I have read "The Eagle of The Ninth" by Rosemary Sutcliff .Roman history has always had a particular appeal to me , especially the mysteries of its era . When I discovered that it was about a lost Roman Army - The Ninth Legion , i was pleasantly surprised not only from the historical point of view , but the fact that the story would not be set in some unfamiliar , far off foreign country but in Northern England and Scotland . Some parts of the novel are in lands only a stone's throw away from our school .

The main character in this novel is a quite young and in-experienced soldier named Marcus Aquila . He is the son of a high ranking Roman soldier , who was second in command of the Ninth Legion .

Throughout the novel , Marcus has shown that he has a very ambitious and determined . He seems to have his entire life , from the next day till his retirement all planned out .

" ... one day , when he had finished with the Eagles when he had made an honourable name and become prefect of his Egyptian Legion , he would go home to the Etruscan hills , and perhaps buy back the old farm ... to retire to ."

However , even though all of this ambition does appear to be a healthy attitude , it often leaves him rather disappointed when he cannot progress or improve himself any further. This happened after a serious injury after which he was no longer able to be a soldier . This left him very depressed . Marcus achieved the rank of Second Cohort , which left him in charge of a fort on a northern frontier near Carlisle . Unfortunately , not long after he arrived it was attacked by the native tribes . He was very badly injured in the attack , and was unable to walk for weeks .

" Marcus lay in his bed for hours on end , staring at the ceiling and listening to the wind blowing through the window , but the pain in his leg was drowned out for the anguish of his lost career was too great ."

In this way the author compels you to pity Marcus , in one night , in a split -second , he had lost all that had been dear to him .However , Marcus had not lost all of his ambitions and dreams , his prime motivation was to find the eagle of his father's lost legion , and despite this huge set back , he is still determined to go north of Hadrian's Wall to retrieve it and restore the Ninth Legion . In a sense that takes a lot of bravery to do that , considering an entire legion was lost going north , and he is only bringing his slave along with him . He has already shown his bravery in the way he conducted himself on the battlefield , in more ways than one . The best example of his bravery in the novel is when him and Esca are confronted by the tribe members who , at that time , knew they had stolen the eagle . Marcus wittingly manages to dissuade them by lying point blankly to their faces . Fortunately for him and his companion Esca , his lies worked , and soon the tribe members were no longer pursuing them .

"We do not have your worthless idol , but if you are so sure we have stolen the Red Crests' god , you have but to search our gear , and you will surely find it . Search , then ."

Another aspect of Marcus' character is his compassion , and the way he can begin to trust a person quickly and with ease . This appears to happen on more than one occasion , but in a couple . At the beginning of the novel , when he is in command of the fort , he befriends a local tribesman , Cradoc , and goes hunting regularly with him . However , during the night of the attack , Marcus sees the hunter and is obviously very disappointed in him for betraying his trust .

"Marcus looked up , and met the cold , grey eyes of Cradoc and suddenly ceased to move.......his eyes pin-pricked in shock ."

Marcus display again , that he is a character who can be very easily befriended . During his recovery time , he meets a girl called Cottia . The girl hates Roman rule in Britain , and she hates the constrictions that Roman rule brings upon her people . Marcus' very roots are in these principals that she hates , and yet they form such a good friendship .

"'Can i come and see you again Marcus?'

'Of course you can .' "

However the most profound example of Marcus' friendly character is found when Marcus employs a slave who lost an arena game . Marcus , saved the slave's , Esca's , life , although Roman tradition would have him killed for it . After a few days together , they both find each other compatible , and make good friends . Esca is always there to help Marcus with the healing of his leg , and to offer very helpful advice . A very shocking and surprising moment comes in the novel when Marcus states to Esca that when they return from Scotland with the eagle , he would grant Esca his freedom . By anyone's standards , this is a very compassionate thing to do .

"After we return home with the eagle , i shall grant you your freedom , Esca ."

The overall impression of Marcus' character is a honourable one . From the beginning of the book , he can come across as being rather arrogant , and doing only what is in his best interests , personally , i even thought he was a selfish person . However when you progress further into the novel , you discover that this is not the case. You discover that he is a caring , deep and passionate person . His crusade for his father's eagle and to find out what happened to the Ninth defines Marcus as someone with unbelievable sense and courage .Please note that this sample paper on Eagle of The Ninth is for your review only. 001 A Space Odyssey, by acclaimed science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, is a tale of human evolution as guided by a higher intelligence, making it a landmark in literary achievement. Rather than focusing on an isolated moment in history, 001 spans the entire course of mankind's development, from the most primitive cavemen to the final stages of evolution, with each period of evolution being represented by a different character or set of characters. These tiers of human achievement are interconnected by the presence of a mysterious stone structure known as "the monolith," which heralds in each new level of existence for the human race. The themes that Clarke addresses in this book include the evolution of mankind, the conflict of human evolution as opposed to the evolution of technology, and the role of a higher intelligence in human development.

The first theme, which forms the foundation of the 001 story, is the gradual evolution of the human race. In the first part of the novel, mankind is represented by the savage "man-apes," who fit the traditional caveman archetype. These creatures are barely above the intellectual level of animals, until the appearance of an extraterrestrial monolith inspires one of them to hunt using stones, thus beginning the use of tools for the human race and possibly saving the race from starvation. When next we see the human race, science and technology have made amazing strides, and the time period is sometime in a fictional twentieth century. Just as the caveman known as Moon-Watcher represented the man-apes, Dr. Floyd becomes the center of attention during this tier in human evolution. Floyd is called on a mysterious mission to the Clavius moon base, where it is revealed that a monolith much like the one discovered by the ape men has been unearthed. The discovery of this monolith marks an important step in human development in both a literal and figurative sense. While the first monolith was seen on Earth, this second monolith delineates mankind's ability to extend its reach beyond the earth and into outer space, thus marking a significant new level of human achievement. Finally, astronaut David Bowman represents the last evolutionary stage, as he embarks on a mission to one of Saturn's moons which was indicated by a signal from the moon-based monolith. After a series of events involving the malfunctioning of Hal, the ship's computer, Bowman arrives on the Saturn moon and unlocks the secret of the monoliths, at which time he leaves the physical body and becomes a spiritual creature who exists beyond the time-space continuum.

Bowman's story proves more than what man is meant to become, however - he proves that true intellectual and spiritual evolution can only be granted to a living being, and can not be achieved by a machine. Hal, the computerized entity in charge of running the ship that conveys Bowman and his crew to Saturn, stands in antithesis to the idea of evolution by being an artificial being, incapable of becoming the spiritual being that Bowman ultimately is transformed into. Seemingly angered by its lack of humanity, Hal malfunctions and murders Bowman's crewmate, Frank Poole, forcing Bowman to confront the more-advanced - but more limited - supercomputer. The theme that Clarke seems to be exploring in these scenes is the fact that although a technological creation can be highly advanced, it must remain acquiescent to the higher intelligence of humanity, or else it will become a danger. In a way, this puts the human evolution so thoroughly praised in the book back into perspective, reminding the reader that for every "great" organism there is an even greater one, to which the lesser must remain subservient.

Mirroring the relationship of man to technology, but on a much larger scale, the theme of higher intelligence whispers between the lines of every page of 001. Although the story that unfolds in 001 is more scientific than religious, it is clear from the threefold intervention of the monolith that some form of a supreme being or supreme beings is present. From the text of the story, it seems that the monolith appears at the most opportune times, ruling out the possibility of mere coincidence and implying that some form of intelligent life planted the monoliths for a very specific purpose. That purpose evidently is the furthering of human evolution, the transcending from one level of consciousness to the next. At the conclusion of David Bowman's journey, these implications are confirmed when it is revealed that monoliths were strategically placed throughout the universe for the beings of various planets to discover. This theme is a successful literary bridging of secular evolutionary theory with religious ideology, making the book appealing to both sides of the evolutionary debate.

001 A Space Odyssey is more than just an epic adventure across the solar system; it is a compelling look at the story of life itself, a fictional Origin of the Species. By presenting the relationships of evolution, technology, and a higher power in the guise of a science-fiction voyage, Arthur C. Clarke is able to successfully bridge the gap between Darwinism and creationism through literary means. Furthermore, the gripping final moments of the book are a poignant reminder of how much farther mankind can evolve, and of the limitless possibilities for human achievement.

Your future is out there

It may seem ironic to speak about profits and growth at a moment when most are thinking in terms of survival, or containment, in a weak global economy. However, this is precisely the time to worry about profits and the future. During good times, money is made simply by participating within industry, but during weak economic times wheat is sorted from chaff. It is at this time that the true character and standing of the enterprise is exposed.

The message here is simple. Customers are scarce. Without them business ceases to exist. They are the foundation of the business. Therefore both acquiring and especially keeping customers, is critical. Whether the purpose of an enterprise is to create shareholder wealth or to serve the customer is purely academic. The two objectives are inseparable since profit, and therefore wealth, is only possible if the customer gives his custom to the enterprise.

Allow us therefore to make two comments

Cheap College Papers on Marketing - what management is about

• Customers are not stupid. They can spot dilettantes posing as managers and service personnel immediately. They will force weak enterprises to compete on price only. Unless the enterprise is in a monopolistic position, customers will defect at the earliest opportunity for better value.

• Keeping customers requires absolute commitment, converting everyone within the organisation to the understanding that they all work for the customer.

In large corporations the chief executive typically symbolises commitment. In SME's, owners take on this role and need to be professional in their approach. Indeed, paying lip service is so destructive since there is direct contact with practically all employees, who in turn will spread the wrong message and attitude so quickly. Practically every SME employee is also a customer touch-point. Therefore customers soon get to experience the true attitude of the owners, fulfilling the axiom 'treating customers like they treat employees'.

So owner commitment is absolutely necessary for employees to believe that their business believes in the service quality that its marketing strategy dictates and it is this employee belief that translates into the service quality that clients expect.

Then, being professional means understanding and believing in marketing wholeheartedly. Now already a number of you readers are huffing and about to drop this article! If you think that marketing is just advertising and bllst then its best you read on.

Marketing should be the whole operation of the company as it tries to figure out not only how to sell what it makes, but what to make and where to sell. It forces the organisation to work from the outside in, instead of the inside out. This means, to take the client's viewpoint and to see the enterprise as the client sees it.

Marketing, therefore, starts the process rather than ends it. Strategic marketing must be the driving force of any enterprise which has as its ultimate objective the enhancement of shareholder value it is, quite simply, what management is all about.

Text Box 1

SIMPLY PUT

Marketing is THE business function. It forces the organisation to work from the customer point of view. It is an orderly and insightful process for thinking about and planning for markets, and therefore customers.

Is marketing just another function like purchasing, or is it the function to drive all other functions? It is both. On one hand it drives other functions by forcing the organisation to think outside in. But also, it has an implementation aspect. Since business and marketing strategy is easily copied, the devil, and the reward, is in the implementation detail.

Simply put the marketing process involves

• Understanding customers and their needs, and differentiating between the customer and the end-consumer;

• Dealing with global markets that are splitting into tinier segments;

• Coping with both aggressive competition and stagnating markets & economies;

• Developing or participating in brand strategies, including maintenance of development of the corporate image;

• Driving a lasting marketing culture through the whole organisation;

• In some industries - coping with the growing size and strength of intermediaries;

• In some industries - coping with the proliferation and expense of media.

TEXT BOX

Blast from the past

During hard times, the obvious temptation is to delve into information that is readily available, structured and undisputable that is internal information (sales data, financial data, operational data and so on). This is necessary, but on its own is only inward looking and historic exactly the place where future profits will NOT exist. In the words of Parkinson (Professor C. Northcote Parkinson) "The person who is devoted to such paper-work has lost the initiative. He is dealing with things that are brought to his notice, having ceased to notice anything for himself. He has been essentially defeated in his job."

At best, internal information may highlight lessons from the past. It may be possible to identify trends, but the time lag involved means that competitors may have already picked this up and moved on. So the next temptation is to use this information for blame allocation.

The dissolution of the Eastern bloc and the Soviet Union after 18 had dramatic consequences for Cuba some 85% of its former export markets, as well as the considerable Soviet assistance to the amount of an estimated several billion US dollars per year disappeared. Both were essential for the functioning of the Cuban economy in its former shape. In the course of the economic special period (perĂodo especial) which has lasted since 18, Cuba was forced to reorient its economic relations and to restructure its economy.

Since the nineties, tourism has been the engine and main source of foreign exchange for the Cuban economy. In 00, Cubas gross income from about 1.68 million tourists amounted to just under USD billion, although the expected growth in this sector has failed to materialize because fewer tourists came due to September 11 and the economic problems in their own countries. In fact, there has even been a slight fall in the number of tourists. In addition, there are money transfers from Cubans abroad, especially from the United States, albeit to a lesser degree for the same reason. However, the number of US tourists rose to 180,000. Furthermore, in 00 60 cruise liners docked in Cuba and their passengers spent an average of USD 150. In contrast, the importance of sugar, which in the past used to earn the bulk of foreign exchange income, has declined. Other important export commodities are nickel, cigars, tropical fruits, as well as fish and seafood. Hurricanes Lili and Isidore, however, which struck in early October 00, did great damage to the crops in the west. The major imports are crude oil and oil products, machinery, vehicles and foodstuffs.

All in all, Cuba is suffering from a considerable lack of foreign currency, a situation which has been exacerbated by the economic losses in the wake of September 11 and the hurricanes. It is hardly able to pay for the most urgent imports and has been forced to take up short-term loans at unfavourable conditions. Cuba is trying to attract foreign investment, which, however, is possible only in the form of joint ventures with Cuban state-owned enterprises.

The cautious economic reforms carried out since 1, such as allowing Cubans to hold US dollars, enabling foreign investments, the promotion of tourism, the reopening of agricultural products markets, as well as the permission for micro-enterprises to operate within certain limits, are intended to make the system of a centrally controlled economy more efficient, without, however, really transforming it. Although these reform measures have in part improved the situation of the population, they have also widened the gulf between rich and poor.

The most important economic sectors are

Agriculture With an estimated .6 million tonnes annually (001/00), the importance of sugar production is still considerable. In 00/00, however, the harvest is expected to fall for the first time under million tonnes to .5 million tonnes due to the restructuring of the sugar industry (closure of about half of the sugar factories). In addition, tobacco, coffee, tropical fruits and vegetables are produced.

The importance of export-oriented fisheries (especially crayfish and shrimp), fish farming as well as that of the fish-processing industry is falling (exports in 000 87. million pesos, 001 78.8 million pesos).

In the mineral resources sector, significant amounts of nickel and cobalt (00 75,600 tonnes) and heavy oil (00 4.1 million tonnes including natural gas) are produced. Several companies are trying to develop new deposits, also in the exclusive economic zone in the seas west of Cuba.

Traditionally, trade and industry used to be concentrated on the domestic market. Now, however, Cuba would like to do more to develop the export industry, as well as the dollar sector, especially tourism. Cuba is a world leader in biotechnology research. In addition, spin-offs from sugar production (such as chipboard), oil derivatives, textile processing, as well as the cement industry play a role. Investments in the export and tourist sector have priority because they bring in or save foreign currency.

In the service sector, tourism had steadily grown until the autumn of 001. From 750,000 visitors in 15, the figure jumped to 1.8 million in 000. In 001, the figures stagnated in the aftermath of September 11 and as a result of the economic problems in the tourists home countries. Gross income from this sector rose from about USD 1 billion in 15 to about USD 1. billion in 000. In 00, revenue amounted to just under USD billion. Roughly 70% of this sum must be spent for imports or for domestic purchases against foreign currency.

After 18/10, GDP decreased by at least 5%. This trend was not reversed until 14. Official growth figures 14 0.7%; 15 .5%; 16 7.8%; 17 .5%; 18 1.%; 1 6.%; 000 5.6%; 001 %; 00 1.1%.

In 00, GDP officially amounted to 7.6 billion pesos (at current prices), i.e. ,500 pesos per capita, or 85% of the 18 level. However, the value of these figures is limited since they are based on the official exchange rate (1 peso = USD 1) and the peso is not convertible. In the state-run exchange offices the exchange rate in early 00 was ca. 6 pesos = USD 1 (for cash transactions of private individuals only). Since quite recently, official GDP figures expressed in dollars are calculated on the basis of purchase power parity (this model includes free medical and educational services). In accordance with this, GDP was USD 57.7 billion, i.e. about USD 5,00 per capita. No information can be provided on the reliability of these figures.

In 00, Cubas exports and imports totalled USD 1.4 billion and 4.1 billion respectively; the volume of trade amounted to USD 5.5 billion, and the balance of trade deficit USD .7 billion. The deficit was financed through the surplus in the balance of service transactions, as well as transfers and net capital imports.

Have you noticed that almost everybody wants what he or she does not have? No one ever stops for a second and appreciate the possessions that they already have. They do not realize how fortunate they are to have so many things. Up until this essay, I never did either. It was when I started thinking about and writing this essay that brought my inanimate objects to my attention. Many belongings in my life are important to me, they all serve me various purposes, and each one is useful in its own way. But when it comes to everything, the object has changed and affects my life the most is without a doubt, my laptop computer with Internet. This object is tremendously vital in my life because it makes doing homework a lot easier, and provides me with communication towards my friends or anyone else I want to be in contact with. Nothing else that I own serves me such a great purpose. Therefore, I really do not know what I would do without my laptop.

I remember the days when I wanted to have my very own laptop computer. Back then; I was tired of always fighting my brother for the desktop computer because I never won. It was the Christmas of that year when I received this laptop as a present from my parents. As of this year, my Hewlett Packard pavilion ze4101 laptop is just shy of years old. Just about a year ago, I had wireless Internet installed on it. Since then, this laptop has been more convenient than ever. Because I use it about 4/7 I have a great bond formed with my computer.

Having this laptop is very essential because it helps me with just about all of my homework. The program on this computer, other than Internet that I most value is, Microsoft Word. It is very useful because with the program, I do not have to hand write out all of my homework, physically helping me out a whole lot. It also automatically proofreads my essay and corrects any mistakes I make, helping me score higher point amounts on my homework, improving my grade. The Internet helps me with my homework because of all the resources and useful information I can find on search engines or various websites. The belief that the order of things in one's life is already decided and that people's lives are determined by this "greater power" is called fate. Many people called fatalists, believe in this and believe that they have no power in determining their futures. Others believe that coincidence explains the way their lives and the lives of others turn out. Although fate plays a big role in the forming of the plot in Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy portrays chance and coincidence as continuously having more significant roles throughout the novel. Three such coincidences were quite influential and had large effects on Tess's future.

Right from the start of the novel, the theme of coincidences and chance is very evident. Upon returning to his home one evening, Durbeyfield meets a man named Parson Tringham who tells him that the Durbeyfield family is the "lineal representative of the ancient and knightly family of the d'Urbervilles, who . . . came from Normandy with William the Conqueror."(1) If Parsons had not have told Jack about his lineage, his life would have followed his same lazy habits and the events to follow may not have happened. This news causes Jack to tell his family and it changes his approach to the way his family will live. Joan Durbeyfield, John's wife, recalls that a man by the name of d'Urberville lives not far from their home and might be able to help them in their hard times, seeing as how he sounds related to them. The chance that somebody having the same last name and living close to the Durbeyfields is rare. If Mrs. Durbeyfield knew about these "relatives" living nearby, why had they not gone to visit them or ask for help earlier? Nonetheless, the Durbeyfields seek help from the d'Urbervilles by sending their eldest daughter Tess to visit.

Once Tess goes to seek help, chance and coincidence start to take control over Tess's life. The family sends their eldest daughter, Tess to see if the d'Urberville family would help them, with side hopes of Tess possibly marrying a gentleman and restoring their family's status. Had Tess stayed at home instead of going to the d'Urberville home, she would not have met Alec nor would she have bore his child out of wedlock and her life would have been completely different. Tess would still have her innocence and the chance at having a better life than the one she now has. Tess's shame of having a baby out of wedlock overtook her and she left her birthplace of Marlott to find work at a dairy called Talbothay's. Tess uses her escape for a much needed break from all the stresses and hardships in her life. This change in scenery seems to be what Tess needs in order to get away from the pain Alec has caused her. Her trip to Talbothay's represents a change for Tess and a new life.

The change Talbothay's brings for Tess is what she needs in order to bring order and control back into her life. But by chance Tess meets Angel Clare who she ends up falling in love with and she accepts his marriage proposal. The coincidence that Tess met the guy of her dreams while trying to get away from the relationship scene is ironic. This coincidence seems too good to be true to Tess and she realizes that her past is important for the success of this relationship. "Declare the past to him by word of mouth she could not, but there was another way. She sat down and wrote . . . a succinct narrative of those events of three or four years ago, put it into an envelope, and directed it to Clare."(164) By pure chance, her letter not only slipped underneath his door and into his room, but it also slipped underneath his carpet where he could not see it which causes some problems since the wedding is coming up. Had Angel seen the letter, the wedding would not have happened. Because Angel did not see the letter, the relationship is not a true one and Tess is haunted by her secret.

Tess's life is becoming more hectic again and she does not seem to have any control over it. When Tess finally does confesses to Angel, he does forgive her and leaves for Brazil, not allowing for contact between Tess and him. Tess took a chance in telling Angel the truth about her past and it backfired on her. Angel is acting selfish for not forgiving Tess when she forgave him for his earlier affair. Tess runs into Alec d'Urberville, while Angel is in Brazil, who notices her and pursues her for some time and to make matters worse, during the time of this coincidental run in with Alec, Tess's mother becomes ill and her father soon dies. This coincidence of Tess's father dying at just the right moment for Alec to marry her and Angel returning only a little after leads to the murder of Alec d'Urberville. It leads to Tess's murder of Alec because of the strife he causes in her life and, ultimately, her death.

Through each and every one of these coincidences, Tess's life changed quite dramatically. Each event that occurred by complete chance left Tess in a predicament where she was compelled to take control and do something to improve the situation. Some people may have believed that all of these incidents were Tess's fate, but Thomas Hardy does not believe so. He believes that life contains many coincidences that lead one to another. Every coincidence or occurrence that came along forced Tess to rethink her situation and draw up the courage to face her problems and overcome them. The consequences that came, due to her decisions were all ones that Tess brought upon herself.Please note that this sample paper on Who's in Control of Your Life? is for your review only.
