To Help or Hinder

The role of a mother or parent in the life of a child is one of the most important relationships that a child will ever have. With the confusion of adolescence surrounding today's youth, teenagers are torn between following the path of their parents or breaking free and experiencing life for themselves. In Janice Mirikitani's "Suicide Note, the parents are completely involved in their child's life to the point of dominance. The daughter feels that if she doesn't life up to the parent's expectations, that life is not worth living. In William Faulkner's short story "Barn Burning" Ab Snopes, the father, is a poor sharecropper and onetime horse thief who takes out his frustrations against the post-Civil War aristocracy by burning barns. Sarty, his adolescent son, detests his father's destructiveness.

Sarty must make a choice between loyalty to his family and his own beliefs. He cannot live with his father's expectations for life and still hold his own beliefs. "More and more parents are imposing adult standards of success and achievement on children, jumping on the early-learning bandwagon and pushing their kids to excel at earlier and earlier ages." (New Internationalist) In "Barn Burning", the father is callus, dishonest, and rebellious against the country after the war. By burning barns of higher class people, he feels that he is fulfilling this rebellion. Sarty realizes, after many of his father's callous actions that he can no longer tolerate his family's way of life. "There was something about his wolflike independence and even courage when the advantage was at least neutral which impressed strangers, as if they got from his latent ravening ferocity not so much a sense of dependability as a feeling that his ferocious conviction in the rightness of his own actions would be of advantage to all whose interest lay with his." (Faulkner) Knowing that he cannot change his father's ways and beliefs, he must make a decision. He knows that the only way to escape his life is to run away and leave his family.

His father's expectation to cover for his crimes and defend his father is no longer tolerable. "You were fixing to tell them. You would have told him….You're getting to be a man. You got to learn. You got to learn to stick to your own blood or you ain't going to have any blood to stick to you." (Faulkner, p 77) When his father tells him that he must lie for him because he is family, he realizes that by lying for his father he is accepting his father's actions. By telling the truth and confessing to the actions of his father that only then can he be free. By doing this, he will be abandoned by the only family he has ever known.

In Janice Mirikitanis's poem "The Suicide Note" the child is also feeling that she cannot live up to her parents expectations of her. In this poem, it is academic pressure that she cannot endure. In her academics she has tried to please her parents by excellence in her studies but has found that this is not possible. "I apologize for disappointing you. I have worked very hard, not good enough harder, perhaps to please you."(Mirikitani) Her despair is evident throughout the whole poem because she keeps stating "not good enough, not good enough" ( Mirikitani) She realizes that the pressure for her to succeed is just too much for her.

Her parents expect excellence from their daughter and will apparently accept nothing less that excellence. "Unfortunately, in some societies, concern about disappointing one's parents is a tragedy that a student cannot deal with, so they kill themselves…Parents, therefore, have to watch out that they do not push their children above their capabilities."(Soundvision) This child feels that her grades falling below excellence has shamed and disgraced her family. Unfortunately, she feels that the expectations put on her by her parents cannot be met so she chooses death as her only means of escape.

Both children were faced with awakenings and decisions that would ultimately alter their lives. For Sarty, his awakening allowed him to break free of his father's dictatorship. This allowed him to leave his way of life and begin anew with a life that was governed by his own beliefs and emotions. Unfortunately, for the daughter in the poem "The Suicide Note" she escaped the expectations placed on her by her parents, but she will never be able to realize her own expectations for her life because she thought death was the only method of escape.

For as long as humans have been around there has been discrimination.

Discrimination happens because people are not alike in religion, skin color, gender or ethnicity, but people always say that they are glad that everyone is not exactly alike. Yet, people cannot cope with the thought of people being different. Discrimination in religion is a "hot" topic to discuss. Discrimination in religion as been around since the 1800, when England would not allow Catholic queens to be appointed to the thrown. Also, when the Catholic's did not allow protestant teaching to continue, and if one did so the consequence would be death or imprisonment. Then the reversed and Catholicism would not be allowed to be taught(the conquence would be the same for Protestants). Religious beliefs have been resolved in America by the First Amendment, but still needs to be changed in other countries. The color of a person skin used to be a extreme problem

during the 100's. Mainly if the color of a persons skin is white, that person is okay other colors would be treaty poorly if they had a different color. Discrimination mainly happened to those of black decent. Those who were black would sometimes be killed, made as slaves or beaten. Although there are still problems with people who have issues about skin color it has rapidly been less of a problem. When it came to ethnicity mostly all over ethnicities cut caucasians were harassed. People that looked Asians during the Vietam War was verblly and physically harrassed, even though they had no part in the war. When it was the Civil War, black people had no rights and were worth nothing. They were not even counted as a whole person. but as a third of a whole person. Now a days there is a discrimination towards all ethic groups whether it is Caucasians, African-American, Asian, Mexican, etc. So in a way there is equality, but still discrimination. Somehow there is less discrimination in the world, yet there is still some. Since discrimination is not a disease it cannot be cured with a shot, but only with time, or it might not ever be resolved

Women in the 1800's vs. women in 00, Let's go back in history. Now imagine you are a woman in the late 1800's. What do you think is expected of you? Well of course you should be married by the time you are sixteen or seventeen. You should probably have at least one child by now. Do not even think about having a career because you need to be at home cooking, cleaning and raising kids. Thank goodness that I did not live back then because I think I would have went crazy. In fact, if I was living in the 1800's I would have been considered a old maid by now since I am 5 and unmarried. Historically, women have been considered as inferior to men. Foe example, in Greek Mythology Pandora was the one who opened the forbidden box and brought plagues and unhappiness to mankind. Also, the early Roman law described woman, as children theologist Thomas Aquinas said that woman was "created to be man's helpmeet, but her unique role is conception… Since for other purposes men would be better assisted by other men." For a long time woman had not been given the credit that is due to them. Man men felt that women were squeamish and were unable to do work that muscular or intellectual development. Men felt that woman could only do domestic chores such as caring for children, milking the cows, and washing the clothes. Obviously these men did not consider the fact that those clothes also require physical labor. Now however, physiological test suggest that we as women have a greater tolerance to pain then that of men do. Today some men still probably feel that women are weaker than they are. Okay lets be honest most men in the back of their heads think that we are weaker than they are. The difference now is that men can not and most f the time would not want to stop us from doing physical labor anymore. Many women in today's society have jobs that require physical labor, such as construction workers, doctors, lawyers and even a policewoman. In the 1800's most women did not attend school with men. College was out of the question for women to think about back then. If a woman did get a job it was usually as a teacher or a nurse. They

would have to leave these jobs after they were married and start having children. Slowly things started to change for women. More women than ever were attending college now and getting a degree in a variety of fields. Like me, I am a political science major with a minor in philosophy. I also have associate degree in

applied science with a specialty in management and supervision. Back in the 1800's this would have been impossible for me and other females attending college. In fact, many women now live on their own either in a apartment or in their own house. Women have the option now of when to get married and to start their families. In today's socity females can work at home or away from the house. Slowly the worlds viewa of womemn id changing. Things are not completely equal between men and women. Hopefully it will be someday but for now we have a lot of freedom than that we would have back in the 1800's .

Models of Organizational Behavior

There are four major models or frameworks that organizations operate out of

Autocratic - The basis of this model is power with a managerial orientation of authority. The employees in turn are oriented towards obedience and dependence on the boss. The employee need that is met is subsistence. The performance result is minimal.

Custodial - The basis of this model is economic resources with a managerial orientation of money. The employees in turn are oriented towards security and benefits and dependence on the organization. The employee need that is met is security. The performance result is passive cooperation.

Buy models of ob term paper

Supportive - The basis of this model is leadership with a managerial orientation of support. The employees in turn are oriented towards job performance and participation. The employee need that is met is status and recognition. The performance result is awakened drives.

Collegial - The basis of this model is partnership with a managerial orientation of teamwork. The employees in turn are oriented towards responsible behavior and self-discipline. The employee need that is met is self-actualization. The performance result is moderate enthusiasm.

Although there are four separate models, almost no organization operates exclusively in one. There will usually be a predominate one, with one or more areas over-lapping in the other models.

The first model, autocratic, had its roots in the industrial revolution. The managers of this type of organization operate out of McGregors Theory X. The next three models begin to build on McGregors Theory Y. They have each evolved over a period of time and there is no one best model. The collegial model should not be thought as the last or best model, but the beginning of a new model or paradigm.

MODELS OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR

reported by Efrain G. Escarilla, Jr.

Organizations differ in the quality of the systems they develop and maintain and in the results they achieve. Varying results are substantially caused by different models of Organizational behavior. These models constitute the belief system that dominates management's thought and affects management's action in each organization.

Autocratic Model

The autocratic model depends on power. Those who are in command must have the power to demand you do thisor else, meaning that an employee who does not follow orders will be penalized.

In an autocratic environment the managerial orientation is formal, official authority. This authority is delegated by right of command over the people to whom it applies. Management believes that it knows what is best and that the employee's obligation is to follow orders. Management does the thinking; the employees obey the orders.

The psychological result for employees is dependence on their boss, whose power to hire, fire and perspire them is almost absolute.

Custodial Model

A successful custodial approach depends on economic resources. The resulting managerial orientation is toward money to pay wages and benefits. The custodial approach leads to employee dependence on the organizations. Rather than being dependent on their boss for their weekly bread, employees now depend on organizations for their security and welfare.

The custodial model is described in its extreme in order to show its emphasis on material rewards, security, and organizational dependence. Its great benefit is that it brings security and satisfaction to workers, but it does have substantial flaws. The most evident flaw is that most employees are not producing anywhere near their capacities, nor are they motivated to grow to the greater capacities of which they are capable.

Supportive Model

The supportive model depends on leadership instead of power and money. Through leadership, management provides a climate to help employees grow and accomplish in the interest of the organization the things of which they are capable. Management's orientation is to support the employee's job performance, rather than simply support employee benefit payments as in the custodial approach.

Supportive behavior is not the kind of behaviour that requires money. Rather, it is a part of management's lifestyle at work, reflected in the way that it deals with other people. The manager's role is one of helping employees solve their problems and accomplish their work.

Collegial Model

The collegial model depends on management's building a feeling of partnership with employees. The result is that employees feel needed and useful. Managers are seen as joint contributors rather than as bosses.

The managerial orientation is toward teamwork. Management is the coach that builds a better team. The employee response to this situation is responsibility. The psychological result of the collegial approach for the employee is self-discipline.

In this kind of environment employees normally feel some degree of fulfillment, worthwhile contribution, and self-actualization, even though the amount may be modest in some situations. This self-actualization will lead to moderate enthusiasm in performance.

One of the best journalistic masterpieces ever written, Black Hawk Down is Mark Bowden's account of the longest sustained firefight involving American troops since the Vietnam War. Published in 1, the book sold more than ten million copies within the first six months after its release. The book follows the exploits of around forty of the almost hundred soldiers that took part in the battle. A movie version came out in December of 000, and it also won two Academic Awards in the same year. Although the movie focuses on no more than a dozen of the characters from the book, it fully manages to capture the essence of the action, emotion and the unfolding of events during the Battle of Mogadishu. Although, in the movie the chain of events are shown from a very few perspectives, the viewers barely get sidetracked from the actual story of combat as written in the original edition of the book and the movie provides an even greater understanding of the human sacrifice involved.

The greatest strength of the movie is that it doesn't stray away from the actual story of the book. The background of the movie is also beautifully set. As I had first read the book, the imagery of the narrow alleyways, the numerous small buildings and people scrambling everywhere was pretty much definite in my imagination. The movie lived up to my expectations completely in the sense of projecting those same images on screen. The basic plot of the story is that during a mission, two choppers get shot down and the Ranger Company whose original mission was to capture two militiamen leaders, turns to guarding the fallen choppers. The movie consistently stays on the same course and maintains the same progress of the story from the book. From Sgt. Stebbins being incarcerated into the Delta Force till the last of the Rangers running to the Pakistani Stadium, the movie has perfectly rendered the book on the big screen.

The most emotional chain of events in the story movie occurs when one of the characters, Cprl. Jamie Smith bleeds to death because of an arterial wound to his leg. He sacrifices his own life braving enemy rifle fire in order to save a Ranger from his squad. In the book, he goes from a strong and alert soldier complaining that he's been shot, to finally bleeding to death because the rescue convoy does not arrive. The movie has managed to portray this scene in such a superb way that it brings tears to one's eyes just from watching. When reading the book, it's up to our own imagination to picture a wounded soldier bleeding to death. The movie actually forces the image of a person's life draining slowly from him and how he manages to make peace with death before he actually dies. Those few scenes strike a resounding thought in us that our life is so short and it's up to us to make the best of it. This is also the main point that Mark Bowden has tried to get across in the book, but the movie does a better job by appealing our vision, which is the strongest of all our senses.

Order custom research paper on Black Hawk Down: A Sypnosis

There are a few incidents in the book that cannot be shown on screen, particularly because of viewer sensitivity therefore, these scenes are skipped from the movie in their entirety. A good example of this would be when the second helicopter crashes and bodies of the flight crew are skinned and disemboweled by the Somali mob. Other than this particular scene, the movie is a ditto copy of the book, which is impressing as it is extremely hard to show such complicated series of events unfold given the narrow perspectives through which the book is embodied into a film. The director, Jerry Breuckhiemer has done a brilliant job in trying to keep the story as accurate as possible. The carnage that occurs throughout the city was also a major deciding factor in the success of the movie. The various roadblocks, infuriated crowds and the amount of lead flying everywhere was not so hard to describe in the book but to actually bring all this to the screen was a major task which was accomplished with panĂ¡che.

Black Hawk Down will remain an unforgotten movie in a lot of minds for a long time to come. The actual story itself was something that was covered up by media frenzy until the movie was released and the masses learned the truth about the Battle of Mogadishu. The movie is so realistic that people cringe from just watching the images. The storyline and the fast pace of the plot, which is common in a lot of action films, appeals the viewer's senses in every way imaginable. The degree of realism which is portrayed in the film is a lot more alluring than the book can ever achieve. This movie and book combination will remain at the top spot for a prolonged period of time because their accuracy, frankness, and the overall exceptional adaptation of paper onto screen. Is the Male Mid-life Crisis for real?

The male mid-life crisis is for real. "Crisis" means that during transition people have a breakdown in some of their normal life patterns of thinking so that they do not function at their ordinary lifestyles. For many men it seems that from forty on is all down hill. They still have thirty to thirty-five good and productive years left; yet they are asking, "Where do I go from here?" Some men go to the arms of a younger woman; others quit their job and try a new life style. The ones who hang on to their commitments are still beaten by a hurricane of fears, self doubt and frustrations.

The glories of a young man are his health and physical strength. The honor of an old man is his wisdom and experience. But what about the middle aged man? Is the benefit for his age a balding head and a beer belly? Someone once said that youth looks forward, old age looks backward and middle age looks worried. Mid-life can be a traumatic time for many people. During this time of life, many are thrown into a tailspin called a mid-life crisis. The ages a male goes through mid-life are thirty-five to fifty years.

Order custom research paper on Mid-Life Crisis in Males

One day, while talking to my dad, age forty, he stated, "Everyone's worried about the Economy this year. I'm worried about my beer belly and my hair loss, altogether I'm in depression." The day will come when you too look back at yourself and see a gut, or a receding hair line and think, "I'm not just getting older, I'm getting old." Welcome to mid-life. During his forties, if a man has been hard-working, the fruits of his labors-a home and family, material possessions will probably surround them. Then, before anything dramatic happens, small troublesome doubts may appear, perhaps followed by a series of dramatic irrational events leading up to great change. During this crisis, all men ask themselves, "Is this all there is?" or "Am I a failure?" The negative impact the aging process has on the male's body can also be a shock to his mind and emotions. Part of calming mid-life crisis is accepting in your mind what is taking place in your body. The crisis begins when you refuse to accept the fact you are aging.

Symptoms and Behaviors during a mid-life crisis can range from mild to severe. Symptoms may include boredom and exhaustion. When a male is on his own and gets a job, he is first very excited, but then things become very repetitive. He gets up, goes to work and comes back home. By the time he reaches the age of forty he will have done the same things repeatedly for two decades. Another symptom is self questioning or regrets. The male mid-lifer has had plenty of time to reflect upon the decisions he has made so far in his life. He ponders about the career choices and may feel his dissatisfaction is due to wrong decisions he has made in his life. He may think he chose the wrong career, moved to a wrong area, and even married the wrong woman. This can be very stressful on a man. All of this is probably not true but in his mind he is convinced it is.

Un-reached goals are also a very big issue. When you were a little boy you dreamed of being very rich by the age of 0. You are now 40 and have trouble paying your bills. You were going to be a star point guard for the NBA, but instead you are watching basketball every night on television. The goals one sets for himself were never accomplished. The motivation and dreams he once had for reaching those goals died as well. This failure could cause a middle-ager to panic and search for a better or new reason to live.

The good news is that mid-life does not last forever! There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Dealing with a mid-life crisis takes time and energy, but at the same time can help a man find greater satisfaction and pleasure in his life. The first thing he should do is not to panic because it will lead to bad decisions. Decisions made on an emotional roller coaster will probably be wrong ones. Geoffrey Chaucer was a narrative poet and one of the greatest English writers. The differences in society are important in understanding the actions and attitudes of Chaucer's pilgrims in The Canterbury Tales. The social structure of Europe in the 14th century was feudal. Society was organized in a hierarchical form, one's wealth and power determined the position one occupied. Each level of society had its rights and privileges, and each had its duties and obligations, as do the pilgrims Using the "General Prologue" as an example, Chaucer's skill as a teller of tales, his precision of characterization, comic tone, use of symbols, language, and metrical techniques all contribute to his unique style of writing.

The Canterbury Tales is a series of tales within a uniting framework, although it was never finished. In the "General Prologue," Chaucer uses the device of seven members of the feudal order, thirteen people associated with religious life, and fourteen townspeople telling one another stories while travelling on a pilgrimage. There is a significant difference between Chaucer's framework and other writers. The structure of visualizing the pilgrims telling one another stories is artificial. It is impossible for all thirty-four pilgrims to hear each other's stories while traveling along a narrow road.

A distinguishing feature of the "General Prologue" is its method of characterization. Each pilgrim is described in such great detail that we, as the reader, feel personally acquainted with the individual. The line, "And al was conscience and tendre

herte" (150), shows how the details are purposely used in creating a sense of intimate acquaintance with the character. The characterization's range from the Friar's sixty-two lines to the Cook's nine lines. "Not a word is wasted details of physical appearance, dress and equipment, social rank, and character evoke the whole man or woman by powerful suggestive strokes" (Wagenknecht 14).

Chaucer's idea of a pilgrimage as the occasion for the telling of a series of tales is a great device used in The Canterbury Tales. The use of the pilgrimage device allowed Chaucer's "General Prologue" to become a human comedy. The characters "contrast between what is and what men see - of themselves and of others - lies Chaucer's deepest vein of comedy" (Wagenknecht 5).

The "General Prologue" begins with details to describe the setting and serious nature of the pilgrim's journey. The season functions in a symbolic manner. Spring is a time of renewal for nature and man. The pilgrims express a desire for spiritual replenishment and rejuvenation in going on a pilgrimage to a holy place. The pilgrimage is seen as "an event in the calendar of nature, one aspect of the general springtime surge of human energy and longing" (Wagenknecht ).

The language that Chaucer wrote and spoke in his time is different from modern English. Scholars call the language of Chaucer's age, Middle English. A principal characteristic of Chaucer's style is its clarity. "Chaucer was, and remained until the appearance of Shakespeare, the most consummate master of language amongst English poets" (Kluge xxix). In terms of grammar, the ending es of nouns is pronounced with an s, not as in modern English dishes (dishez), with a z. There are also differences between Chaucer's pronouns and those used in modern English. The pronoun her(e) or hir(e) can mean either her or their. Chaucer's use of adjectives presents a dissimilarity between the absence of ending in the singular (yong) Squire and the presence of the final e in the plural (yonge) Squires. However, the final e appears in all situations in adjectives such as swete. The final e's are also to be pronounced. The past tense of weak and strong verbs used in Chaucer's English are still similarly used today. Most of Chaucer's words have survived into modern English and have not changed in meaning. However, some words have altered in meaning and must be reinterpreted.

Throughout his writings, Chaucer shows a consistency in meter, rhyme, and verse. Early in his career, Chaucer departed from the limited verse form and adopted the combination of rhyme and fixed stress patterns. He became one of the first poets to introduce the five-beat line. For the first time in English poetry, Chaucer used a five-beat, seven-line stanza, rhyming ababbcc, known as the rhyme royal, in three tales of The Canterbury Tales. Although, Chaucer mainly used a five-beat couplet, the heroic couplet, throughout the tale. Chaucer's work on the evolution of metre and the development of language remains very important. "English poetry owes its classical metre to him, and, moreover, both directly and indirectly, more than one very important strophic structure" (Kluge xxxii).

In conclusion, Chaucer's work altered the entire aspect of English poetry and produced a new attitude towards it. As a narrative poet, Chaucer achieves a lyrical effect and demonstrates familiarity with his ideas and audience. This effect allows him to display philosophical material in a comic and serious tone. Thus, Chaucer is a maker of English poetry in his telling of tales, his precision of characterization, comic tone, use of symbols, language, and metrical techniques
