The story of the American dream examines the roles of people and the primary American culture.

Nick Carraway is the narrator and it is through his eyes that we see the other characters and the world they live in. He knows all the characters well enough to be present at the crucial scenes in the novel. Carraway appears to be the one character in the novel to exhibit, and hold onto, a sense of morals and decency. Through the novel, we witness the corruption of the American dream by the desire for material wealth.

The story talks about the things in 10s. It is called the roaring twenties. It seems like that people had discovered new wealth at that time. They always set about living the high life with their new found. The story contains innumerable references to the contemporary scene.

Nick Carroway acted as witness, outsider and participant in the story. Many characters in the story are judged in the story. Many of them are described as inconsiderate, greedy and scornful. As he said, ¡°Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction¡±. Nobody else in the novel-not even Daisy-really understands him. Nick is, at the novels end, Gatsbys only friend, even though he disapproves of many things which Gatsby stands for. Nick says about Gatsby that he was an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again.

Yes, as what Nick said, Gatsby is the rich, majestic protagonist of the novel. For Gatsby, his dream is that through wealth and power, one can acquire happiness. Daisy was the rich girl that he fell in love with and tries to get. As the second cousin of Nick, her character was depicted very clear by Nick.

Daisy is the original material girl and focuses on outwards instead of the inward. Tom bought her love with a three hundred thousand dollar necklace, and now Gatsby is doing it with a huge mansion and a lot of nice shirt. From Daisy we can see the social standing in 10s in American. Many of them do not have a strong will and always crack under pressure. It is one of the things that make Nick sorrowful.

Nick participated parties in the novel. The parties that Gatsby held every week in summer were a symbol of the carelessness of the time. Gatsby would hide in the house while the ¡®Guests¡¯ are in the party, Most of whom were not even invited. They eat and drink until the early hours of the morning. For Mr. Gatsby, he might hold the party to meet Daisy. Nick, as a witness, he saw clearly that the guests are inconsiderate and self-centered. The most surprised thing is that none of them attend the Gatsby¡¯s funeral in the end.

Another important symbol in the novel is the class gap between the rich and poor which is shown by Gatsby and Wilson; West Egg and Valley of the ashes. From his narration, we can see that Nick hate that class gap, but the truth is that the actual social condition is totally different from the idea of equality among people. From the story, we can see the divisions among the classes can¡¯t be over come at that time.

Through Nick¡¯s eyes, it seems that he doesn¡¯t care too much about how did Gatsby makes his money, but gives lots of details. The way he makes his money is actually a sign of the fall of the American Dream.

The alcohol was prohibited in USA in the 10s. Gatsby do the crime is to get the thing he wants; to make his dream come true. He has worked to achieve his ambition. He sees perfection in Daisy one who is far from perfect and is consumed by materialistic values of her social class. In the end, all his efforts become a kind of waste.

The green lights are appears more than one times in the book. (Quote Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year receded before us. It eluded us then, but that¡¯s no matter-tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms further¡¡±) The green light is not only the Gatsby¡¯s dream, but also a primary symbol for the American dream. The light is some thing beyond. Unluckily, his dream was destroyed in the end just like the U.S.A. As Nick said ¡°(Quote After Gatsby¡¯s death the East haunted me ¡distorted beyond my eyes¡¯ powers of correction¡I decided to come back home.) After Gatsby¡¯s death, the narrator may observe more about the society at that time. He saw that people were scornful, inconsiderate, false and judgmental. That¡¯s probably a main reason why he left the Mid West and it¡¯s part of why he ended up going back.

As the outsider of all these involvements, Nick represents a brilliant story for us. The story ends up with a tragedy, but shows us lots of things. The death of Gatsby mirrors the failure of the American dream. It symbols the corruption of commercialism. It is also a comment on moral decadence in modem American society. Please note that this sample paper on tian is for your review only. Question What do you suppose underlies the apparent need to tell stories, given that storytelling is practiced in every culture?

Stith Thompson's article discussed duties of the storyteller as well as societies involvement in storytelling. Along the same line the definition for story or folk tales was given. The term folktale Thompson stated was too broad to "completely separate written and oral traditions". The oral story is one passed on by word of mouth becoming something to tell an audience. For the most part, an oral story doesn't stray from its original intention. On the other hand the written tale is traditionally written and recopied. In this essay I will further discuss Thompson's article. Secondly through examples I will answer why story telling is enriched in our culture. The three examples outlined in this essay are education, self-promotion, and entertainment value.

My first example education is a foundation in which all children are taught. As children grow the need to instruct them on the rights and wrongs of society grow as well. Through story telling morals and guidelines are outlined in a positive, inviting manor. A story captures a child's attention. A story also offers the child a role model to aspire to. Through education, generations of history are passed as well. A stereotype of history is that it is old and boring. Storytelling offers a channel to pass knowledge, without the stigma of boredom attached. Morals of accepted behavior fill pages of stories and folktales. In each of these stories is the idea that if you behave in an acceptable manor, your actions will be condoned. As each story has their hero every story has their villein. The villein does not behave according to society and consequently receives a harsh punishment.

The second use of story telling involves the unkind side of human nature. This being our need to boast and brag. The need to make bigger and better our lives and stories in comparison to those around us. Thomson stated that "our modern society strives for originality". Along the same line Thompson argued "the storyteller strives to impress". As these two statements show in today's world we are constantly bragging as we strive to outdo our friend's with our outlandish tales. Thompson went on to reiterate that through storytelling we add our personal details to the story. That in fact the oral art of storytelling may differ in subject, place, or condition, but overall the story is for the most part the same. To add to this by adding our

Own personal touches to a story we are in fact showing off our hidden creative ability. This in itself is a form of bragging as we are use our knowledge and talent's to help illustrate or spice up a story. Storytelling is not always negative. An example of which includes stories told to highlight occurrences in a person's life. By telling a story one can relate a day of their life to one of their friends or families.

Finally a good story can be used for entertainment value. As with any story there is the hidden motive of the storyteller's desire to tell. For the most part stories are told to bring those around us closer together. There is no better way to bring people together then humor. A good way to do this is through the use of a story in which everyone can find entertainment. A story that involves entertainment may bring laughter to a hard time in one's life. Along the same line, before the start of any major event a person stands and a story is told. A story is told not for the simple sake of taking up time but because it offers a way in which to brighten spirits and involve all.

In conclusion the above examples have highlighted reasons why storytelling is crucial to our culture. Story telling for the most part offer's benefits that out way its negative aspects. Although some may use a story as a venue for extradition others use story telling as a means of relating to their neighbors. As storytelling has existed for centuries the likelihood for a sudden cease to this is slim to none. As children of today grow in the adults of tomorrow the stories they heard as children may evolve, but the motivation behind their telling will not.

In the twentieth century two key figures stand on top of the tower of tyrannical leaders Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler. Together these two leaders were responsible for more deaths and suffering than most can ever imagine. Their rise to power and their stability of power with their people could have been predicted though. In The Prince, Machiavelli outlined the type of behavior and leadership that is required to govern a country. Machiavelli's book outlines, among other concepts, the use of any and all means, war, and fear in order to rise to power and stay in power. Thus, The Prince should be regarded as a guide to tyranny.

"We are fifty or a hundred years behind the advanced countries. We must make good this distance in ten years. Either we do it, or we shall be crushed." (Joseph Stalin in his speech to industrial managers, February 11). Machiavelli tells us in effect that the end justifies the means. Joseph Stalin accomplished something just short of a miracle in Soviet Russia in the period preceding World War Two. With his 5-year plans for industrialization and modernization, he transformed the Soviet Union from a backwards agriculturalist country to the industrial powerhouse that was able to withstand the massive onslaughts of Nazi Germany. To accomplish this, though, Stalin ordered the collectivization of soviet farms. By 140, almost all peasant and private farms had been collectivized, and private ownership of property had been almost completely abolished. About five million of the wealthier peasants, also known as kulaks, were "deported." No one ever heard from them again. The rest of the peasants were herded into collective farms, stripped of their individual lives, and forced to work the land to pave the way for industrialization. Despite a massive famine in early thirties due to collectivization, Stalin was able to produce enough grain and workers to feed the new and growing industry, and was able to hold off the Germans in WWII. Thus, in the eyes of Machiavelli, in the end the means were justified.

Machiavelli describes the relationship between statesmanship and warcraft in The Prince. He describes that in order to have sound laws, the presence of a sound military is required. He also asserts that successful warfare is the foundation for a successful state, and that successful warfare isn't just sheer overwhelming force, but also diplomacy, strategy, innovation, etc. Adolf Hitler transformed Germany from a destructed wasteland back into one of the most powerful nations in the world. To rebuild his country, he rebuilt Germany's military. His fascist ruling techniques instituted strong laws alongside the newly redeveloped military in a country that was nearly in a state of anarchy after WWI. His military tactics were very successful, with the German "Blitzkrieg" conquering almost all of Europe in a very short period of time. In Machiavelli's eyes, Hitler's successful warcrafting abilities were able to create a strong state and a successful prince.

One of the most stressed of Machiavelli's concepts was that in order to rule effectively and stay in power a prince should be feared but not hated. Joseph Stalin spread fear across his nation. Stalin eliminated opposition, such as Trotsky and Kirov, and used them as excuses for purging millions of citizens into forced labor camps and their own deaths. Kirov's assassination, in particular, was used as an excuse for the Great Terror of the 0's, and the draconian and tyrannical laws instituted by Joseph Stalin during that time period. To help with the elimination of his opposition, the Secret Police, under Stalin's orders, arrested and executed millions of political dissenters. By using extreme fear, Stalin was able to stay in power until his death in 15. While Machiavelli may not have approved of murder on the scale of Joseph Stalin's, this is nevertheless a prime example of using fear to stay in power, and people were too afraid of Stalin to hate him.

Order Custom Machiavelli: Guide to Tyranny paper

So, if Stalin and Hitler were brought to power and stayed in power by the actions outlined in The Prince, then why did they fail in the end? The answer is simple. Stalin and Hitler failed because they strayed from Machiavelli's teachings. Hitler went too far and let personal grievances take control of his power. He became greedy in his warcrafting, and slaughtered millions of Jews because of a personal hatred for them. Stalin simply became hated. His use of fear was taken too far, and by the end, he was more hated than feared. This being said, these two individuals are perfect examples of why Machiavelli's The Prince is a guidebook to tyranny. Had they stayed true to his concepts, there is no telling what the world might be like today. If there is a Hell, along with Hitler and Stalin, Machiavelli is most likely in it.Please note that this sample paper on Machiavelli: Guide to Tyranny is for your review only. Once I graduated from university this year I found myself among the lucky ones. Despite the unpleasant situation in the job-market I didn't have to look for job while most of my fellow schoolmates still can't find one I had a well-paid place already. However, my work experience enforced me to go beyond, go for graduate school. Only that way I can accomplish what I desire for assisting in establishment of durable class of private entrepreneurs, which would be the foundation of free market economy in Uzbekistan. That's the reason I'm applying for Business Administration program of the London Metropolitan University (LMU).

Speaking of my educational background, I graduated from the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED) becoming a BA in International Economic Relations. There are two essential points to be mentioned about the UWED. Firstly, the University offers the best educational curriculum in the country with highly qualified professionals. Secondly which in fact diminishes the meaning of the previous point to some extent due to objective circumstances (e.g. the transitional situation and lack of strong business environment) the studies had had little exposure to practical application of its education. Thus while a sophomore I decided to gain some practical experience, and, moreover, working would allow me support myself financially.

I used to do translation work on weekends for foreign companies in the city. Consequently I became close with one of them, the Pragma Corporation offered a part-time job at the beginning, which was expanded to a full-time position later. Currently I am the Regional Exam Coordinator of the Certified International Accountant Professionals Examination Network (CIPAEN), the branch of Pragma's Enterprise Development Project (EDP) funded by the USAID. Mission of the project is to assist in developing of small and medium-sized entrepreneurship in Central Asia by providing courses on international standards of accounting and financial management, and consulting entrepreneurs on various business issues. My responsibilities include, particularly, facilitating examination sessions on auditing through direct contacting entrepreneurs, and this allowed me to get a better understanding of the current business environment in the country by receiving a firsthand insights and knowledge of the real economic situation and problems that the local entrepreneurs have been dealing with over the past years.

On my work experience and the personal observations I put out some considerations about my future. Since I became a student I have witnessed the dramatic changes happening in my country. Though the priority of the ongoing reforms is given to developing of private entrepreneurships there are barriers that hinder local businessmen, and foreign investors as well. Many of the obstacles of doing business in Uzbekistan boil down to an absence or lack of business culture and definite understanding of privacy along with the absence of a clear legal framework and economic program on part of the government. Local businesses were trained in the command system, when rule of law was something very vague and relative to the political leadership. I am convinced that there is no way that Uzbekistan can become part of the world economy without a strong middle class, the class of prospering private entrepreneurs. From this perspective, developing further the activity of the EDP project, to a Consulting Firm for example, would make a good sense. Studying Business Administration at LMU, which offers a program with strong professionalism attitude, would allow me to accomplish this goal. Particularly consulting and training on tactics needed to succeed in the world of business, learning markets of different origins, internationally accepted ethics of business, and etc., will gain more efficiency and precision.

Additionally, if selected for studying at LMU it will not be my first experience of living abroad. I spent three years of my childhood in Syria where my father was invited to work during 186 -18 years. We lived in the Soviet settlement, however, regularly communicated with the neighboring foreign settlements, which allowed me to interact closely with people of different nationalities and cultures. Cultural diversity was an important factor in building new friendships. Therefore, I'm positive that studying at LMU with its international community will give me an opportunity to build new friendships with my peers from other countries and expand my cultural perceptions that are very important for today's business environment.

I strongly believe that obtaining an MBA degree at London Metropolitan University will give me necessary tools to achieve my personal and professional goals, as I aspire to establish consulting and training business in Uzbekistan. Courses on Marketing, Management, Financial and Managerial Accounting, Public Relations and Advertisement would be of my special interest due these disciplines are not well established in my country. Besides, I find LMU's education system as an optimal combination of both theory and real life that could give me an opportunity to expand my knowledge and gain practical experience in the sphere of business management. Consequently, getting a degree from LMU would enable me to make my steps forward in life and career more successful and profitable.

She was awake now and completely oblivious to what had occurred the night before. As she sat up, she could still feel the affects of the alcohol that she had consumed at the party last night. She did not recognize the room that she was in and she wondered why she did not have any clothes on. As she looked to the clock on the bed stand, she noticed that it was almost noon. She got up, collected her clothes and headed for the bathroom. While she was in there, Eddie, her good friend entered the room. Eddie was a senior at the University of California. He was a star wide receiver on the football team and he was also the president of his fraternity. He had broad shoulders, a perfectly toned body, and a very handsome face. Eddie was considered a big catch for any girl. He was "Mr. Popular" yet, he was a very big player with all of the ladies.

Thinking that she had gone, he proceeded to make a phone call to one of his friends, bragging about how he had slept with Sarah the night before. Sarah dropped her brush when she heard him say this. Eddie stopped talking on the phone and walked over to the bathroom. She quickly gathered herself and opened the door when he knocked.

"I thought you had left," explained Eddie.

"No, I just woke up and came in here to get cleaned up before I went home," replied Sarah. She decided that she was going to pretend that she did not hear him and that she had no idea about what had happened the night before.

"How are you feeling this morning," said Eddie as he pretended to care. "You sure did drink a lot at the party last night."

"I feel alright. Thanks for taking care of me."

"No, problem," he replied with a faint smirk.

"I do have one question though," she said, holding back the tears, "How did I end up back here? Why didn't you just take me home last night?"

"You couldn't find your keys so I thought that you could just stay here."

"Well, thanks again. I'll see you around." She closed the door behind her and burst into tears. All she wanted to do was go back to her own dorm room and take a shower.

After she got out of the shower she went into her room and noticed that Amy, her roommate was on the phone with Eddie. They were planning on the three of us going to a party that night. I just walked in and laid on my bed. My mind was racing, I had so many questions. All I wanted to know was the truth about last night. Did we sleep together? Did he rape me? What really happened?

Amy got off the phone and told me of the plans that she had made for that evening. She also told me that Eddie said that I got really trashed last night. That was my big question though, "How much did I actually drink?"

Amy noticed that I was not paying attention and she asked what was wrong.

"Well, I'm not really sure about what happened last night," Sarah exclaimed.

"Eddie said that the party was awesome and that you both drank quiet a lot. How much did you drink?" she asked.

"I'm not sure. I think I only had four cups from the keg and that wouldn't have made me incoherent. I think that Eddie put something into my drink because I do not remember anything. All I know is that I woke up this morning in Eddie's bed without any clothes on." Sarah was in tears as she told her story to Amy.

"Are you sure that you guys had sex?" Amy asked.

"I heard him talking to one of his friends on the phone this morning while I was in the bathroom. He was bragging that he had got me into his bed." Sarah was crying even worse now and Amy had come over to comfort her friend.

"Do you know if he used protection?"

"I don't know? I have no idea about what happened. I don't remember going upstairs or anything along the lines of the sex that we had."

"What do you want to do now? Do you want to go to the hospital and check for diseases and pregnancies? Do you want to talk to Eddie and ask him any questions that you have?" Amy was very concerned about Sarah because she had never seen her this upset before and she was scared about any diseases that she may have acquired..

"I definitely do not want to talk to Eddie. I wouldn't know what to say and I hate him right now. Let's just go to the hospital and see if there is anything wrong with me?"

After several hours at the hospital, Sarah and Amy returned back to there dorm room with a sigh of relief. She found out that he did use a condom after all. HYDRATES OF COPPER SULFATE AND THE UNKNOWN LIQUID

Introduction

This experiment was done to learn about true hydrates and the reactions that take place under different circumstances. It was hypothesized that the heating of copper sulfate would create an unknown liquid in a test tube and that unknown liquid would be sufficient to test for its identity. The hydrate that was used in this experiment was copper sulfate.

Methods

At the beginning of this experiment,.77grams of copper sulfate was heated and the liquid that developed due to the heating was allowed to evaporate. After the copper sulfate was heated and dried it was allowed to cool. At that time, it was measured again. Those results were used to design the second part of the experiment so that the appropriate amount of copper sulfate would be used. After the dry copper sulfate was cooled and measured, deionized water was added to the substance and the reaction was observed.

During the second part of this experiment, a piece of tubing was heated and bent into an "L" shape. This tube was placed in a rubber stopper. The rubber stopper with the tube was placed in a test tube that contained 18.06 grams of copper sulfate. The other end of the stopper was placed in a small test tube in order to collect the liquid that was generated by the experiment. The test tube and its contents were held above a lit Bunsen burner in order to heat the copper sulfate. While the copper sulfate's temperature rose, an unknown liquid began to evaporate from the substance. This liquid was condensed and collected in the test tube that the opposite end of the "L" shaped tube was placed in. When there was no longer any moisture present in the copper sulfate test tube, it was allowed to cool. The test tube with the copper sulfate was weighed again. The liquid that was collected was allowed to cool. The liquid was weighed and measured. The liquid was then heated to check its boiling point in order to detect its identity.

The third step of this experiment was done in order to check the results of the boiling point of the unknown liquid. Deionized water was heated and its temperature was measured using the same thermometer that was used to read the temperature of the unknown liquid.

Results

Amount of copper sulfate at beginning, grams Amount of copper sulfate recovered, grams Loss, grams Percent loss Liquid collected g and mL Density of the unknown liquid Boiling point of unknown liquid

Test #1 .77 .55 . % X X X

Test # 18.06 1.6 5.7 % 5.06g/ 5.0mL .7 g/mL 4 C

During the first test .77 grams of copper sulfate was used and .55 grams of copper sulfate was recovered after the experiment. There was a loss of . grams. It was found to be a % loss (Example ./.77 ᠐ 100 = %). In the second part of the experiment 18.06 grams of copper sulfate was heated and 1.6 grams was recovered. There was 5.7 grams lost. That was calculated to be a % loss. There was 5.0mL of liquid recovered in this process. It was found to weigh 5.06 grams. The density was calculated to be .7 g/mL (example 5.06g/5.0mL=density). The unknown liquids boiling point was found to be 4 degrees Celsius. The liquid was light blue and a pungent smell was noticed.

The same thermometer that was used to measure the temperature of the unknown liquid water was also used to measure the deionized water. The deionized water had a boiling point of 7 degrees Celsius.

Discussion

The chemical formula for this reactant is CuSO•5H0 so the liquid that condenses in the upper part of the test tube due to the heating of the reactant should be H0; however, the liquid that was recovered had a light blue tint and a pungent odor was noticed. The boiling point for the unknown liquid was three degrees Celsius less than the boiling point of H0, also H0does not have a pungent smell nor does it have a light blue tint; in fact, it is a substance that appears to be clear. It is apparent that some of the copper sulfate got into the liquid that was being recovered. This more than likely happened during the heating process, and it was because the tube was pointed downward instead of pointing it slightly up so that the copper sulfate would not run down into the liquid. The liquid came from the copper sulfate while it was being heated. While the copper sulfate was being heated it changed color. It went from a rich dark blue to a light blue color. This color change was due to the evaporation of the H0 from the copper sulfate. When all the liquid had been recovered and the copper sulfate was cool, a drop of deionized water was added to the copper sulfate. When this was done the copper sulfate immediately turned back into the rich dark blue color it was when the experiment began. The material appeared dry even though the deionized water was added to it. This shows that copper sulfate is a true hydrate.
