Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan was born on January 17, 16 in Brooklyn, New York and was raised in

Wilmington, North Carolina. He has two brothers, is married, and has three kids. He is considered by

many to be the greatest basketball player of all time (Kornbluth). My focus will be on his hardships,

accomplishments, and people who influenced him.

First, I would like to touch on some general information about Michael. He wears number on

his jersey because he considered it to be half of his brothers number, 45. He had wanted 45 because it was

his brothers number and he deeply admired his brother, but he was on the same team as his brother so he

needed to pick a different number. His most well known superstition is that he wears his University of

North Carolina basketball shorts under his game shorts.

When Michael was a kid, his favorite sport was not basketball. In fact, it was baseball. He was a

pitcher on a little league team. He played baseball because he was short (Kornbluth). Later in his life, he

would try to leave the NBA and play major league baseball.

Michael was not always rich. His parents had to work two and three jobs each to support the family.

Before Michaels dad built him a basketball court in his back yard Michael shot, basketballs into a trash can

(Kornbluth).

Michael was not always good at basketball, either. People told Michael that he was too short to

play basketball. Michael now stands six feet six inches tall. He also went to the school gym before school

to shoot baskets, stayed after school to shoot baskets, and could be found in the school gym on weekends

shooting baskets. He also played his brother, Larry, one-on-one in basketball. His brother was only a year

older than Michael was, but he was much better and taller than Michael was. Michael would often times

lose and end up getting in a fight with his brother. This caused Michael to be extremely determined to

succeed at basketball (Kornbluth).

In his sophomore year of high school, he tried out for the Varsity team. He did not make it, so he was

placed on the Junior Varsity team. On the J.V. team, he averaged 8 points per game. He thought this

would get the attention of the Varsity team coach. It did. However, it was not in the way he hoped it

would. The assistant coach for the Varsity team was sick so they needed someone to hand out towels to the

players while on a playoff road trip. That is what Michael got to do (Kornbluth).

When he finally got on the Varsity team in his junior year, he still worked hard. He practiced with both the

Varsity and the Junior Varsity teams and continued to go to the school gym and work on his shooting

(Kornbluth).

Michaels hard work would attract many scouts from colleges (Kornbluth). He would go to the University

of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In college, he was a very good player. In his junior year, the Tar Heels

went to the NCAA Championship game where he would hit a clutch game winning buzzer beater to win the

NCAA Championship.

In 184, Michael played for the United States Olympic basketball team. Michael was among the best

college players in the country and helped the team win the gold medal. Michael was also part of the 1

United States Olympic basketball team. The team was composed of the best NBA players and was

nicknamed The Dream Team. This Olympic team also won the gold medal

Michael was drafted after his junior year in college and would be the third pick in the first round of the

184 NBA Draft. He went to the Chicago Bulls, who at that time were a struggling team. With Michael on

their team, they started to win. Michael was the NBAs rookie of the year in 185. He would also be a

NBA all-star in his rookie year and a NBA all-star game starter in 187, 188, 18, 10, 11, 1,

1, and 16. In 188 Michael would win the first of four league MVP honors, the others being 11,

1, and 16. He was named the MVP of the 188 and 16 NBA all-star games. In 11, the Bulls

won their first NBA Championship led by Michael Jordan. Michael was the MVP of the 11 NBA Finals.

The next year Michael led the Bulls to a second straight NBA Championship and was the 1 NBA Finals

MVP. The following year, the Bulls won their third straight NBA Championship. Again, Michael was the

MVP of the NBA Finals (www.nba.com). His list of achievements !

for his first career in basketball go on and on.

On August 14, 1 Michaels father, James Jordan was murdered (Lee). After the 1 NBA

season Michael retired from basketball (www.unc.edu/~lbrooks/jordan.html). Michael would now try

baseball with the Birmingham Barons. During the 18 months Michael was away from basketball, he would

have his jersey retired in the United Center, have a bronze statue of him in front of the United Center and

would draw enormous crowds to minor league baseball games. After 18 months, Michael got tired of

baseball, especially because he was being criticized because he was not too good at baseball. Michael

would come back to basketball with 17 games left in the regular season. The Bulls would make the

playoffs that year, but, unfortunately, get defeated by the Orlando Magic.

When he returned to basketball the list of awards and achievements kept flowing in as if he had

never quit the game.

In addition to his great feats and huge paycheck ($5 Million this year), Michael also has major

advertising deals. These deals include companies and products such as Nike, Gatorade, and Wheaties. In

addition to all of his other accomplishments, Michael is also a movie star. He stared in Space Jam with

Bugs Bunny. He also has a restaurant in Chicago named after him.

All in all I believe that Michael Jordan is the best basketball player of all-time and will be

remembered as so for a long time to come. He is an even greater man for his donations to charities. What

makes his life so much more amazing is every hardship he has had to overcome.

Frederic Chopin

Frederic Chopin was a Polish composer and pianist who lived from 1810 to 1845. He wrote hundreds of pieces, mazurkas, concertos, preludes, nocturnes, polonaises, and sonatas. Almost everything he wrote was exclusively for the piano. He had his own unique poetic and lyrical style; his songs could be light and dreamy and yet dark and emotional at the same time. Known as "The Poet of the Piano", he is still considered the most important composer from the Romantic period, and it can be said that no one understood the piano better than him.

He was born Frederic Francois Chopin on February 4, 1810, at Zelazowa Wola, Poland. His mother was Polish and his father French. He started his musical training at an early age, starting up with the piano at age four. He wrote his first piece at age seven, a polonaise, and gave his first concert at the age of eight. From here on he was revered as a child prodigy.

Chopin made his musical debut in Vienna, Austria, and after that he played his two piano concertos (Concerto in F Minor, and Concerto in E Minor) in Warsaw. Then he decided to leave Poland to give concerts in Western Europe, never to return. Shortly after this however, the Polish insurrection broke out, and his travelling companions returned home. Chopin was then mainly inactive, and was plagued by anxiety of the upheaval at his home.

Custom Essays on Frederic Chopin

In September of 181 Chopin moved to Paris, twenty-one years old, and was immediately recognized for his talent. His musical training had been for the most part self guided, because there were no prestigious piano teachers where he grew up, but immediately people in France were trying to persuade him to enroll in strict and disciplined piano studies. His piano teacher from Poland observed "they have recognized genius in Frederic and are already frightened that he will outstrip them, so they want to keep their hands on him for three years in order to hold back something of that which nature herself might push forward."

Chopin now had the advantage of being a fresh, new, and free pianist. He has developed his own unique style, deriving from his influences such as violinistic singer Angelica Catalani, the nocturnes of Weber, and of course Mozart and Bach. His pieces had a somewhat familiar air to them, but were not harnessed by the strict form that everyone at the time followed. Unlike other romance composers, his paintings didn't depict love stories or paintings, they remained poetic yet personal. His works demanded a lot of hand coordination, and challenged even the most accomplished pianists of the time. The left hand would be rhythmic and unwavering, while his right hand would glide around in the melody freely. Chopin described his technique thus the left hand is the conductor; it must not waver or lose ground; do with the right hand what you will and can. This technique is called tempo rubato. An example of this technique can be found in Chopin's Berceuse (Lullaby), containing a repeating and jumping rhythm in the left hand, while the right hand plays a light, and beautiful melody that almost sounds improvised. Schumann was one of the first of his contemporaries to realize Chopin's unique and original style, using the now famous line "Hats off, gentleman. A genius!"

Chopin had soon become an established teacher of the piano with many pupils. He would give concerts in people's homes (which he preferred over large halls), and was now widely known for his innovation and skill. While visiting London in 187, Chopin started an intimate relationship with the French novelist George Sand. He moved with her and her children to the island of Majorca, where they lived in wretched conditions. Chopin began to show signs of tuberculosis. Despite his illness, he composed a great deal of his pieces at Mme. Sand's country house in Nohant. He made no public appearances for a span of six years, and became more and more frail. His music reflected this, and developed softer graduations.

Sand continued to nurse Chopin until their continued differences drove them apart. Although he was able to live comfortable on his fees as a tutor, he gave several more concerts in England, Scotland, and France, with his last in Paris. He died at age thirty-nine, and at his request his heart was taken to Warsaw and placed in the Holy Cross Church. His funeral was at the Madeleine, where Mozart's Requiem Mass was performed, and he is buried at Pere-Lachaise. According to legend, not one day has passed when flowers haven't been placed on his grave.

Chopin introduced new variations and techniques in familiar forms of music. His many Preludes varied in style, some could be powerful and intimidating, such as his Prelude in C Minor, and others could be slow and sad, like the Prelude in E Minor. He always stayed true to his Polish background, and his most written pieces were polonaises and country mazurkas. One of his most famous pieces is his Military Polonaise in A Major, and it is still widely celebrated in Poland.

Chopin is internationally known for his beautiful and melodic pieces, his emotional and personal style, and his mastery of his instrument. Once called "the Piano Bard, the Piano Rhapsodist, the Piano Mind, and the Piano Soul", his innovation influenced two generations of composers from Liszt and Rachmaninoff, to Debussy and Granados. Surely the piano would lack some of its prestige and power if he had never furthered its art so much. Sources

The Future of Management

Change is inevitable and constant. This extremely evident when we stop and take a look at our society over the last 100 years. We have gone from the horse and buggy transportation system to electric cars and cars that can self navigate for you. We have seen technology explode and take over our lives. Needless to say the business world did not remain stagnant during all the commotion. Management has made, and is still making, numerous adjustments to keep their organizations afloat. The future of management will be, to say the least, challenging.

There have been a number of new trends and emerging concepts flooding the management world. Technology is probably the most apparent. You can purchase anything, via the internet, and any company not yet establishing an E-based business will be left behind. Globalization is increasing and has brought about the need for telecommunication based networks. More and more we are seeing the use of items such as hand held computers, cellular phones, and even computerized badges. Companies are shifting now the way they deal with employees. For example, the term "emotional intelligence" has emerged which refers to a manager's people-oriented personality traits. Employees are now being empowered. They are encouraged to be innovative and express any ideas they may have to improve the company's current processes. Businesses are also moving toward more horizontal structures organized around basic processes. In addition, they are building more team-based organizations opposed to the traditional management structures.

Analyzing recent management strategies, leads me to believe that we will see more changes occur within the four management functions; planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. The planning function involves factoring in enormous amounts of information. You have to set objectives on numerous activities including forecasting and ultimately strategic planning. There is so much information to be gathered that this process is time consuming. I feel changes will be made to reduce the information gathering process. Companies will keep track of the information needed, with the use of computers and new programs, so that at any given moment they can print these reports. This would allow them to spend more time actually examining the current situations and setting premises rather than wasting time gathering the information. Companies may also change their strategic plans and visions on a more frequent basis. The same visions and goals that were relevant 10 years ago need to be re-evaluated.

We are already seeing the organizing function being restructured and I feel this will continue. A majority of the large businesses have shifted to a team-based culture, but this could still be improved upon. Smaller teams are proven to work more efficiently and the way the teams are currently organized they are quite large. Companies may begin to see that the quality produced by a large team could be improved upon if the team was minimized. They may also see an increase in competitiveness within the teams, which for certain types of businesses could be dangerous. If the teams are so busy competing with each other the quality of their work could be compromised, if they were rushing to complete a task.

Leadership is often confused with the term management. Leadership, influencing others to work willingly towards the goals that have been established, is just one aspect whereas management is a combination of all four functions. Recent changes in leadership are proving to have positive effects. Lower level employees are now getting more recognition allowing them to feel a sense of worth and take ownership in the companies they work for. These changes are occurring slowly but I feel will continue. Happy employees are good employees, and more and more companies are realizing amazing things are possible when employees want to work. We now know what type of leadership we want for the future, so the challenge will be finding managers who can provide this type of leadership. They need to be able to balance their authority along with their motivational skills while maintaining their "emotional intelligence." Since the trend is moving in that direction we may see seminars, college courses, new techniques and tactics all focused around the "new" skills companies are looking for. We may also see more communication and psychology required for management, which would give them a better understanding of how people think and how to motivate them.

We will continually search for ways to improve upon controlling. Controlling was, in fact, one of the first functions to be computerized in the business world. Technology has allowed control management to be so much more time efficient. Production, schedules, orders and inventory reports are accessed directly from the computer. Financial statements and budgets are no longer month long projects. We must continue to find new ways to monitor measure and compare so we then can take corrective action. I can only foresee companies improving upon and changing their controlling process in the future with the use of new systems and computer programs that have yet to be developed. Companies could also look to outside organizations, experts in computers and controlling, to come in and make improvements for them. Hiring an outside agency can sometimes be easier than developing new systems all on your own or paying salary for an employee to develop a new plan.

We are seeing how the recent changes are resulting in the functions being modified. We will continue to see the functions change with the new developments and in the business world we are forever searching for ways to improve quality, cut cost, and improve effectiveness. Without realizing and making the necessary adjustments when the world around us grows and moves forward, companies cannot survive and meet the public's needs.

In every club in every city there is a trend of the synthetic drug known as ecstasy. There have been cases of death and long term damage due to taking it. Though doctors do not exactly know the total truth about what it does, they do know that probably nothing is good about it.

Methylenedioxymethaamphetamine or MDMA the chemical which is known as ecstasy, E, or x, is a stimulant and hallucinogenic drug that is made in pill form and is ingested. It is known to cause euphoria through out the body and a better sense of sight and sound. You can find it in any suburban town mostly because it is an expensive habit that costs about 2 to 3 dollars to make and is sold anywhere from 10 to even 40 dollars a pill.

The first preparation and description of MDMA was through a patent issued by the E. Merck Pharmaceutical firm in Darmstadt, Germany, in 1912. The drug was developed as an appetite suppressant but never became commercially successful. It resurfaced in the 1950's as a method of lowering inhibitions in patients undergoing psychoanalysis.1 The patients said that the MDMA gave them a sense of closeness with other people. They believed it let down barriers or filters to free communication and aided in the introspective analysis of one's psyche.2

Order Custom extacy paper

Then in 1983 there was a study done at a college on 29 volunteering students and medical professors, in which they ingested MDMA. There out come seemed pretty much the same, it said MDMA was found to be an adjunct to insight oriented psychotherapy and to facilitate intimacy and communication between people.3 But in July of 1985, the drug was put on a schedule 1 category by the food and drug administration, which made it nearly impossible to get your hands on it. Because of the FDA choice, the use of MDMA for psychoanalytical purposes was stopped. After all the hearings from the FDA about the use of MDMA is when the trend of adolescence started using.

They think the recreational use began in England, Ireland and college campuses in the U.S. and the drug use started to increase. By the 1990's it exploded, cases of ingestion reported by the Irish poison information center increased 130 percent from January 1991 to June 1992.4 Recreational use by college students surveyed at a private southern university increased from 8 percent in 1986 to 24 percent in 1991.5 MDMA started to blowup in the early 1990's because of the new trend called "raves" where hundreds of kids of the age from 14 to 24 would take up abandoned warehouses and relieve the stress of adolescence.

Though not known exactly how MDMA effects humans, they've noticed in studies of rat's, rabbits, and non human primates that the serotonergic neurons were damaged. Human studies of the effect of MDMA, which have been limited to indirect analysis through assays of cerebrospinal fluid obtained from patients, have shown conflicting results. Some studies have found a reduction in serotonin metabolites in the cerebrospinal fluid, suggesting a general deppression or loss of serotonin from the brain. And another showed no such loss of the serotonin metabolites.6 the results were difficult to figure out because the study was uncontrolled. In Europe they are now doing controlled tests on MDMA to see if it can be used for post traumatic stress disorder, and testing the neurotoxicity in humans as well.

For these tests, the animals are injected with doses up to the equivalent of 45 street doses of MDMA over a period of several days. Changes in the brains of apes and monkeys have been observed when the dosage was 5.o mg of MDMA per Kg or body weight twice a day for 4 days. This is the equivalent of a one to two average E tablets a day for a human weighing 125 lbs.7 So what that is saying is that

there loading the lab animals up with very large doses of MDMA, so doing tests on humans who use the drug makes it very hard for scientists to decipher how much they took and if it is that dangerous.

People have died on ecstasy but the numbers are so minute that it makes you think that tobacco and alcohol should be illegal to. No one really knows the cause of ecstasy related deaths but what they think, is that when you are ecstasy your body temperature rises and dehydration occurs. So what the have seen in most of these fatalities is that death occurred from the body over heating. It is very strange when the news and media hype up when someone dies on ecstasy when the death rate in the U.K. is from 5 to 8 a year. Compare these statistics with the equivalent for the drugs we use legally. Every year, 125,000 people die from smoking tobacco. A further 20,000 die alcohol related deaths. This does not include those people who die in car accidents or alcohol fueled violence. Emergency-room statistics for alcohol versus ecstasy show a similar trend- many more people get in trouble on alcohol than ecstasy.8

There are said to be six different ways to make MDMA. And you can find these ways on the internet rather easily.

You need some specialized equipment and some know how in organic chemical synthesis. Black market manufacturers recommend one to two years of undergraduate chemistry experience. Which make it not that difficult to make MDMA. But if the chemicals are not mixed exactly right or the ingredients are impure, it can cause the pill to be very potent which could cause excessive over heating of the body. Or the pill could be toxic, which is probably the only other reason for death on ecstasy.

I think if MDMA was made an over the counter drug and made legal there might not be any deaths from it. Because it would be pure and manufactured correctly. But since it is not people are still going to take there chances in getting that bad pill and possibly dying. My advice to people is don't do it and you wont know what it feels like, because in my opinion is that it is definitely horrible for you. Please note that this sample paper on extacy is for your review only. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on extacy, we are here to assist you. Bill Gates is the most successful business man in the world today, and he is also in the fastest growing industry in the world. "Most of Bills personal beliefs revolve around working hard and trying your hardest to succeed. He believes that if you are intelligent and know how to apply your intelligence you can accomplish anything. Bill thinks that if you don't work your hardest you will never succeed…"

Bill Gates, a onetime computer nerd, was the only chief executive Microsoft had until he decided to hand over the responsibility to his partner, Paul Allen. To the world, he was a symbol of American technology. To his executives, he was a hard-driving boss who preferred high-level technical discussions. Although he began Microsoft on a shoestring, his is not a rags-to-riches story (Cook 64-66). Instead, he was the prototype of the new digital generation.

Born October 8, 155, Gates and his two sisters were from a prominent Seattle family. His father, William Henry Gates Jr., was a partner in a Seattle law firm and his mother, Mary, was a regent at the University of Washington and a chairwoman of United Way International. (Gates, 15)

Bill Gates' first interest in computers began at Lakeside, a private school in Seattle that Gates attended. There he wrote his "first software program when I was thirteen years old. It was for playing tic-tac-toe" (Gates, 15). By the time he was thirteen years old, Gates was programming in the Basic computer language. The gangly and awkward child had turned pro by seventeen, selling his first program for $4,00. He spent a couple of years at Harvard University, but he was an unexceptional student, preferring all-night poker games and messing with computers to classes (Quittner, 1).

Bill Gates

It was at Lakeside that Gates met Paul Allen, who later became cofounder with Gates of Microsoft. There they became friends and "began to mess around with the computer". Back in the sixties and early seventies computer time was expensive. This is what drove Gates to the commercial side of the software business. Gates, Allen and a few others from Lakeside decided to get entry-level software programming jobs. This is where one of Gates' early programs was written. It was a program that scheduled classes for students. Gates added a few instructions and found himself nearly the only guy in a class full of girls. (Gates, 15)

When the first affordable small computer came out a machine called the Altair that sold in kit form for $400 Gates lost all interest in school. He had found his true love. He and Paul Allen --- whom Gates met while a student at Seattle's exclusive Lakeside Preparatory School --- moved to Albuquerque, N.M, establishing Microsoft in 175. (Gates, 15)

In 17, Intel released their first microprocessor chip, the 8008. Gates attempted to write a version of BASIC (Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) for the new Intel chip, but the chip did not contain enough transistors to handle it. Gates and Allen found a new way to use the 8008 and "started Traf-O-Data, a computer traffic analysis company" (Clayton 45). It worked well, however marketing their new machine proved to be impossible. "No one actually wanted to buy the machine, at least not from a couple of teenagers" (Gates, 15). Gates and Allen had less successful endeavors in starting a software company.

In 174, Intel announced their new chip, the 8080. The two college students sent off letters "to all the big computer companies offering to write them a version of BASIC for the new Intel chip. We got no takers" (Lyall, 14).

Bill Gates 4

While at Harvard, the cool thing to do was to slack off on class for most of the semester and try to see how well the student could do at the end. Steve Ballmer and Gates "took a tough graduate-level economics course together. The professor allowed his class to bet their whole grade on the final if they chose". Gates did just that, not studying until it was time for the final for the class all semester, studied for the final and got an A. (Economist, 14)

Gates went on leave from Harvard in 175. Microsoft's big economic break came in 180 when "IBM- the computer industry leader- asked Gates to develop an operating system for its new personal computer" (Clayton 45). IBM usually did not use external help in software design or hardware manufacture, but they wanted to release the first personal computer in less than a year. "IBM had elected to build its PC mainly from off-the-shelf components available to anyone.

This made a platform that was fundamentally open, which made it easy to copy". IBM bought the microprocessors from Intel and licensed the operating system from Microsoft. Microsoft bought some work from another company in Seattle and hired its top engineer, Tim Paterson. The system became known as the Microsoft Disk Operating System, or MS-DOS (Rohm, 14).

While Gates was still young, his competitors soon learned that there was a deep competitive spirit and even a ruthlessness that could not be hidden by his squeaky voice and thick glasses. The future of Microsoft was assured when Gates bought the rights to a computer operating system, improved it, and then sold it to International Business Machines Corporation for use with IBM's then revolutionary Personal Computer.

Bill gates 5

The name Personal Computer created the term "PC" and Gates' Microsoft Disk Operating System became known to almost every computer user as DOS. (Schlender 50-5)

The company grew with the PC into the country's largest software company. Gates himself became as close as possible to an industry superstar, eventually eclipsing even Steven Jobs, co-founder of Apple Computer, as the man most identified with America's dominance in the digital world (Fortune, 1). Abstract This experiment addressed the following central question Is it possible to distinguish different blood cells from other blood components using different staining procedures? Identical blood smears were stained separately using Wright-Giemsa and Periodic Acid-Schiff Staining methods illustrated in Dr. Jessen-Marshall's lab handout. An experimental slide underwent an alternative staining method. By following explicit instructions, smears produced dark-staining blood components for which they were explicitly intended. The results of this lab answered the central question affirmatively as blood components were easily identified under a microscope.

Introduction In this lab, some simple staining procedures will be learned along with the viewing of the stained cells. Also, the stains will be observed and identification techniques will be used to recognize different blood cell types. Is it possible for different types of blood cells to be distinguished from each other using different staining procedures?

If the blood cell smear were left in diastase for 15 minutes as opposed to 0 during the Periodic Acid-Schiff stain, then the cells would not stain as well, and therefore, be less visible under the microscope. The blood smear will not be as visible in this instance because the carbohydrates would not absorb as much of the stain.

Procedure First, the field of view of each magnification was measured and drawn to use for later reference. A stage micrometer was used to measure the 4x, 10x and the 40x objectives. These measurements will be used to estimate sizes of blood cells later in the lab.

Blood was drawn from Ben Liston's finger and drops were placed on slides. The drops were smeared thinly across the slides using the procedure illustrated in Dr. Jessen-Marshall's lab handout (Page 6, Lab Handout, Jessen-Marshall, 00). Smears were allowed time to dry before the staining processes began.

One slide was stained using the Wright-Giemsa method in order to identify blood cell. First the slide was dipped in the Wright-Giemsa for 10 seconds, a phosphate buffer for 0 seconds, rinsed in distilled water and permitted to dry.

Two slides were stained according to Periodic Acid-Schiff Staining method. Before the staining could occur the slides were fixed for ten minutes with absolute ethanol-formulin to improve stain quality. These slides were then rinsed under running tapwater for 10 minutes and then doused with distilled water. One slide was placed aside for examination later. Two blood smears were then placed in a 1% solution of diastase; one was placed in the jar for 0 minutes according to process outlined in the lab manual. The second slide, the experimental, was only placed in the solution for 15 minutes to observe the results if it had not been properly treated with diastase.

After the slides were placed in diastase, they were moved to the periodic acid solution for ten minutes. The slides were rinsed with distilled water, transported to Schiff's reagent and incubated for ten minutes in the fume hood. Slides were washing under running water and were counterstained with Harris Hematoxylin for three minutes. Afterwards the slides were washed in running water, dipped in ammonia water, rinsed with distilled water and allowed to dry.

Results

Staining the slides was successful because specific cell types were visible under a microscope when the correct staining procedure was followed. Under the 400x objective, of the Wright-Giemsa stain, Neutrophils and Basophils were identified as they were stained a darker hue (Figure A). The blood smear that underwent the PAS staining with the diastase treatment was found to contain Monocytes, which were also darkly stained (Figure B). The blood smear that underwent PAS staining without diastase treatment contained Platelets, which appeared black (Figure C).

The experimental blood smear slide that was left in the diastase treatment for only 15 minutes proved to be ineffectively stained for any visible blood component. This result supports the hypothesis that leaving a slide in diastase for an inadequate amount of time would result a failure to stain.

Discussion The central question was "Is it possible for different types of blood cells to be distinguished from each other using different staining procedures?" The hypothesis that was formulated was that if one altered the staining times by decreasing them, the stains would not take to the blood smears. The conclusion that was drawn from the experiments and careful observation was the blood smears, when left in diastase for 15 minutes less than the correct amount of time, failed to stain for any blood components. The data collected from the experimental slide supported this fact because there was no specific staining that made any blood component stand out. This blood smear appeared all pink colored with no cell definition.

In this experiment, multiple slides should be put through the procedures to rule out any random error. Also, more accurate timekeeping devices, such as a handheld stopwatch, could have been used as opposed to a wall clock with a minute hand. The results, other than the experimental, were pretty conclusive in that cell components took the stain and were easily identified. This procedure, when used in a laboratory setting, could be used to determine if an individual has a high count of any of the stainable blood components. In the future, this experiment could be repeated using a different experimental design in order to better understand the complex staining procedures.

Is there such a thing as an illegal interview question? The answer to this is technically yes; however "there is no single federal, state, or local agency or court that defines for all cases which interview questions are legal or illegal. Instead, a plethora of court rulings, legislative decisions, agency regulations, and constitutional laws combine to produce the often confusing and frequently changing list of what you can and can't ask a job applicant." Bell, Art. (date unknown) Update on Legal and Illegal Interview Questions. Retrieved October 7 00.

The legalities depend on the question the interviewer will ask the individual being interviewed. For example, are you a U.S. citizen? This would be an inappropriate question, but if it is worded to say, are you authorized to work in the United States, it would be appropriate. A question cannot be asked if it is meant to discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion national origin, or physical disabilities. Whenever an illegal based interview question is asked it is often not done on purpose but ignorance. Some employers simply do not know that it is illegal to ask questions like; Will you be getting pregnant any time soon? If an employer is unsure what questions they should be asking they could always check with an attorney before they begin their interview process. This will ensure that all legal avenues are covered.

If someone is asked a question that he or she believes to be inappropriate they do not have to answer. It is very important that only questions that are legal are asked and answered too. If the employer demands the person being interviewed answers certain illegal questions then that person probably doesn't want to work for that company. Bottom line, yes there are illegal questions but a little research before hand ensures that a productive interview process will occur.
