Although HawthorneÕs Young Goodman Brown was written during the end of the PuritanÕs grasp on American culture, their beliefs are shown throughout the story. HawthorneÕs insights come not from his own beliefs but those his ancestors had towards obedience, religion and conventional morality. Young Goodman Brown gives insight to the cultural values of the early 1800s and the authorÕs own struggle with his faith. Such a term as religious freedom, for example, did not mean for Puritans the unrestricted choice among varieties of worship or non worship as we take for granted today. Rather it meant the opportunity to enforce in a whole community, unchallenged by the English Church or king, their particular forms of Puritan worship ( Porter, Terrie, Gordan 18).

The Puritans held many religious beliefs dealing with obedience, morality, and hierarchy but they truly focused on three blue laws (laws based on church ideas). The Absolute Sovereignty of God says that the Puritans believed that God is all - mighty and asserts His influence in every part of human life. Original Sin and Total Depravity says that Puritans believed man to be naturally evil and depraved. Each child was taught that man was born evil from the New England Primer, In AdamÕs fall/We sinned all. The last of these Puritan beliefs is Predestination and Unconditional Election which says that manÕs fate, through AdamÕs fall, is now predestined by God. Man canÕt achieve his salvation by doing good; he must instead wait, hoping that God will choose him for salvation from other flawed souls.

Puritan belief was centered around these three laws conforming the early American culture into their own. When Young Goodman Brown was written, Hawthorne chose to question those laws that had been instilled in his family for generations. He suggests to the readers of the that time that maybe they arenÕt born in sin and that what they do in life does matter. During the time it was written, around 186, America was going through major changes

as a culture. Minority groups of women and blacks were fighting for civil and legal rights, the

railroad had become an important tool for travel and Charles Dickens, Edgar Allen Poe and Ralph Waldo Emerson were important writers of that time, who spoke for the new ways of transcendentalism.

America was also moving out of an instilled tradition of Puritan belief. Due to this change of values, Hawthorne seized an opportunity to wake up New England with Young Goodman Brown. Through this story Hawthorne is able to show readers the innocence of a man who after witnessing evil in the flesh is no longer able to even squeeze joy out of life. The author dared to write of a fate of a man that was not textbook. From beginning to end the reader witnesses that Goodman Brown is starting to lose whatever faith that he had to begin with. In the beginning Brown is asked by the devil why he was late and he replied, Faith kept me back awhile (Clayton 76). The underlining of this quote could easily say that not his wife Faith but instead his conscience and his own faith in God kept him. Later, after meeting with Goody Cloyse and the minister and Deacon Gookin, he screams into the forest for his faith and proclaims, My Faith is gone! There is no good on earth, and sin is but a name. Come, devil! for thee is this world given. (80) In the end Brown cries Faith! Faith! Look up to Heaven, and resist the Wicked One! (8) Whether or not his Faith betrayed him or not, young Goodman Brown will never know. What now lies in his heart is opposite of every Puritan manÕs upbringing that through GodÕs forgiveness, man can be saved. Goodman Brown believes now that he is eternally damned to hell. His innocence was lost, and he was not able to save his own fate. HawthorneÕs view of life in this story focuses more on the effects of a personÕs decisions. W hat you do in life is important, you are judged by your actions.

Hawthorne used the changing times of America to express his own feelings towards Puritanism when writing Young Goodman Brown. The story dares to focus on topics that the

respectful, industrious scholars of 17th century Puritans would have never thought of.

Conditioned of the three blue laws of Puritanism, many Americans had the same mind set about religion as Hawthorne. He then chose to breakaway from this conditioning and showed a new way to get to God. Young Goodman Brown is a story about the never-ending battle of good and evil and one manÕs journey into the unknown. Before the story was written, many New England natives had not yet taken this journey due to the constricting values of Puritanism. With the changes America was going through, the break from Puritanism and this haunting tale these natives begun to question their fate and the fate of their fatherÕs. Young Goodman Brown will forever challenge the mind of anyone who calls themself a religious person and the worldÕs current battle of religion can only add to its power.

Media is a mirror of the society. Everything good and bad happening in the world is reflected in the media. People sitting elsewhere in the world are made aware of any events happening in other part of the world by the media. However, it's the sole responsibility of the media to reflect the picture in its true colours.

I would agree with the author's proposition to the extent that certain sections in a media, say, a few channels in a television or a particular news paper or a magazine, may be biased. And in certain cases where there main motive is to make profits and not to bring the truth to the people. Or in cases where the media wants to increase its readership by relying on making an event scandalous, will the statement stand true. However, such mediums form a very attenuated part of the society. More so, the readers of today are wise and alert of the ongoing event around them. And can well distinguish between right and wrong.

Why do we forget that it is only through the media that we come to know about the heroes of the world. I should admit that in the society of today one will find very few heroes around him. Here, by heroes I refer to people who do something out of ordinary. Not what a common man would or dare to do. One would not find a person doing something heroic around him everyday. But there are a lot of people in the other parts of the world and even in his own country for that matter. Now how does he come to know about them?? It is only through the media. Else, the hero will remain known only to a limited people around him and remain anonymous to a large no of people far away from him.

Cheap Custom Essays on Reputation of a hero subjected to media scrutiny gets eventually diminished.

Secondly, it is through the recognition and praise of the people that a hero will be motivated. A person is not always hungry of power or money as a reward for his act. At times just a little recognition or a pat on the back will suffice to reward him and boost his morale. What does a fire-fighter gets when he rushes into a building blazing into flames to rescue a small child trapped in there?? Just self-satisfaction and will to perform his duty. And a little recognition of his courage would do wonders to his morale. And what if the event is broadcasted on television?? Wouldn't he be happily and motivated towards his job? Definitely, Yes. He will do his job with more enthusiasm and passion. And what about the million of people who watched his heroic act on television. Even if this act of his is able to inspire 1 more man, the count of hero's in our society will increment by one. What I want to suggest that this is a cumulative effect. And the main source of this cumulative effect is the media.

For example, India celebrates its Independence day on 15th August every year. On this day there is carried out a procession of all the children who have done some heroic act in one or the other way. This is telecasted nation wide on televion and broadcasted on radios. It forms the main news of the newspapers the next day. So what is media doing in this regard?? It is enhancing the image of heros and bringing their stories not our homes and in our lives and making us proud of them.

During the time India was under British rule and there was widespread revolution going on in the country to overthrow the British rule, in many parts of the country many newspapers, like Punjab Kesri, were banned. The rulers said that the news and contents were causing unrest and violence among the people. What the newspapers were actually doing was that it was bring the stories of resistance offered by Indians to the rulers in one part of the country to the other part of the country and inspiring people to follow suit in their area. It was conveying stories of heroism of people into the masses on a large scale and thereby inspiring people. This act in no way was tarnishing the image of heroes as the statement of the author states.

However, there have been cases in which the images of people have been distorted and presented to the people by media. But these are very few cases and not noteworthy. What I believe is that though its entirely upto the media authorities to decide as to what kind of news it wishes to publish, in the world of today, every common man is alert and aware to be easily fooled by any false news passed onto him. There might be differences in opinions of the different sources of media but that's just the point of view of people and nothing to do with the tarnishing of image of any hero.

In sum, I would say that media plays a major part in forming an opinion among masses. And that there might be some media sources who for there selfish motive might try to make every news scandalous, might that be on the cost of soiling a heros image, there a other sources that are manifold in number who would present a clear picture. And such sources outweigh the profit-making source in number to a large extent.

Doe Season Andys Epiphany

The process of finding out who one is can be very turbulent and confusing. Through growing up one goes through so many different changes in terms of ones personality and deciding who they are and what they want to be. The little girl in David Kaplans Doe Season goes through one of these changes, as do many other adolescents confused about who they are, and finds out that there are some aspects of a persons identity that cannot be changed no matter how hard he/she tries.

Andy is a nine-year-old girl who doesnt want to grow up to be a woman. When she talks of the sea and how she remembers her mother loving it and how much she hated it is a clue that she prefers to be a boy. The sea is symbolic of womanhood and the forest is symbolic of manhood. Andy expresses extreme distaste for the sea and a curiosity of the woods. She never really admits to liking the woods but the way she refers to it is always as if shes fascinated by it, but she doesnt know much about it. Therefore, she must go hunting as a test to see if she belongs. To contrast how she feels about the sea and the forest, she refers to the forest as deep and immense, while she refers to the sea as huge and empty. Andy sees the mans world as a wonderful, fascinating world while she sees the womans world as meaningless and empty.

Andy sees the changes into a woman on the horizon and she is scared by these changes because they are very confusing to her. This is why she trys to do man-type things such as hunting. To further confuse her, her father supports her striving to be part of the mans world. He refers to her as Andy even though her real name is Andrea and takes her with him to do manly things.

Custom Essays on Doe Season: Andy's Epiphany

The reader first gets a hint of the fact that Andy is unable to be a member of the male fraternity when she expresses her disliking of Mac. Mac is representational of the typical boy in this story. Andy thinks that Mac is stupid and is annoyed by all of the pranks and teasing he submits her to. This is an extension of her femininity, even though she doesnt quite grasp that fact. The next instance where she feels out of place in this man-world is, when at lunch, they are conversing about deer. She makes the comment that she sees a deer once behind their house and Charlie Spoon tells her that was because it is not hunting season. They then converse about how deer know when and when it isnt hunting season and start laughing about it. This whole conversation confuses Andy and makes her feel out of place. Later on, when they set up tents, she has to sleep in a tent with Mac. The things that Mac talks to her about before they go to sleep make her feel uncomfortable. First he asks her if shes ever seen someones pecker and that makes her feel uncomfortable. Mac then talks to her about gutting a deer and it makes her think about how it would feel if someone did that to her. Two times during the story Andy sees deer. One time when she is gathering firewood and another when she takes a walk on her own. The reason she is able to see these deer is because the deer dont think she poses any threat. Due to her feminine nature, the deer can tell that she is a girl and dont think she means to do them harm. This is what leads to Andy to ultimately realizing that she doesnt want to be part of the male society. The last time she sees a deer she leads everyone to it. Her dad then talks her into shooting the deer. When Andys father begins to gut the deer Andy has her epiphany. At that point she realizes that she cant become part of the male society. This causes her to go running from everyone as she is forced into her nature and forced to become part of the inevitable, female society.

Andys father takes her hunting as a test. The hunting trip is an initiation test to see if she has what it takes to be accepted into the mans world. She fails the test when she feels bad about shooting the deer and runs in the other direction when her father and Charlie Spoon go to gut the deer. The fact that she doesnt like shooting the deer, which is the main goal of hunting, is evidence that she doesnt like the male world.

In addition to her physical epiphany, Andy has an epiphany on a higher lever. The hunting trip leads Andy to the realization that even if she likes the male world, there are some aspects of who she is that she cant change regardless of how she feels about them and how hard she tries to change them. Andy embraces the male world as an attempt to escape from becoming a part of the female world only to be rejected by the male world through a humiliating experience that teaches her that she does not fit in. This rejection is what makes her realize that there are immutable changes about people. She cant be male material because of her nature and genetic makeup.

Andy is a girl who is scared of what a females world is and the confusion that goes along with becoming a female. This reaction to the female world drives her to try and be a part of the male world. Andy realizes at the end of the story that she doesnt want to be a part of the male world. She also realizes that no matter what she does, she cant deny her gender and that in some aspects a person must be satisfied with his/her identity.

Effect of Time on "Hard Times"

Adam Baumgardner

Hard Times, by Charles Dickens, was a representation of his time. Times were hard for children and adults alike. People who questioned what they were taught, often went through struggles and "hard times." Eventually, the people who were looked down on were the ones who really helped those in need. Throughout the book, there are many ironic instances.

Thomas Gradgrind was a man built on the idea that facts and statistics were the only truth in life and all that was needed to have a healthy and productive life. The only truth to him was his very own vision of the truth. Simply put, Thomas Gradgrind strived for perfection. He strived to be perfect, which is what his philosophy was based on, and he strived to make his children perfect and not to wonder. He raised his children never to wonder, never to doubt facts and to never entertain any vice or fancy. As soon as Gradgrind's children were old enough to absorb information, he was feeding them more lessons than they could handle. His children were brought up only knowing one way to live and that was the idea that if it is not fact, then it is false. He was emotionless, as were his children because they were brought up only knowing what they were taught by him. Eventually, as Gradgrind's children became older, what they were taught began to turn sour in their minds. Tom, Grandgrind's son, began to despise his father and all that his father had taught him and thus began to rebel. He took to smoking and gambling, which eventually led to his downfall. Tom had grown up to become a sycophantic, self-absorbed parasite. He had turned out the exact opposite as hoped.

Order Custom Essay on Hard Times

Thomas Gradgrind had raised his children never to wonder, but wondering intrigued them. Gradrgind had observed his children peeking into a circus tent because they were curious as to what was inside. The children were scolded for being curious, but seeds were planted into their minds of how there was more to life than what they had been taught. Furthermore, Tom, a usually well-behaved child, began to rebel after this incident. At first, he was rebelling in his mind, but eventually, after Tom moved out of his father's house, so began his more visible rebellion. Once more, this is exactly what Mr. Gradgrind had tried to avoid while raising his children.

When Tom Gradgrind was in serious trouble because of his gambling debts, he confided in his sister, Louisa. Louisa was brought up to be emotionless and to not feel compassion, concern, or sympathy. But when her brother Tom was in need of his sister's help, she, for the first time, felt love for her brother.

Josiah Bounderby was a fraud. He had lied about his childhood to make people feel sympathy for him. Josiah Bounderby was a middle aged factory owner who was quite wealthy. Bounderby looked at his workers as "hands." To him, his workers were nothing more than robots. He felt that he was above them because of his wealth and his position. He thought that the penniless worker had no souls and no feelings. However, as Bounderby later is proved to be a fraud, it turns out that he was at the same level, if not lower, than the people he described that worked for him.

Sissy Jupe, a child who had been scolded for her inability to accept fact over fancy, was not approved by Mr. Gradgrind. He tried everything in his power to make Sissy Jupe more like him, but he could not because she had been raised by loving people who taught her that there is more to life than just statistics. After Sissy Jupe began living with the Grandgrind family, she began to rub off on them. After observing her and her values, the entire Gradgrind family saw that she was a genuinely caring and sympathetic girl and that's when they started to notice that something about then was flawed; something in their life was missing. Sissy Jupe showed the Gradgrind family what it feels like to love and how it feels to care. A child who was scorned for being herself was teaching a supposed "perfect," family values they did not possess and they were grateful.

Along with the affects of time on personality and the importance or lack there of for "facts vs. fancy," there is many references of time to natural time and "man-made" time. Time in the Grindgrind family as well as Coketown is habitual, an example of this is when it is said that "Time went on in Coketown like its own machine." For the story itself, "Hard Times" moves in natural time, and the seasonal change constitute "the only stand that ever was made against its direful uniformity." The most obvious example of time passing in "natural time," is that of the three sections to the story; titled "Sowing," "Reaping," and "Garnering." The three titles represent agriculture and the planting and harvesting process, as they relate to the change of seasons.

Time, and its physical and mental effects on life is a major theme of "Hard Times." It shows that no matter where your from, what time period you grew up or what life you've lived, each person has their own identity and it is easily affected by those of higher persuasions. Self-interest is the downfall of life and the life of those around you influence. The regularity of time in Coketown is changed only by that of the seasonal, or natural time that all get to enjoy and have no influence over. Please note that this sample paper on Hard Times is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Hard Times, we are here to assist you. The Youth of Today

A Misunderstood Generation

Previous generations have set expectations for todays youth, stating that those born between 17 and 14, my generation, the Y generation, can easily be categorized into stereotypical groups. My generation is prejudged with stereotypical labels such as the lazy generation, the rebellious generation, and even the violent generation, each label more degrading as the extensive list continues. The previous living generations which are composed of Generation X , the Baby boomers, Silent generation , and the WWII Generation, have set such a standard that is socially unacceptable for my generation today. The perspective of one's morality has changed through the years clouding the previous generations' ability to foresee the potential of my generation. With each appointed demeaning title, my generation only grows stronger.

Often criticized as slackers, "Y" kids are nonetheless characterized as lazy, spoiled, and indifferent. Our generation does have many opportunities for success, I agree; as did the preceding generations. But unlike the previous generation, which was underemployed and pessimistic about its economic future, my generation is terrestrial and optimistic about its prospects.

Certainly Generation Y, as a group, is more wanted, cherished, and often overprotected by their parents, as we should be. Today's youth must face everyday dangers such as drugs, violence, and even terrorism. As we have shown, my generation approaches these hazards with great poise. We are a pretentious group. We set goals and intend to exceed them. My generation is indeed hard working. Nine out of ten college freshmen have specific goals for the next five years of their lives. Seventy five percent of them have done volunteer work in the past year. Two out of three say a career helping others is more important to them than one who produces an immense amount of income. Many of my peers are employed with a job, while managing a full time schedule at school. Generation Y is very much alive and even passionate about their views and values. We are leaders. We are the future.

Torn, baggy clothes, inverted baseball caps, colored hair, body piercing, and tattoos are often personified by previous generations as symbols of diminutive intellectual capacity. Preceding generations see my generation as rebellious, or delinquent, if you will. Body piercing and/or tattoos are merely emblems of our identity. These attachments are often used as clever Millennial decoys symbols designed to conceal huge reserves of guile, determination, and worldliness. Indeed, our elders are correct. We are "rebels". Perhaps this is because we are not disciples of previous generations.

My father once told me a story that I now relate to our previous generations

Once there was a herd of sheep. This herd of sheep spent the majority of the day grazing in the pastures and doing everyday 'sheep' activities. The thing about sheep is that they tend to follow, or imitate the other sheep around them. The sheep were grazing in the pasture near a steep cliff. One of the sheep got too close to the edge and plummeted to its death to the jagged bottom. The other sheep saw this and one by one, each sheep, following their now deceased companion, each walked off the edge of the cliff.

"What's the moral to the story," my father asks me. When I have no response, he answers his own question, "Don't be a sheep."

My father had a good point. "Don't be a sheep." Though those sheep knew the consequences of walking off that cliff, they did it anyways. I would classify our previous generations as sheep. History continues to repeat itself. As oppose to learning from past generations' mistakes, the next generation continues to mimic the mistakes of those before them. My generation will not be referred to as sheep. The youth of today know the mistakes of those in the past, and have learned from them. Consequently, we are labeled as incompliant. Indeed, we are. We are a generation of self-confidence and independence. We set our goals and reach for our dreams. Generation Y is composed of variety, and a scrimmage for identity, not one composed merely of sheep.

The generation of today has even been described as the "Angry/Violent Generation." In the late 0s, we were implicated as a disturbed and violent generation when Paducah, Littleton, Springfield, and Conyers grabbed the headlines. But it must be understood that these tragedies were due to a select few, a few bad apples in which every generation contains.

Generation Y grew up with the specters of crack cocaine, designer drugs, and the AIDS epidemic. They watched terrorism become a U.S. phenomenon with the World Trade Center, Oklahoma City, and Atlanta Summer Olympics bombings. They were bombarded with violence-packed video games and sexually charged advertising, television and movies. Still, the last I have heard on the news, crime rates in teens are at a plummet, including teen drug use, teen drunk driving accidents, and teen suicide rate is lower than it has been in decades.

Rather than being described as a negligent, delinquent, violent generation, the generation of my peers and I should be characterized as ambitious, independent, and optimistic. Give us all the smug expressions you please. Compose your conversations of unfair criticism directed toward my generation. Life is unfair. We can take it. The youth of today is irrefragable. What doesn't kill us will only make us stronger.

Christians believe that choosing a partner for a relationship is an important decision in your life. A good relationship is based on various qualities, three of which are love, trust and faithfulness. These qualities are necessary for a relationship to survive long term, as they provide both security and stability.

Christians believe that pre-marital sex is wrong. Sex is considered to be part of a legal and religious contract and should therefore not to be practised outside of marriage. It also shows that there is commitment within the relationship. As a sexual relationship my result in pregnancy, it should be confined within a marriage. Children should be brought up in a secure and loving environment, and deserve to live as part of a family with both a mother and a father.

When choosing such a partner, the one extra factor that practising Christians would look for is that they be of the same religion. A relationship between two people of different religions may lead to problems in the future such as the wedding ceremony and the religion of any children that they may have. Two people of the same religion would share similar beliefs and thoughts.

Christians believe that commitment is best shown by getting married. One reason why they would aim not just to live with their partner is that in Mark 10 v 6- it says "But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. What therefore God has put together, let no man put asunder." This means that the purpose of a marriage is for a man and woman to come together as one and nothing and no one can break them apart.

Do my essay on Explain the principles that Christians believe should guide their personal relationships. CHEAP !

Another reason is that Christians disagree with pre-marital sex, so if the couple just lived together then there would be temptation for this.

The last reason is that pre-marital sex may lead to children. Christians believe that children should be brought up in a secure environment i.e. married parents. If children are brought up outside of marriage then this goes against the bible.

Christians believe marriage is a sacrament. This means that Christians believe marriage is something made by God, that others cannot dissolve. This belief may affect their relationship now and in the future by making the couple work hard at their relationship, because God has put them together and blessed their marriage. In Ephesians 5 v - is says "Wives, be subject to your husband as to the lord… husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the Church and gave himself up for her…So husbands ought to love their own wives as their on bodies…For this cause a man shall leave his Mother and Father, and shall be united to this wife, and become one flesh with her." This means that the relationship between husband and wife should be the same as that of God and his church.

An event in Jesus' life that would make them think that he'd be pleased they were planning to marry is told in John v 1-11. This talks about how Jesus had been invited to a wedding in Cana, Galilee with his disciples and his mother. During the wedding the wine ran out so Jesus took six stone water jars and asked the servants to fill them with water. They did so and Jesus then asked them to give a glass to the master of the banquet. When he took a sip he complimented on the good wine. Jesus had performed a miracle. He had turned all the water into wine. He did this because he didn't want to spoil the wedding. This shows that the marriage must have been important to Jesus.

I think a Christian couple would want the marriage service to be in church. This is because the church is God's house, the vows are being made in front of God and the marriage is being blessed by God.

If a Christian couple suffer difficulties they might turn for advice about married life God when they pray. They may ask Christian couple because they may have had the same problem and overcome it. A vicar, priest or leader may guide them because they may have advice from the Bible. They could also contact an organisation called RELATE because they are there especially for Christians that are having problems and need advice.

A Christian couple may pray to God for advice about their relationship because God is able to guide the relationship through prayer.

Office Automation and Software

In the fast paced world of today, anything that can make things easier or save someone time is a must have. We have four types of office automation and three group software programs that each have their own advantages and disadvantages.

The first type is unified messaging. We utilize the conveniences of e-mail and voice mail. The main advantage of e-mail is saving money on long distance phone calls. Our company saves thousands of dollars in long distance charges because most of the time an e-mail can get the same message across that phone calls used to. One disadvantage of e-mail is it takes a little bit longer to type a message than to just call someone. Also, messages sent through e-mail may sometimes get misunderstood. Tone of voice and body language can be an indicator to the meaning of a comment, without those, it is sometimes hard to understand the person's message. When using e-mail we need to remember that the other person cannot see or hear our thoughts.

The second type of office automation we use is facsimile. One advantage to the facsimile is that it is a time saver. Instead of mailing documents and waiting days, we use faxes to send them immediately. The obvious disadvantage is that we can only fax a copy of a document and cannot send the original. We still need mail to send originals. Another disadvantage of faxes is the lack of confidentiality. Faxes can get intercepted on either end and leave a person skeptical about using fax for anything classified.

The third type of office automation is electronic filing. Since we use computers for the majority of our work here, we need a place to save it all. We have numerous drives to save our work in and each employee has their own file to save their work. The advantage of having our own files on the hard drive is space.

There is much more space available than on CDs or floppy disks. The disadvantage of saving our data on the different drives is not being able to access that work from home or on the road. I guess this could be looked at an advantage to some people who don't want to work from home. We also still have floppy disks to save documents on. They do not get used very much because any computer we log on to we can access the hard drives. The disadvantages to floppy disks are the space. They cannot hold as much data as a hard drive. The advantage of floppy disks is that we can take them anywhere.

The final type of office automation is image processing. Copy machines are probably used more than any other office equipment. When it comes to our aircraft paperwork and logbooks, we do not use electronic. The FAA still requires paper logbooks therefore most paperwork is copied and copied some more. The huge advantage of having copy machines is that a duplicate can be made quickly. Many times we are in a hurry to get an aircraft out the door and do not have time to enter data into our Computerized Maintenance Program so I make copies of all of the paperwork and enter it at a later time. Without copy machines our printers would get much more use than what they were made to handle. The only disadvantages I can see with copy machines are if they are jammed or broken. Sometimes I spend too much time trying to get a machine to work and end up reprinting it. In that way, I guess copy machines can be a headache to people who rely on them in a pinch.

The first of the three group collaborative software programs that we have here is Lotus Notes. Lotus Notes is our e-mail and organization software program. Besides e-mailing others, we also use it to schedule appointments, keep track of "to do" items, and organize addresses and phone numbers. I use Lotus Notes religiously.

I rarely write anything down on a paper calendar because it is so much easier to schedule things in Lotus, which will eventually remind me of them. That is one advantage to using Lotus, another is having a central location for everything. I do not use a rolodex or have numbers scattered about, they are all in one place. A disadvantage to Lotus is that it runs on the "L" drive and if it is down so is our e-mail. We can always use our own accounts like Yahoo, etc. but for people that do not have any other e-mail, it can be a pain when it is down. The second group software program is our Intranet. Our Intranet can be accessed from any computer at any site. It gives our company a good way to communicate information across all our sites. A huge advantage of the Intranet is having one place to go to find information about the company. It is all right at our fingertips. The disadvantage of the Intranet is that it is the only place to find some information so if it is down, we are left out in the cold.

The final group software program we have is our CD-ROM server. I used to work in the library so this one is near and dear to me. The CD-ROM server is a program that lets everyone see the publications we hold on CD-ROM in our library. It runs on a remote desktop so each user that logs in is seeing the same icons and data. The disadvantage to that is anyone can go on and change the settings and believe me they do. The advantage to having our CD-ROMs on a server is that the mechanics can look at the pub they want without having to go to the library and check them out.

Those are the main office automation and software programs we have that I know about and use. I am sure there are others that different departments use that I don't know about.
