Rediscover Anoka

Rediscover Anoka formed two years ago when several Minnesota businesswomen gathered to drink coffee and share ideas. Now the group includes nineteen business people interested in promoting their historic town as a shopping destination. Located at the confluence of the Rum and Mississippi Rivers, Anoka retains its small town, historic appeal though it is part of the growing Twin Cities metropolitan area. The downtown businesses, all within easy walking distance of one another, include many antique and specialty stores, as well as a tearoom, a Victorian bed and breakfast, a bookstore, and a full-service department store. A river walk along the Rum River features interpretive plaques focused on the town's rich history, and the Anoka County History Center and Library showcases other aspects of local history.

Because of its river location, Anoka has been home to many businesses throughout its 150-year history, including industries important to Minnesota's beginnings, lumber and flour milling. When these industries faltered in the Panic of 187, local citizens rallied to bring a shoe factory and potato starch factory to town. According to a history written by the 14-144 Social Science classes at Anoka High School, business people rallied after an August 16, 1884 fire burned most of downtown and began selling their wares from shanties the following day. Many of the current businesses inhabit buildings from the period immediately following this fire.

Anoka businesses came together in 10 to solve another civic problemHalloween vandalism. In 11 youthful antics got out-of-hand. Citizens awoke on October 1 to find cows grazing on Main Street, a cow sleeping in the sheriff's office, and another devouring the globe in the local high school. To deter a repeat performance, the local businesses started a Halloween festival, now in its 8rd year. Today's celebration includes a kiddy and an evening parade. Local schoolchildren paint murals on merchants' windows, and scarecrows on lampposts add a festive touch to downtown. According to a 001 souvenir booklet, Anoka's was the first communitywide Halloween celebration in the nation.

By 18 Anoka claimed that the town was the Halloween Capitol of the World. A collection of Anoka County Union articles Mary Caine compiled gives a sense of the event's rich history. While parades and bonfires were centerpieces of early celebrations, many other activities also occurred. Businesspeople dressed in costumes, decorated store windows, and sponsored guessing contests. Throughout the 10s romance was an important feature, including dances at the armory and the 18 wedding of Emma Merkins and Louis Melberg, who wed while standing on their car at a parade attended by 10,000. Even the Great Depression didn't dampen the spirit of the event. In 1 Old Man Depression in mannequin form fueled the post-parade bonfire at Goodrich Park and comic boxing matches added to the attractions. Only the early years of World War II, 14 and 14, resulted in no Halloween festivities.

Anoka's Halloween celebrations have also marked changes in American culture. 140s celebrations reflected post-war growth with the addition of commemorative buttons, the Anoka High School Pumpkin Bowl, and decorative Halloween jackets on light poles. The 14 celebration took a serious turn when Governor Luther W. Youngdahl burned the restraints from the Anoka State Hospital in the bonfire after giving a speech comparing the restraining of the mentally ill to the burning of witches in Salem. The 150s brought big names including Rex Allen, King of the Cowboys, and Tex Ritter. In 170 a couple on The Dating Game won a trip to Anoka and flew in via helicopter for the parade.

Today the Anoka Chamber of Commerce and Rediscover Anoka have added a Christmas event to their downtown festivities. The first weekend in December Santa arrives in town via1 horse-drawn carriage. A tree lighting ceremony with Mayor Bjorn Skogquist officiating ensues at city hall. As carolers stroll the streets, Santa walks through town handing out money to lucky shoppers. Many businesses plan special events in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Both special events and its rich history make Anoka a great place to spend the day. Rather than searching for a parking spot at a bustling mall and walking through chain stores, a visitor to downtown Anoka can slip into a municipal parking lot and begin a relaxing day of shopping. Whether browsing in antique stores or looking for unique home dcor is the purpose of a visit to downtown Anoka, the visitor will find friendly stores and a small-town pace make a memorable shopping experience.

The Night the President Disappeared

It was a cold winter night, one day before Christmas Eve in Washington D.C. at the White House. The president, Henry III, his daughter Mary Ann, and his wife Susan Jones were all bundled around the fireplace. Mary Ann is a sweet, caring young lady. His wife Susan is a loving mother, understanding wife, and a caring person. Henry III is a good considerate father and one who cares for his family and country. On that night President Henry III, received a phone call, that he had to go to a conference, so his assistant Jorge said he would take him, but little did he know what he was getting into.

Susan helped the maid pack Henry's bags for the conference. Since Henry had to leave, Henry and his family sat around the Christmas tree since it was Christmas Eve. They opened their gifts together. Mary Ann gave her dad this watch that had their picture in the background. He gave her this locket and he told her no matter what happens we will be together as a family. She felt so lucky to have a father and a mother that loves her. On Christmas Day this black limo drove up to the White House to pick up the president. The driver told him that Jorge is going to meet him at the conference. As Susan and Mary Ann were waving good bye, the phone rang. It was for Mary Ann. The voice did not sound familiar. It said, "If you want your father back you will have to pay $100 million dollars." Then in the background she could hear her father telling her that he loves her and his wife. Mary Ann was so devastated, she screamed, "Father are you alright?" when she heard a click on the phone and they hung up. So Mary Ann and Susan called the police and their two best detectives, Duke and Buddy, got on the case right away. To be sure that this person was not lying, they called his cell phone and it had been disconnected. They tried to track down where the call was made from, but it was too short of a conversation. Mary Ann and Susan were so upset that they wanted to help find him, but they were told that it would be much safer to stay here. Well the next day when Mary Ann went to school she was invaded by newspaper reporters and it made her feel worse. Even her best friend could not cheer her up. When she got home the phone rang again and she answered it. It was the same voice telling her where the drop off would be. She tried to distract him so they could get where the phone call was coming from. She started asking him stupid questions, not thinking he would actually answer them. Questions like, "What is your name?" Much to her surprise the guy said, "My name is John and my friend's name is Kyle. All of a sudden she heard a voice in the back say, "You stupid idiot, why don't you just tell her we are at this warehouse and we are going to put the president in this cellar behind the club on Melrose Street. By then someone hung the phone up. Right away they got in their cars and drove to the warehouse where the call came from. It was a big dark colored building. The search crew did not find anything. So then they drove out to Melrose Street. All you heard were cats playing. Since they were hiding him in the back of a club, Mary Ann and Buddy dressed up like they were a couple going to a club. Much to their surprise it was a very nice club. People were acting all proper. So they told the police to just sit back and wait. Well as they were going farther into the club someone asked them if they are here to buy or sell drugs. So they went back there with this guy and found out that there were a lot more than they expected. There were so many dealings with illegal drugs and much more illegal stuff. They called for the police to come in and bust them. Mary Ann and Buddy kept going farther to the back. Then they found the president safe and sound. All of the illegal drug dealers were sent to jail and the president's assistant, Jorge, and his two helpers, John and Kyle, were sent to jail for life because of illegal drugs and kidnapping. Mary Ann and Susan were so happy to have Henry back home. When he got home they gave him a big hug and told him how much they missed him. Then they lived happily ever after.

Well I guess you do not know how much you miss someone until they are not there anymore or if they are kidnapped or something much different.

Ambition to Serve God through Blindness

One of the joys of living and working at the heart of a major city is being around so many bright, energetic people. These people have high expectations for themselves and others, high standards for what they can accomplish. Ambitious That's a good word for so many in our bustling society these days. But nobody will hear a great deal about ambition in church most Sundays. The richness of the imagery and symbolism which is referred to John Miltons poem about his own blindness, When I Consider How My Light is Spent, is a powerful ways to connect with the message of faith. Also, Milton gives us a picture of the importance of strong and healthy ambition, and the fear and passivity to serve God.

In the first place, the style of the poem is an Italian sonnet. The structure of the sonnet is a dialogue in the form of a question and an answer. It is divided into an octet which introduces the problematic situation and leads to the question, and into a sestet which offers a kind of answer to the problem. John Milton must have been deeply troubled by the disparity between fact and promise in his career. However, he refers to a very faint susceptibility to light still remaining to him. In the earlier part of the octet, John Milton alludes to the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 5 14-0), which performs a crucial job in the poem in that it negatively affects the way in which the reader perceives the voiced answer in the sestet. Here he has defined it as a measure of weight and hence of value; there is here, of course, a play on the word in its modern sense of his mental gift, in Milton's case his gift of poetry.

John Milton was stricken by blindness before beginning his great work, was overwhelmed by the possibility that he would fail to return his talent. In wresting with this possibility he wrote a poem on his blindness as When I Consider How My Light is Spent. John Milton was terrified that he might not invest the talents of his life well as consider "And that one Talent which is death to hide" (). Furthermore, he shows to despite the feeling that his Talent is "useless" (4), his "Soul more bent/To serve therewith my Maker, and present/My true account, lest he returning chide" (4-6). This recalls the view in the parable that God is a strict, exacting master to work for. John Milton knows, because the parable is a lesson that he should not feel this way about God, but he cannot seem to help it. He wants his writing and poetry, his body of work, as concrete proof to present to God that he has done everything he can to serve him, almost as if he does not trust that God will know and be fair to him on that Day of Judgment. In the sestet, God does not seem to need or want this true account, and in the context of line , when Milton effectively cuts off the phrase so that it is just "God doth not need" (), his wish to present this true account represents a significant crisis in the poem.

Order custom research paper on Ambition to serve God

As he began to lose his vision faith was his consolation. How he expressed that consolation still is powerfully clear. This had to have been a shattering adversity to such a powerful man. Of course the phrase, "They also serve who only stand and wait" (14), is familiar one; Milton would like us to understand how patience, the muses, or the Holy Spirit be eventually reward the faithful steward. These people serve God best by simply accepting him in faith. It seems that the answer in the sestet tries to console John Milton who can no longer do day-labor for God by suggesting that he need only "stand and wait" (14) in order to be served.

John Milton came to be a dangerous man. It was his ability to express his strong views with words that was the most threatening. However, we also learn from him to be really ambitious is to live life of such balance that all the dimensions of our lives are honored belonging to our friendships, families, and communities. No gift is too small to be revered and used in the economy of creation. The smallest gestures of a letter written, a prayer offered, a child tutored, a check written, help given a colleague, make the world flow with more grace. Moreover, all the life of our souls and our longing are for God. Please note that this sample paper on Ambition to serve God is for your review only. Social Obstacles

Music for social change is the outlook of transformation the common community. Through song lyrics, artists can convey on how they see the world. They are influencing the listeners to change the society, in a positive and constructive way, in order to better the society in which they live. Eliminating prejudices or reducing violence are common issues that are preached through songs pertaining to today's society. In the song "Changes", pac expresses the realization that the world has become an uneasy place to live. His messages need to start transforming the way we go about living life or it will take us down. "Waterfalls" by TLC also describes the life of young people who are being subjected to the streets. "Changes" and Waterfalls" have many positive points throughout the songs. Which give the idea of pursuing a better and more substantial way of life, by overcoming obstacles that stand in the way.

"Changes" shows the disadvantages of being a struggling African American in today's society. Pac goes on to express his opinion, "Im tired of bein poor & even worse Im black . . . Cops give a damn about a negro, pull the trigger kill a nigga hes a hero". The main message is that we need to start changing the way we treat each other in order to change where we can go in life as individuals and as a society. In these lyrics Pac tries to influence a positive outlook.

Write your social Obstacles research paper

"Its time for us as a people to start makin some changes.

Lets change the way we eat, lets change the way we live

and lets change the way we treat each other.

You see the old way wasnt working so its on us to do what we gotta do, to survive".

Hostility and violence just leads to death and short triumph before someone else was dead or in jail. The friction between people in the same place leads to multitudes of failure. Working together, not against each other, is the change that will bring us together in order to rid the streets of violence and introduce success. The obstacle that we need to over come here is our vindictive actions against our inhabitants.

"Waterfalls" tells about the agony of a mother who knows that her son is involved in street crime, but has no power to stop him. The boy does not seem to appreciate his mother. TLC follows up with the result of a real life situation, "So he goes out and he makes his money the best way he knows how, yet ends up being, another body laying cold in the gutter. The listeners of this particular group commonly reside in such neighborhoods as depicted in the lyrics; it can spark an emotion and make the song one that they can never forget because they can relate to it on a day to day basis. Although it seems like the easy way to move up in the neighborhood is through crime, it is not only morally wrong but also dangerous. "Waterfalls" depicts the crucial life threatening realities of the street life. The hindrance in the boy's life is his relationships on the streets, not with his mother.

Getting the boy and its listeners on the right track is a strong premise that is being promoted for the duration of the song. TLC repeats throughout the song, "Dont go chasing waterfalls Please stick to the rivers and lakes that Youre used to." In this instance of the song the obstacle is not in the hands of the boy but the mother. She is doing all that she can to get into the boys head and show him that she is there for his benefit. It's his mom that has the answers, not the streets. The message trying to be portrayed is that the boy's mother should be more influential, and involved in her sons life.

In conclusion, everyday life may hand out all kinds of obstacles, both difficult and simple. It is up to us to know and choose the right or wrong of a situation. "Changes" and "Waterfalls" give relatively the same scenario of living in terms of our surroundings and everyday life. For instance, the songs go on to describe life on the streets, living the rough life of drugs, disease, hate and killing. "Changes" and Waterfall" are music for social change because they both are turning a negative situation into a positive. The songs influence people through the truth of its lyrics. The words in the songs can be looked at as societies push to wanting to achieve a better life. Please note that this sample paper on social Obstacles is for your review only. It was a sunny day in a perfect town called Harmony. Emily lived at home with her father who was the best doctor in the world and her mother was a therapist and sometimes detective. Emily stared out at their mini-van in the drive way from their Victorian style house. She was the only child and could never understand why they had a mini-van to drive around three people. This meant that she would have to drive this on her seventeenth Birthday. She wanted something new and something she could call her own. Emily always got everything that she ever thought of wanting so she knew that with little convincing she would get her way.

Emily sat at the supper table contemplating about how to start the chat and finally after what seemed like an hour she piped up and said "I think that I should have my own car instead the mini-van to drive because I am almost seventeen years old." Her father did not even look up from his plate and said "Whatever you want, Sweetheart." Emily was shocked and excited all at the same time. She was overwhelmed.

Monday after school her father picked her up and they went around to the dealerships in search of her dream car. They first stopped at a dealership with Mazda's and Neon's. Emily's eye was caught by the pretty pink Neon at the front of the lot. They drove in and looked at all the cars and it was decided that she would not be getting a Neon, her father claimed they would not be good enough for her.

On their way they went. As they drove down the road they saw a Honda dealership. Emily thought these cars were amazing and she absolutely loved the shape of the car. She insisted that they stop here and look at all the Civics. Her and her father got out of their mini-van and started walking around all the Civics. They chose to buy a Civic that was pink on the outside with red interior. Her father's pager went off and they had to leave immediately and go to the hospital. He dropped Emily off at her perfect Victorian house and went to the ER where all the nurses wore matching scrubs and barely worked.

Emily couldn't wait to tell her mother about what car she would have. She loved it...she actually dreamt about it that night. She could not wait to get down there Tuesday after school to buy her first, new car. She got the limo to drive her from her private school where there is much drama, to the dealership to drop her off. She ran out from the limo and inside the offices where she laid eyes on her dream guy. He had to have been recently out of high school and had blonde hair with blue eyes, perfect body and a killer smile. The lights were dim in this office, Emily could have fainted when he said "Hi, I'm Eric, can I help you with anything?" Emily tried to talk but all she managed to say was "Yes, I want that car." She took him out and walked together to the car on this perfectly sunny day with a breeze not strong enough to move a hair on their heads. They got to the car and could barely even remember what they were doing in the parking lot with Honda's surrounding them.

Eric snapped out of his day dream until they both went to touch the car in the same place and their hands touched. Emily was the one to stop her daydreaming first and asked for the keys to get in and sit in her new car. She got in the car and rolled down the window so she could talk to her hot salesman. They talked about the car and personal matters and before they knew it they were driving down the road headed to Wendy's for a light snack.

Emily loved her new car and her father had already purchased it. Even though it was second hand they discussed why it was brought back to sell again. A wife purchased this car for her husband and he did not want to be seen driving around in a hot pink car so he took it back and told Eric to sell it again. There was nothing wrong with it and they got a perfect deal on a barely used car.

As for Emily and Eric, they skipped town with their car and went off to learn that they were in love in pre-school and they were destined to be together. Eric later learned that his mother was Emily's mother's cousin by marriage and the relationship ended and if that wasn't bad enough, Emily's father had an affair before he married Emily's mother and they were even closer than they were before. They split-up and she still had her car.

Comparing plays from different times and cultures

The Swaggering Soldier was written in Rome by Platutus at about 00 B.C. It is a very typical ancient Roman comedy. It has the plot of the vast majority of comedies written at that time in Rome. A young man and women wish to be married because they are in love. However obstacles are put in the way to prevent this from happening. The main obstacles they come across is the swaggering soldier, Pyrogopolynices, who kidnaps the young girl. In roman comedies it is a convention that the young couple are pretty helpless to solve their own problems without the help of a cheeky and quick-witted slave who talks to directly to the audience and ultimately ensures that the play has a happy ending. The view of marriage in Roman comedies is a very cheerful and positive one. It is not surprising that Modern English pantomimes have taken form Roman comedies; the young and helpful slave could turn up believably as Cinderella, Prince Charming and Buttons.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century playwrights tended to take much more gloomy view of the working of the human heart. Don Juan Comes Back From The War was written by Odon von Horvath in Germany in 14. This play is very pessimistic. At the end of the First World War an unnamed man returns to his town in Germany. He is known only by his nickname - the symbolic name for any unscrupulous womaniser who must have any women he sees. Which he is not at all like as he does not fall in love with the women but they fall in love with him, accusing him of compromising them and hindering him in the search of his lost true love, which he had to leave due to his position fighting in the war. When he finally tracks her down, he discovers that two years before she had gone mad and died because he had left her. He is taken to her gravestone, but because of the war he has a terminal heart condition and he dies at her gravestone. Now we see that love in this play is something destructive.

These two plays contrast each other. The first play is optimistic about the role played by marriage in society and that it is a solution to a long chain of problems. The second take the view that love is more fragile and cannot be relied on to bring happiness to people who are affected by it.

Cheap University Papers on Comparing plays from different times and cultures

In The Swaggering Soldier the main character is based on a joke that the romans always enjoyed - a character claims to be heroic and courageous fighter as well as Gods gift to women, but is unmasked as being a figure of ridicule who is a coward in a fight and a failure to the fairer sex. For the Romans war was clearly something glorious, a way in which men could prove their virility and gain admiration, especially from women. Whereas in Don Juan, the reality in war was brought home to people very harshly. There was no glory, nothing to strive for or brag about. This twentieth century play does not produce superheros of the kind that Pyropolynices wish they could be, it produces physical and emotional wrecks like Don Juan, who had lost everything through the war.

Each generation seems to create its own theatrical rules. People have a clear idea of what a play should be about and rejects any piece of theatre that breaks the rules or go against the audiences preconceived ideas. Romans did not expect their theatre to be at all Naturalistic. They accepted that the theatre was artificial and took the masks as a quick an easy way of identifying characters and explaining that characters function in the plot. However in the middle of the nineteenth century, when Don Juan was written, things changed dramatically. Naturalism came in, and although audiences were shocked at first it was clear that there were audiences that wanted to see people like themselves encountering the same kind of problems like them. Don Juan Comes Back From The War is very realistic. Hovath made very realistic and recognisable human characters, but he is very selective about which characters he puts in and leaves out, as we never see Don Juan interact with any other male characters. This makes the play seem bewilderingly real and unreal at the same time. It is as if Horvath knows what naturalism is and then quite deliberately tweaks it so the reality within his play is not quite the same as in real life. Don Juan and the women he meets are just slightly exaggerated- not like the masked clowns of ancient Rome, but still a bit disorted, so that we are a bit disturbed and can feel Don Juans nightmare just as scarily as he does it.
