Teleological Argument

(Argument from Design)

"How far you think the Design Argument can be used to prove the existence of God."

The teleological argument is often used as the clearest and simplest of the arguments for the existence, which are its main attractions. Most of its popularity is due to the late eighteenth century English theologian William Paley, who argued that although we may find nothing in and about a stone that necessarily suggested to us that it was fashioned (designed) by an intelligent being, if we were to find a watch in an isolated place we noticing just how well its various parts fitted together in order to give us the correct time, we couldnt but help think that it was the product of an intelligent designer. Paley observed the world (universe) is far more complex than any watch, and it certainly exhibits order. How can we not, Paley asks, believe that it, the world, is the product of an intelligent designer?

The Eighteenth Century Scottish philosopher David Hume, undertakes a comprehensive critique of this argument; and most philosophers today are in agreement that the argument cannot withstand or recover from Humes onslaught.

The argument is quite flawed in a number of ways.

1. It seriously confuses purpose and adaptation. When the argument crucially compares the world with a machine, it is, in effect, comparing an artefact with a natural object. It correctly observes that in both cases we are confronted with something which is not only quite complex, but, importantly, performs a job quite perfectly. In the case of the machine, however, its performing of a job is the fulfilling of the purpose of its designer. In the case of, for example, the human eye, it performs a role, namely, facilitating visual perception, because the organism has developed in that way.

. Of course, if it is assumed at the outset that the universe has a purpose, then, since it is reasonable to believe that if something has a purpose then it is someones or somethings purpose, the question has been begged at the very beginning. The point is this The Design Argument cannot be an argument from design; but rather, has to be an argument to design. If it were the former, then the existence of a Designer of the universe would have been assumed, and, consequently, there would have been no need for the argument. But, if its the latter, then the differences between purpose and adaptation have been obliterated. These can be obliterated only if it is assumed that everything has a purpose; in which case, the argument is really only a disguised version of the question-begging argument from design.

. A good deal of the psychological potency of the argument, as it is usually presented, is derived from the observation that the universe (and of course even small parts of it; such as the leaf of a tree or the human eye) is an enormously complex, but marvellously functioning thing. In effect, the suggestion is that the order in the universe is an adequate indicator of there being or having been an Orderer of the universe. But this is, as it were, logically unnecessary overkill. The argument could have proceeded as it does no matter how the universe actually is. That is, it is we who, when thinking about things, and in terms of our needs and interests, order the universe.

The teleological argument on close examination is not strong enough to support the existence of God, as on closer analysis simply falls apart. Please note that this sample paper on Teleological is for your review only. In Literature, authors have the ability to convey very meaningful messages through certain moods and with the use of literary elements. In Macbeth, a Shakespearean play, anger, fear, and cruelty seemed to have been evident in the hearts of many characters. The reader can immediately feel the tension and the anxiety of the characters in the beginning. As for the short story, "One Autumn Night, " by Maxim Gorky, the mood portrayed was more thankful and glad to have life- rather than dreary, hateful and sorrowful. The contrast of the two works is as follows; the author's intentional mood in Macbeth for the soliloquy in Act V, scene five in the play was contrition, bitterness and malevolence. It showed deepness, a sorrowful outlook on human existence. In the short story the author portrayed through their characters' moods, a more uplifting mood, and a more valuable outlook on life. In these literary works the moods are in contrast of one another as they show very different outlooks on similar, sorrowful situations.

William Shakespeare gave a very unique tone to the play- in the soliloquy of Macbeth, his own misfortune of the death of his wife lead him to almost insult the entire human race. As he stated " Out, out brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow . . . " his portrayal of the human race is that of senselessness, and absurdity. Shakespeare used a very persuasive mood to convey the deep feelings of Macbeth. Macbeth's own turmoil turned his faith in life upside down to the point where he no longer believed in the actual meaning of life. " . . . a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage then is heard no more . . ." This is an example of the feelings evident in Macbeth after his wife died. His feeling now is that life just doesn't matter- nothing matters. His wife is dead. This dreadful and dispirited mood projected through one single speech was a very important literary point in the play.

In " One Autumn Night", on the other hand, the author shows a more thankful and innocent mood portrayed by the narrator. Even though the narrator was alone and penniless, he found warmth and fulfillment within a kind soul. Only a chance meeting- in an unfamiliar place with so little that all the characters had was the warmth of eachother. Imagery gave the reader the ability to understand what the characters were going through and where they were. That made it more unbelievable that in the end of the story the narrator made such a terrible time in life sound almost like a blessing as he blessed the person who helped and comforted him during his time of sorrow and need. Again the mood portrayed by the author gave insight as to what and why the characters were feeling and how difficult it must have been to maintain a peace within themselves and still reach out to help a fellow human being in need.

There is an evident contrast between the two literary works. In Macbeth, the mood throughout was drastic, and sorrowful, and showed clearly the afflictions of the characters. In " One Autumn Night", however, eventhough the characters were desperate, cold, and weak, they still managed to see eachother through a very difficult time in both of their lives, and share within them a kindness- sought after by no one but given freely.

The advertising world is constantly finding ways to persuade people into buying products. One of their most common tools is language technique. Looking in particular at beauty products for women, I set out to prove that the different types of language techniques used are set out to persuade women into buying the product by means of making the women believe that it will do more than just improve their looks. As the subject of my research is on products for women, I used women's magazines and the Internet as my main source of information.

There are several ways in which companies and advertising firms use language to persuade people to buy their product. The first technique is the use of imperatives. An Imperative is defined as a command that intends to induce the consumer into some form of action. An example of an imperative is the slogan used by Schwarzkoph, "professional hair-care that you must have! ". This slogan informs the consumer that the company understands the importance not only to the quality of their product, but to the customer's personal satisfaction. Imperatives are one of the most common language techniques in adverts for selling products to women.

Another advert that I examined was of a shampoo called "Herbal Essences". The name suggests that's the shampoo contains lots of different natural essences. One of the slogans used in the advertisement is "a totally organic experience". I believe that this was chosen due to its sensational meaning and sexual connotations. The word 'organic' is used to remind the consumer that natural herbs and botanicals are used. The words "yes! yes! yes!" are also used and are in a very large and bold font. These are introduced to try and describe what the user might say whilst washing their hair. The words start in a light shade and increase in size and boldness, which suggests the increase in pleasure as you shampoo. Another slogan used in the advert is "start an affair with your hair" which rhymes. This also uses alliteration wit 'an affair' and by putting this with the rest of the slogan 'with your hair' which nicely flows when reading it. These words are suggestive and might invite the consumer to introduce some excitement into their lives by using the shampoo. The advertisement has tried to create a natural image with the use of language techniques whilst also suggesting excitement and fun. This is achieved by using several different slogans that appeal to women.

Similar to this, is an advertisement for a new hair colour for women made by 'Garnier' called Lumia, which I had found in the magazine "Women's Day". The language technique used here is an acronym, where Lumia is short for the word illuminate. The slogan used in the advert says, "turn your hair on, to light-reflecting colour with Lumia". This is a metaphor and suggests that your hair is a 'light' and that the switch to turn it on is the product. The advert also positive connotations and superlatives to make the product sound more enticing. For example "it's like sunlight rippling through your hair, giving beautiful contrasts". Personal pronouns are also commonly used to make the consumer feel safe about the product. "Trust your hair colour with the experts" is written under the company name and suggests that it is a professional company in hair products for women. Again the advertisement tries to persuade the consumer in buying their product by use of language techniques.

Buy custom ADVERTISING ESSAY term paper

In conclusion, I've found out that the uses of language techniques in adverts to sell products are very effective because they play on the consumer's subconscious image of how they see themselves, and tap into the aspect of the audience's lifestyle.

Marketing is the major factor in the success of any business Discuss

In this essay I will be exploring the many factors that go into the success of any business, and finding out if marketing, is in fact, the major factor, or just a minor one of many. I will closely examine each factor and find the strengths and weakness' of them.

Marketing defined - Marketing is essentially about marshalling the resources of an organisation so that they meet the changing needs of customers on whom the organisation depends. As a verb, marketing is

all about how an organisation addresses its markets. The Chartered Institute of Marketing provides a typical definition of marketing

Marketing can be seen as the major factor in a company because it's what gets it recognised by the public. Without marketing a company would have no recognition, therefore no customers or profits, but this is not the only thing that can effect a business. Without and money in a firm to begin with, there would be no firm. There would be no money to build a premises for a firm, no building materials and no money to market their business/product.

The factors in any business also depend on firm's objectives. A firm must decide whether it is to go in the public of private sector and whether it is to be a nationalised firm, or a local business. A local business would have to deal with much competition, and try and get their firm as widely recognised as possible, and gain a good reputation in the type of market it is in.

The size of a business effects the type and size of marketing required. A multinational company such as Mars would depend on marketing much more than a small firm. If Mars markets a product incorrectly, and doesn't appeal to the right audience, that will effect the profit and success of that, and could prove a huge loss for them.

One major factor is the quality of a product, if a product doesn't meet the right standards, this will effect the entire business and gain the firm a bad reputation. It could also land the firm in trouble with the trading standards agency, which would gain a lot of bad publicity. A quality product is defined as

Quality is defined as fit for purpose and as such is not an abstract standard of cosmetic appearance or ability. A quality product is not one that has been over specified nor over engineered for a particular application. A company that offers a standard product needs a system to ensure the product meets the standard specifications.

A company must do market research before they start a marketing campaign. This can be done in the form of questionnaires, a focus group, or using secondary sources of information to find a general trend in a market etc. The company can then decide on the type of marketing that they wish to pursue .

They must also decide on a price for the service they are charging or their product, if this is priced too high, the company may not gain any customers and will go into recession. They must also ensure that they're staff are being paid correctly, and are being treated right, if not this may lead to strikes in the company and possible lawsuits.

In all, I believe that marketing is possibly the major factor in the success of a business, but it takes many of the other factors to contribute to it, because without the other factors, there would be no business or product to market in the first place.

Please note that this sample paper on Marketing is the major factor in the success of any business – Discuss is for your review only. Have you ever believed in something that others didnt? Maybe for certain reasons you didnt do things because you thought they were something more than what they seemed. This was a superstition that you believed in. For example, maybe you felt you couldnt break a mirror because it would give you seven years of bad luck. The superstitions in Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain include things that bring bad luck, beliefs that bring you good luck and things that ward off witches, and since Huck believed that everything happened for a reason; the superstitions and the coincidences that followed them makes you believe.

There were many superstitions involving bad luck in this story. Most of these superstitions Huck believed in greatly I reached for some as quick as I could, to throw over my left shoulder and deep off the bad luck (1.) This happened after Huck spilled salt at breakfast. Throwing spilled salt over the left shoulder after spilling was thought to avert any impending disaster. This may have had its origins in the belief that if you are pursued by something evil, throwing salt behind you into his its eyes will save you from your fate. Since Huck didnt have the chance to throw the salt over his shoulder he knew bad luck was just around the corner. The next day Huck spots his fathers shoe print in the snow, which could not bring any good news to him.

Good luck was also present. Although Huck and Jim did not run into very often at all. Jim believed that he had the power to cure anybody with his five center piece around his neck. It was a charm the devil give to him with his own hands and told him he could cure anybody with it and fetch witches whenever he wanted to (.) The Voodoo beliefs claimed that if you were to meet the devil and he gave you an article you had the power to cure people. Jim used this to help the other slaves and he was talked about. This shows that Jim likes attention and will do anything to get it. If he feels he is doing something good for someone then he is happy.

Huck and Jim were not the only ones that were superstitious. Though they were the two that were the most, Hucks father, Pap was also superstitious. He would wear a cross in the heel of his boot to ward of the devil. There was cross in the left boot-hell made with big nails, to keep off the devil (0.) Since Pap believed in superstitions in probably rubbed off on Huck. By keeping the cross the devil couldnt get to him. The devil and witches were feared of because they would take your soul. Even though Huck didnt like to go to church he knew that if he didnt have a soul he wouldnt be a person.

Since Huck and Jim believed in superstitions heavily they could relate to each other. Although they disagreed on some of each other beliefs, they both agreed on the fact that bad and good luck was caused all for a reason and not just by coincidence. This all adds to the characters. We get to see what each one believes in and how they live their lives around them. This all helps to get inside of the persons head and helps the progress of the story.

No boasting like a fool;" Act IV Scene I Line 150-154.

Though his ambition causes him to do many evil things, he would not have had the confidence to even start all of this without his wife pushing him to keep him ambitious. "Lady MacBeth says Great Glamis! Worthy Cawdor! /Greater than both, by the all-hail hereafter." Act I Scene 5 Line 5-54. Oedipus And Agamemnon

There were many leaders in the time of the Greeks. But there were two that stood out from others. Agamemnon and Oedipus were two very alike yet different leaders of their time.

Agamemnon was the leader of the Achaens, a huge army of the Greek times. While he was a good leader in many ways, he was far from perfection. Oedipus was born of a king, but he did not inherit the throne. He was sent away from his father as a baby. Instead, he solved a riddle and won the throne of Thebes and a beautiful queen as his wife. Through their leadership, they both encountered plagues from the gods. While Agamemnon was a greedy, selfish man, he never thought of his troops dieing through this time of hardship. On the other hand Oedipus thought of this people all the time, and how he could help them to get through the plague easier. But he could never settle for less than perfect.

In order to please the gods and stop the plagues Agamemnon and Oedipus both took a similar approach. They both made their number one priority to figure out the causes of the plagues. But when finding out the causes acted strangely different. When Agamemnon found that in order to please the gods he had to give back his prize, Chrisies, being selfish, he took no more actions to stop the plague. Later he did think of the troops and stopped the plague but still not without getting another prize in return. Oedipus on the other hand, when finding out that the cause of his plague was something that he had done and not being able to face his people, he banished himself from his city and fled to the mountains awaiting his death. Leaving his city without a ruler.

Agamemnon and Oedipus were Greek leaders who had many of the same qualities, both good and bad. No two people are alike. Everyone has there own uniqueness that is what makes the people of the world who they are today.
