There was a small Italian Greyhound born in a Missouri puppy mill. It seemed as if this dog was doomed to live and die in her small wire cage. She was bred every heat cycle and her puppies kept coming, year after year after year. When she had her final liter at nine years old, she was sent to auction. Because she was considered useless to other puppy millers, no one would buy her. She was to be destroyed as soon as the auction was over. Luckily, an all-breed rescue person noticed her and bought her for fifty dollars. She was soon named Addie. Addie was ten years old and walked with difficulty. She had no muscle tone or coordination because she did not have the opportunity or the need to develop any in the cage in which she lived. She had gum and sinus infections from years of poor nutrition and dental neglect; twelve of her remaining fourteen teeth had to be extracted. She had a variety of intestinal parasites and mammary tumors that had to be removed. Also, her ribs were permanently dislocated from repeatedly carrying large litters. At one point, she had to pull off one of her own toes to free her foot from the wire grid floor of her cage, and during one or more of the sub-zero winters she had survived, she had lost the tips of both her ears to frostbite. She was adopted to a very loving family and she gradually regained her health. Unfortunately, there are many, many more puppy mill breeding dogs that never get the chance that Addie did. So, when you buy that cute, little puppy from the pet shop, do you really know where it was raised? There are several reasons why you should not buy puppies from pet shops. Many pet owners have no idea where their pet store puppy started its life. The truth is that it probably came from a puppy mill. You should not buy puppies from pet stores because of the deplorable conditions that many puppy mills have. A puppy mill is a place where several breeds of dogs are raised and the breeder always has puppies for sale. It is usually a dirty place where dogs are mass produced. The breeding dogs are kept in cages their entire lives and careless breeding is common. Many of the dogs have serious health problems such as mange, a rampant skin infection, food infested with maggots, and disturbing behavior often caused by confinement. Many also live in cramped cages, with little attention, no socializing, and at times go without food and/or water, and do not receive proper health care. There are three degrees of bad conditions; bad, worse, worst. In bad conditions the dogs are in terrible health condition, they have food and water, and have fairly new cages. In worse conditions the dogs are left out in the cold, and they walk on uncoated wire. In the worst condition conditions are horrible, the dogs are in small cages with bare wire, and the cages were falling apart. Another reason why you should not buy a puppy from a puppy mill is because not only are the breeders in bad health, but they can also pass it on to their puppies. The puppies are sold with no visible health problems, but, as they grow, so too can these problems. Many will get sick and die. Some will be shy and/or aggressive, either untrained or over trained, and the hereditary diseases they can carry can be a lot of money to the pet owner. Each litter is usually taken from their mother at no later than five weeks old when it is recommended that the puppies stay with their mother for up to eight weeks. The puppies are then loaded onto trucks with hundreds of other young puppies. They are dropped off at pet stores all across the country and it has been estimated that about 10% of the puppies transported to pet stores, die along the way. You should also not buy puppies from pet stores because, if you care enough about animals, you should be adopting one from an animal shelter instead. Not only will it be helping to put a stop to puppy mills, but at the same time, you will be fighting the pet overpopulation problem. Millions of homeless dogs are waiting at animal shelters for life-long, responsible homes. The animal shelter can help you locate a specific breed if you want also, since 5% of animals in shelters are pure breed. Adoption can also match the owners lifestyle and habits with the animals needs and characteristics. There are several reasons why you should not buy puppies from pet stores. The puppies in the window may seem just what you are looking for, but you now know the truth behind it. Hopefully, Addies story will inspire you to think twice before buying a dog that may have come from a puppy mill. www.Yahoo.com

Time and time again I read that teen preganacy is a problem, however I believe that society needs to find soulitions with out abortion invole. Society should focus on postive solutions and assitants education wise, child care and job skills for teen parents encourging postive outlook in teen parents and their child future, keeping in mind grandparents and great grandparents married and had their children at a very young age, the divorce rate than was very low.

I feel that their was less aborton and divorce in our grandparents era because your parents encourage you to take respondsiblities for their actions and put more effort into marriage instead of using teen preganacy as in excuss to fail.

In my opinion society needs to stop reminding us about the teen preganacy problem and focus on the solutions as weel as the possiblities for a sucessful life.

Statics show a teenage girl is ten times more likely to attempt sucide if she has had an abortion in the last six months than is a comparable teenage girl who has not had an abortion, physical and emotional damage from abortion is greater in a young girl. They have immature cervixes and run the risk of a difficult, potentially traumatic dilataion. Among teenagers who aborted their first pregnancies, 66% subsequently experienced miscarriages or premature birth on their secound, wanted baby. Half of teenage abortion patients studied suffered a worsening of physocial functioning within seven months after the abortion.Symptoms included self reproach, depression, social regression, withdrawl, obesession with the need to become pregnant again and hasty marriages.Abortion is the ending of pregnancy before birth and is morally wrong. An abortion results in the death of an embryo or a foetus. Abortion destroys the lives of helpless, innocent children and illegal in many countries. By aborting these unborn infants, humans are hurting themselves.

- Huckleberry Finn Writing Task -

The most important section of Mark Twain's novel, Huckleberry Finn, is the chapters devoted to the voyage on the raft. Both Huck and Jim forget themselves during the voyage, and are swept away by nature. During this section, Twain shows how people can live together in harmony, but this harmony is rare and far spaced. Huck and Jim are constantly returning to society on the shore, and society intrudes on them occasionally, and this shows that one cannot escape from society forever; it will always return. 'Civilised' society on the shore shows us hypocrisy, cruelty and violence, while the life on the raft contrasts to a great extent as a simple way of life, and much more civilised in comparison, though dangerous at the best of times. These are the main concerns of the novel, and therefore, collectively, are a major theme.

Huck and Jim are swept away by the rhythms of nature while on the raft, forgetting racial and age difference & discussing things such as why Frenchman don't speak the same language (Chapter 14) & how they will know when they get to Cairo (Chapter 16). During these lengthy conversations, both forget racial hierarchy and age difference, speaking together like any two men. "It made me feel so mean I could almost kissed his foot to get him to take it back." This shows how Huck forgets that Jim is different, not an equal by society's standards. This has major significance in comparison to the way that blacks and children are treated on shore. No child and black slave would even consider having this sort of conversation on shore, nor would a child kiss a blacks foot no matter how much hurt he may have done, and this is why this situation is so unique. When they are isolated, these true friendships can develop unjudged by society.

Huck and Jim are constantly drawn back to the shore, as shown in Chapters 10, 17, 1, 4 and . Society also intrudes on them, and this is shown in Chapters 1, 16 and 1. This is proof as to how one cannot escape from society entirely. Huck and Jim continue to re-enter society through feuds intruding on the river, scouting for adventures, and people who they must follow back to society, due to the web of lies Huck has created. If they were not to follow these people, the people would discover them for who they were, forcing them back on the run, revealing neither were dead, and taking away their freedom created by their deaths. Society intrudes on them through the King and the Duke, the bandits on the crashed steamboat, and the men who think Jim has smallpox. Each time society meets Huck and the raft, Huck is forced to lie to keep Jim from being caught, and this is yet another bond Huck and Jim create after their time together on the raft.

Cheap University Papers on Huckleberry Finn

The society on the shore sees themselves as civilised, criticising and trying to civilise those they believe are not civilised. In actual fact, they live in the hypocritical society who has birthed Huck. This is shown in Chapter 18 when the Shepherdsons and the Grangerfords go to church with their guns by their side, while the preacher talks of "brotherly love and such-like tiresomeness". The families believe it to be a good service, and they speak of it all the way home, but Huck has just become more confused about the whole matter. Huck's father and the King & the Duke are the central characters who show cruelty and violence. Pap shows it through his tanning of Huck, using Huck to get money and restraining him like a captive in the cottage, and the King and Duke through their typical, harsh treatment of Jim, and their act of selling him even though he doesn't belong to anyone. Other cruel characters include the bandits on the crashed steamboat, threatening to kill the man they hold captive. These men, along with Pap, the King and the Duke, are eventually caught and punished, but even then Huck still has feeling of guilt over running off without them, or turning them in to the Sheriff - "I felt a little bit heavyhearted about the gang, but not much, for I reckoned if they could stand it, I could."

Overall we find that the 'civilised' society on shore, and those who come on to the raft from it, is really a cruel, hypocritical and uncivilised society, from which Huck and Jim continue to break away from. Huck and Jim take on their false identities while on shore, which contrasts to a great extent with their truthful and uncovered nature shown on the raft. This contrast does embody a theme of the novel, the theme centred around truth, and the corruption of the society on shore.

DANIELLE It all started one day close to the end of my junior year in high school. I sat close to the back of the room in my Geometry class so not to be bothered. About three minutes after the late bell had rang someone walked through the door. At first I did not recognize her, but when she turned around I knew whom she was. Her name was Erin Danielle Wiley, and somehow she was different. She still had the same soft red hair, and the same dark green eyes. I found myself starring at her intensely. Once she noticed that I was starring at her she turned with a bewildered look on her face, and asked me what I was doing. I came out of my daze and, said sorry. We started talking a bit and, before I knew it we were together all of the time.

Our relationship started from there. We were never separated the whole summer. Every day we went fishing, swimming, or just hung out. One evening while sitting at my house watching television when Danielle looked at me very seriously, and asked me "could you see us spending the rest of our lives together"? There was a long silence before realizing that she was serious. I tried to answer her honestly, and with a regretful tone said "most high school loves don't last, but I hope I'm wrong". With that said that was all I thought about for the next few days. One night lying in bed I asked her if she remembered what she asked me, she said "yes, why". I simply said, "Yes I could see us spending the rest of our lives together. That was the first night we were ever intimate.

After the summer when school started back I was a senior and Danielle was a junior. We loved each other as much as ever if not more. A particular turn of events made us decide to see what it would be like to be apart. Needless to say it only lasted for about half a day.

On Sunday Sep. , 01 I had just gotten off of work when my phone rang. It was Danielle seeing if I was going to make it to her house that evening. I sighed, and said that I was pretty tired she said "that's all right I'll come see you". So Danielle came over, and we watched a few movies. Afterwards we sat, and talked for a while. It was almost as a tear came to her eye when she took my ring off of her finger and gave it back to me. She said that it was hurting her finger and that I should take it back for a while, and then calmly said it was time to go. We said we loved each other and kissed goodbye.

The very next day Sep.10, 01 started as a normal day. My little sister woke me up, and got me dressed then I drove her to school. I walked towards Danielle's locker, but could see that she had not med it to school yet. Her best friend, "Leah" was talking seriously to some of her other friends. When I made it over their Leah said four words that are burnt into my memory "Danielle had a wreck". My ears went def to all of the noise around me. We ran to my truck jumped in and never looked back. As soon as we pulled out of the parking lot we could see blue lights flashing all around us. We pulled near the wreck and the front end of her car was gone. It felt like a bad dream that I could not wake up from. As we got out of the vehicle I could see the EMT's hovered around someone. Then I saw her lying on the ground beside the road.

I knelt down beside her and felt the glass crunch, and stab in me, yet I never flinched. When I took her hand she opened her eyes, and tried to sit up. I placed my hand on her shoulder, and told her to be still, and that I loved her. From that moment Danielle never moved again. I sat back, put my blood-covered hands over my face, and started to cry. The ambulance came and picked her up and rushed her to the ER.

One the way to the hospital we turned on the radio and Danielle's favorite song had just started playing, outside by Stained. When I looked at the clock it said 11 a.m. After reaching the hospital I spoke with her mother and she said she "didn't make it". I made them take me inside to say a few final words. I told her that I loved her and always will.

Two days later we had the burial. Afterwards I went to Danielle's house, sat in her room and looked around. Her mother came in to comfort me, and told me something I will never forget. She said that "God must have needed another angle for September 11" I just happened to be holding the death certificate, and it said "borne March , 84"and " died September 10, 01 at 11 am.

Danielle was the love of my life but I guess someone needed her a little more than me. Please note that this sample paper on danielle is for your review only. Commentary Passage 1

The passage ¡§The Open Book¡¨ talks about how a group of men, isolated on a boat at least 0 miles from the closest shoreline, fight for survival.

Though in my opinion, stories about survival are always frantic and tense, this passage seems to be an exception. I think the author of this story is not trying to show how men fought against roaring waves in the sea, but rather to bring out what co-operation and teamwork can do in our lives.

Through out the passage, the crews on the boat often say things together ¡§¡¥Funny they don¡¦t see us,¡¦ said the men.¡¨ From the word ¡§men¡¨, we can assume that their opinions are often alike. The fact that they are at least 0 miles away from the closest life-saving station brings reader the question why none of them even suspect that they are too far to be seen. This shows that the characters often have the same belief, even if the belief is wrong. It also shows us that the story is unrealistic

Cheap Custom Essays on The Open Book

Although the people on the boat are in danger, the author gives us the idea that their minds are crystal clear, hence, unafraid of mighty surf. The way the author describes the waves are a bit ironic ¡§ the roar of the surf was plain,¡¨ here, roar suggests that winds are blowing from different directions; yet, the word ¡§plain¡¨ brings in the image that everything is claim and normal. Maybe the author is trying to tell us that the sea itself is roaring with thunder, but on the boat, people¡¦s mind are confident and sturdy. Though they lack the skills to control the boat ¡§ to their sharpened minds it was easy to conjure pictures of all kinds of incompetency,¡¨ they still have their ¡§sharpened minds¡¨ to bring them through the danger. Often in a tense situation, people are often perplexed, and once that happens, everything starts going into disorder. However, these crews were still able to keep a sharp focus on what they were doing, compensating for their lack of incompetence. During their process of thinking, they formulated things in their head such as ¡§ But no, she cannot drown me,¡¨ these lines play an important role as it shows their determination to survive. In this way, ¡§this oiler, by a series of quick miracles, and fast and steady oarsman ship¡Ktook her safely to sea again.¡¨ The word ¡§miracle¡¨ suggests that as if they have achieved something that that no human being has done before.

The captain plays a crucial role in this passage. Though all the other crews seem to be calm, they are not able to finalise a single decision. This is what the captin does, with the co-operation of his crews, he made a finalised decision which no one objected to and brought them to safety.

In the sea, thunderous waves are moving rapidly to and fro, which shows that it is lively and moving. Comparing with the land ¡§ It was of dunes topped with dark vegetation¡¨, where it shows almost no life at all. The sea is full of water, while the land is dried as a dessert. ¡§Dark vegetation¡¨ suggests that they are shriveled, unlike colourful fruits you would expect in a tropical rain forest. People rarely eat withered crops, thus, it suggest that it is a place that has been abandoned for quite a while. A lighthouse is supposed to guide ships and to prevent them from hitting rocks, therefore, they should be bright. However, the lighthouse does not seem to serve its purpose ¡§the slim lighthouse lifted its little grey length,¡¨ grey suggest death and again, it tells us that there is not much life on land. The crews always say¡¨ ¡§Funny they don¡¦t see us,¡¨ maybe there is no one in the lighthouse at all with the scenario the author gives us of the land.

The author chose a narrative voice to write this passage. I suppose he did this to show individual thoughts of the crews. This will give us a clear view of what individual thinks. In this way, he could put unbiased opinions in between since a line might be perceived in dissimilar ways coming out of the mouth of two different characters. For example, the crews believed that the lighthouse was nearby, and we would not know that it was actually more than 0 miles away if there was no narrator.

As many points an ordinary survival story would have which in this story is obscure, such as is there anyone in the light house? I think they main objective of this story is not concentrated on the process of survival, but the conversation and contemplation of the crews on the boat. Maybe that is why the title is called ¡§The Open Boat¡¨, as if the reader overlooks the boat clearly and openly.

Part of what makes every person unique is a personality that consists of both strengths and weaknesses. My personal strengths are having a good sense of humor, taking responsibility for my actions, ability to be trained quickly, and finding the most efficient way to execute a process. My weaknesses consist of having a lack of discipline to complete undesirable tasks, procrastination, punctuality, and introversion. I also tend to be very critical of myself and others, and have little patience for the intellectually challenged.

I believe that finding the humor in any situation is my key to maintaining a positive attitude. Having a good sense of humor is very important and helps me deal with life's day-to-day stresses. I enjoy an open banter with close friends and making fun of their decisions which, in hindsight, were found to be unwise. In addition, I can also laugh about something absurd that I did.

It is important that I take responsibility for my decisions and actions. More often, it seems that people are not held accountable. Society, in general, seems to be tolerant of excuses and reasons why a person should not be blamed. If I made a mistake, I am able to accept the consequences of my actions.

Learning how to do things has always come easily to me. Once I have been shown how to operate something or what process to follow, I am able to repeat it correctly. As a child I effortlessly learned how to play several instruments; the piano, saxophone and flute. As an adult, I quickly learn new processes taught at work and often assist the training team as they help others become knowledgeable. I hope to maintain my effortless ability to learn as I continue through school.

Help with essay on My personal strengths and weaknesses

Although laziness is commonly viewed as a weakness by most people, it is how I like to define my next strength. Because I am lazy, I want to do the least amount of work possible in order to complete a task. For example, when I am given an assignment to complete at work, I will find the quickest and easiest way without compromising the quality or accuracy.

My lack of discipline often causes me to procrastinate with getting things done. If I know something can be accomplished on another day then I will wait. This weakness has caused me to rush around at the last minute to get things done. Often, I get frustrated with myself for not starting sooner, but procrastinating continues to be a challenge.

This weakness also leads to my inability to be punctual. I am frequently late to many functions because I do not leave myself enough time to prepare. Luckily, I have close friends who are tolerant and continue to include me on their invitations. At times, I paid the consequences for being late; doctors' appointments had to be rescheduled and opportunities were missed.

Because one of my weaknesses is being an introvert, I am often viewed as snobbish and boring. This makes it difficult for most people to relate to me and makes in harder for me to make acquaintances. I look forward to working in teams at school to help me overcome this obstacle. As I spend more time with someone, I get more relaxed around that person and become more outgoing. I am thankful to have a small group of close friends with whom I am very comfortable.

My belief that we are responsible for our own actions causes me to be very critical of myself and others. Often, I have questioned my decisions and wondered if I made the best choice. I have little compassion for people who are in a predicament as a result of making a bad decision. A friend of mine handled her finances poorly and as a result, she filed bankruptcy. When she asked me for a loan, the decision was difficult because of my criticism of her irresponsibility.

It is difficult for me to maintain a patient demeanor with people who need more guidance than I feel is necessary. As a person who learns things quickly, it is often challenging to empathize with someone who needs more time or explanation to understand a concept or function. When I am at work teaching or coaching, I focus on maintaining a positive demeanor and not showing my frustration.

These attributes are a result of outside influences and life experiences. By recognizing my weaknesses, I am able to take the following steps towards making progress in order to avoid procrastinating, I have begun utilizing my planner to schedule my time wisely; whenever I find myself being critical, I remind myself that I am in no position to be judgmental; and when I catch myself being reclusive, I remind myself to not be afraid of making a stupid comment. What one person considers a strength could be viewed by another as a weakness. From looking for a potential employee or employer to finding a companion or peer group, knowing and understanding yourself and others has many benefits.

Please note that this sample paper on My personal strengths and weaknesses is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on My personal strengths and weaknesses, we are here to assist you. Research has become a major factor in my life both on the job and at school. The first college experience I had was in 18 at DeVry Institute of Technology. It was imperative in the college life to utilize all the resources available in order to succeed. At this point in time, a person begins to understand and use the research tools available such as the Internet, periodicals, journals, etc. The first papers presented to me were the worst in regards to getting to know how to use the library and Internet. I had never been exposed to this level of research in high school. The struggle was great and the feeling of defeat was really weighing because of the lack of knowledge. Throughout the time spent at DeVry, my researching skills advanced. Learning how to spend quality time on the given topic has developed a personal style for me. The process has familiarize me with the library and all of the many resources available, various Internet sites such as websites dealing with writing styles, online business information, surveys available for various topics. I must admit the key words are discipline and the desire to learn.

Life is divided in multiple sections for me such as church, personal goals and job. Let's began with church. I work as the church secretary, which involves a lot of researching. At the current time grant writing is one of the major goals of the organization. The grant writing process is very detailed and time consuming. For instance, developing a plan for a youth development center, research has to be done on the need of this type of organization in the surrounding community. During the process of gathering information the internet was the most widely used tool. The Internet provided all the statistical data on Columbus residents and also information on programs similar to the one planned by our organization. Also utilized was the United Way organization that has a library of books on grant writing and proposal writing.

The personal goal in view is to own my own group home. I have used personal interviews as a major research tool. The target person to interview is a young troubled female who show signs of problematic lifestyles.

Lastly on the list is on the job. I used various databases, web-based software, and books to perform research at work. The tools utilized at work are CIRF, XNET, PROCLAIJM, CED, ICARE, IVIEW and the Internet. CIRF is a database, which includes a collection of documents to help answer customer questions. CIRF is structured in an outline format where you can search for different answers. Working in the insurance field involves so many different scenarios that you have to incorporate a database so that the customer service representative can keep call volume down while answer questions accurately and effectively. XNET is a web-based application that stores all the electrical health claims sent in by providers or members. XNET allows you to look at the actual claim while discussing payment with the provider that is looking for payment or the policyholder of the plan. PROCLAIM is a legacy system, which houses all the eligibility of the policyholders. It allows you to see a list of members under the plan and also allows you to see plan specific information. CED is another legacy system, which also houses eligibility information similar to PROCLAIM. When information is not found in one, it is usually found in the other. ICARE is a graphical user interface that the CED and PROCLAIM uploads eligibility and claim information into. It provides as a call tracking system for customer services representatives. ICARE allows you to see all the previous calls made by the member and the claims that have been paid or denied. Finally, Cigna has a website that serves both members and providers. This website provides them access to claim and eligibility information. Seldom do we use this type of research tool, however it can be helpful.
