In stolen all of the characters suffer in different ways and from difference experiences, and although those experiences differ they all share the loss of their families and being institutionalized. Individual characters go thru different experiences although Jimmy and Ruby go through the toughest. Outcomes for the characters range in degree of suffering from both physical and mental abuse, and the degree of damage is shown is the long term.

Ruby is clearly the most damaged, she he abused both mentally and physically and isn't sure of who she is, Ruby suffers by being institutionalized at an early age, she is sent to white homes and although the other children think she is lucky when she receives little gifts, when they play the clapping game and she "promised not to tell" it's the harsh reality of what really goes on, Ruby also has her doll, named Ruby to reflect what Ruby has missed out on as a child, "what are we going to do today Ruby, go to the lolly shop?" Later in life she is named 'crazy' and put in a home, although this is in her best interests the damage is done, people abuse her all through her life, when she is a child, and more harshly when she becomes a slave for a white family, "and the other boot, scrub them bitch!". Ruby's family come to visit her in the "crazy home", it is obvious the extent of the damage when she doesn't realize they are there to see her, "don't want no trouble… what happened to me?"

Jimmy was happy as a child, naughty, always having fun, even when taken from his family he still in high spirits when he could be. When he grows older he because a shamed boy and realizes what has been hidden his whole life. "She's not dead, she's not" the wardens at the institute hide the truth from jimmy slowly making him more depressed, he suffers by the harsh lies, jimmy is always suffering, he's not as smart as the other children and the suffering is contributed to when he offers him self to be taken to a white home, "I make my bed real good" and then it is clear when he comes home that he has been abused, "I promised not to tell", the chance to meet his mother does come, it then comes upon him the amount of times he had been betrayed by white people not telling him the truth, "what do you do when you are gunna meet your mother for the first time in twenty-six years?" he really is sure he will meet her, he runs thru what he will say in his mind, dreams about it, live for it, and that's just it, he's suffered so long an lives to meet her. When is cant meet her it becomes to much and he gives in, jimmy hangs himself from the roof.

Sandy knew his mother, he remembered his mother, he knew why he was in the home and he knew what was happening, Sandy was suffering from knowing to much, although the other children knew nothing, Sandy had knowledge. He was always running from the authorities, and he was "always on the run". Sandy was the child who still knew his language, he still remembered the stories, he tried to let the culture live in although it was all forbidden in the home, he suffered by not being able to go "walkabout" or not be allowed to express himself with native stories.

Help with essay on Stolen (play and Novel)Jimmy and Ruby are the most obvious victims in stolen but all suffer in their different ways.

Anne had the best materialistically, she was spoilt, had everything she could of dreamed of, a loving set of adoptive parents that treated her as their own, but they treated her like that too much. Anne is told she's aboriginal, "princess we need to tell you something…." The way she is treated is as a "princess", but Anne still suffers through what is unspoken. "Anne, there's something else we need to tell you… she's an aboriginal". "Why haven't you told me that she's---?" "Aboriginal?" "Alive an wants to see me?" it is clear that maybe her parent didn't have her best intentions at heart and that if life had always been like that than she may have suffered more than meets the eye. "Life is full of sticky situations, to tan or not to tan… I don't have to I'm black" the effect of not always knowing she is aboriginal is clear as It is hard for to come to turns with it during everyday things- such as tanning.

Shirley is the character of stolen who gets the happy ending, she may have been through a lot to get where she is but she gets to live with the satisfaction of knowing she has a daughter and granddaughter. She would have been through the toughest times when her daughter got stolen, but the happiness of finding her and realizing she had a granddaughter would be a far better thing than she ever could of dreamed of.

It is clear that although all children are in the same environment and under the same consequences, the way each was brought up is very diverse and so is the way each suffered, no character suffered for exactly the same reason although each is based on the same reason. The damage the characters suffered ranged greatly and no characters could have understood the pain.

Prejudice was once described by Senator George Aiken when he said, "If we were to wake up some morning and find that everyone was the same race, creed and colour we would find some other cause for prejudice by noon." This quotation could not be more correct. People around the world will have prejudiced views even if there is not anything to discriminate against. This quotation also shows the ignorance and the stupidity that people demonstrate towards variety and diversity. When there are people who hate there is prejudice. Not only do prejudiced outlooks destroy people, they also cause many of conflicts between people, communities and countries. These small conflicts can then inflate and become worldwide issues that influence everybody. There are a great deal of prejudiced feelings in the novel The Chrysalids, and in the film The Power of One. In these works prejudice is a predominate issue and it creates many vital conflicts. After reviewing these works it is easy to see how bigotry leads to pain, sacrifice and hate. Prejudice in The Chrysalids and in The Power of One can be compared in terms of causes, effects and ultimate consequences.

Next, prejudice in The Chrysalids and in The Power of One can be compared in terms of effects. One effect of prejudice that occurs in The Chrysalids is defiance. It is obvious that defiance occurs quite frequently in The Chrysalids. One of the first incidences of defiance was when David did not turn in Sophie for her blasphemy. The inspector told David that "concealment of a blasphemy - not reporting a human deviation is a very serious thing" which shows us that disregarding the laws in Waknuk is unacceptable (51). Defiance occurred often in The Chrysalids because the laws in Waknuk were very difficult to abide by and many people disagreed with them. Consequently, because people disagreed with the laws they were more likely to break them. Similarly, defiance is also an effect of prejudice in The Power of One. An example of defiance in this film could be seen when PK began to teach the black people. During the time period that this movie took place black people were not allowed to learn how to read and write. PK along with a few other white people disagreed with the law. They felt that the only way that black people were ever going to be able to pass knowledge on to one another would be if white people taught them. As a result, PK set up an illegal program in which he would teach the black people how to read and write. This showed how unreasonable laws cause people to break them. PK disagreed with the law that was set so he broke it. Therefore, defiance of the government occurs when one has a strong opinion against the laws set. Another effect of prejudice in The Chrysalids is conflict. The people of Waknuk were prejudice towards anything that deviates from the true image. This causes many conflicts for David and the other telepaths. For example when David was having a conversation with his Uncle Axel about Anne his uncle says, "It is too dangerous Davie. Remorse, abnegation, self sacrifice, the desire for purification all pressuring upon her"(5). This quotation showed the struggle that David and the other telepaths were having with the fact that Anne wished to marry someone who is not a telepath. This meant that Anne would most likely tell her husband that she and the others are telepaths and then they would all be discovered. This conflict took place because of the prejudiced feelings that were directed towards anything that was different. If the people in Waknuk were not prejudiced, then David would not have been having such a problem with Anne marrying a norm. Likewise, conflict is also an effect of prejudice in The Power of One. An example of this was the fighting between PK and the boys at school. PK was the only English boy at his school full of Dutch students. When the war started, the English were fighting against Hitler. Unfortunately, the Dutch were in favour of Hitler. Therefore, because PK was English the Dutch boys picked on him. This example shows how prejudiced feelings cause conflict between people. If the boys were not prejudiced towards the English then PK would not have been harassed. An additional effect of prejudice in The Chrysalids would be dehumanization. Sophie depicted the dehumanization that transpired in The Chrysalids "You can't understand the awful emptiness that's waiting all around us here"(167). This quotation describes the Fringes, which was the place that people who were different were sent to. It proves how prejudice causes dehumanization through unfair treatment and abuse. In a similar manner, dehumanization is also an effect of prejudice in The Power of One. An example of the dehumanization that occurred in The Power of One would be when the black people were sent to camps, beaten and used as slaves. All of these acts demoralize people. They make them feel as if they are worthless and they separate them from the ordinary people. These acts are carried out because of prejudiced feelings towards the black people. In conclusion, prejudice in The Chrysalids and in The Power of One can be compared in terms of effects. Order custom research paper on Comparison between The Power of One and the Crysalids

The Great Gatsby and the Jazz Age

Published in 15, The Great Gatsby is the definitive American novel of the Jazz Age, the prosperous years following the First World War. After two successful novels and dozens of popular short stories, Fitzgerald set out to write something "new," "extraordinary," "beautiful," and "simple." Few readers of The Great Gatsby would dispute that he achieved his goals. Gatsby was an achievement that placed Fitzgerald forever in the canon of American literature.

GatsbyStill a Sexy Story

While The Great Gatsby is representative of a particular time, which seems long ago, it is by no means an "historical novel". The book maintains the timeless elements of a great storyglamour, money, romance, and murder. Its characters are attractive, its setting romantic, and its plot thoroughly engaging.

Write your THe great gatsby research paper

The Great Gatsby recounts one man's effort to win the heart of his long lost love. Along the way we go from intimate luncheon to rollicking all night party, from the ash-gray valley of the working class to the glittering heights of the extremely rich. We meet a fascinating cast of characters and we hold our breath as the story reaches its inevitable, tragic climax.

The American Dream, Class Conflict and Disillusionment

Like all great literature, The Great Gatsby works on many levels. On the surface it reads as a tragic love story of the Jazz Age. But between the plot points, the book speaks to many important themes in American life including idealism, aspiration, and disillusionment with the American dream.

Jay Gatsby, the novel's protagonist, is often seen as an archetype of the American dreamer Self-made man sets out to achieve ambitious, seemingly impossible goals. Gatsby believes unconditionally in his dream and he pursues it with the energy, the enthusiasm, and the unabashed idealism that mirror those of the young nation. Through hard work and dedication, Gatsby has accumulated riches and status. But like America, the foundation of his wealth is not beyond reproach.

The book is also a study in class conflict. Fitzgerald carefully selects characters that represent different elements in society. We have old money in the form of Tom and Daisy Buchanan, the nouveau riche are embodied in Gatsby, Myrtle Wilson and her husband George symbolize the aspiring lower middle class and the working poor respectively. The drama of the story can be scene as a microcosm of American life.

On another level, Fitzgerald addresses the more philosophical and disconcerting realization that our dreams are often illusions, founded on romantic ideals easily crushed by harsh reality.

First Person Narrator

Fitzgerald employed a limited, first person point of view to tell his story. The narrator's detached position gives him the chance to retell as well as comment on the characters and events. A mid-westerner in New York, Nick Carraway stands outside the society he observes. We witness the romantic affairs that form the core of the novel from a presumed impartial view.

Lyrical Prose Style

There is no doubt about Fitzgerald's gift for language his prose is polished and poetic. Nowhere is Fitzgerald's dedication to his craft and the evidence of his continuous re-writing more apparent. Here's one example of his lyrical prose style

…and orchestras which set the rhythm of the year, summing up the sadness and suggestiveness of life in new tunes. All night the saxophones wailed the hopeless comment of the Beale Street Blues while a hundred pairs of golden and silver slippers shuffled in the shining dust.

The Novel's Place in History

While Fitzgerald was disappointed in the sales of the bookhe expected to make much more money than he didhe was pleased with his work and its critical reception. Eventually he sold the film and theatrical rights. The true brilliance of this book was not fully recognized until after Fitzgerald's death in 140. It has since become one of the most analyzed works of American literature and continues to be a favorite among English teachers and students. A popular film version of the book was made in 174 starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.|An introduction to The Great Gatsby including the style, major themes, and overview.

The ideal of the American Dream is based on the fantasy that an individual can achieve success regardless of family history, race, or religion simply by working hard enough. Frequently, "success" is equated with the fortune that the independent, self reliant individual can win. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald examines and critiques Jay Gatsby's particular vision of the 10s American Dream. Though Fitzgerald himself is associated with the excesses of the "Roaring Twenties," he is also an astute social critic whose novel does more to detail society's failure to fulfill its potential than it does to glamorize the "Jazz Age."

As a self-proclaimed "tale of the West," the novel explores questions about...

The Great Gatsby, the first truly Modernist novel to find success in the United States, set the tone for the movement that defined American literature well into the present day. In Modernism, Fitzgerald found a way to define his world that would have been impossible in the Nineteenth-century Victorian style that still dominated American writing. In his style, portrayal of American morality and treatment of his characters, Fitzgerald left the Victorian era behind, creating a Modernist masterwork that still serves as a model for American fiction.

The gritty realism of William James and his contemporaries, and even the light-hearted tone of Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, was too limited to allow Fitzgerald... American History II Lynne Spence

Houdini,Tarzan, and the Perfect Man

Introduction

Buy custom Houdini, Tarzan, and the Perfect Man term paper

John F. Kasson became interested in writing this book once he researched his great-grandfather Albert G. Matthews past. His knowledge of President Roosevelt also assisted in his interest to explore manliness in the past. He was interested in Houdini, Burrough, and Sandows representations of popular asthetics and cultural patterns of the male body and physical beauty.

Neurasthenia, an American disease of nervous weakness and fatigue threatened men in the late 1th-0th century. Excessive brainwork, intense competition, rapid communication, hurrying, and the ubiquitous rhythm and din of technology were all medical problems that arose.

Kasson focuses on the development of newspapers, magazines, and photography because they were all crucial in maintaining and subverting gender categories. They introduced people to advertising , transformed popular theater and sport and changed individuals apprehension of the world and themselves.

Chapter 1

1. Dixie who was normally seen as a well built young gentleman was compared to the

perfect man. Dixie was a beautiful classical statue that came to life and Sandow was

the sculptor and masterpiece, the two played dual roles.

. Sandows body symbolized attraction and a challenge, a model of strength, and object

of desire, inspiration, and a rebuke of seduction.

Sandows nude body was of high interest to both men and women. During that time

period heterosexuality and homosexuality were not focused on as much as today. At

the time men could look at other men nude with no hesitation.

Sandow was a performer by developing his physique with professional weight

training. He honed his abilities as a showman and known as the stongest man on

earth.

Sandow and Sullivan were both very strong and fit men, however, Sandow defeated

Sullivan with better arm strength, a bigger neck, chest, and thighs, yet a smaller waist.

Sandows body was a sign of racial purity, he represented a male physical idea and a

white European male ideal. His color became a racial heirarchy when he traveled to perform, especially to India.

Sandow asked and allowed his female admirers to touch and feel his body, he wanted

them to see his muscles for themselves and convinced them it was ok. He knew his power of his body was intimidating and was a sexual gesture.

Tuner and Sandow were both well known and respected in their line of work,

Sandow in body building and Turner was a historian. Turner compared Sandows

American manhood to his idea of frontier of American History, which was the

meeting point between savergy and civilization.

Chapter

Houdini was born as Ehrich Weiss, he became a magician as a result of his family

Background. His desire for success came from his fathers failure in his eyes and his ambitions were kindled by his mothers support and embrace.

Houdini and Eltinge were parallel in their characteristics as far as doing their

speciality was concerned. Both performed a magical metamorphosis while working. Houdinis trait was speed emphasis and Eltinges was effort and the amount of time it took to change from a robust he-man to a feminine beauty.

I like the Prison Defier trick best. It impressed me because he out smarted both the

Washington D.C. and Boston police officers, prison superintendents, reporters, etc. I also liked it because he performed these tricks naked within in a matter of minutes, and he switched and scrambled prisoners in different cells.

His naked body became a spectacular dramatic effect, he made it important and

crucial to his success and the soul of his challenge. He let it become part of his act for his admirers to study, a symbol, a source of meaning, and mystery. He left his

audience wondering what was next.

Kasson said these magic acts were culturally important because of the fact he was

naked he stirred up questions and curiosity concerning the human (especially male)

body, also he defined gender roles and alleviated anxiety over masculinity threats. They matter to people because he gave them the confidence to believe in themselves and to challenge themselves as he did. These acts also allowed Houdini to be himself and to allow his body to become an object to be searched and were a gesture of disclosure. The spectators were very interested and impressed with these acts and they kept them wanting to come back to see more.

Houdini reacts against modern society by not allowing society to bring him down

physically or emotionally despite the tension that accompanied his challenges concerning the outcomes of his escape tricks. He reacted against women by trying to defy their feminine magic and spiritualism. His biggest challenge was Margery. He wanted to prove she was a false performer and could not compare to him.

Chapter

The writing of Tarzan allowed Edgar Rice Burroughs self-liberation to take place in

his life, he also became one of the most widely read writers of his day.

Kassons point of discussing wild boys and wild men was to allow his readers to

see that they were the basis and inspiration for his idea of Tarzan.

Each character undergoes a metamorphosis of literal physical change, emotional,

mental, and spiritual change. Observers could relate to these changes and appreciate them.

I most identify to Burroughs. I feel like I have acquired some of the same mental and

spiritual ideas as he. I enjoyed reading about him more so than Sandow and Houdini. Burroughs possessed similar views on men and women and myself.

Please note that this sample paper on Houdini, Tarzan, and the Perfect Man is for your review only. The average Los Angeles area commuter wastes 0 hours a year stalled in traffic -- by far the highest gridlock toll in the nation, according to statistics compiled for the first time in an annual report released Tuesday.

The area topped the nation in traffic congestion for the 16th straight year, followed by San Francisco, where rush-hour drivers lost 68 hours in traffic delays, and Chicago, where commuters lost 61 hours. The new figure for lost time is based on a calculation that it takes the average Los Angeles rush-hour commuter 76 percent longer than it should to complete a trip.

But there was a bright spot for L.A. commuters, according to researchers at the Texas Transportation Institute who compiled the 00 Urban Mobility Study.

Do my essay on How to win CHEAP !

L.A. traffic could have been worse if not for new car-pool lanes, public transit and small-scale freeway fixes that have kept even more severe traffic congestion at bay despite the increase in cars on the road.

To have the additional travel without impacting the individual motorist, there must be something good happening, said study co-author David Schrank.

Maybe the nips and tucks are helping. Thats one of our messages If you didnt have any of those -- the HOVs, the public transit -- it would be a lot worse.

Still, the Los Angeles area ranked worst in the nation in time and money wasted on being trapped in traffic, as it has every year since the Texas A&M University-based institute started conducting the study.

Congestion costs every Los Angeles area resident $1,005 per year in wasted time and gas, and every man, woman and child loses 5 hours annually due to gridlock. San Francisco follows with 4 lost hours per person a year, Denver with 6 and the Miami area with hours of congestion delay.

Were No. 1 now, and were looking to keep that title for a long time, said Stephen Finnegan, the Automobile Club of Southern Californias transportation policy specialist. I think thats an important message, as well as the whole message of the report Were not doing enough in transportation.

The annual report is a comprehensive look at traffic across 75 cities nationwide, measuring the time drivers waste due to congestion delays, as well as the financial costs of lost productivity and wasted fuel. The rankings are compiled from 001 statistics.

Los Angeles area residents -- men, women and children -- actually saw a dip to 5 hours of delay in 001 from 55 hours in 000 -- a decrease researchers and others believe is related to the economic downturn and shouldnt be given too much weight. Los Angeles still has seen wasted time nearly triple what it was in 18, when the report found 1 hours a year in delays.

Overall, residents in the Los Angeles area spend 667 million hours a year in congestion, costing $1.8 billion, compared with those in the No. region -- New York-New Jersey -- with 41 million hours spent in traffic at a cost of $8.4 billion.

The nation as a whole wastes $6.5 billion a year on congestion -- $4.5 billion more than the previous year.

This year, the report for the first time measures the impact of improvements under way, and the authors say such investments can go a long way to helping ease gridlock.

Los Angeles saved 15 million hours thanks to public transit and car pools, and 8 million hours with freeway fixes like ramp metering, freeway patrols and traffic signal coordination.

State Department of Transportation Director Jeff Morales points to the new southbound San Diego Freeway car-pool lane as the kind of improvement completed under Gov. Gray Davis transportation program that can help.

You look at the 101, the 710, the 405, the 10, the 60 -- weve got different types of work under way on each of those, Morales said.

No one should say that the problem is gone. What were saying is, by being strategic, by looking at this from different perspectives, we can make a difference, he said.

We are in fact at the forefront of national efforts to do things like that. By (the reports) numbers, L.A. area drivers were spared 150 million hours of delay because of the number of things that are being done.

But the states transportation funds routinely have been raided in recent years to shore up the state budget, leaving highway projects competing for scarce cash.

The Auto Clubs public policy manager, Dan Beal, said those in political leadership need to make transportation a priority.

I think what we havent seen is the state, and in some cases regional entities, making sustained efforts over the years. We have a huge population growth... . We absolutely need to keep the focus on our transportation challenges and bring everything to the table.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman Zev Yaroslavsky said L.A.s transportation problems need a multifaceted solution and the full attention of public leaders.

We need a Manhattan Project-type of intensity and urgency to the transportation system, said Yaroslavsky, also a county supervisor.

I think people need to recognize its going to take time. The public officials that are responsible for public transportation need to behave as if we have no time.

In Washington, lawmakers called the statistics startling and sobering, and said the solution was a 5-cent increase in the federal gasoline tax.

Highway congestion is one reason why the name of the Lord is used more often in traffic than in church, said Rep. James Oberstar, D-Minn., the leading Democrat on the House Transportation Committee.

The Bush administration and House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, have long opposed any gas hike, but Oberstar on Tuesday argued that taxpayers would be willing to support it.

Similarly, a bill on Davis desk would allow the MTA to put a third, half-cent sales tax before voters, possibly next year, to fund bus, rail and freeway improvements for up to six years.
