"But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land."

The main thesis of Martin Luther King's speech "I have a Dream" is call for abolishing of slavery and right for freedom of Black citizens in the America that must be achieved through political and social cooperation. In order to develop his thesis, Martin Luther King uses effectively parallelism. This rhetorical device is constructed with the use of two or more parallel sentences with similar structure a grammatical syntax. The use of parallelism is obvious at the very beginning of his speech when he says, "But one hundred…" All three sentences of this paragraph start with the same phrase, "One hundred years, later" and is followed by the same subject, "the Negro". In addition, all sentences convey the same picture of the life of Black American "chains of discrimination", "lives on a lonely island of poverty" and "finds himself on exile in his own land". The use of parallelism here is effective because constant repetition keeps concepts of racial segregation active in audience's mind as well as it emphasizes the point in a very dramatic manner. Moreover, this paragraph is very powerful because it places emphasis on the idea of current living conditions of Black Americans as inhumane and unjust. The entire paragraph builds to a climax through use of shameful conditions of Black's that calls for change. Here parallelism effectively links powerful imagery that portrays black suffering emphasizing negative aspects of the problem that later transition towards the solution, which indeed is the main thesis of Martin Luther King's successful speech.

Lemna spp., or duckweed as it is commonly known, is a small floating aquatic weed which has been found to be the cause of clogging of irrigation canals in the Serpentine area. It is a small plant with an adult frond usually is only between one and three millimeters in width. Source? The plant consists of a single, flattened, oval-shaped frond, which floats horizontally on the waters surface. There are no leaves or stems. The plant body is the main site for photosynthesis and nutrient uptake occurs through diffusion across all surfaces of the plant. This discards the need for a complex vascular system and also acts as a limiting factor upon its size. The plant usually has only one root, which is quite small; this is because nutrient intake occurs on all surfaces, excluding the need for a complex root system (Cross, 18-00). The plant undergoes mainly sexual reproduction (Hicks, 17, Mason, 157). Lemna's optimal growth occurs in temperatures between 0-0°C and the plant can survive in the pH range of .5-8.5 (Hillman, 161).

All plants need nutrients to survive, some nutrients in greater concentrations than others. A nutrient is, a specific substance required by an organism that must be obtained from its surrounding environment (Knox et al. - 1 author, 001). Nitrogen and phosphorus are the major nutrients required for growth. Along with potassium, these macro-nutrients are those which are required in the greatest quantities (Hillman, 161). These are used to synthesize proteins, auxins and other plant hormones as well as in the creation of DNA and the cell membrane (Colmer, personal communication, 00). The nutrients required in smaller amounts, i.e. the micro-nutrients include; iron, copper, zinc, bromide, gallium, nickel, chloride, manganese, sulfur, molybdenum and boron. These are also necessary for plant growth and cell maintenance (Steinberg, 146).

Section -1 Review

1. What observations were used to develop the cell theory?

• German botanist, Schleiden cells compose not only the stems and roots but every part of a plant

• German zoologist, Schwann - made same claim about animals

Custom Essays on Cell Notes

• German physician, Virchow observed that cells come only from other cells

. What function do organelles serve?

• Eukaryotic cells possess organelles

• Their small, specific membrane-bound internal compartments, that carry out specific functions in the cell.

. Explain why cells must be small.

• limits that affect how efficiently cells work and that govern cell size.

• One is related to the exchange between the inside and the outside of the cell.

- All info and materials entering or leaving the cell must pass through

"doors" in the cell membrane. The efficiency of this exchange depends on the ratio of the cell's surface area to its volume.

- Large cells have far less membrane surface per unit of volume with which

to supply materials to the cells interior and to rid it of wastes.

• The other reason is that as the cell size increases, it takes longer for information and materials to reach their destination.

• SMALL CELLS ARE MORE EFFICIENT THAN LARGER CELLS.

4. Explain prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

• Prokaryotic cells are single-celled organisms that lack internal membrane-bound compartments.

• Eukaryotic cells are complex cells that have a nucleus and organelles,

• Bacteria is the only prokaryote, all other living cells are eukaryotes.

• Many biologists think that eukaryotes evolved from prokaryotes.

5. The three parts of the cell theory

• All living things are composed of one or more cells.

• In organisms, cells are the basic units of structure and function.

• Cells are produced only from existing cells.

I think that preventive detention is a good plan to keep criminals off the streets. People may argue that it is unfair to keep some one in prison not for a crime but for things they might do when they get out. For example, Lets say that there is a prisoner in jail who is a career inmate. He has been in and out of jail for raping young women. He is a threat to society he should be kept in prison so that he doesn't hurt anyone else. If he was to be sent back out into society excuse my French but he should be castrated so that he couldn't rape young women anymore. Along with this he should be examined psychologically too see if he could even function in society. The way that I see career criminals is like a dog once it gets the taste of blood from a chicken it can never go back and it will always be craving the blood from a chicken.

If a person is caught and it is his multiple time being convicted of drug trafficking even though he has no past history of violence he should still be put in preventive detention because with him locked up that would be one less drug trafficker out on the street, in result less drugs on the streets. I think that a person who is just exposing himself to women not causing harm to them is not really a risk to society. So what he likes to show off a little bit as long as he's not hurting any one "streak on". Some one who is convicted of multiple white-collar crimes such as cheating on their income taxes, he is not really hurting society he's just sticking it to Uncle Sam. The IRS should keep him under close surveillance and not keep him locked up in jail.

My whole view on preventive detention is if you are harming society you should be put in jail and have them throw away the key. But if you are in there for non harmful activity you should be released but still be under close supervision.

weather it be stoning shooting or hanging.

Bullying is more than just a part of growing up. It is a form of aggressive or violent behavior shown to children who are quieter, shyer, or less outgoing than the bully. Bullies are concerned only with their needs, and are willing to use other children to get what they want. Adults know this behavior is unacceptable, but often don't know when they should step in and take action, if at all. Important factors to consider before making an action are how an adult feels about handling the situation, and how a child or teenager feels about having an elder stick up for them.

But if a child is being bullied, what should the parent do to help them? They can listen to them and encourage them to talk freely about their problems. Don't dismiss any important complaints they have about bullies. By helping the child learn social skills, the adult is making it easier for them to make friends instead of enemies. A parent can teach their child ways to resolve arguments without violent words or actions. "If my child was being bullied, I would arrange a conference with the school, myself, my child, the bully, and his mother or father. We would come to some sort of resolution to the problem," says Barbara Fry.

But a child or a teenager must have a say in what they would like to do about resolving the problem of bullying. "If I was being bullied, I would want my mommy to stick up for me," says year-old Kelsey Lauerer. Most children would like an elder to be there to support and defend them. However, the same issue with teenagers must differ. Sam Zammit, age 15 says, "If some other kid was bullying me I would find a way to handle it myself. I wouldn't want my parents or another person older than me to do something about it, unless I couldn't take care of it myself."

Be aware of symptoms that children may be victims of a bully. A drop in grades, torn clothes, or needing more money for lunch may be indicative of this. Victims of bullying behavior are most likely targeted because of emotional conduct more than physical traits. Typical victims tend to be timid, bashful, and lacking confidence in themselves. If an adult knows their child is being abused at school, they should contact the principal or person in charge immediately. Having a number of people aware of the problem will push along the attempt to fix it.
