Communism and Animal Farm

Imagine if you are one of the animals on Animal Farm. You stage a revolution to free yourself of Farmer Jones so that you can have rights. You will be tricked into thinking you are in a socialist government where everyone is equal, when in fact, you are in a communist government where there is a cruel leader. As an animal you will be treated unfairly not just once but many times by Napoleon, a pig, and by the other pigs who slowly take control of all the animals living on the farm, so that they could have absolute power.

One of the inequalities in Animal Farm is how the animals get less food then the pigs. One of the times where this happens is the milk and apples incident. This is the first sign of corruption. While the animals go out to harvest the fields, they leave Napoleon with the milk. They are surprised to find out the milk has disappeared. Later on this is all justified when Squealer a pig says, "Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve our health…. Do you know what would happen if we failed in our duty? Jones would come back!" (5) In other words, the pigs should deserve better than the rest of the animals because they are protecting the other animals. None of the animals like Jones, so they agree. 1

Order Custom COMMUNISM AND ANIMAL FARM paper

Another act of inequality is the way the animals have to work, while the pigs just supervise and don't have to earn their privileges. For instance, the animals have to work

for food, if they don't work they don't get food, while the pigs always get food. Towards the end of the book Orwell writes, "…[O]ut came Napoleon himself, he carried a whip in his trotter."(1). This tells how the pigs started using whips to get the animals to work.

Initially all the animals are equal, and the commandments are made for every animal to follow. The commandments are

1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.

. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings is a friend.

. No animal shall wear clothes.

4. No animal shall sleep in a bed.

5. No animal shall drink alcohol.

6. No animal shall kill any other animal.

7. All animals are equal. (4)

Yet the commandments are all changed eventually by the pigs for their own needs. For instance commandment three, "No animal shall sleep in a bed", is changed to," No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets", ( ) so the pigs will be able to sleep in the house. Squealer justifies all this by saying, "A bed is just a sleeping place, all animals sleep in beds. While sheets are a human invention and the house is a more suitable place for us more suitable." ( ) This implies that as leaders, the pigs deserve a better place to live and sleep.

All of this has to do with how Animal Farm starts equal and what the commandments finally stated by the end of the book, "All animals are equal, but some are more equal then others."(1). Which means, that the pigs have more power then the other animals. This is just like communism, because communism is where there are two parties the communists who the pigs stood for because they are in charge, and the working class, which the animals stood for because they are the ones who work. All of this happened so Napoleon could lower the animals' privileges and raise his and the pigs' privileges so they could get absolute power.

Women in Combat Women have played a tremendous roll in many countries armed

forces from the past to the present. Women have thoroughly integrated into the

armed forces; all positions in the armed forces should be fully accessible to women

who can compete with men intellectually and physically. Yet, many argue that the

distinction between combat and non-combat becomes blurred in the context of

war.The idea of women in combat is not unusual anymore. They should be able to

hold combat positions beacause although physical strength matters, the military

still needs the intelligence that women can bring. Also, banning women from the

combat hurts their military careers. Although women account for only ten percent

of the enlisted personnel (Time, 8/1/5/ Pg. 1), they are still a major role in war.

Women in Front Line Combat When it comes to combat assignments and the needs

of the military, men take precedence over all other considerations, including career

prospects of female service members. Female military members have been

actually know about the women? Women in the nineteenth century were beginning

For the past seven years, I have been going on summer mission trips with my youth group. Every year I raise all the money for my trip as they have gotten rather expensive. Many of my sponsors have been supporting me on every trip I've been on, or at least the last two or three, and whenever I return home from one of my trips I sit down and write a letter of thanks to them telling them what lessons their contributions have allowed me the opportunity to learn abroad. Just keeping up with these relationships alone has taught me a great deal about myself and about people in general, and forces me, each summer, to assess my own personal growth and document it in these letters.

My most recent adventure was to the lush mountains of Jamaica. There, in an impoverished ghost town, God taught me perseverance and patience through a little girl and gratefulness and humility through a mural.

One day I had the amazing opportunity to help a young girl about the age of to improve her reading skills. I was reading Jane Eyre for school before dinner, when she came up to me and asked what I was doing. I showed her the book and explained it was for school and asked if she was learning to read in school. She nodded but shyly said that she was not very good at it. I then asked her if she wanted to read with me and she agreed. For the next 45 minutes, we read one page of Jane Eyre sounding out each syllable one at a time. She was amazingly patient and perseverant, and when asked if she wanted to stop, she kept saying no! Encouraged by her persistence and invigorated by her desire to learn I was in turn given patience and desire to help. While a tedious task, I found so much joy in watching her start to catch on and recognize some words as they reappeared on the page over and over. I felt badly for the girl that she had to struggle through such a difficult book at such a tender age of , but at the same time I was so proud of her that she persisted. By the time we were about two lines from the bottom of the page, she did peek under my hand to see how much further was left as she was justly tired, but once we finished I asked her if she would like to continue the next day and she said she would! I never saw her again, but this did not keep God from instilling a lesson of perseverance and patience and passion in my heart. This single block of 45 minutes fueled my drive to press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus, (Phil 14), for the rest of the week.

On this trip I also had the awesome chance to paint a mural on the wall of a school. This was such a joy for me as it was the first time I was able to use my talents directly for the glory of God. The teachers' and God's encouragement and appreciation were all I needed to keep me going as the mural was no simple task to paint with nothing but my fingers, a stick, some leaves, and a one-inch trim brush. On the last day of our time in Catadupa, I recruited my sister and a few other girls to help me finish the painting. Claire, my sister, spent 6 hours mapping out and painting the Jamaican coat of arms and I couldn't have completed the wall without her. I also learned some leadership skills while serving as I had to keep an eye on the other girls working and make sure everybody had a job and knew what she was to do next.

My memories of Catadupa are gems I keep in my heart, and the lessons I learned there are innumerable and priceless. I still correspond with a dear friend I made down there named Jody-Ann, and I still pray often for the villagers of Jamaica. God touched my heart with those people in ways they will never know, and I only hope I left as cherished an impression on them as they did on me. Some day I hope to return to the dancing flowers and waving arms and charming smiles of Jamaica so I may see God a little clearer, and spread His love a little farther.

I remember watching part of American History X about two years ago. The only part of this movie I saw was when the skinhead was sent to jail for killing a black man. Not until last month that I remembered the name of the movie and I had seen it for sale in Wal Mart. I had to buy it because I knew it was a must see movie. I saw it and then this movie comes out as a topic for an essay I had to write about. I picked this movie because since I had seen it already I would have something to write about. American History X focuses on the life of a young white man who is going thru racial issues and the views of government and his opinion on how people should be treated based on their color of their skin. According to him this was class structure. His his opinion was that white men should rule and other races were viewed as nothing.

This movie somewhat deals with what Adolf Hitler had done or believed for. In the movie the organization called D.O.C. which stands for (Disciples of God) views Hitler as a god. They portrait Hitler as if he was the ruler of the world and that they saw the white people as a supremacy even though they didn't believe in the KKK. To them the KKK was an "disorganizaned group of redneck's that were racists"( Kaye, "American History X"). Class structure to these people were seen as color. White people to them should have a say so in politics. People of color did not seem important to them and were viewed inferior. They would often call the mexican race "spics" and the black race "niggers". They had no respect toward other races. To one of them Rodney King provoked everything. He viewed Rodney King as a liar and a person who exaggerated things to look like the victim and the cops as the aggressors therefore people viewed Rodney as a hero. Which to him Rodney King was the one starting a fight against the cops and then someone starts video taping the scene when the cops start beating on him.

while they were sleeping they heard some noise outside. Since it was a self defense act and invasion of property he only got years. But still for killing a man he got punished. While he was doing time he learn some hard valuable lessons. In jail everybody helps everybody out. They excluded race. Because of a black male he had met he came out alive. He came out a changed man from what he experienced in jail. His views before he went in jail were full of racism. When he's in jail he sees that everything he believed for is a fake. The other skinheads who are in jail do also have that swastika and everything but they don't really care about it. They're all in jail making allies with other races and making deals with them. He can't stand it no more so he heads of alone. He leaves his group he hanged around in jail and is all alone. That's when he starts talking to this guy who's a leader on the black group and tells them to leave him alone. In those years he was in there he never got touched. He was a ghost. years had passed and he came out of that phase of being in a group. He was afraid his little brother would be falling into his steps. Which he was. He started doing everything different. Getting a job so that they can relocate and teaching his brother why he should stop hanging around with the skinheads. Church v State; this has been a serious issue for centuries, even back on the time of Augustine. A more recent concern is the problem of displaying religious items at public and government buildings. Should it be allowed? Is it covered under the freedom of religion clause mentioned in the First Amendment?

The First Amendment gives citizens the right to take part in religious speech in "public forum." The First Amendment states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." The Supreme Court decisions have made the First Amendment controversial. Practices that the court has declared unconstitutional include prayer and displays of religious symbols or portions or scripture on public property.

A case which helps clearly present information of the church v state relationship today, regarding public expression of private religious beliefs, would be Capital Square Review and Advisory Board v Pinette, where a private group wanted to place a cross in a public park during holiday season. The Supreme Court explained, "Respondents religious display in Capital Square was private expression. Our precedent establishes that private religious speech, far from being a first amendment orphan, is fully protected under the Free Speech Clause as a secular private expression." The Courts decision was made based upon the facts that the park has historically been open for different expressive activities, the group had asked for permission, and for the agreement to also erect a sign disclaiming any government endorsement.

Other cases which clarifying this relatively would be County of Allegheny v ACLU and Lynch v Donnelly. In the Allegheny case, Supreme Court had to judge the constitutionality of two holiday displays in Pittsburgh. One was a crèche by the Allegheny Courthouse, and the other was a menorah by the City-County Building. Here, the court stated that while the crèche was unconstitutional, and the menorah was not. The reason, determined by Justices Blackmun and O'Connor, was because there were no secular symbols such as Santa Clause and reindeer.

Buy cheap Church VS State term paper

Although the crèche was considered unconstitutional, it did not violate the Establishment Clause which prohibits the federal government from declaring and financially supporting a national religion. It does not have the effect of advancing or inhibiting religion. So it technically should have been allowed to be placed on display as well.

In the Lynch case, all was pretty much the same deal as the Allegheny case. The difference was that Lynch had a crèche as well as a Santa Claus, reindeer, candy canes, a Christmas tree, carolers, and toys. They actually used what is called the Three Prong Lemon Test which states that if an action violates the Establishment Clause then it is unconstitutional to conclude that the crèche did not violate the Establishment Clause.

In conclusion, the separation of church and state does not forbid religious displays on public and government property. "The Supreme Court consistently ruled that the Establishment Clause does not require a state entity to exclude private religious speech from a public forum." From court decisions, I conclude that religious displays should be allowed to be displayed on public and government property as long as all necessary actions are taken to follow the Establishment Clause.

Poems can portray various different messages throughout their context depending on the viewpoint in which you look at the meaning from. In W. H. Auden's poem he depicts two clearly diverse attitudes, one is of the clocks and the other is of the lover in the poem, he makes this clear through his use of such techniques as diction and imagery.

On the one hand, W.H. Auden portrays the attitude of the clocks through his use of imagery and diction. A first example is shown in the sixth stanza, when Auden writes, "O let not Time deceive you,/You cannot conquer Time." By saying this Auden shows that the speaking of the clocks is a way of warning the lover that he does not have forever, and that Time, in essence, rules all. No matter what you do to try to conquer Time you will not live forever. Furthermore, Auden shows the attitude of the clocks towards the end of the poem using mainly imagery. For example, he tells the reader to plunge their hands in water, in order to see what they have missed in life. This is mainly to allow the reader to realize that things are not always what they seem, in this case, he is speaking of the realization which must be made that Time does not necessarily last forever and you must make the most of what you have for now. Finally, Auden makes sure that the reader perceives his message undoubtedly. In the last two lines of his poem he writes, "The clocks had ceased their chiming,/And the deep river ran on." Evidently he is saying that life will go on, the clocks stood as a warning to spend your life doing things which you like to do, things you enjoy, because you only have a limited amount of time here. However, the river which was brimming in the beginning of the poem is still running, therefore proving that life goes on, even though sometimes you may think it won't. Through the attitude of the clocks Auden clearly proves his point that Time is everything, it rules all and you must live your life to the fullest.

On the other hand, while W.H. Auden clearly portrays the attitude of the clocks he also shows the ignorant attitude of the lover, once again using mainly diction and imagery. Unlike the clocks, the lover does not realize that Time cannot be defeated and it rules all. Initially, in the beginning of the poem where the narrator first acknowledges the lover's song, he speaks of a brimming river. The word 'brimming' is used to describe the river but it can also be tied to the vivid description of his adoration for his lover. Another example of Auden's use of imagery is when he further describes how much he loves her, eternally, and says, "I'll love you till the ocean/Is folded and hung up dry,/And the seven stars go squawking/Like geese about the sky." In the stanza the amount of imagery used is incredible, Auden also incorporates alliteration to even further the reader's awareness for the lover's love. The lover believes that he has forever and that his love will be eternal, not aware that Time is not able to be overcome. However, the clocks begin to "whirr and chime" attempting to teach the lover a lesson and to allow him to become a little bit less ignorant, especially when it comes to love and life. Finally, when the lovers leave the river, it is still running and the clocks have stopped chiming clearly signifying that they have learned the lesson and their overall outlook and attitude towards life have been affected for the ages.

Thus, it is unmistakably made evident that the attitude of the lover and that of the clocks as presented in the poem by W.H. Auden clearly contrast each other. However, in the end the attitude of the lover was affected immensely by the attitude of the clocks.

The Mezzanine A Review

By Lacey Kaufman

Upon beginning to read the Mezzanine I felt the urge to disregard the book in its entirety. The long passages about this thing or that thing was tedious and it was hard to follow just for the simple reason that it was different than that which I am used to reading. Eventually, however, I did settle into the book and let the words develop into sense in their own time. The most enjoyable parts of the book are the ones that smack with familiarity, knowing that I have thought something similar to what Baker is saying . These thoughts, easily recognizable but never clearly defined, where like a reminder of a dream that I could not remember.

The Mezzanine follows a character, Howie, through each of his thoughts for only the beginning of a work day. The reader does not only get to look at the characters present state of mind though, for his thoughts are all deeply rooted in origin and habit, of which he is more than happy to share. This back history for each thought, makes the reader realize that each of his own thoughts have a history, although quite original, not that different from the ones that Baker describes. Throughout the morning, this business man addresses ideas, so intricate and fresh that at first they appear alarming. Baker's character even comes off as a little bit "crazy", and yet he knows himself better than most all readers. The only disappointing part of his stairway of thoughts is the fact that he rarely addresses what could be improved in his own realm of emotional and intellectual security. Baker eludes to his characters insecurity and dissatisfaction with his own life, only briefly. There is a line in the first half in which Howie relates that he has not become the man he had wished, and even expected to become. He also seems to have a spiritual battle with his lustful thoughts, this is shown through a disturbing relationship between himself and a female cashier who sells him Penthouse (though he would rather be purchasing the filthiest of the smut such as, Club). In Howie's list of thoughts some of them are that he has no friends, and that his friends are smarter than him. This shows not only his truly human reactions, but an insecurity that, unlike the bulk of his thoughts, illogically and not based on anything factual.

Order Custom The Mezanine paper

I think this book is more for the male population, for there are several parts to which Justus could relate wholly, while I was left looking through the window into a mind very much unlike my own. Of course this is more than just because Justus is male and I am female; he constantly thinks about the details of life that I rarely consider. The male driven prospective is shown most evidently when Howie speaks of urinals, and the fascination with women taking their bras off while remaining dressed.

It is truly amazing that Baker and explore so many avenues of reality through the morning of one man's thoughts. Each topic of our humanities class was covered at least briefly and always in perspective I hd yet to consider. Gender is explored by viewing things through a males eyes. Relationships are looked at by the way he treats his coworkers, his girlfriend L, and his parents. Howie seems almost cold to anything that can not be picked apart, but I don't think that, that's entirely true; maybe he was just not thinking about people as much as he was about things on the morning we share with him.

Overall I think the book is an amazing piece of Art that allows each reader to rethink his rethinking. With each moment there is a fragment of history, our own, and others. Upon closer examination, perhaps we all could benefit from Howie's perspective of life. Please note that this sample paper on The Mezanine is for your review only.
