is extremely devastated "I know you were no worse than most men but I thought you were better. I never saw you as a man. I saw you as my father. I can't look at you this way, I can't look at myself" (41)! Chris' says this with his voice "almost breaking", revealing his pain (SD 41). Not only did Joe disappoint Chris, he is also responsible for the death of his other son, Larry. Larry writes a letter to Ann after he reads about his father, telling her of the shame and hopelessness he felt "I can't bear to live anymore … How could he have done that … I can't face anybody … I'm going out on a mission in a few minutes. They'll probably report me missing" (41). Larry is humiliated and heartbroken by Joe's crime and takes his own life.

Even though Joe did have his familys interest at heart, it did not justify his culpable actions against the community and humanity. There was a war being fought and the whole community was involved. His sons were in the war and Joe was killing soldiers on their side "I was dying everyday and you were killing my boys … What the hell do you think I was thinking of, the Goddamn business" (40)? It was a crime against his fellow man "[The soldiers] were all my sons" (4). Joe lied to his neighbors and friends, pretending that he did nothing wrong "The day I come home, I got out of my car; --but not in front of the house … on the corner … and I walk down the street. But very slow. And with a smile" (81). He gained back the community's trust, "Fourteen months later I [was] a respected man again; bigger than ever" (8). But he didn't deserve this trust since he gained it in a dishonest way. Joe also broke apart George, Ann and Steve's family. As a result of her father's supposed crime, Ann has "never written to [her father]. Neither has [her] brother" while their father was in jail. Joe's crime against humanity was murder. Murder by definition is to kill another human dishonestly. Joe knew that the cracked cylinder heads would crash planes but he sent them out anyway "You even knew they wouldn't hold up in the air … It means you knew they'd crash" (40). There is a certain responsibility one must have of watching out for his fellow man; that "there's a universe of people outside and you're responsible to it" (4). Joe failed this responsibility.

Joe's crime was much greater than just breaking apart his family. He deceived his community and country. His actions led to the death of 1 young men, as well as his own son's. As a result of trying to maintain his family and business in an unlawful way, Joe lost and destroyed what meant most to him.

4-Stroke Engines, Thermodynamics

Background Information

Internal combustion engines are the type commonly used in cars today, where the petrol is actually ignited in the cylinder. They are known as 4 stroke, because the process occurs in two cycles (two up strokes, and two down strokes). The piston begins at the top of the cylinder, moving down. The intake valve is opened, and so a mixture of fuel and oxygen is sucked into the cylinder. When the piston reaches the bottom, the valve is closed, and the piston moves up, compressing the mixture until the piston reaches the top. When the piston is at the top, the spark plug fires, igniting the mixture, producing high downward pressure on the piston. This pressure pushes the piston down (this is where the actual work is done by the engine). When the piston reaches the bottom, the exhaust valve is opened and as the piston moves up the exhaust is pushed out. After reaching the top, the exhaust valve is closed, and the intake valve opened (bringing us back to the start).

Thermodynamics is used to describe the relationship between heat and work, and the transfer of both in and out of systems. Heat and work are both forms of energy, and thus, heating or working is a transfer of energy. A doing work on B, increases Bs internal energy, while decreasing As and so on. A system in thermodynamics is something, which has a certain amount of internal energy. A block of metal could, for example, be a metal block. Heat can be put into or taken out of it. A fixed mass of gas could also be a system. Heat can go in or out, if you compress it, you are doing work (and thus increasing the internal energy), if the gas does work then its internal energy decreases.

Write my Essay on 4-Stroke engine

If a gas is quickly compressed, then its temperature is increased. Work has been done by compressing the gas, which then converts into internal energy. If the gas is then allowed to cool, heat equal to the amount of energy supplied by the work will be released into the surroundings. The reverse happens if the gas is allowed to expand, temperature is decreased, and the system absorbs heat from the surroundings, so work is done by the system, results in a loss of internal energy, but heat will then be absorbed back in if the system is left do so. Thus, work is converted to heat (in the first case) and heat is converted to work in the second.

The second law of thermodynamics Natural systems tend to move towards a state of greater disorder, what this means is that you cant build an engine which will convert 100% of the energy put into it into work, however no engine can be 100% efficient. For example, the first law suggests that a block of wood sitting on the table could convert some of its heat energy into work and jump off the table. But the second law says it won't happen, not that it couldnt, its unlikely. You've probably got a better chance of a monkey rewriting a piece of Shakespeare, by randomly letting him type.

The zeroth law expresses that having in existence three systems, A, B, and C, if A is in equilibrium with C and B is in equilibrium with C, then A and B will also be in equilibrium. All three systems will be in equilibrium in temperature. If any of these systems are in contact with other systems, there will be compensation in the temperature level of all the systems involved. That is, they will all have the same temperature.

The Internal Combustion Engine 4-Stroke Otto Cycle

The first step of this cycle of gas and air mixed from the Carburetor. The engine pulls the piston out of the cylinder. Therefore there is a low pressure in the cylinder. Then the atmospheric pressure pushes fuel air into the cylinder, and the engine does work during this stroke. Step two is compression of the air-gas mixture. The engine pushes the piston into the cylinder creating a high pressure in the cylinder. Then in step there is the ignition and expansion of the air-gas mixture. The mixture burns to form a gas and the gas then pushes the piston out of the cylinder. As the gas expands pressure and temperature in the cylinder lowers. In the last step the exhaust is released as waste. The engine pushes the piston back into the cylinder and the pressure inside burs the gas out of the cylinder, creating waste.
