In the Theatetus how successful is Socrates' refutation of Protagoran Relativism?

The project of the Theaetetus is to unveil Plato's epistemology, and more directly what he takes to be the nature of knowledge. Theaetetus, a student of Theodorous, puts forth the proposition that knowledge is perception, a view that is attributed to Protagoras and is the crux upon which his most famous dictum rests

'Man is the measure of all things of those that are, that they are, and of those that are not, that they are not.'

To say that knowledge is perception is to say that what one perceives is true, so that the objects of perception are indeed knowledge. The dictum marks that each individual perceiver determines through his perceptions the nature of reality. The implication of the Protagorean definition of knowledge is the denial of any transcendental standard of truth, independent of the individual knower, to which the knower is subject. It is also a denial that there is a reality to be known independent of one's own perceptions either nothing exists beyond perception or whatever exists is unknowable. To assess how successful Socrates' refutation is we must first assess how it is achieved, and from this consider whether Protagorean relativism can still be worthy of merit.

To begin the refutation of Protagoras, Socrates first makes some preliminary objections. The first he construes is that one can not give such a special authority to man, as Protagoras gives by marking that "man is the measure of all things". Upon his theory it has to be the case that what is perceived by any perceiver is the 'measure of all things' for that perceiver. Thus man deserves no special authority, and Socrates uses the example of a pig's perception to press home this point. Protagoras' reply is that this is merely a debating point, however I agree with David Bostock on this that what Socrates has achieved with his first objection is the cornering of Protagoras using his own theory. Thus 'Protagoras himself can not be any better judge of truth than the ignorant audience which he mocks' . This seemingly debating point sets the tone for the major objections to follow, his vehicle for refutation is the use of Protagoras' theory against himself.

The second objection, which Socrates will later mark as again one of a 'Captious' nature concerns actual meaning which underpins perception. Socrates sees that we 'know what words and sentences mean, but we perceive only the words and sentences themselves and not their meaning.' This objection breaks down the Protagorean claim that what is perceived is knowledge as the must be an intermediary force that is discovering the meaning of perceived objects e.g. the mind. This objection is impressive as it can be seen as Socrates almost testing the water as it were, as it is upon this notion of an intermediary factor which he will build his own positive doctrine. Two other objections which Socrates marks which again are of a simplistic and captious nature are that

(i) If perceiving is knowing, then why does not hearing a foreign language lead to our knowledge of it? Or why does not seeing letters mean that one can read?

(ii) That one can know something by remembering it, but memory is not perception.

After these preliminary objections, Socrates allies with Protagoras out of fairness, and proposes a rebuttal of his own objections on behalf of Protagoras. He has Protagoras distinguish between what is true and what is better. While it may not be truer than that of someone else, one person's perception may nonetheless be better, if the majority makes this determination. Thus, if the majority decides that one mode of being (wisdom) is "better" than another mode of being (foolishness), then it is, so long as the majority does not change its collective mind. Thus Socrates establishes that there is a place for teachers- 'experts' like Protagoras- to help students learn to be "wise".

Socrates major objection draws upon his first preliminary one that he invoked. He points out the self-defeating character of an all-inclusive relativism, as proposed by Protagoras if "Man is the measure of all things," as Protagoras asserts, then the statement itself is relative, so that the opposite statement would be equally true if someone thought it be so. This means that in some cases, Protagoras would be wrong when he is right. To use a logical form to express this, where P stands for Protagoras' theory

 Either no-one believes P, or only Protagoras and his followers believe P

 If no-one believes P, then according to P it is not true for anyone

 If most people reject P it is "more false than true"

 According to P even Protagoras must agree that his opponents' belief that P is false, is itself true.

 Therefore not even Protagoras can accept P

Thus Socrates has placed his refutation of Protagorean relativism, yet how succesful is it? Its success should be judged as to what is established by the refutation. Plato has adapted Protagoras' Relativism to fit into his own epistemology. At best we can say that 'man is the measure of what he is at the time perceiving' . In essence Socrates has actually done nothing, for one who propounds a relativist thesis as Protagoras does refutes himself. Indeed if what he says is true then Protagoras can have no claim over our attention. To conclude this is an 'entirely satisfactory refutation of Protagoras' , for in its placement Plato clears the path, when coupled with the refutation of Heraclitus, to expounded his own thesis of knowledge. He adapts Protagoras 'perception' to fit within his own complex epistemology

How has Japan fared with it's economies booms and slumps? This investigation is based on stage 4 unit 1 of the Business and Economics A-level course, "What happens in booms and slumps?". The unit focuses how people and businesses are affected by booms and slumps, why they continuously appear and the governments role in helping to control these two events. The investigation will therefore focus on Japan and the way booms and slumps affect the Japanese businesses and people. To determine this the investigation will focus on Japanese economic growth, inflation, unemployment rates, trade and Government economic policies. It is true that in a boom there are large amounts of trade. High demand, high GDP, low unemployment and high inflation (more spending). In a slump the opposite is true. ŸRecession - High Unemployment, low wages, low demand ŸHigh Inflation - More spending, higher demand, higher prices, higher costs of production. ŸLow Inflation - Less spending, low demand, low costs of production. ŸDownward Multiplier Effect - This occurs when there is too much demand. Then when there is a slump a deficit occurs because of the surplus that might have occurred in the boom. It is difficult to begin to analyse the Japanese economy since the information about it is very mixed. On one hand we have the news that Japan is coming out of a recession and in the other that Japan is going into one. The information released by the government assures us that Japan is improving its economic stability, while the media and world banks tell the opposite story.The Bank Of Japan is looking to ease its monetary policy (control of interest rates to control bank lending) and to fight the deflation by creating inflation. While on the other side we are being told that the unemployment rate is easing from an unprecedented 5.0% to 4.5%. So which one is true. It is true that Japanese economy has improved, it has come out of it's recession but it still faces several problems that may keep it from expanding, these are ŸConsumer demand is still weak - Between the years 18 and 18 household savings have decreased from 7.6% to 7.1 per cent. This means people have started spending more but still in low quantities. ŸUnemployment in Japan is at around 4.%. - Although temporary workers and one day contract workers have increased full time employees have been laid off more. ŸCorporations continue to restructure themselves. - The Japanese are adopting a more American industry. The relationship between workers and employers and the management is changing. This change is also a factor to the improvement of the economy. So what exactly pulled Japan out of its recession. One of the major factors is the low interest rate (montary policy) that encouraged people to save less and spend more thereby creating demand. By creating demand they initiated the circular flow of income. What this means is that households had more money which they spent on products and because there was demand once again the factories started producing, this led to the need for workers and the workers were paid wages which could then be spent. The other reason is major Government intervention, through fiscal policy. Although this large spending by the government to create aggregate demand to keep the economy alive worked, it has increased the countries national debt which has to be paid off and not only that but this active implementation of fiscal policy has created a fiscal deficit. So far the damage created by the fiscal deficit has been non-existent but because of the increased debt public spending may later become strained especially if interest rates increase and people stop spending money once again. Then where will the government get the money from. This fiscal policy can serve also as a mask over the economy because it is hard to estimate in how much trouble it really is if artificial demand is created. The government has spent $1 trillion US on their "stimulus" budget and $500 billion to help sustain their banking system. Apart from the government intervention the recession has caused the Japanese to rethink their whole management structure. This now means instead of the rest of Europe trying to model themselves on Japan, Japan has started to model itself on the Western way of running a company. More specifically the American way. One of these tactics is restructuring where the "social contract" between companies and their employees has been revamped. So out goes the loyalty and hard work from the workers and the employers no longer offer life long jobs. This in turn has the effect on households to rethink their financing. Because jobs are easier to gain or loose money is much more carefully managed. The effect is drastic, even peoples holiday locations and benefits are affected by this change. Like with most economies it was true with Japan when they went into their recession their imports became low and their exports increased. This is because of the recession it became cheaper for other countries to purchase from Japan and it became more expensive for Japan to purchase from abroad, the yen was very weak. Now that they are breaking out of their recession their trade, their imports and exports have increased (although it is more common for exports to decrease) with Asia. They are trading far more in IT equipment which may prove to be their saviour, their trade with China has also increased in textiles products. Japan took some very strong and drastic spending to recover its economy which has caused them a fiscal deficit, The Government has relied far too heavily on their fiscal policy which helped them out now but what about later. And although they did use monetary policy (lowering interest rates) to increase spending it had little effect. Their companies are going through a major "reconstruction" which will affect their "fixed expenses" and affect the unemployment for the worse in the short term. In Japans case government intervention has had a positive effect and without it the economy would have certainly gone in a major slump but in the end the government is not powerful enough to sustain the economy by itself, it needs help. This help should come in the form of the businesses that make up the economy. It is a good thing that the Japanese firms are looking outside of what they know because it can only lead to improvement. A mixed economy is a right economy.

Hate me, do you? Well my pretties, I have a little surprise for you. Read on if your prepared to read a tale of how one lion cub lived a long life in the shadow of his older brother who had it all a wife, a son, many admirers EVERYTHING I WANTED. Then to see his brother become King as he struggled to live off antelope bones and be clothed in rags and, what was to become of him? He fell in with the wrong crowd. Sorry dearest brother (may your gold encrusted soul lay in peace), but its about time people knew the truth, the WHOLE truth.

The Sun rose over the enchanting African plains, showcasing the beauty unforeseen by the human race the animal kingdom. Trees and plants open up to the call of the Sun, and animals wake to the warm breeze blown throughout the midsummer air. It was that kind of weather, which made you crave a cool, mud-ridden waterhole, and the kind of weather to wake me up. I flicked open my eyes, to be spellbound by the Sun, staring at me. I separated my dry lips to open my jaw, followed by a great, big yawn. Now I felt rather woken, I decided to arch my back;

"Purrr" ah, what a relief. Each of the bones in my back felt warmed up, now time for my daily yoga routine… WHAT?!? You think I'm in such good shape naturally? Naïve, I say!

After rolling around on the wheat scratching my back for about twenty minutes or so, I was awoken from my daydream, which consisted of me rescuing a scantily clad Cinderella from a burning tower, mmm. My I was angry you could've boiled a pot of stew on the heat coming out of me. Gritting my teeth, I opened my eyes, in rhythm to having twigs pushed into my back, "What the…" I growled, only to see a neatly groomed specimen of a lion staring down at me a long golden silky body of fur and a dark brown mane, which looked as though it had just been shaved sort of stubbly. Mufasa. That's my brother although I'm pretty sure you already know that, seen as though he is a saviour oh, how you've been fooled!

"Where were you?" he growled, in his deep voice, which you could imagine would fill up the Grand Canyon with one word, covering me with saliva. I lifted my paw and wiped my face in a tedious manner;

"Sorry?" I questioned,

"Simba's unveiling?" replied Oh Great One in a sarcastic sort of way, to question me but to also inform me. This was news to me. After a second pause, which gives away the thought that now, I would give Mufasa a lie.

"Ah, well you see old fellow," and I was off, watch me go; "I did actually make it, I was standing between the Zebra party and the Warthog party, although I must admit it was hard to see the Zebra, due to the fact that we lions are colour blind as you know," digging myself deeper with explanations which would show that I was making things up as I went, "anyway, I was late, so I didn't have time to make it up to Pride Rock to speak with you." Phew, I know I may make it sound as though I hate Mufasa, but really, he does intimidate me, a bit, not much mind you, just a bit…

"Why were you late? It's unacceptable to be late to your own nephews' unveiling to the world, so the world can see him? What would be possibly more important than that?" There you go, well done Mufasa, he cornered me, and I obviously hadn't thought my lie through.

"Mufasa, bro, mate" I was now trying to warm up to him, talking to him in rhythm, slowing down with each reference to him, "Y'see, when I heard about Simba's unveiling, I decided to visit Dad's grave. As a new life began, it felt that someone needed to pay their respects to him, and I guessed that, that person should be me". WOW! Well done me! Not that I should be proud of lying, but still it worked out well.

Seen as though I'm telling you the REAL story, I was simply having a lay in I was tired hung over. Those Meercats really do know how to drink! I'm not a serial liar, I don't even like to call it lying, I stretched the truth a bit. I really am an extrovert at heart, seriously!

Anyway, after we walked and talked for a few minutes, he took me to see Simba. I knew this was my nephew, and if the family curse were anything to go by, he would soon be my responsibility. Oh, you don't know about the family curse do you? Well, about a century ago, a lioness cursed my great grandfather whom he was sleeping with on the side. He lied to her and said she's the only one for him, etc. and well basically she found out he was married and had 4 cubs. Little did Jeffrey know the lioness he was getting his leg over just happened to practice black magic. Not good. Using all these potions and herbs and weird language she cursed him with the following;

Any King from the Smith family whom has a male cub as their first cub,

Will die within a year of the cubs' birth.

Terrifying. The fact that this had only ever actually happened once, I don't know why I was worried.

So there I was, standing at the back of the warm and well-lit cave in which they lived, nervous. It felt like I could feel my bloody going around my veins. Mufasa handed me a small, cute little package; Simba. Wrapped in a blanket, I could see these tiny little paws holding onto the edge of the blanket, with a cute nose poking out of the top, just below too beady eyes which looked eager to learn, although they already looked as if they contained wisdom. I felt choked up, but more importantly I felt love.

Five months passed, and well to be honest, Simba was just another cub. I don't mean that in a nasty way but I hardly saw him. Still, seeing this relationship brewing with Nala was lovely. Nala was the daughter of Simba's mothers' best friend. A gorgeous cub, small, light golden colour fur and bright blue eyes. I really shouldn't admit this but I did used to wonder what she'd look like in her teenage years…

Anyway! I was low. Lower than low can be. My friends were decreasing rapidly; none of the lionesses were interested in me - due to my hideous scar, I just felt alone.

The Gambler

I remember the day like it was yesterday. Mainly, because it was one of the worst days in my life. I had a really easy and nice life without any family trouble, school trouble, or even trouble with the law, but that doesn't mean that my life is perfect. Threw high school I was always known as the school bookie or just simply the gambler. I always won and when I lost at anything it would be a surprise to everyone. I was never a exceptional athlete or a straight A student, and I was always a little too cocky for the girls. But I was incredible at gambling, the closet thing to a sure thing around. I could beat people at sports that are way better just because there was money at stake, and to be honest those people probably came to expect that. I could read just about anyone in a card game and could handicap a sporting event like no other. But the reason why I say this is because I would bet small and just win almost all my bets a little at a time. I like to think I used to win 80 to 85% of my bets. So obviously if I made enough small bets I could make

a lot of money. To tell you the sick truth of this I was making more money gambling, then most of my friends working. But everything is not perfect always, trust me.

Do my essay on what CHEAP !

My best friend and I are big soccer fans and the World cup was about to get under way. So being compulsive gamblers we thought we should place a wager on the first game. It put the defending World Cup champions France, the favorite to go back to back against Senegal. "Senegal!" Mind you Senegal were making their World Cup debut. A small country from Africa who barely qualified for the tournament was going to take on the defending World champs. To put things into perspective I didn't even know that they were from Africa and I know just about anything and everything about sports. So I was like you know I'll bet like fifty bucks or something. But my friend Ryan Mason had a different idea. My friend to make a long story short is one of the most degenerate gamblers you will ever meet. Which means he's down right terrible, disrespected by everyone. A person who loses, but can't stop trying, and in effect loses more. Ryan wanted to bet enough on the game to get out of debt with me from previous gambling experiences. So I thought you know what I'm in too we'll bet this game big for the payday. As I told you before I never made big bets but that was all about to change.

We each laid six hundred and twenty five dollars to win two hundred and eighty five. Why we had to put more than double to win that amount because of how much of a favorite they were. So we had the big bucks on the team that couldn't be stopped by anyone in the last four years. The main thing that was going threw my mind was what I was going to do with the money I won. I never liked betting big figures, but a sure thing is a sure thing isn't it? So the night before I placed the bet with bookie I got a

good nights sleep. The game started at 700 o'clock in the a.m. because it was played in Japan, the time difference had me up at six. I told my parents I had an early golf tee time and went to my friends house to watch the game. I told my parents I had an early tee time so they would understand why I would be waking up at six in the summer time. So I'm sitting in Ryan's living room in a very comfortable lazy boy with a coke watching the pregame show. We were discussing guy stuff not worried at all about the game. So seven o'clock came around and a France win would make my life much happier. No shower or nothing I was barely a wake but the game was under way. We got a very slow start to say the least. The game was in the twenty- fifth minute and a player named David Trezeguet from France hit the goal post. So our celebrations were not yet awoken. Soccer games go ninety minutes so we weren't nervous yet. But a little time after the shot off the post a man from Senegal got a turnover and proceeded his way down the field to the France net. I can just remember saying f$$$ as he stole the ball. Well that curse was followed by many more as Senegal scored the games first goal off a broken play. The goalie for the French had the ball in his grasp after the man from Senegal crossed it into the box, but he could not hold on and the player stuffed it into the back of the net. So the rest of the first half finished and it was still one to nil. So during the half my friend was losing control because he couldn't afford to drop this game. I tried to calm him down but the only thing that would do that was involving a France win and our money coming in. Well that unfortunately never happened for us. Senegal played marvelous defense and the goalie played his butt off and the game ended at Senegal one and France zero. We were stunned and depressed over the outcome and couldn't believe our eyes. The game was called to be

the greatest upset in soccer history by the host of PTI a sports show on ESPN. Now to me the money wasn't the only thing I lost I could afford that. It was my pride and it was the

fact, that I did something that I said I would never do. Its kind of like Tiger Woods changing his golf swing or Michael Jordan changing his jump shot. If it isn't broke don't fix it. I was so good at what I was doing until I over bet and lost.

I ended up making all the money back and more and my friend said he was going to quit but he didn't and is still losing a lot of money. But that is not the only significance that it played on my life. Next time whether if it's in college or in business, when I get older I will stick to what I do good. I have to think out my decisions more before taking a risk. Knowing this will help me greatly in life. I know it sounds ridiculous to think you could lose six hundred dollars and gain something from it but I did. In life there are lessons to be learned everywhere and it's the people who learn them who will be successful. I'm not saying lose a lot of money and you'll be wiser, but if you slip up you have to be smarter the next time for it before feeling depressed and upset becomes a regular part of your life.

It seems as if most Latin novels and films are very infatuated with depicting strong and passionate love. Both "Like Water for Chocolate" and "Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon" represented love in its pure nature and in its various stages. In both literary works love was repressed by outside parties, Tita's love was repressed by Mama Elena and Gabriela's love was periodically suppressed by societal codes. The Latin writers and directors do a very good job in depicting the roller coaster ride called love. Both films accentuated the role of love and food in Latin society. Coincidentally both titles contain culinary references, which further accentuate the intensity of the love. While societal circumstances seemed to be absent from "Like Water for Chocolate", they often played a significant role in" Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon" .Although the novel "Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon" delivers a more potent form of social commentary then "Like Water for Chocolate", the two were inherently similar in so far as their major focus was love and the obstacles it faced.

The novel "Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon" contains two stories which occasionally intertwine. One story is that of the battle between the old forces who want to preserve Ilheus in its stagnant and backward state partially in fear that opening the harbor could make the region more vulnerable to new and radical ideas. The people on the other hand believed that trade would lead to a more enlightened society. A society where wealth would be better distributed amongst the people would shortly follow. This was an idea that didn't sit very well with the rich lords who already had hit the ceiling in respect to the money and power they can attain.. Things were very clearly defined in the old Ilheus culture, by the strength of the man and his heavy hand. This was evident by the opening scene where a man killed his wife for adultery and it was later speculated that he would be found innocent. The verdict was later announced in the end of the movie where the Doctor was found guilty. The opening of the harbor and the verdict served as a reflection of the changing times. Although battles ultimately took a backseat to the story of the passionate love shared by Mr. Nacib and Gabriela, Ilheus's social circumstance managed to affect the course their love was to take.A love which was very similar to the one shared by Pedro and Tita in "Like Water for Chocolate"

The social pressures faced by women post wedding under traditional Ilheus culture were very oppressive. The sentiments shared by women in those times were best described in the novel when Malvina swears that "The husbands were absolute masters and the wives were reduced to passive obedience. Worse then being a nun. She swore to herself, that she would never let herself be trapped" (Amado ). Malvina's defiance of societal codes leads her to get beaten and later leads her to exile. While these social laws were difficult on most women, it didn't seem to bother Gabriela because she was oblivious to them. Her childish attitude which was really accentuated in the film allowed her to lead the life she wished to lead. These pressures became clear to her only when she decided to marry Mr. Nacib. Marriage for women subsequently meant the forfeiting of their already limited rights. Marrying into high society thrust Tita into a new world where conformity meant survival. She couldn't understand why people would choose to go to lectures rather then circus's which were manifestly more fun. She loved being Mr. Nacib's cook and mistress but resented being his wife.

The role of social pressure in "Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon" in shaping the path Gabriela's and Mr.Nacibs relationship would take was very similar to the role Mama Elena played in obstructing the course Tita's and Pedro's love was to take. Mama Elena and social pressures both served as obstacles for the respective relationships in their quest to realize love under the circumstances which they elected. Subsequently the climax of love for both couples took place only after the obstacle was conquered.

The introduction of Gabriela into Mr. Nacib's world was only possible because of food. Gabriela's beauty extended far beyond her appearance, it went down to her hands and right to the food she made. The only conventional uses women had to men were to cook them dinner and then to later have sex with them. Her eminent beauty and her great ability to cook made her the object of affection for very man. She was the epitome of a great wife. Her exquisite beauty led to the hardships she faced as Mr. Nacib's wife, because Mr. Nacib's jealousy caused him to officially marry her, thus condemning her to a life of conformity. Married life was very miserable for Gabriela she began to see less and less of the person she deeply loved, and she was forced to act accordingly to the rules set for married woman. There love only went back to its original state following the nullification of the marriage. For them love was simplest and most enjoyable when it was love and not some pretentious act they put on for everybody else. When love becomes public it quickly gets tainted, that was something Gabriela's didn't understand and something Mr. Nacib was accustomed to. The glue of this relationship was the childish nature of Gabriela. The part I thing Mr. Nacib liked best about her unlike everything else in his life she was the only thing who didn't have any strings attached.

The affect of marriage on Gabriela was similar to the effect Rosaura's and Pedro's marriage had on Tita. They were both made miserable by the marriages and both marriages tormented them like nothing they had ever experienced. Tita lost the love of her life to her sister and had to see him everyday, while Gabriela lost the love of her life to social sanctions and social codes, and was forced to see him under circumstances which weren't suiting for her. The love shared by Tita and Gabriela were both of the same magnitude, and what ties them even closer is there innocent passion for life. They both faced tremendous hardships in their quest to realize true love, a love which had no strings attached a love which would transcend the boundaries of the physical world and all the obstacles it brings with it.
