A revolutionary attitude is one whereby a forcable overthrow of a government or social order (in favor of a new system) is expected to lead to politcal change. The book Animal Farm is a prime example of a revolution. A powerful authority figure takes action and changes the way the animals think and act, for a change in the hierachy.

The inspiration from the book comes from the Russian Revolution adn the idea of communism and the important authority figure is an incredibly respected pig known as Old Major. This directly reflects Lenin, in Russia. All ready, the name signifies a strong figure, major reminding people of a politcal or military movement.

Old Major encourages his fellow animals on animal farm. He establishes the base of the book byt uysing his speech, which is a mix of Marxism and Leninism. He suggest a Utopian vision of society where the cruelty and suffering of animals are a distant memory. By doing this, he presents complex poilitcal ideas in teh simplest readable form.

Old major starts his speech by mentioning that he is old. I do not think comrades, that I will be with you for many months longer, and before I die, I feel it my duty to pass on to you such wisdom that I have required. This helps the animals understand his relevance and importance. They will listen to him because he acknoledges his own weakness indicating he is not pompous. It is a speech with a higher or elevated importance and it is his last words.

Write my Essay on In the book 'Animal Farm' what makes Old Majors speech so revolutionary. for me

Old Major then begins to paint pictures and picks out respectable members of the animal farm and then recounts their unjust tales of horror. He deliberately mentions disturbing things such as dogs being drowned in old age. This helps to unfuriate his listeners, who realise how ill they have been treated. When talking about his fellow animals, he talkes with never ending descriptions

However, the descriptions are then used as a very sharp contrat to how Old Major talks about humans. He quickly isolates man as a danger. From a deep respected description of an animal to a sharp deadly point , which is clear cut about humans, teh contrast convinces animals because of the dramatic difference.

Old Major also suggests alternative lifstyles for animals who are weak and for the whole community at large. By showing the animals their eventualy fate and convincing them that ehy can change it, Old Major manages to motivate the animals convincingly and his determination is only more authentic. Almost overnight we could become rich and free.

Old Major uses words which are key suggestions towards a revolution. He uses the terms comrades, rebellion and victorious. By comibing such words with apersonal tone, Old major conveys a very emotional message. He infuses the past generations, the present generation and the future generation to create an image or legacy.

During the speech interution involving rats, gives Old Major and opportunity to approach the subject of whether rats are fit enough to be considered animals. He approaches the subject with care acting neutral and allowing his comrades to make the choice. Animals would consider this an act of self depreciaiton to further allow them to acknolege he is trustowrthy and fair.

Lastly, Old Major specifies any resmeblace to man is forbidden. He is determined to survive without the help of a human. This proves his true loyalty to his animals making him sound inspirational. No animal must live in a house or sleep in a bed, or wear clothes, or drink alchol, or smoke tobacco, or touch money or engage in trade.

Eventually, Old Major ends his speech by indicationg a dream. This makes him sound immensley important , and almost propehtic. And now comrades, I will tell you about my dream of last night. It was a dream of the earth as it will be when Man has vanished. His dream is an important, if not faschinating and motivating element for the comrades.

In conclusion, Old Major uses self depreciation and long lost ideas to help his animal communtiy. He motivates them by introducing a song, or even a chant. He makes sure that lal the animals are one and thier prime target is to seperate themselves as far as possible form humans, including thier thoughts and politcal methods of ruling a country. His speech indicates people rule themselves and ther is no authority figure. No animal must ever tyrannize over his own kind.

The Relationship of Othello and Desdemona

The relationship between Othello and Desdemona is one typical to the times. It is a relationship of power. Othello has complete and total control over Desdemona, which is why Othello becomes so enraged when he learns of Desdemona's infidelity. Othello is used to being in power and when an action was taken on behalf of Desdemona without his consultation and in his worst interest he lashed out.

As a General, Othello had command over many men, horses and townsfolk. He was the one who barked the orders and created the plans. Nothing was done without his approval and if it were, then the most extreme consequences were carried out.

Desdemona eloped with Othello because in her eyes he was the most perfect man. He was wise and noble. He was not only the physical but mental essence of a man. Othello saw Desdemona as the woman with esteemed feminine grace. They fell in love with each other based on the differences that

they perceive in one another. To Othello a woman is someone who succumbs to his every beck and call and does not resist power or his authority. Desdemona with her naïve nature is only willing to comply. Iago who cannot stand to see these two people so well in tune with each other devises a plan to ruin that relationship.

Being a General when Othello was told of Desdemona's infidelity by Iago it was treason. He treated Desdemona as one of his troops. She was his wife, he was in charge of her, how dare she betray and commit treason against him and all that he stand for. More so how dare she show such disregard for his stature and position in society?

This is why Othello could not and for that matter would not show Desdemona any sympathy or forgiveness. He had to maintain his General status and demeanor. If he allowed just one person to betray him, then mutiny would occur.

The relationship between Othello and Desdemona is quite reflective of the emphasis put on women to be their man's property from birth until death. "O heaven! How got she out? O treason of the blood" (Brabantio, I.i.185) A daughter was the fathers property until marriage. "Sweet soul, take heed, Take heed of perjury; thou art on thy

deathbed." (Othello V.ii.60) From her birth and upbringing and later to her marriage and death, her father and husband controlled Desdemona. This woman was controlled by men her entire life, and suffered the consequence of not being able to be believed.

Each of the two men controlling her life accused her of treason. She disobeyed them and gave up her respect. To Othello the General and her father the Senator, treason was the worst possible crime committable. Her father gave up all communication and rights to his daughter, and Othello killed her.

The relationships in Desdemona's life were all about control and power. Both her father and Othello dominated her every movement and those that they didn't control were acts of treason.

"My mother had a maid called Barbary,

She was in love; and he she loved proved mad

And did forsake her. She had a song of "Willow."

An old thing 'twas; but it expressed her fortune,

And she died singing it. That song tonight

Will not go from my mind. I have much to do

But to go hang my head all at one side

And sing it like poor Barbary."

Adams 4

(Desdemona, IV.iii.-4)

Desdemona tells a similar story of a maid whose love deserted her and the sad song she used to sing. At this time her naïvet nature shows when she asks if there are women who betray their husbands. Desdemona remains innocent with her only desire to comply with the men in her life.

Othello and his power are what does not save Desdemona. As he kills her he weeps, and his pain and love become more apparent as he learns the truth. His last words before his death show that true love and passion remained under the General exterior. " I kissed thee ere I killed thee. No way but this Killing myself, to die upon a kiss." (Othello, V.ii.41)

I honestly feel that Othello loved Desdemona with all his heart but bound by the laws and emotions of a General and the society which he was involved in, forced him to kill her as consequence for her actions. Their relationship was one of love and passion second to power and control. Please note that this sample paper on Relationship of Othello and Desdemona is for your review only. Last night was Steves birthday. We went to Doctor Bombays and then MOBY DICK in the Castro. I drank a lot of tequila.

Afterwards, Kenji and Marlene split, and the rest of us went back to Steves place and smoked a lot of pot and watched this Japanese gore movie called Stacy which was disturbing, funny, and profound in many ways. Not to mention very gorey. But I like a little gore.

There was also this guy there who I had grown up with, or rather grown up next to, Somebody who knew all the same people that I grew up with. It was very strange. But somewhat refreshing. I went to bed last night missing old friends and loving the friends I have now.

My housemate put up a note on my door saying that someone was coming to look at the room at 10am when I got home last night this morning, and I left him a note saying that I had gotten in v. late and if he could wake me up well before the person came so I could pick the place up or get out of there (if thats what he wanted). Not only did he not wake me up, he didnt leave a responding note. Bizzare ? Yes.

The computer lab is closing in ten minutes, I have to get a hold of people so that we can finalize plans for tonight - I think were going to a show or something.

Don't Be Afraid to Get Involved

Have you ever been a witness? Maybe you've seen something occur but didn't want to get involved. There are several reasons why people wouldn't want to "tell". Perhaps it could be because they think what they see could be a false act. For example, a joke. Or maybe, they wouldn't want to say anything because they think it wouldn't make a difference in the outcome. Also, they just don't want to get involved. They may think that if they say something, it would backfire on them and they'll be in trouble. Two stories from the book Patterns explains to us different ways to express bravery and your strength, also why it is important that if you are a witness to something you should tell someone, because it might make a difference.

In the story "Samuel," by Grace Paley, four brave young boys, Calvin, Alfred, Samuel and Tom show off by riding in between two train cars. These boys express their bravery in a carefree way, to amuse themselves as well as the others around them. Unlike these boys, In the story "Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder Didn't Call the Police," by Martin Gansberg, a young lady named Catherine Genovese shows her bravery not through amusement, but through confidence. She walks down dark alleyways by herself late at night. This shows that boys and girls, men and women are brave. You don't have to be tall and muscular, or have super heroes to prove how brave or strong you are.

Romano

Bravery is also shown in your actions, whether they are big or small, spoken or not spoken. In "Samuel" two men watch in awe as the boys jiggle around on the platform. Yet, they say nothing out loud as they reminisce about all the fun they had in their childhood. In the same way that the two men reacted, an elderly lady also refuses to say a word, as she witnesses these foolish actions. She is afraid of embarrassment and fears that the boys will laugh at her, or perhaps even the people around her. But after a few minutes she then realizes something needs to be said. She warns the boys and explains that if they continue doing what they are doing, somebody could be badly injured or even killed. But, she is not the one who ended this act; instead, a man walked over and pulled the emergency cord.

Unlike the lady who refused to speak because of embarrassment, a man from "Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder Didn't Call the Police" refused to call the police after witnessing the stabbings of Miss Genovese because he didn't want to get involved. Instead he left this responsibility to somebody else. He walked across the hall to tell an elderly lady to report what had happened. Like the story "Samuel" all but two people did nothing but watch. If only someone spoke up sooner, everything could have been O.K.

In both stories, the symbol of death is quite evident. Miss Genovese walks down a dark alleyway to get to her apartment. Although this may sound like a normal scenario, darkness reflects on the color black, which symbolizes death. Not only is it dark but she's also in a small, quiet area where she is alone. Similar to this symbol is that of the same thing in "Samuel" The four boys broadly express symbolism of death simply by their foolish actions. It is common sense that jiggling around and hitting each other while

Romano

in movement is not safe. Another symbolism of death in this story is tears. Samuel pounded Alfred on the back as he laughed so hard tears came out. Tears could be a sign of happiness or even sadness. But in this situation, tears symbolize death. People cry when mourning a loved ones death or thinking about a past death.

After reading these stories, I think it is very important to report something, if you have the smallest thought that something is not right. Even if it was false, or maybe by the time somebody could help out, it wouldn't make a difference. At least you tried. Death is not a foolish thing, when witnessing this act, you should do the right thing and get involved, tell somebody, make a difference.

Computer consulting is one of my long-term goals. Since I have been in the insurance industry for the past 10 years, I would prefer to provide my services to property & casualty(P&C) insurance carriers. I would focus on development of computer-based training (CBT) software. There is a large need for standardized training within the P&C industry. From claims adjusting to underwriting, the different positions within this industry require alot of specialized training. Several states require insurance professionals to be licensed. A requirement of maintaining the license is continuing education credits. Therefore, there is a large demand for insurance training materials. Many companies are utilizing web-based training versus classroom based training as a way of delivering information to their employees. As a consultant and developer of CBTs, I could tap into this market. In order to be competitive in this market it would be necessary for my business to have a presence on the Internet. Therefore, if I am able to realize my goal, I would develop a website as a way to not only market my services, but to allow for interaction with my customers. In order to effectively develop a website for my business, thee site will need the following components a theme and the items available on the site, means for communication with customers and the position of items on the page.

The obvious theme of my website will center around insurance. On most insurance companies advertisements include pictures of customers being serviced by insurance representatives. I think that it would be important to include similar pictures as well as graphics depicting computer-based learning as a continuous theme throughout the site. My site would include information about me professionally. I would include a link to my Ciriculum Vitae (CV) listing my credentials and certifications. I would also provide a list of references that potential customers could contact to verify my services. The site would include a link to order forms with information about all of my previously developed CBTs. Each CBT would include a brief sample of the training course, description and price. The customer would be able to order CDs of the training online. The order form would be made secure through the use of a secure hosting service. Customers would be able to save their desired purchases through use of a shopping cart. In order to market to other insurance professionals and increase my business, I would include several insurance related links on my site. These links could be informational and could be used to assist the claims professional in doing their job. Some sample links I would include would be Industry News, sample claims and underwriting forms, insurance statutory and regulatory sites, provider certification, and fee schedule look-ups. As people tend to use the Internet to search for information, it would be my expectation that my site would be referenced for research.

The next important feature on my business website is the communication interaction between myself and those accessing my website. My contact information would be made available throughout the website. Anyone would be able to send me an e-mail or contact me by phone. Customers and potential customers would be given the option to register and join my mailing list. Those who join my mailing list will receive e-mail notifications of new CBT releases, as well as updates regarding anything pertinent to insurance. These update will be sent weekly. In an effort to make my site interactive as well as informative, there would be an web page for discussion groups on the site. This discussion group will be a revolutionary concept for insurance professionals. The discussion group will allow insurance professionals to post different claim or underwriting questions or suggestions. It will also provide a means of networking.

Lastly, the position of the aforementioned items on the page is also an important component in the design of my website. The use of cascading style sheets would be necessary in order to insure consistency throughout the website. All of the links would be kept on the left of the page. Instead of using frames to separate the links, tables would be utilized to make the site a bit cleaner. Frames would be used with the external links to keep the vistors on my website. The order form will come up in a pop up window. My contact information would be available at the bottom of each page.

"After the Dinner Party" initially presents the reader with two characters, sitting in silence, after a dinner party has left them entangled in loneliness and reflection. Although the party is over, the two hostesses can still hear the laughter and philosophy that the night was so rich with. As the night grows older and the "last logs, sag and wink" (line 5), the reader is ultimately left with a better understanding of the poems theme the promise of life, the despair of death, and the fine line in between the two.

Throughout the poem there are leitmotifs and words used frequently to stress the poems general feeling of demise. After the dinner party the two hosts' "sit at the table late, each, now and then/Twirling a near-empty wine glass to watch the last red liquid climb [italics mine]"(lines 1-). The poems first two stanzas recurrently use words like late and last, words that initially give the poem a grim and hopeless feel. This feeling is used to parallel not only the time of night, but also the emptiness of old age and the inconceivable prospect of death. In this awkward post party silence, "Liquid climb(s) up the crystalline spin to the last moment when/ Centrifugality fails with nothing now said,"(Lines 4-5) because as the true weight of silence asserts itself, the reflection becomes increasingly intense for the two sitting at the empty dinner table. The slowly burning fire logs are an important reoccurring symbol used to parallel the progression of the night and of the slow and rhythmic path of death. In line five, the logs "sag and wink"(line 5), and although they are still burning, their structure becomes weak. In line 18, only "the crumble of ash is audible"(line 18), and at this point in the poem, the two subjects are slowly progressing towards the stairs. The party's excitement that was lingering in the air is slowly making its way out and only the slowly dying remains are perceptible. Line twenty-three contains black logs, and the ash that is beneath the logs "displays/No last glow" (line ). The echo of laughter has become silent, not only in the house, but in the hostesses minds. Life leaves the living with memories and as the living grow older, like the subjects of the poem, a struggle to feel the fire in this excitement can become a difficult and depressing battle.

The poem not only reflects on those slowly approaching death, it also reflects on those already dead themselves, as the hosts' "think/Of others who never again can come to partake"(lines 7-8). Unlike the hosts' in the poem who are having current feelings of despair and loneliness, there are those who never again will be able to partake in a dinner party or any other fulfilling aspect of life, but are left when they die, with the same feelings of happiness and laughter that were celebrated in this nights party. One of the guests has "quoted a killing phrase we owe/To a lost one whose grin, in eternal atrophy/Now in dark celebrates some last unworded jest none can know."(10-1). Without company or the crackle of fire, the dead are forced to celebrate the happy lives that they still remember, but can never return to. The placement of this section, emphasizing those already dead, is important because it is integrated into the poem directly after the subjects of the poem are struggling with accepting the prospect of death. Essentially their fears have been confirmed, as this section of the poem reveals the thin line between life and death and the pain that is suffered by the dead because of the impossibility to transcend that line, and return to the party that they have eternally left.

The sixth stanza of the poem produces a shift in the tone. The previous stanza's dealt with those absent because of their deaths. The following stanza's deal with absence yet again, but the more comforting absence of "children, whose bright gaze/Over-arches the future's horizon, in the midst of your prayers."(Lines 1-) This line is essential in its placement and message. It overtly confirms the poems theme that there is a thin line between life and death because the children's bright gaze is not directed in everlasting uncertainty; it overarches the futures horizons in the mist of the subjects' prayers. Although death is rapidly approaching the subjects of the poem, the brightness of childhood still glistens in their prayers that are engulfed in by the darkness of death.

Towards the end of the night, the two subjects of the poem had been through a contemplative journey that had produced a more thorough understanding of life and death. On their way up the stairs both subjects experience a "briefness of light", and "then the true weight of darkness" (Line 6). Now that these two old beings have seen "the light", darkness acquires a new meaning in which, because there is no beginning or end to fear, "neither joy nor sorrow counts"(Line 8).

"Capitalism and Gay Identity," John D'Emilio

Gays and lesbians have become increasingly accepted by society. There are many more gay communities, facilities, and organizations than ever before and the number is rising. When did gay activity evolve into a lifestyle? John D'Emilio pondered this very question when he formulated his essay, "Capitalism and Gay Identity." D'Emilio argues that the development of capitalism, and its free labor system, has allowed gays and lesbians to create a "homosexual identity" (), opposing the belief that this identity has always existed for them. D'Emilio makes his points clear and convincing, although he omits many other factors that led to this revolution. The reader can then argue that although capitalism is one of the factors delineating a gay identity, others are overlooked in D'Emilio's attempt to make a clear correlation between capitalism and gay identity.

D'Emilio makes a clear distinction between homosexual behavior and gay identity. He admits that there have always been homosexuals, but the identity he speaks of comes from a society that allows them to exist. He points out that in colonial years, society lacked the terms to even acknowledge homosexuals. They referred to this activity as "sodomy among men" () and "lewdness among women" (). In certain states, laws forced unmarried adults to live in "family units" () and they were unable to make a way of life through their attractions.

Moreover, D'Emilio goes on to say that capitalism was the cause of gay identity through the breakdown of both the family's monetary independence and its interdependence on each other. Before capitalism, families were able to support themselves by their own means. As D'Emilio puts it "…husbands, wives, and children worked together to produce the goods they consumed"(8). They could rely on themselves to be self-sufficient so long as they had a family. In this way, sex was a means of procreating.

With technological advances and free labor, individuals were forced out of their current lifestyles, and into the work force. People were therefore more able to make same sex relationships with people in the workplace, encouraging gay activity to progress into an everyday life, rather than an unspoken activity. Family units were no longer necessary for survival, and people had the option of being single for the first time. Slowly but surely, the role of sex in people's lives began to change. Relationships turned away from the need to procreate and "became a means of establishing intimacy, promoting happiness, and experiencing pleasure" (). Although it had always been a pleasurable experience, the main concern was having children. This was no longer the case. People could have sex for only the enjoyment they obtained. In this way, people were encouraged to find mates who enjoyed the same things as them. D'Emilio reasons that this supported those who were gay to express it, and gave them an outlet to form a life in society. It gradually became more acceptable to have a mate of the same sex.

However, D'Emilio's insinuation that capitalism was the only cause of the breakdown of family life, and his presumption that this breakdown was the sole reason for homosexual existence in society is inaccurate. He makes many claims that seem absurd to the reader. For example, he claims that "college educated white women…could survive more easily without intimate relationships with men" (1). He gives no recognition to any other factors that may have been involved. Just because these women may be more able to support themselves, they become lesbians? Why does D'Emilio single out white women? In another example, D'Emilio claims World War II "freed men and women from the setting where heterosexuality was normally imposed" (1). How can a war account for all gays and lesbians coming out? This seems to be a flimsy argument at best.

As one can easily see, capitalism did influence the societal changes that account for today's gay identity, but it was not the only factor in this transformation. Progression from all aspects of life is the true motivator of social change. As D'Emilio says, gay identity is "a product of history"(7), but no one segment can fully explain its formation or its solidity. Gays and lesbians can now coexist with society, and find their role in it, based on this newfound identity. Please note that this sample paper on Capitalism and Gay Identity is for your review only.
