The Medieval Period, a time of Lords and Knights, pilgrimages to visit famous shrines, and the profound power held by the church. Due to this power, certain members of the clergy take their authority a little too far and abuse their rights. Power is not easily contended, and there are certain characteristics to be administered in order for one to be a member of the power-holding church. Because of this limitation, the clergy are identified as ideal or hypocritical. Having to demonstrate actions of humbleness and simplicity are two of the many characteristics required among one member of the clergy, the Pardoner. In the poem, The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer displays the Pardoners physical description and personality as apart of his hypocrisy and how in the Pardoners Tale he manages to create a story during his pilgrimage of how greed can lead to corruption and death.

With the use of physiognomy and physical description, the author creates the Pardoner to be more female than male. Being called effeminate gives him a perfidious or hypocritical characteristic. Also the personality of the Pardoner is to be humble and selfless, being a member of the clergy, but he is the exact opposite endowing him a deceptive classification. He also manages to stratagem others into believing in holy objects to profit off of them when they are all made up. An example of his deceptiveness is shown when Chaucer writes, There was no pardoner of equal grace for in his trunk he had a pillow case which he asserted was Our Ladys

Veil on one short day, in money down, he drew more than the parson in a month or two. It is obvious that the pardoners attention is not set on the responsibility to the church especially when he made monkeys of the priest and congregation, but rather to fulfill his greed.

During his journey to Canterbury, the Pardoner devises a story stating, greed is the root to all evil. To have him create this story and say this instinctively identifies him as a hypocrite because he demonstrates the same attitude as the characters in the story. When the author writes the story of the Pardoner telling about the three riders, he exemplifies their greed by stating, And here is a lot of gold that is to be divided equally among us three nevertheless, if I could shape things thus so that we share it out- the two of us. The greed among the three riders eventually lead them to their deaths. Ironically, the intention in this story is to establish the truth of moral, but the pardoner does not even follow his own advice.

The power given to the Pardoner is abused when he uses it for his own greedy implications and therefore confirms his hypocritical statement of greed being the root of all evil. By using the pilgrimage as the opportunity for the Pardoner to be shown allows the power of the church and the effect on the people come together. Jealousy is a significant theme in the slave narrative Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs. This theme is not only significant because it effects the emotions of characters, but because of what its causes, results and signifies. Thus, through jealousy Jacobs illustrates, displays and portrays the negative, vile and immoral aspects this particular emotion produces. By unmasking and revealing jealousy¡¯s unmistakably dire consequences Jacobs is also trying to convince the reader about certain things. She desires the reader to realize how jealousy brings about pitiful emotions and situations to not only the slaves but to the masters as well. Jacobs is firmly trying to exemplify how slavery is not only unfair to the slaves but how it produces conflict in the family as well.

Jealousy is most strongly apparent in the character of Doctor Flint.

His feelings of jealousy arouse trouble not only for Linda (Jacobs) but within his family as well. The supposedly married Dr. Flint desires and lusts over his slave Linda. However, Linda despises him and provokes him by relentlessly pushing him away or doing things that are aggravating and taxing to him. Through her words and actions Dr. Flint feels extreme jealousy. Thus, Dr. Flint behaves irrationally and unfairly. He not only verbally abuses her but he even goes as far as physically hurting her. He even cuts her hair a jealous fit. He truly loses all rationality because of his feelings of jealousy and lust.

However, it is not only Dr.Flint who behaves negatively and erratically

because of his jealousy. His feelings and actions in consequence affect Mrs.Flint as well. She is so overcome with feelings of jealousy and envy for Linda that she can not act civilly or morally. Not only does this supposedly Southern Christian women turn away Linda when she needs help, but she condemns her for her husbands actions. She is in a truly pathetic situation. Mrs.Flint can only voice her jealousy and anger on Linda. She

can not say or manifest true emotions to her husband who has hurt her the most.

Linda¡¯s unfortunate situation is another product of Dr.Flint¡¯s jealousy. Linda not only directly suffers from Dr.Flint¡¯s advances, but it causes her to react in irrational, unfounded ways. Linda first enters into a relationship with another man out of spite. Not only does she have a meaningless relationship with this man, but she also has two of his children as well. Linda does not love this man, nor this she believe she or her children have a future with this man. However, anger and spite caused by Dr.Flint¡¯s jealousy causes her to do these things.

All in all, Harriet Jacobs tries to show in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl how such an emotion like jealousy causes and brings about problems and conflicts. She wants the readers, particularly the northern white women during her time to see the evils brought about by slavery. She wants them to realize how slavery is not only wrong to the individual who is the slave, but how it affects the others such as the family and the estate as well. She displays how slavery can ruin the fundamentals and foundation of family. Hence, Harriet Jacobs illustrates how slavery produces malicious, obtrusive consequences for all¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦

Hamlet

Hamlet by William Shakespeare is a very tragic story. It is one that has stood the test of time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book for many reasons. First being that the reader was able to see inside the characters head especially Prince Hamlet. Shakespeare allowed you to see the process by which Hamlet's madness developed. This was very important because you are able to better understand his actions.Secondly the story is a timeless piece because the events that occur due to emotions still happen today. People will always be jealous , revengeful and people will always love.

The tragic tale of Prince Hamlet will make a lasting impression after reading it. From the opening scene it is tragic; it all begins with his father's death followed quickly by his mother's marriage to his uncle who has assumed the throne. Hamlet already overcome with grief and to make matters worse he is now seeing his father's ghost. His father then proceeds to tell him that his uncle murdered him. This is the start of the madness. Hamlet shuns Ophelia his true love , murders her father accidentally which then leads to Ophelia's suicide. He then decides to produce a play which replays his fathers murder proving that Uncle Claudius is guilty therefore justifying Hamlet's plot to kill him. The story then proceeds with Claudius plotting to kill Hamlet also. This is where Ophelia's brother Laertes comes into play. Being very much in Hamlet's position Laertes wants to avenge his father's death which means killing Hamlet. So he and Claudius hatch a plot to kill Hamlet with a poisoned drink or by a poisoned sword. So the duel takes place between Hamlet and Laertes which ends in Laertes death but not before he poisoned Hamlet with the sword. This is not the end though , Hamlet's mother Gertrude drinks the poisoned drink accidentally killing her. Before Laertes takes his final breath he reveals Claudius' plan which sends Hamlet into a fit of rage resulting in Claudius' death. Hamlet had now avenged his father's death, putting an end to his madness and an end to his life.

Shakespeare does an excellent job of opening the character to the reader especially Hamlet. This is evident when you read Hamlet's thoughts. You see his inner most feelings , the ones he refuses to show on the outside. Such as his feelings about Ophelia are completely different than what he tells her. He told her he didn't love her and that she should leave but when she dies he confesses his love for her. Shakespeare also helps you understand the character's personality by focusing on emotions that everyone can relate to. Through Hamlet's conversations with the ghost you are able to see his loyalty and respect for his family. Shakespeare shows jealousy in Claudius with his plan to kill King Hamlet and marry the Queen. He shows rage and revenge in

During my junior year in college, I traveled to Sub-Sahara Africa where I spent five months studying various aspects of the Swahili culture on the coast of Kenya. As an economics major, I was interested in obtaining a better understanding of the economic limitations of a third world country. The program focused on learning about Swahili life, language, and culture through firsthand experiences. By living with families and becoming intimately involved with everyday life, I became more aware of the social struggles and economic difficulties of the Muslim culture that populated the coastline.

The highlight of the program was the independent study, which allowed students to research a topic of choice for five weeks. I decided to travel to the island of Lamu, hoping to gain a better understanding of population growth trends and family planning efforts. I began by working at the local family planning center and talking to women in the community about their understanding of modern contraception. After a short period on the island, I came to the conclusion that there was a direct correlation between the amount of education received by a woman and her decision to use such methods. Then with the local female leaders, I helped to develop a program to educate the women about modern contraception. I consider my project to have been successful, because the number of women attending the family planning center grew slightly and, more importantly, because a program was established to increase the knowledge level of women in the community.

I feel that my awareness of Kenyan culture rose dramatically with my experience abroad. I possess a stronger appreciation for the difficulties that developing nations face, as well as an understanding of the economic limitations that prohibit third world countries from advancing. Specifically, my experience studying family planning and population control provided a perspective on the issues facing women in third world societies. I believe that lack of education is the single greatest factor limiting the advancements of third world nations.

To be an effective leader, a public official most maintain the highest ethical and moral standards.

The effectiveness of a public leader depends on many qualities vision, ability to communicate ideas and values, task commitment, full knowledge of the problems of the community, skills in taking advantage of the resources available to maximize success, among others. However, the final outcome of his work, that should be the improvement of the community living standards, i.e. the greater good, will only be achieved by a person that has high moral and ethical values and who lives and works following this core principles.

This can be seen best by observing the terrible situation caused by corruption in government in many nations. For example, the countries in Latin America suffer from a long established corruption in public institutions and in the government. Theft, bribery and nepotism among other felonies abound , impoverishing this nations and leading them to economic and political crisis. And this happens not only in the lower levels of the organizations, but even with Presidents, undermining the common people's faith in their political leaders.

For this kind of public officials, it is clear that their lack of ethical and moral principles is causing them not only to be ineffective, but certainly to lead their countries to failure.

Through the voice of a Dutch observer, the African slave market is described in high esteem. The Dutchman depicts the slave ships as providing a higher quality of life from what the slaves knew prior to their imprisonment. However, this man's portrayal of the slave trade is far from the truth.

Although the slave market in North America is most commonly remembered of all slave markets, traffic in slaves had existed for centuries before the arrival of the first European fleets along the African shore. The slaves used throughout Africa were mainly prisoners captured in battles with neighboring rivals. Slavery also existed in European countries before making its presence in the New World. But, with the discovery of the New World in the 140s came the subsequent planting of sugarcane in South America and the Caribbean Islands. The new plantations required more workers than could be provided by the small and inexperienced American Indian population in the New World. The European colonists were desperate for more laborers to toil in the brutal conditions of their sugarcane plantations.

As a solution to this problem, African slaves were shipped from the coasts and inland areas of Africa to labor in the New World. The new African slaves were somewhat less susceptible to European diseases than the American Indian population. This made the African slaves a much more desirable purchase. Altogether, between the early sixteenth century and the late nineteenth century, as many as ten million African slaves were transported to the Americas.

The Europeans were not the only people in support of the African slave trade. African intermediaries, such as private merchants, local elites, or trading state monopolies, were very active in the slave trade. Local monarchs in African states viewed the slave trade as a source of income. These elite Africans fully supported the slave trade because it boosted their own esteem. They were often paid in various types of imported goods, which included East Asian textiles, furniture, and other manufactured products. Although many of the actual slaves, and families of the slaves, were in much disagreement of the slave trade, they did not have the power to stop the process.

Custom Essays on A Slave Market in Africa

The slave trade, although it seemed very profitable at first to African elitists, had many dislocating effects. The importation of inexpensive manufactured goods from European countries diluted the establishment of local cottage industry and impoverished incalculable families. Political instability and civil strife intensified in Africa in response to the demand for slaves and the introduction of firearms. Although the coast of West Africa felt the greatest impact, almost all states who fell to the temptations of economic profit also contributed to the increase in conflict within their own state and amongst neighboring states. Please note that this sample paper on A Slave Market in Africa is for your review only. All the President's Men, by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, is the actual story of how Bernstein and his colleague Woodward broke the dramatic mystery that brought the downfall of President Richard M. Nixon. The Watergate scandal is one of the most unsettling political detective stories of the century. These journalists were able to put the scandalous pieces of the puzzle together and produce the series of stories that earned the Washington Post a Pulitzer Prize.

This book accurately portrays these two newspaper reporters working to expose criminal activities by a president, his advisors, and his political party. It displays the inner workings of a major newspaper, the Washington Post, and describes how many governmental institutions work. The book portrays a pivotal event in U.S. history and brings home the fact that Richard Nixon and his co-conspirators attempted nothing less than deliberate subversion of the U.S. Constitution and the democratic process.

This book also shows how everyone in the U.S. trusted and supported their elected officials and very rarely doubted them. It portrays how political figures can get away with sabotaging a national election and get away with it without having criminal charges filed against them. The novel portrays how politicians can get away with lying to the American people and how the American political culture is willing to do anything to win. It also depicts dedication to the president by the willingness of political figures to do anything to protect his reputation; even going as far as to take the blame for a crime they had nothing to do with. Woodward and Bernstein accurately portray American culture at the height of the Watergate scandal.

I have learned about the Watergate scandal through American history classes and information read, but this novel gave details I had never heard before. This book gave me a deeper understanding of the wide reaching political drama during the Nixon era.

Cheap University Papers on All the Presidents Men

Various illegal activities were conducted including burglary, wire tapping, violations of campaign financing laws, sabotage, and attempted use of government agencies to harm political opponents to help Richard Nixon win reelection in the 17 presidential elections. There were about 40 people charged with crimes related to the scandal. Most of them were convicted by juries or pleaded guilty. Watergate involved more high level government officials than any previous scandal.

When Woodward and Bernstein made a large implication, such as that of H.R. Haldemans involvement in the misuse of reelection funds, they employed as many as four or five sources. To make sure that they were not overly ambitious or biased, they frequently ran their story ideas, topics, and facts, by their editors, Sussman and Rosenfeld. This story was a potential boon to their career or a disaster in the making. They had to be certain. Bernstein and Woodward are acknowledged as being the ones to uncover Nixons dirty tricks.

Woodward and Bernstein emerged from the Watergate scandal as American heroes. To say they brought down the Nixon administration may be overdoing it; but they certainly tore the cover off a malodorous snake pit and brought it kicking and screaming into daylight.
