Since my time in school I have always known that science and technology was the direction I would take in my studies. It was a fascination that still carries on with me to this day. In my first chemistry class in high school I became conscious of the feeling that chemistry was something I really enjoyed. Since that time I have been down many paths that have led me back to the field of chemistry.

The first chemistry course I took in high school was much like any other class. It was not too involved and was geared toward learning the basics. However, I did well and was given the opportunity to take an AP chemistry course, which I lunged at taking. The instructor, Mr. Miller, tasked us with choosing a topic to research throughout the semester, in addition to regular coursework. This was my first real introduction into research. I enjoyed going to the local universities and spending time looking through all the material.

Additionally, I wanted to be a pilot for the United States Air Force. The appeal of flight to me was great, and I spent much of my time devoted to becoming a pilot. Through much physical and mental preparation I made it into the United States Air Force Academy. My dream of becoming a pilot was well on its way. I had gone through glider training and soloed in my first aircraft. I also still had a fondness for science and opted for the science and engineering track of courses offered at the Academy. However, after two years there I learned that I would not become a pilot after all. My vision was not up to Air Force standards. It was a demoralizing setback, but one I knew I could overcome. I left the Academy and returned to my hometown school, the University of Texas Austin.

My first semester at UTA was a difficult semester during which I did not know what I wanted to do any more. I knew I liked chemistry but I wasnt sure it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The military had taught me to persevere in times of adversity, so I stuck with the chemistry program. The chemistry department at UTA took me in and showed me what chemistry was all about. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time in labs performing experiments and learning the basics of chemistry. However, I needed more than laid out lab experiments from the books. This motivated me to seek an opportunity to perform research with Dr. John Rove. After speaking with him, he offered me a position in his group doing research on decomposition mechanisms of electro-optic dyes. Taking him up on his offer was likely the turning point in my education as an undergraduate chemist. If not for his personal guidance and help, I doubt I would be where I am today a young chemist with motivation and a love for chemistry.

Custom writing service can write essays on Hinduism / Buddhism compare contrast essay

The research I performed involved finding suitable organic dyes for electro-optic modulators. After gaining some experience in the lab and conducting long hours of research, I was able to present my research at American Chemical Society regional and national meetings. Networking with other chemists and seeing their research allowed me to see the full value of the courses Ive taken as an undergraduate. It was also during this time I decided to make chemistry a career.

When I completed my bachelors degree I had a two year commitment in the US Air Force which I am currently close to completing. My time in the Air Force as an intelligence analyst has given me real world experience which I know I will need in the future. Completing tasks while communicating with many different people in extremely time sensitive situations has provided me with skills that no book or classroom can offer.

I think that my coursework and undergraduate research experience at the University of Texas at Austin have provided me with the foundation for further study as a graduate student. While interested in broad ranges of topics in chemistry, I am partial to inorganic and materials chemistry. My next goal is to attain a PhD in chemistry. I know I am ready to put forth the time and effort to obtain this goal.

I believe that the University of Texas at San Antonio has the resources to allow me to accomplish my goals. Perseverance, determination, and hard work are the keys to being a successful graduate student and I am ready and willing to conquer this challenge. These traits will not only help me in my graduate studies but will carry on in my goals to be a successful student and chemist. The Act starts off with John Proctor coming into the house. Once Elizabeth enters, she asks many questions about his whereabouts, suggesting she may be suspicious "What keeps you so late?" is quite an accusative question. When John Proctor talks to her, she keeps giving short answers, e.g. "Aye" and "I am". The abrupt replies make it seem like she does not want to make conversation, and makes her seem cold. When John kisses her, she does nothing. The stage directions in the first scene also makes Elizabeth appear quite distant from her husband, as it says "Her back is turned to him". Miller makes John Proctor try to please his wife, but she doesn't seem to acknowledge it until he actually says "I mean to please you, Elizabeth". However, she does not like to start an argument, as the stage direction says "She doesn't want friction, and yet she must". John tries to please her, but she doesn't seem to acknowledge it until John says "I mean to please you, Elizabeth". Miller makes Elizabeth seem very suspicious of what her husband tells her, and she says "Why, then, it is not as you told me", as if accusing him of lying. Later on, she is quite cold, and says "Do as you wish, then". Miller presents her as someone who finds it hard to forgive and forget peoples mistakes, and in the first scene, she sometimes seems quite cold towards John.

Miller shows a big difference in the way that John and Elizabeth treat Mary. Whilst John is angry and aggressive, Elizabeth is much gentler, and acts like more of a mother. She seems to get on better with Mary, and she says "Why, she's weepin'! What ails you child?" which makes her seem sympathetic. Miller makes it seem as if Elizabeth does not like John's violence towards the girl, and attempts to stop him by talking to Mary, and "hurriedly, as Proctor approaches" is listed in the stage direction.

Miller also displays Elizabeth as someone who has good intuition, and knows how people's minds work. As soon as Elizabeth finds out she is accused, she asks "Who accused me?" showing that she may already have an idea of who is it. She is shown as knowing John very well, and knows his expressions, and she says "I think you be somewhat ashamed" (about John blushing), which is very likely to be true. She also believes that Abigail thinks Proctor still loves him, and says "I think she sees another meaning in that blush", and she has no fear of telling her husband her beliefs about Abigail. Again, she is shown not to forgive people easily, and John says "I see now your spirit twists around the single error of my life, and I will never tear it free", which gives the audience the impression that she has probably complained about his "error" many times before.

As soon as Hale arrives, Miller shows that Elizabeth is suspicious about why he came to her house, and it says "never letting him to of her sight", which shows she is quite uncertain of what is to come. The character is keen to prove her innocence, and says "eagerly" that she does know her commandments. When John cant remember the last commandment, Miller shows that Elizabeth does not want to embarrass her husband, by Elizabeth saying it "delicately", because otherwise John may see think she is trying to get at him. Miller also displays Elizabeth's courage, at being able to ask Hale whether he suspects her, and does not want to turn a blind eye to the fact that she has already been mentioned as being a witch. She is also shown as not being afraid to voice her opinion, which also shows bravery. She says that if people believe she is a witch, then she does not believe in witches, even though the Gospel says there are witches.

Do my essay on Millers presentation of Elizabeth in Act II of The Crucible CHEAP !

Much later in Act II, Elizabeth accidentally makes an angry statement, that Abigail must be "ripped out of the world". This shows that sometimes her emotions can come out to clearly, and this caused her to be suspected more. However, Miller shows that she is quite dignified, and accepts that she has to go with Cheever. She thinks of other people besides herself, and says "When the children wake, speak nothing of witchcraft it will frighten them", which shows the audience that she is quite practical. However, she obviously fears what may happen to her, as she says "Oh, John, bring me soon" showing that she can be vulnerable. The stage direction also says "with great fear".

Over all, Elizabeth is shown to be a good person in Act II, even though the audience can see that she has her flaws. Miller shows her to have common sense, and integrity, and although she may complain about her husband's affair and has not yet forgotten it, she still loves John Proctor.

Justification of Sherron Watkins

I obtained a copy of the memo written to Kenneth Lay Chairman of Enron, by Sherron Watkins(1). In reading this memo I applied the elements in the law of agency (). Ms. Watkins's concerns were sound in that it later came to a head and was proven. She showed to be a loyal employee, but was raising questions of wrongful deeds, which in turn were criminal. Where as this is a justifiable act, she was not required to hold back confidential information she had come upon.

This memo implies that although criminal activity was apparent, she instead trying to rectify it with Kenneth Lay for the sake of saving the organization. The memo was not threatening by any means, it was simply full of information, and questionable acts that she was concerned would ruin Enron's name. She listed 4 personnel she believed to be the sole culprits behind the accounting practices.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on untitled/ethics in business

I believe that in applying the law of agency Ms. Watkins was justified in her choice to blow the whistle internally to Kenneth Lay, but should have gone one step further to authorities right after. Unfortunately, Kenneth Lay brushed off her concerns and never took any further action, due to his own knowledge of criminal accounting practices. Furthermore, Ms. Watkins was acting solely in the best interest of the organization, and not herself.

Retaliation

The current websites I visited did not seemingly portray Ms. Watkins in a negative manner. Questions, however, were raised at why she chose to notify Kenneth Lay , Chairman of Enron, versus other authorities, and it was felt that she in essence was attempting to save his job, with a recommendation with her own solutions.

In an article for the Houston Chronicle (1) discusses that although this has helped her become a celebrity as a whistle blower, a few feel this is not quite an appropriate title. A professor at Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Management felt she approached this with Kenneth Lay as a marketing perspective rather than a whistle blower.

In addition, because of the vital information that Ms. Watkins disclosed she is there by protected by the law (). She was acting in the best interest for the public and the organization and was a benefit to society. Because of the First Amendment right of freedom of speech, she was supported by speaking out against corruption. Although this is held more from a moral view rather than a legal one, it coincides with Ms. Watkins right to disclose confidential information based on criminal activity.

Case Study The Case of the Willful Whistle-Blower

1. Jim Bower had reason to blow the whistle on Fairways. He took steps in the best interest of the consumers and for the sake of Fairway's workers. Jim Bower had well-founded points that if the issue of the flaws in power plant designs were not made public 15 years prior than Fairways might hide something substantial yet again.

. Dr. Wehmhoefer, I went on a search to see if there were any statute of limitations regarding this case, and I did not discover any. I would assume that this may not mean that there are not any limitations but I cannot find them. I would however like the answer to this, and where to locate the information.

. In my opinion, I believe quite a bit was accomplished by Jim Bowers blowing the whistle in this case. It was stated that a few lawsuits were incorporated, which meant that certain consumers retrieved some of the money from the inflated cost they were paying. From a moral and ethical point of view, if Fairways was not in the wrong, the report that was discovered by Jim Bower would not have been hidden for fifteen years, and all would not have acted so abruptly over the findings. Rather than fixing the costly problem they saved money which was a selfish act and not at all thinking of the consumer who kept them in business.

4. The only way similar results could have been achieved is if Ken Deaver or Bob would have blown the whistle or spoke out honestly to the consumers. Ken Deaver was aware of the flaws fifteen years prior, and had the opportunity to do the right thing and correct them. Although Bob was not aware of the issue until Jim Bower brought it to his attention, it was wrong of him not to support his employee's concerns and justify his actions outwardly.

The Asia retail apparel industry is a large, highly fragmented industry. It sales are driven by many factors, e.g. pricing, economic conditions, fashion trend and etc. As the industry are fragmented into different markets. We shall roughly conclude them into two groups branded products and other apparel products. The ¡§branded products¡¨ will refer to the sizeable established companies while the ¡§other apparel products¡¨ refer to the small branded and private label products.

The attractiveness of the retail apparel industry can analysis by different aspect through the Porter¡¦s five forces model as follows

Threat of Substitutes

Clothing is common known as the basic needs for a human life. It is a kind of necessity and is hard to find substitute to replace the function. Basically, apparel products are no major different in nature. But the main differentiation may come from the brands. So, the treat of substitutes seems not an important factor.

Buy cheap the attractiveness of the retail apparel industry in Asia using Porter¡¦s five forces of competition framework. term paper

Threat of Entry

The retail apparel industry has both big and small-size companies. The entry to the apparel industry as an individual retail or private label is quite simple and easy. There are always new comers. The power of entry barriers is insignificant. However, risks of failure are also high and the small brand is often hard to compete against the existing sizeable companies.

Rivalry between Established Competitors

As mentioned above, there are numerous players in the retail apparel industry but no retailer can dominated the industry. Sizeable companies can only capture part of the market shares and large portion still competing by numerous small companies. Due to the fixed cost (rental) is weighted a large proportion in the total cost and there is lower diversity of competitors as the products, cost, strategies and management style are similar, price competition tends to be strong.

Bargaining Power of Buyers

In the retail apparel industry, the buyers are the end user of the products or consumers. They have high bargaining power as the intense competition. The consumers are price sensitive. There are nearly perfect information and the price of each retailer are disclose to public. As a result, consumers are tending to search the value-for-money product among retailers. And due to the similarity of the products, it makes the consumers more likely to switch between retailers.

Bargaining Power of Supplier

The supplier of apparel product can put into raw materials, distributor and labour force.

For the raw materials, as it is crucial to apparel product, however, they only consist a lower proportion of the total cost and there are indifferent of the raw material, the retailer are willing to switch to other supplier, as a result, raw material has less bargaining power.

For the distributors, there are branded products and non-branded products. We can find that the retailer have less bargaining power to distributor of branded products. They have to accept the price if they want to sell the product. Sometimes there are even ¡§control price¡¨ for retailer to follow. On the other hand, the retailer can have more bargaining power to distributor of non-branded products. It is because there are a lot of distributors for non-branded product and their products are similar, retailer can switch to other distributor easily.

And the last one is labour forces, sales is not a skillful position. The education or technical requirement is low; and the labour supply is higher than the demand. As a result, the bargaining power of the labour force is low.

In conclusion, the retail apparel industry is lack of substitutes, easy to entry, the bargaining power of buyer is high and for supplier is relatively low. Overall, the attractiveness of the industries is quite favorable.

A Simple Home

As you drive down the rocky road of College Grove, you see a lot of elaborate southern style homes, but as you arrive at 16, there is a simple white house trimmed in green. When you pull in the slightly dipped drive way, you notice three things. An old basketball hoop that hasn't been used in ages, a freshly cut lawn, and chalk drawing from a nine year old child. You take notice to the "I Love Mommy" on the sidewalk as you walk towards the front door. You see a latch with the name Gunter inscribed in it. You knocked twice and ring the door bell once, and an young mother with blonde hair will open the door to greet you. She pleasantly says, "Welcome to our humble abode," as you walk in. As you step up one step on to a blue tiled doorway, a gold blue heron painting stares you in the eye from the wall in front of you. To the left is the formal family room, otherwise known as the sitting room. Two white couches lay across from each other decorated with fancy pillows. In the middle is a glass table with a flower arrangement, made of blue tulips and white baby's breath, that are obviously fake. To the side of each couch you see an end table with two matching white lamps that are dimly lit. Against the far wall are two clear bureaus decorated in a fish theme. Across the entry way you walk into the formal dining room. A huge antiqued wooden table sits in the middle of the room. Against the wall you see a dining chest, with glass windows, that proudly show dinnerware that are only used two times a year. Cad corner to the dining chest it a small chest where mother keeps her special recipes that are only cooked when company arrives.

Pushing a double swinging door leads you into the kitchen area. There you can many divisions of the house rolled into one. The computer area sits to the left right before you hit the kitchenette. The entry way to the laundry room, garage, guest bathroom and the master bedroom lay to the left. To the right you can see the kitchen where someone is making homemade spaghetti, with fresh vegetables that have just been washed. Everything seems to be in order for a household with three kids, two being teenagers. If you take the path to the master bedroom, you are in for a big surprise. As you turn the brass knob of the freshly painted white door, you open into an immaculate room with a bed special to this house. The bed is made with oak wood, with hand carvings in each of the four posts, and the headboard too. Satin sheets with a wool comforter hangs over the bed to give it a welcoming look. Nightstands made with the same oak material are on each side of the bed, making the scenery much more homey. Two dressers, one for the mother and one for the father, sit across from each other and across from the bed as well. If you enter the bathroom of the master bedroom, you can see the most luxurious and tempting spa tub you have ever seen.

Walking out and through the kitchen, you pass the family room and come to a privacy door that separates the kids from the parents. As you slide the door open, you can walk down a long hallway past three rooms. At the end of the hallway is the bathroom, shared by two teenagers and their younger brother. You make a pit-stop into the oldest teens room and take a look around. You expect a stereotypical messy room with clothes laying on the ground, which have not been washed in weeks, posters of the favorite bands, and a lazy boy laying fast asleep on the unmade bed. When you walk in, the bed is perfectly made, clothes folded and hung neatly in the closet and walls nicely decorated with awards from his school hung neatly on his wall. The teenager is peacefully sitting at his desk studying hard for his next test, and writing a descriptive essay on something familiar to him. Leaving, trying not to break his concentration, you take a look in to the next youngest of the three boys. Expecting the neat gene to run in the family, you assume this room will be the same, but in fact it is just the opposite of the oldest. Everything you expected from the stereotype is what is in this room.

Exiting the younger part of the house, you pass through the family room again, but noticing the very detailed painting of a blue heron high above the entertainment set. Opening the triple sliding glass doors, is the way to enter the Florida Room. When Christmas, Thanksgiving and Super-Bowl time come around, this is the happen' place. A bar filled with any assortment of liquor you could imagine, and three couches all face a wide-screen television.

Noticing all the windows that are wide open, you peer into an elongated back yard. A play-ground the size of the one in a nearby park, lies in front of you. Hedges six foot tall block the gray brick wall that separates the back yard from an orange grove. A table made from metal sits in the corner of the yard. There you find a tall man with broad shoulders smoking a cigar wrapped by himself staring at you. Smelling the mix of pasta with its sauce, you make your way back to the front door, knowing its time for the family to eat. Declining the invitation to stay, you hop in you metallic blue Malibu and drive away down the same bumpy road that you came in on.

William Goldings Lord of the Flies is a parable speaking about how ordinary children revert to savagery when they are abandoned on a deserted island. At first, the children stick together and act reasonably, but then they divide into two camps followers of Ralph, who believe in decency and civilization, and followers of Jack, who paint their faces, sharpen their spears and become hunters. Despairing of ever being rescued, the boys go to war with one another, with deadly results.

The novel deals with the evil deeply rooted within man's soul. It stresses the fact that human nature is originally corrupt and tends to support evil in its worst form. About this, Golding himself has written that "The theme is an attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature." In this way, Golding seems to be a firm believer in the idea of the Original Sin that implies that all human beings are doomed to sin since their great grandfather Adam had disobeyed God.

Thus, Golding's pessimism drives him to change the belief that man is the good, innocent and helpless victim of social forces which he cannot control. To confirm this idea, Golding places a group of young boys on a deserted island to start a new life after their plane has been downed. Those boys may be considered the representatives of a new mankind since the whole outside world is engaged in a nuclear war that will lead all humanity to absolute destruction. Yet, the boys imitate the adult world with its savagery, brute force, evil and moral corruption; and thus the novel ends with their new world, the island, set on fire and doomed to be destroyed due to the evil hidden in man's soul.

Golding first hints at the happy life that the children may have led on the island enjoying themselves. Yet, the tension is present and Golding hints at the evil that is temporarily inactive within the children, and waiting for a chance to explode. The image of the island, though beautiful, does not make it a kind of paradise since storms blow over it and its coconuts look like skulls. The idea of darkness does not only refer to the physical dark of night, but to the darkness of man's heart for which Ralph weeps in the end. The boys lose their own civilization gradually and revert into barbarians. No one of the boys is excluded of this darkness and of the evil that lies at its heart. They all, including Piggy and Ralph, participate in the killing of their Christ, Simon, mistaking him for the beast.

Write my Essay on Theme of Reversion and Evil in William Golding's "Lord of the Flies" for me

The roots of evil appear in the conflict between Ralph, the legal ruler, and Jack the rebel, who takes his "hunters" and leaves. Later on, the hunters' savage murder of the sow stresses the fact that murder and the sight of blood will be witnessed throughout the novel and will extend to their fellows as well. Jack's desire to be chief tempts him to reject civilization for the sake of barbarism. Jack and his hunters rebellion marks the end of the world of play and having fun, and moves us to the real world of experience and power. Simon's murder by the boys, though by mistake, shows that the boys' evil has extended to destroy themselves and their fellows. This feeling is gradually stressed when Jack's gang attacks the camp inhabited by Ralph, Piggy and the little children; the savages attack the civilized to steal their technology for starting a fire Piggy's glasses. The attackers, however, do not take the conch, the symbol of civilization, power and authority; for them, it is useless since their savage society is based on dictatorship, not democracy.

The climax of evil is shown when Piggy is murdered by Roger, and Ralph is being hunted by all the boys seeking to finish off the last symbol of civilization on the island. When the hunters fail to catch him, they set the whole island on fire to get him. Thus, their world has come to resemble that of the adult; both worlds have been destroyed by the evil that is hidden in man's soul. This confirms the idea of the boys' reversion. Thus, the real beast is deep within man's soul; so, at the end of the novel Ralph weeps "for the end of innocence, the darkness of man's heart" that cannot be enlightened.
