I study in Saraswathi Kendra. At present I am in my 11th standard and I have taken up subjects pertaining to my dads profession. I have studied in this school for the last years and I have learnt so much here, so much about the side of life I had a blind eye for earlier.

The entrance to this school is a passage with beautiful green trees and plants growing and giving us (the children of the school) a warm welcome. We have our school on our right, a simple building and The C.P Art foundation office on the other side. Directly in front of us we have the house of our correspondent, Nandita Krishnan.

As I entered the building on my first day, I was so overwhelmed to see some special children, amongst normal children. I felt really bad looking at children who are physically or mentally or emotionally handicapped. I saw children who have been robbed of many blessings which you and I take for granted. I was so taken aback at this scenario that I, at first, thought my mother has brought me to a school meant for retarded children. I decided not to join this school as I didnt think I had place or rather I never thought I would fit in here because I was normal. That was my first mistake.

I went back home to tell my mother that I hated the school because there were so many mad children and I asked my mother if she thought I was mad to join this school. Well she explained to me the advantages of joining this school - It was flexible on attendance and I could excel in my squash carrier. So I had to join this mad school (which is what I used to call it earlier).

My first few months in the school were not very enjoyable because my attitude had not yet changed. I met many normal children who also had a sports background like me, in the school including very potential singers, tennis players, cricket players, golf players, poets etc. I also heard that Shashank had passed out of my school and the young up coming Chinmaye! I still had considered myself to be superior.

One day I had finished class early and I was on my way home when I saw this boy getting out of the car and all the teachers around him. He was almost bald and most of the remaining hair on his head was gray. His face looked more like a Downs child, he was not a Downs child. Although he had all these physical deformities, his face had a peculiar and sparkling brightness to it. His left leg was about 10 inches shorter than his right leg. He had a special sort of shoe beneath which the sole was 10 inches higher just so that both the limb lengths match. He did not have a thighbone (I am not sure exactly why he didnt have one). He had metal plates instead, of course on top of which the skin and flesh has grown. The metal plates had extensions from the side that would protrude out of his thigh in places and those extensions had a separate metal attached for support. These extensions looked more like bridges connecting the supports.

He walked into school with great difficulty and I could make out that every step he took was filled with pain and his eyes would get all red and start watering. This is when I felt so upset but at the same time I was grateful that it wasnt me who had to go through all the pain. With a bright and cheerful smile he gave my principal a big, tight hug and asked her how she was doing. With a wide and pleasant smile across his face, he told us that he was going for his science practical examination and that he hopes to get the Archemedes principle experiment. I was still upset because I saw this handicapped boy full of life and me, completely blessed had so much to complain about. He looked at me and noticed that I was upset. He told me that may be if he could bend down and look at me upside down, that way he could spot the smile on my face! I have never stopped smiling from that day on - even if I am upset.

Many students in my school are autistic. An autistic child is one who goes off into ones own world and starts talking about subjects unconnected to the topic the others around him are talking about. Without even realizing, they get up and walk out of the class and even if you call them they wouldnt respond.

This particular autistic child came running towards me last week, the moment I entered school and held my hand. He had a smile across his face and he wished me a Good Morning! He came with me to class where I joined my friends. The moment we entered my class all my friends started laughing at him. I was taken aback and I screamed at them and asked them what they found so funny in the little child. They told me that he always acts weird and then they told me how this boy had once, while sitting in class just started talking to himself. I told them that they werent perfect and that they had absolutely no right to laugh at this child.

My friends didnt listen and they continued laughing. I was infuriated with them. The little boy squeezed my hand and told me that when I am in situations like this I must realize that I cannot change the others around me but instead change myself into a better person- a mature person and a more open-minded person.

He also told me that I could use this in many walks of life. A year old boy giving me advise on how to live my life!!!! Its astonishing! But its true. I thought that since I was very much older I knew a lot more. But I was proved wrong once again.

Many more such lessons I have learnt after joining this school. The school that I thought was for mad people, actually in the end taught me a lot. So remember, the next time you see an abnormal child do not think that he is inferior to you. On the contrary, he may be our next Einstein!
