For the past seven years, I have been going on summer mission trips with my youth group. Every year I raise all the money for my trip as they have gotten rather expensive. Many of my sponsors have been supporting me on every trip I've been on, or at least the last two or three, and whenever I return home from one of my trips I sit down and write a letter of thanks to them telling them what lessons their contributions have allowed me the opportunity to learn abroad. Just keeping up with these relationships alone has taught me a great deal about myself and about people in general, and forces me, each summer, to assess my own personal growth and document it in these letters.

My most recent adventure was to the lush mountains of Jamaica. There, in an impoverished ghost town, God taught me perseverance and patience through a little girl and gratefulness and humility through a mural.

One day I had the amazing opportunity to help a young girl about the age of to improve her reading skills. I was reading Jane Eyre for school before dinner, when she came up to me and asked what I was doing. I showed her the book and explained it was for school and asked if she was learning to read in school. She nodded but shyly said that she was not very good at it. I then asked her if she wanted to read with me and she agreed. For the next 45 minutes, we read one page of Jane Eyre sounding out each syllable one at a time. She was amazingly patient and perseverant, and when asked if she wanted to stop, she kept saying no! Encouraged by her persistence and invigorated by her desire to learn I was in turn given patience and desire to help. While a tedious task, I found so much joy in watching her start to catch on and recognize some words as they reappeared on the page over and over. I felt badly for the girl that she had to struggle through such a difficult book at such a tender age of , but at the same time I was so proud of her that she persisted. By the time we were about two lines from the bottom of the page, she did peek under my hand to see how much further was left as she was justly tired, but once we finished I asked her if she would like to continue the next day and she said she would! I never saw her again, but this did not keep God from instilling a lesson of perseverance and patience and passion in my heart. This single block of 45 minutes fueled my drive to press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus, (Phil 14), for the rest of the week.

On this trip I also had the awesome chance to paint a mural on the wall of a school. This was such a joy for me as it was the first time I was able to use my talents directly for the glory of God. The teachers' and God's encouragement and appreciation were all I needed to keep me going as the mural was no simple task to paint with nothing but my fingers, a stick, some leaves, and a one-inch trim brush. On the last day of our time in Catadupa, I recruited my sister and a few other girls to help me finish the painting. Claire, my sister, spent 6 hours mapping out and painting the Jamaican coat of arms and I couldn't have completed the wall without her. I also learned some leadership skills while serving as I had to keep an eye on the other girls working and make sure everybody had a job and knew what she was to do next.

My memories of Catadupa are gems I keep in my heart, and the lessons I learned there are innumerable and priceless. I still correspond with a dear friend I made down there named Jody-Ann, and I still pray often for the villagers of Jamaica. God touched my heart with those people in ways they will never know, and I only hope I left as cherished an impression on them as they did on me. Some day I hope to return to the dancing flowers and waving arms and charming smiles of Jamaica so I may see God a little clearer, and spread His love a little farther.
