Anesthesia

Over one hundred and fifty years ago, in the operating theatre on the top floor of the Massachusetts General Hospital's Bulfinch Building, one of the greatest discoveries in medical history occurred. On October 16, 1846, William T.G. Morton, a Boston dentist, experimented with the use of ether during a surgery, ending the pain and dread associated with a surgeon's knife. Dr. Morton used a specially designed glass inhaler with an ether soaked sponge inside of it. The patient was Gilbert Abbott, a printer with a vascular tumor on his jaw. After several minutes, Mr. Abbott became unconscious. A renowned surgeon of the time, John Collins Warren, MD, then surgically removed the tumor. After the procedure was completed, Gilbert Abbott informed the physicians and medical students he had experienced no pain. As Mr. Abbott was being carried out of the operating theatre, John Collins Warren, MD, turned and looked at everyone else in the theatre and said, "Gentleman, this is no humbug." These now-famous words declared the beginning in a new era for medicine. Within months of the discovery it was pronounced, "The greatest gift ever made to suffering humanity."

Anesthesiology has come a long way in over a hundred and fifty years. There are many different types of anesthesia. Which type of anesthesia you use depends on many factors such as the type of surgical procedure you are having and the state of health you are in. There are four basic divisions of anesthesia general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, local anesthesia, and sedation. Each type of anesthesia has an effect on a part of the nervous system.

General anesthesia affects the brain cells and causes a state of unconsciousness. In this state the patient is unaware of what is happening, pain-free, immobile and free from any memory of the period of time during which he or she is anesthetized. General anesthetics affect the spinal cord resulting in immobility, the brain-stem reticular activating system resulting in unconsciousness and affect the cerebral cortex. General anesthesia can be given to a patient by either an inhaled gas or as an injected liquid. There are many different types of drugs and gases that can be combined or used alone to produce general anesthesia. During a procedure the anesthesiologist continuously monitors the patient's heart rate, heart rhythm, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation. Some patients may have even more monitoring due to the type of procedure being done or the state of the health the patient is in.

Regional anesthesia is done when only a region of the body is anesthetized without making the person unconscious. One example of regional anesthesia is spinal anesthesia, which is often used on woman during childbirth.

Local anesthesia involves numbing a small area by injecting a local anesthetic under the skin just where an incision is being made. When used alone, this type of anesthesia has the least number of risks. Local anesthetics are thought to block nerve impulses by decreasing the permeability of nerve membranes to sodium ions. There are many different types of local anesthetics that differ in absorption, toxicity, and duration of action. One of the most commonly used local anesthetics is lidocaine (xylocaine). This can be given as an injection or placed topically on mucous membranes. Cocaine is another topical anesthetic primarily used to anesthetize nasal passages for surgical procedures.

Some of the drugs that produce general anesthesia in large doses can be used to produce sedation or "twilight sleep" in lower doses. Sedation can be given in many ways. A common example of anesthetic gas that is used for sedation is nitrous oxide or laughing gas. Liquid sedating drugs are usually given by injection, but some can be given orally. Ketamine and Versed are examples of sedating drugs that can be given by injection or orally. Some people, such as children or mentally handicapped, may refuse to drink medications and can also receive sedation through the rectum with a small lubricated tube or through the nasal passages by spraying in the nose. Regional and local anesthesia can be combined with sedation to make patients more comfortable during a procedure in which general anesthesia is not necessary, or when general anesthesia may be too large a risk for the patient.

The main goal of anesthesia is to keep the patient as safe as possible during a surgical procedure. Keeping a close eye on the patient and monitoring the patient on a frequent basis are essentials when using anesthesia. Proper monitoring of the patient greatly reduces the risks involved with anesthesia and surgery.

The Grover Screw Machine Products Company recently received a bid of 10,000 spacers from a customer. Based on the capability of GSMPC, they are able to produce 6 alternative methods. The manager of GSMPC has to decide which method has great advantage to help company to win the bid. Calculating the contribution margin of each methods and get the breakeven, those numbers would help them to recognize the revenue and cost they get from different methods. The following table showed the cost of methods

Exhibit 1 Cost of steel methods

Steel Rod, No Hole Steel Rod, Hole Steel tubing

Machining charge 4. 17.78 .86

Material cost .46 .46 7.

Setup cost 0.8 1 0.8

Price (1000 spacers) 7.75 1.4 0.86

Operation time (10000) 54 hours 8 hours 6 hours

At first, we have to calculate the cost of the rest methods by producing with brass. The following table is calculation of ¡§Brass Rod, No Hole¡¨

Material

Weight of Brass Rod feet 1.1 lbs = 6.16

Scrap value 5 $0.16 = $0.8

Total Cost of Brass Rod 6.16 $0./lb - $0.8= $10.048

Setup

Estimated hours $4 / 10(000) = $0.8 per 1,000

Machining

Cutoff

0.0 in / 0.00 in =165 revolutions required for cutoff

600 (rpm) / 60 (sec) = 60 revolutions per second

165 rev / 60 rev. per sec. = .75 seconds required for cutoff

Chamferring

Approx. seconds

Summary

Total time per piece .75 + = 4.75 sec.

600 sec. / 4.75 sec. = 758 spacers per hour

1000 / 758 = 1. hours total machine time per 1,000 spacers

1. $6.5 = $8.8 total machining charge

The following table is calculationof ¡§Brass Rod, Hole¡¨

Material

Weight of Brass Rod feet 1.1 lbs = 6.16

Scrap value 17 $0.16 = $.7

Total Cost of Brass Rod 6.16 $0./lb - $.7= $8.18

Setup

Estimated .5 hours $4 / 10(000) = $1 per 1,000

Machining

Cutoff

0.150 in / 0.00 in =75 revolutions required for cutoff

600 (rpm) / 60 (sec) = 60 revolutions per second

75 rev / 60 rev. per sec. = 1.5 seconds required for cutoff

Drilling

0.150 in / 0.006 in = 5 revolutions required for centering drilling

0.8 / 0.006 = 55 revolutions required for drilling

5 rev. + 55 rev. =80 rev. total

80 rev / 60 rev. per sec = 1. sec. required for centering and drilling

Chamferring

Approx. seconds

Summary

Total time per piece 1. + = . sec.

600 sec. / . sec. = 1081 spacers per hour

1000 / 1081= 0. hours total machine time per 1,000 spacers

0. $6.5 = $5.055 total machining charge

The following table is calculation of ¡§Brass Tubing, Hole¡¨

Material

Weight of Brass Rod feet 0.7 lbs = .4

Scrap value 1 $0.16 = $0.16

Total Cost of Brass Rod .4 $0.5/lb - $0.16= $11.488

Setup

Estimated .5 hours $4 / 10(000) = $1 per 1,000

Machining

Cutoff

0.150 in / 0.00 in =75 revolutions required for cutoff

600 (rpm) / 60 (sec) = 60 revolutions per second

75 rev / 60 rev. per sec. = 1.5 seconds required for cutoff

Chamferring

Approx. seconds

Summary

Total time per piece 1.5 + = .5 sec.

600 sec. / .5 sec. = 1108 spacers per hour

1000 / 1108= 0. hours total machine time per 1,000 spacers

0. $6.5 = $5.715 total machining charge

We also can make a table as exhibit 1 showed the cost summary of brass methods.

Exhibit Cost of brass methods

Brass Rod, No Hole Brass Rod, Hole Brass Tubing

Machining charge 8.8 5.055 5.715

Material cost 10.048 8.18 11.488

Setup cost 0.8 1 0.8

Price (1000 spacers) 1. 15.055 18.00

Operation time (10000) 1. hours . hours hours

Comparing the exhibit 1 and , we can find there is a significant difference between steel methods and brass methods. Steel methods have higher machining charge but lower material cost. On the contrary, brass methods have lower machining charge but higher material cost. Overall the all methods, the machine charge for using steel is more than three times of using brass for each process, so I don¡¦t suggest the manager of GSMPC choosing steel methods but brass methods. For the three brass methods, brass rod without hole has highest cost and longest operation hours. Besides, the operation time of brass rod with hole is closed to that of brass tubing, but the cost of brass rod with hole is much lower than brass tubing¡¦s. Aiming at capacity and cost points, I strongly recommend company to choose brass rod with hole.

For brass rod with hole method, the price of producing 10,000 spacers is $150.55 (10 15.055); profit is $6.75 (. hr $0.75), so the lowest price they use to bid is $14.8 (150.55 ¡V 6.75). It means if GSMPC cannot bid the price higher than $14.8, they will not gain from it. It is better give up the business.

Excepting methods, the other drawback of whole process is setup man who only works for the day shift. There has a risk if the machine failed to meet specifications on the night shift, the foreman has to shut it down, and wait for the setup man to adjust it on next day. This matter will disarrange the producing schedule and cause idle time and cost increased. I also suggest the company hire a more setup man for the night shift if the increased cost is acceptable.

Major Project ¨C Performance of Professional European Soccer Clubs

The English Premier League, England¡¯s professional soccer league has long been considered one of the most difficult, lucrative, competitive and most loved soccer leagues in the world. So much is this fact that many people associate soccer immediately with England or one of its smaller teams. Sometimes even individual players such as David Beckham or Thierry Henry symbolise the game in England. Even if now the season has ended for the English Premier League has ended, there still are leagues all around the world, playing for the glory that comes for being the soccer champions of their nation. There are leagues established in every continent in the world, and the FIFA World Cup is a cumulation of all these leagues. The world cup is the most widely watched event in the world, and this is one of the reasons why soccer is sometimes considered as the ¡®World Game¡¯.

However, though the English Premier League has been considered the foremost soccer competition, this statement is based more on reputation and popularity. Because many people hear first of soccer from the League, these people consider the English Premier League as the best and most competitive. But there are many other Leagues around Europe alone that boast even more expensive teams, more ferocious competition and more soccer superstars than any other league. An example of one of these leagues is the Spanish version of the league the Spanish Primera Liga.

So does the English Premier League have what it takes to compete with the Spanish Primera Liga?

Buy cheap Scoring rates of soccer competitions term paper

To answer the question, four of the top teams as of this date are selected from both of these leagues. Their last 1 games were then found and then their scores were recorded down. From these scores, an estimate for the average for top-flight teams in both leagues could be found and thus compared. The league that can achieve the highest projected average for an entire season is then the most prolific scoring and therefore the better performers.

The Method

To predict the performance for an entire season of each club, a sample of 1 scores from each club from their last 1 games would be taken. Thus, 48 scores would be taken from each league, with 6 scores in total for both leagues combined. After the data is collected, the mean, sample distribution and the five number summary would be found for each league.

Because the entire season performance is being forecasted from a sample only, the population mean would instead be a range, with a certain level of confidence that the mean will fall inside that range. This equation

¦Ì = x ¡À (z) x ¦

¡Ìn

Where ¦Ì is the population mean, X is the sample mean, z is the confidence level, ¦ is the standard deviation for the sample data, and n is the count of results. This equation will determine within a certain confidence interval the mean of the population, on in this case, for an entire season of soccer.

To find these, the TI-8 function 1-Var Stats will summarise the data into a readable form. It will find x and ¦. The z score is equal to 1.6 for a 5% confidence interval for analytical comparison, and n is 48 or the number of stats for each league. However, the assumption must be made that the results obtained will be approximately normal for this to be effective.

Data Collection

The data, the goals scored by each team had been documented by one of the Internet¡¯s foremost sports networks. ESPN is a sport network dedicated to all major forms of sport and their soccer branch (named Soccernet) keep records of team statistics, player statistics, fixtures, records and general articles. The scores from this year¡¯s English Premier League and Spanish Primera Liga were taken from this site, as these results were accurate when compared to the official game records stored at the official sites of the leagues.

To ensure there was no bias in the scores supplied by the teams, the scores for all eight teams were taken from the last 1 games of their seasons. The theory behind this is that at the end of the season, every team adds to their regular performance to achieve the highest possible position in the ladder at the end of the season. So all the teams selected would have to have undergone this period of high performance during the selected 1 games of the season.

Also, to ensure the end result was to be as accurate as possible, 48 scores were collected for each league, adding up to a total of 6 scores. These 48 scores are needed for sufficient comparisons to be drawn between the leagues as well as for accurate use for the population mean equation.

Part A - Cat and Mouse Game - Knowledge and Procedures

Q1- My first impression from looking at the board game is that I will lose. This is because the room that holds the mouse is closer to the cat than the room that has the cheese.

Q- a) First 10 trials (O = Odd, E = Even)

1- OOE - W 6- OO - L

4- OO - L - OO - L

5- EOO - L 10- EOE - W

Total - 4 wins (W) and 6 loses (L)

The results from these 10 trials does not change my initial prediction because the chance of losing is higher than winning.

b) Next 40 trials (O = Odd, E = Even)

11- OEE - W 1- EOO - L 1- OEOE - W 41- EOE - W

Total - 1 wins (W) and 1 loses (L)

The results from these trials does change my initial prediction in the fact that there is a higher chance of winning. These results also contradict the results from Q a)

Modelling and Problem Solving

Q -

Tree Diagram -

All Possible Outcomes -

1. OO - ½ x ½ = 1/4 L

. OEOO - ½ x ½ x ½ x ½ = 1/16 L

. OEOE - ½ x ½ x ½ x ½ = 1/16 W

4. OEE - ½ x ½ x ½ = 1/8 W Chances

Winning = 56%

5. EOO - ½ x ½ x ½ = 1/8 L Losing = 44%

6. EOE - ½ x ½ x ½ = 1/8 W

7. EEOO - ½ x ½ x ½ x ½ = 1/16 L

8. EEOE - ½ x ½ x ½ x ½ = 1/16 W

. EEE - ½ x ½ x ½ = 1/8 W

Discussion -

From the analysis of the outcomes, it shows that this board game actually advantages the mouse. Unlike my initial prediction that it would advantage the cat. From looking at the above calculations, there is a 56% chance of throwing a winning game (this means that you can throw any one of the 5 combinations that lead you to the cheese) whereas there is only a 44% chance of throwing a losing game ( throwing any one of the 4 combinations that lead you to the cat) 5 out of the combinations results in a winning game, where only 4 of the combinations results in a losing game.

With each throw there is a 50% chance of either throwing a odd or an even number, this never changes. It would not matter how many times you threw the dice, there would always be an even chance of throwing even or odd numbers.

Q6 - The skill being learnt here is tossing a paper ball into a waste paper basket. The paper ball was 6cm in diameter and was thrown over arm from metres away, into a waste paper basket that was 7cm high and 5cm in diameter. The effect of doing this trial for over a week was to investigate if the comment 'Practice makes Perfect' is correct. After analysing the data that has been collected, the comment has been proven to be correct. By looking at the Binomial Probability Distribution tables and graphs this can be shown. When looking at the table, the total added up in the before table is 0.88 whereas in the after table it is 0.7. This proves that it has become closer to 1. When looking at the graphs, it is shown that in the before histogram, the graph is towards the first half (lower numbers) and then goes down to a 0.000 at the end whereas in the after graph, the graph is more towards the last half and is higher at this end (higher numbers). All this proves that with practice it becomes more likely that you will achieve a success rather than a failure.

Compared to the United States, Thailand is not that big in population or even land. The people in this region of the world have a different type of culture compared to other type o the world. The government is different do to the fact that they have a Constitutional Monarchy rather than a democracy. The transportation and machinery are similar to many other regions. Our economy isn't what it should be, but Thailand is having the same problem. They face life-threatening diseases, as do the rest of the world.

The general location of Thailand is in the northeastern hemisphere in southern Asia. Thailand borders the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. The technical location of Thailand is 15 degrees north and 100 degrees east. The estimated area of land is 511,770-sq mi. and the estimated area of water within the country is ,0-sq mi. For a reference of size to compare it to, one can say that Thailand is twice the size of the state of Wyoming. The climate in this region for the most part is tropical from mid May to September. The weather is usually warm, rainy, and cloudy with southwest monsoons. The weather dramatically changes from November to March. It's usually dry, and cool with northeast monsoons.

The people of Thailand have a fairly large population of about 61,0,000. There is a major health problem that is affecting Thailand as well as the rest of the world. It's the high percentage of people with AIDS, thus causing the life expectancy of the population to lower, This is also causing the population and growth rate to lower, the infant mortality rates to higher, and the changing percentage of men to women. The growth rate of Thailand is .% with a life expectancy of 68. The religion in this country is Thai at 75% of the population; the second most common is Chinese with 14%, and 11% of the population worships a different type of religion. The languages most frequently spoken are Thai, and English.

The government that Thailand uses is called a Constitutional Monarchy. What this is, it's a set of laws laided down by the people of the nation. The King and Queen do not have the power as they did in the 16th and 17th century. The name less frequently used in Thailand called The Kingdom Of Thailand, and the more frequently used name is Thailand. The capital of Thailand is Bangkok, and the initials are TH. One of the things citizens of Thailand takes pride in is that they were never colonized. They withheld their country and became a nation in 18 having a strong country and not being defeated by the British.

The way that the country gets around is the same way we get around. Their cars are as modern as ours, and many people use them to for daily transportation. They have ,40 km. of railways in the entire country. They also have highways like us but not some of them. Some of our highways are in not so good of shape. They have about 6,000 paved highways and 1,600 unpaved highways. The waterways within this country are average with about 4,000-km.

Poverty in Thailand is not as bad as people compared to many other countries around the world. The percentage of poverty below average is 1.5%. The inflation rates of consumer prices are going up about .5%. The industries that are in business as of now are tourism, textile and garments, agricultural processing, beverages, tobacco, and cement. Thailand is the third largest tin producer and also produces 85 billion kWh by using their five main fossil fuels and hydroelectric power. The consumption of electricity is 80billion kWh. The ten countries that have imports and exports with are share with Thailand are Japan, U.S., Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Germany, China, South Korea, Omen and Indonesia. The natural resources that the country produces and export are tin, rubber, natural gas, tungsten, tantalum, timber, lead, fish, gypsum, lignite, fluorite, and arable land.

To enter Thailand a passport is required and if the tourist plans on staying longer than 0 days they need to get a visa. Thailand is a very well known travel destination for tourist. Do to the fact of being popular, service sites are located all around the country. People go to Thailand on holidays like New Years Eve, and New Years Day. The others that have nothing in common to what we celebrate are Chakri Day, National Labour Day in May, Coronation, Mid Year Day, H. M. the Queens Birthday, Chulalongkorn Day, H.M. the King's Birthday, and Constitution Day.

Thailand's geography is relatively good when compared to different parts of the world. They have normal tropical weather and its land is mostly flat with some mountain ranges. Their government is different than ours. Ours is a democracy and theirs is a Constitutional Monarchy. They have a King and Queen and we have a president. So, the U.S. has different way of dealing with their government than Thailand. They have a lot of exports from countries and get lots of imports too. Their economy is as good or bad as the rest of the world. It's average at this point in time. Thailand seems like an average country just making a living as the rest of the world.

Springville Herald Case Study (Phase I)

.1 Data Table attached

. a.) Pareto Diagram attached

b.) We chose the Pareto diagram for this table, because it gives the most insight to the problem with the information provided. In this case, Copy error and Typesetting are the two mistakes that have the highest frequency.

Re "Customer Complaints" Meeting

We concluded this morning's meeting to address the complaints of the Springfield Herald's advertising, and with the help of the data you provided us we found that the advertising department had a total of 1 errors reported for the June 10th 00 issue. With the help of a diagram, we did find that the highest frequency of errors occurred in Copy Error and Typesetting (see attached Excel document Summary of Errors.doc). There were also high frequency of errors in the wrong position, wrong ad, velox and ones that were run in error. We request more information concerning these errors, specifically what the costs of these errors are.

. At this stage of the analysis, as stated in the report to management, the frequency of errors is not the only issue, but also what it is costing the paper in advertising. Information about the cost to the paper for the errors would be useful

.4 Data Table attached

.5 a) Graph attached

b) and c) We chose a side-by-side graph because we felt that the correlation between cost and occurrences were summarized best. It is most evident in this graph that even though the copy error occurred the most, it was not the most expensive. The error that cost the Springville Herald the most was ran in error.

Re Advertising Errors

After our last meeting regarding reducing cost and focusing on errors we found that even though a particular error may occur most often, it is not necessarily the most costly. Attached is a chart showing the percent of occurrences and the percentage of associated cost. The four most expensive errors are 1) ran in error, ) typesetting, ) copy error and 4) wrong ad.

We would suggest focusing in on correcting and eliminating these four errors as they account for 71.% of the total cost of errors. Systems need to be set and followed to assure these errors are reduced if not eliminated.

.7 Data Table attached

.8 a) Side-by-Side Bar Chart Attached

b) Using the side-by-side bar chart clearly depicts interrelationships among dollar amounts for each of the different types of ran-in-error problems. Pie charts, although possible to develop individual side-by-side for each category, the perception of interrelationships would not be as noticeable as with the side-by-side bar chart.

c) We did not select a Pareto chart for this exercise because although Pareto charts are good for analyzing single category distributions, they are not so good for depicting relationships among multiple category distributions.

Re Cost of Ran-in-Error Problems

After careful analysis of the cost of advertising errors for the past calendar year, it is obvious from the attached data that the area that needs the most attention is in the policy area. Of the three different types of ran-in-error problems, sales and the composing room together accounted for only 10% of the problems, while policy accounted for the remaining 0%. Therefore, our recommendation is to focus on the policy area for corrective action.

e) Our recommended course of action would be to look for conflicting policies and/or vague policies that are open to a wide range of interpretation by individual users. Perhaps a survey could be conducted among the users, which could then be analyzed statistically.

Springville Herald Case Study (Phase 4)

. a) Stem & Leaf Plot attached

b) This phase of the exercise asked us to review the amount of different data cartridges used on a daily basis within the company. After reviewing the raw data, we produced a Stem & Leaf Plot to determine where the distribution of the data fell. From this plot, we concluded that most of the time the production area used between 1 and 0 different data cartridges daily. This represented 6 of the 111 different data points collected. Roughly 6% of the time, the area can expect to have between 1 and 0 different cartridge changes daily. This case also follows the widely held theorem concerning the 80-0 rule. In this case, 80% of the data cartridge changes occur between 1 and 60 times daily. For staffing purposes, the area should staff for this rate of occurrence. We reviewed other types of charts with this data but find that they did not provide the information necessary to make educated conclusions about the operation.

The story of the American dream examines the roles of people and the primary American culture.

Nick Carraway is the narrator and it is through his eyes that we see the other characters and the world they live in. He knows all the characters well enough to be present at the crucial scenes in the novel. Carraway appears to be the one character in the novel to exhibit, and hold onto, a sense of morals and decency. Through the novel, we witness the corruption of the American dream by the desire for material wealth.

The story talks about the things in 10s. It is called the roaring twenties. It seems like that people had discovered new wealth at that time. They always set about living the high life with their new found. The story contains innumerable references to the contemporary scene.

Nick Carroway acted as witness, outsider and participant in the story. Many characters in the story are judged in the story. Many of them are described as inconsiderate, greedy and scornful. As he said, ¡°Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction¡±. Nobody else in the novel-not even Daisy-really understands him. Nick is, at the novels end, Gatsbys only friend, even though he disapproves of many things which Gatsby stands for. Nick says about Gatsby that he was an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again.

Yes, as what Nick said, Gatsby is the rich, majestic protagonist of the novel. For Gatsby, his dream is that through wealth and power, one can acquire happiness. Daisy was the rich girl that he fell in love with and tries to get. As the second cousin of Nick, her character was depicted very clear by Nick.

Daisy is the original material girl and focuses on outwards instead of the inward. Tom bought her love with a three hundred thousand dollar necklace, and now Gatsby is doing it with a huge mansion and a lot of nice shirt. From Daisy we can see the social standing in 10s in American. Many of them do not have a strong will and always crack under pressure. It is one of the things that make Nick sorrowful.

Nick participated parties in the novel. The parties that Gatsby held every week in summer were a symbol of the carelessness of the time. Gatsby would hide in the house while the ¡®Guests¡¯ are in the party, Most of whom were not even invited. They eat and drink until the early hours of the morning. For Mr. Gatsby, he might hold the party to meet Daisy. Nick, as a witness, he saw clearly that the guests are inconsiderate and self-centered. The most surprised thing is that none of them attend the Gatsby¡¯s funeral in the end.

Another important symbol in the novel is the class gap between the rich and poor which is shown by Gatsby and Wilson; West Egg and Valley of the ashes. From his narration, we can see that Nick hate that class gap, but the truth is that the actual social condition is totally different from the idea of equality among people. From the story, we can see the divisions among the classes can¡¯t be over come at that time.

Through Nick¡¯s eyes, it seems that he doesn¡¯t care too much about how did Gatsby makes his money, but gives lots of details. The way he makes his money is actually a sign of the fall of the American Dream.

The alcohol was prohibited in USA in the 10s. Gatsby do the crime is to get the thing he wants; to make his dream come true. He has worked to achieve his ambition. He sees perfection in Daisy one who is far from perfect and is consumed by materialistic values of her social class. In the end, all his efforts become a kind of waste.

The green lights are appears more than one times in the book. (Quote Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year receded before us. It eluded us then, but that¡¯s no matter-tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms further¡¡±) The green light is not only the Gatsby¡¯s dream, but also a primary symbol for the American dream. The light is some thing beyond. Unluckily, his dream was destroyed in the end just like the U.S.A. As Nick said ¡°(Quote After Gatsby¡¯s death the East haunted me ¡distorted beyond my eyes¡¯ powers of correction¡I decided to come back home.) After Gatsby¡¯s death, the narrator may observe more about the society at that time. He saw that people were scornful, inconsiderate, false and judgmental. That¡¯s probably a main reason why he left the Mid West and it¡¯s part of why he ended up going back.

As the outsider of all these involvements, Nick represents a brilliant story for us. The story ends up with a tragedy, but shows us lots of things. The death of Gatsby mirrors the failure of the American dream. It symbols the corruption of commercialism. It is also a comment on moral decadence in modem American society. Please note that this sample paper on tian is for your review only.
