The Gambler

I remember the day like it was yesterday. Mainly, because it was one of the worst days in my life. I had a really easy and nice life without any family trouble, school trouble, or even trouble with the law, but that doesn't mean that my life is perfect. Threw high school I was always known as the school bookie or just simply the gambler. I always won and when I lost at anything it would be a surprise to everyone. I was never a exceptional athlete or a straight A student, and I was always a little too cocky for the girls. But I was incredible at gambling, the closet thing to a sure thing around. I could beat people at sports that are way better just because there was money at stake, and to be honest those people probably came to expect that. I could read just about anyone in a card game and could handicap a sporting event like no other. But the reason why I say this is because I would bet small and just win almost all my bets a little at a time. I like to think I used to win 80 to 85% of my bets. So obviously if I made enough small bets I could make

a lot of money. To tell you the sick truth of this I was making more money gambling, then most of my friends working. But everything is not perfect always, trust me.

Do my essay on what CHEAP !

My best friend and I are big soccer fans and the World cup was about to get under way. So being compulsive gamblers we thought we should place a wager on the first game. It put the defending World Cup champions France, the favorite to go back to back against Senegal. "Senegal!" Mind you Senegal were making their World Cup debut. A small country from Africa who barely qualified for the tournament was going to take on the defending World champs. To put things into perspective I didn't even know that they were from Africa and I know just about anything and everything about sports. So I was like you know I'll bet like fifty bucks or something. But my friend Ryan Mason had a different idea. My friend to make a long story short is one of the most degenerate gamblers you will ever meet. Which means he's down right terrible, disrespected by everyone. A person who loses, but can't stop trying, and in effect loses more. Ryan wanted to bet enough on the game to get out of debt with me from previous gambling experiences. So I thought you know what I'm in too we'll bet this game big for the payday. As I told you before I never made big bets but that was all about to change.

We each laid six hundred and twenty five dollars to win two hundred and eighty five. Why we had to put more than double to win that amount because of how much of a favorite they were. So we had the big bucks on the team that couldn't be stopped by anyone in the last four years. The main thing that was going threw my mind was what I was going to do with the money I won. I never liked betting big figures, but a sure thing is a sure thing isn't it? So the night before I placed the bet with bookie I got a

Colosimo

good nights sleep. The game started at 700 o'clock in the a.m. because it was played in Japan, the time difference had me up at six. I told my parents I had an early golf tee time and went to my friends house to watch the game. I told my parents I had an early tee time so they would understand why I would be waking up at six in the summer time. So I'm sitting in Ryan's living room in a very comfortable lazy boy with a coke watching the pregame show. We were discussing guy stuff not worried at all about the game. So seven o'clock came around and a France win would make my life much happier. No shower or nothing I was barely a wake but the game was under way. We got a very slow start to say the least. The game was in the twenty- fifth minute and a player named David Trezeguet from France hit the goal post. So our celebrations were not yet awoken. Soccer games go ninety minutes so we weren't nervous yet. But a little time after the shot off the post a man from Senegal got a turnover and proceeded his way down the field to the France net. I can just remember saying f$$$ as he stole the ball. Well that curse was followed by many more as Senegal scored the games first goal off a broken play. The goalie for the French had the ball in his grasp after the man from Senegal crossed it into the box, but he could not hold on and the player stuffed it into the back of the net. So the rest of the first half finished and it was still one to nil. So during the half my friend was losing control because he couldn't afford to drop this game. I tried to calm him down but the only thing that would do that was involving a France win and our money coming in. Well that unfortunately never happened for us. Senegal played marvelous defense and the goalie played his butt off and the game ended at Senegal one and France zero. We were stunned and depressed over the outcome and couldn't believe our eyes. The game was called to be

Colosimo 4

the greatest upset in soccer history by the host of PTI a sports show on ESPN. Now to me the money wasn't the only thing I lost I could afford that. It was my pride and it was the

fact, that I did something that I said I would never do. Its kind of like Tiger Woods changing his golf swing or Michael Jordan changing his jump shot. If it isn't broke don't fix it. I was so good at what I was doing until I over bet and lost.

I ended up making all the money back and more and my friend said he was going to quit but he didn't and is still losing a lot of money. But that is not the only significance that it played on my life. Next time whether if it's in college or in business, when I get older I will stick to what I do good. I have to think out my decisions more before taking a risk. Knowing this will help me greatly in life. I know it sounds ridiculous to think you could lose six hundred dollars and gain something from it but I did. In life there are lessons to be learned everywhere and it's the people who learn them who will be successful. I'm not saying lose a lot of money and you'll be wiser, but if you slip up you have to be smarter the next time for it before feeling depressed and upset becomes a regular part of your life.

It seems as if most Latin novels and films are very infatuated with depicting strong and passionate love. Both "Like Water for Chocolate" and "Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon" represented love in its pure nature and in its various stages. In both literary works love was repressed by outside parties, Tita's love was repressed by Mama Elena and Gabriela's love was periodically suppressed by societal codes. The Latin writers and directors do a very good job in depicting the roller coaster ride called love. Both films accentuated the role of love and food in Latin society. Coincidentally both titles contain culinary references, which further accentuate the intensity of the love. While societal circumstances seemed to be absent from "Like Water for Chocolate", they often played a significant role in" Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon" .Although the novel "Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon" delivers a more potent form of social commentary then "Like Water for Chocolate", the two were inherently similar in so far as their major focus was love and the obstacles it faced.

The novel "Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon" contains two stories which occasionally intertwine. One story is that of the battle between the old forces who want to preserve Ilheus in its stagnant and backward state partially in fear that opening the harbor could make the region more vulnerable to new and radical ideas. The people on the other hand believed that trade would lead to a more enlightened society. A society where wealth would be better distributed amongst the people would shortly follow. This was an idea that didn't sit very well with the rich lords who already had hit the ceiling in respect to the money and power they can attain.. Things were very clearly defined in the old Ilheus culture, by the strength of the man and his heavy hand. This was evident by the opening scene where a man killed his wife for adultery and it was later speculated that he would be found innocent. The verdict was later announced in the end of the movie where the Doctor was found guilty. The opening of the harbor and the verdict served as a reflection of the changing times. Although battles ultimately took a backseat to the story of the passionate love shared by Mr. Nacib and Gabriela, Ilheus's social circumstance managed to affect the course their love was to take.A love which was very similar to the one shared by Pedro and Tita in "Like Water for Chocolate"

The social pressures faced by women post wedding under traditional Ilheus culture were very oppressive. The sentiments shared by women in those times were best described in the novel when Malvina swears that "The husbands were absolute masters and the wives were reduced to passive obedience. Worse then being a nun. She swore to herself, that she would never let herself be trapped" (Amado ). Malvina's defiance of societal codes leads her to get beaten and later leads her to exile. While these social laws were difficult on most women, it didn't seem to bother Gabriela because she was oblivious to them. Her childish attitude which was really accentuated in the film allowed her to lead the life she wished to lead. These pressures became clear to her only when she decided to marry Mr. Nacib. Marriage for women subsequently meant the forfeiting of their already limited rights. Marrying into high society thrust Tita into a new world where conformity meant survival. She couldn't understand why people would choose to go to lectures rather then circus's which were manifestly more fun. She loved being Mr. Nacib's cook and mistress but resented being his wife.

The role of social pressure in "Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon" in shaping the path Gabriela's and Mr.Nacibs relationship would take was very similar to the role Mama Elena played in obstructing the course Tita's and Pedro's love was to take. Mama Elena and social pressures both served as obstacles for the respective relationships in their quest to realize love under the circumstances which they elected. Subsequently the climax of love for both couples took place only after the obstacle was conquered.

The introduction of Gabriela into Mr. Nacib's world was only possible because of food. Gabriela's beauty extended far beyond her appearance, it went down to her hands and right to the food she made. The only conventional uses women had to men were to cook them dinner and then to later have sex with them. Her eminent beauty and her great ability to cook made her the object of affection for very man. She was the epitome of a great wife. Her exquisite beauty led to the hardships she faced as Mr. Nacib's wife, because Mr. Nacib's jealousy caused him to officially marry her, thus condemning her to a life of conformity. Married life was very miserable for Gabriela she began to see less and less of the person she deeply loved, and she was forced to act accordingly to the rules set for married woman. There love only went back to its original state following the nullification of the marriage. For them love was simplest and most enjoyable when it was love and not some pretentious act they put on for everybody else. When love becomes public it quickly gets tainted, that was something Gabriela's didn't understand and something Mr. Nacib was accustomed to. The glue of this relationship was the childish nature of Gabriela. The part I thing Mr. Nacib liked best about her unlike everything else in his life she was the only thing who didn't have any strings attached.

The affect of marriage on Gabriela was similar to the effect Rosaura's and Pedro's marriage had on Tita. They were both made miserable by the marriages and both marriages tormented them like nothing they had ever experienced. Tita lost the love of her life to her sister and had to see him everyday, while Gabriela lost the love of her life to social sanctions and social codes, and was forced to see him under circumstances which weren't suiting for her. The love shared by Tita and Gabriela were both of the same magnitude, and what ties them even closer is there innocent passion for life. They both faced tremendous hardships in their quest to realize true love, a love which had no strings attached a love which would transcend the boundaries of the physical world and all the obstacles it brings with it.

Order custom research paper on Malcom X

the Autobiography of Malcolm X. Malcolm goes through many changes good

and

bad, and he makes decisions that will effect his whole prospective on

life.

Malcolm changes his ghetto lifestyle into one of the worlds most

influential people. Malcolm regretted his old hustling life, and using

girls

and drugs. When he gets caught and is put in jail he changes and goes

into

the religion of Muslim at this point Malcolm is still very racist

against all

white people and any religion other than his own. Through his religion

of

Muslim he travels to Mecca he sees that segregation does not work, and

being

together does. He starts to see that integration might work in the

States and

changes his whole view on his life and what he preaches to others. He

starts

to see that integration is the key of life. Malcolm X also known

as Red,

for his red hair. Was very into drugs during his younger life. Using

many

different types of drugs, and also using girls for sexually and

anything else

he could find a use for them He was always stealing, and doped u off

many

drugs. Red would also sell various drugs, people would call and he

would drop

off whatever they wanted. When Red met Sammy they became instant

friends.

Sammy influenced Red a lot into becoming a hustler. This is where many

problems started with Malcolm or Red at this time of his life. Red ran

into

trouble with a big time hustler West Indian Archie, he go into money

problems

which ended up Red owing West Indian Archie two hundred dollars. At

this

point of the book Red is so stressed out and does so many drugs this is

what

he has to say about it, †The amount of dope i put into myself within

the

next several hours sounds inconceivable” ( 1). There must be a slum

in

everyone's life where they only find happiness through using

drugs,other

substances and people. Malcolm grow up allot during this part of his

life

because he learns how to deal with nothing at times. Malcolm opens up

allot

in this chapters, he says things that many others would deny. He says

allot

of he lived his life and all the years he regretted what he did.

When Malcolm got caught is was put in jail. He had lots of time on

his

hands. He started to get very into the religion of Muslim he would

write

letters to Elijah Mohammed. He became a preacher at a temple in Harlem

and he

would preach how horrible â€white” people are and that the Christian

religion

is like devil worshipping. He makes several remarks relating whites

and

devils. On one of many situations Malcolm had handled, he talking to a

white

man. He says some of the most horrible thing you could call someone.

††The

devil white man” had he been relatively abstract, someone who we

Muslims

rarely actually came into contact with ,b ut now here was the devil in

the

flesh on the phone- with all of his calculating , cold eyed, self

righteous

tricks and nerve and gall. The voices questioning me became to me as

breathing living devils.” This is appalling what Malcolm has said to

someone

that is white. Malcolm is racist against whites and doesn't see that

he has

stooped to the lower person's level. Malcolm during this time is sick

and an

evil person to make comments about anyone based of the color of their

skin. I

don't understand how he thought this was the way to solve problem,

fight

violence with violence. The only result in that is a bigger problem.

Martin

Luther King Jr. solved his issue much better. Even though you might not

feel

what you are doing is really working because you are being peaceful

about it,

it really does. Then, people feel more comfort to open up about how

they feel

on the topic. The key to solve any problem is through peace. Martin

Luther

King Jr. was an amazing leader and he did many great things for this

country.

Making a bigger step in society for the better of everyone.

Malcolm goes to Mecca because in the Muslim religion you must fill

certain things such as praying everyday and thing like that. To make

your

true sacrifice, your compete commitment into becoming Muslim you must

take

the trip to Mecca. This was very important to Malcolm. What he saw

amazed

him, he couldn't believe that integration was working, and it was

peaceful.

When Malcolm saw this it completely changed his thoughts that

segregation was

the only way to go. He saw that integration was working in Mecca. He

felt

very strongly for Mecca, which help change his thoughts on segregation

and

ingration. When Malcolm was asked what he thought about Mecca and

everything

he saw he said,” The brotherhood ! The people all all races, colors,

from

all over the world coming together as one! †( 45). This change was

dramatic and changed my whole opinion on Malcolm X. This is a major

changing

point in Malcolm life. This is where he becomes more of a peaceful

leader,

and see the world is very different than he thought it was. It's

amazing how

Malcolm saw everyone being together in Mecca and changed his whole

prospective on how he feels about the world and the racism of the time.

Malcolm has proved he has changed his whole life. He when from

being a

thug on the streets selling drugs, using all different substances, and

women

abuses all of them. Then, when he gets caught and is put in jail, he

spent

his time learning about Muslim. Which starts to set him on a better

path

through life. When he starts to preach about how terrible white people

are

and the only way to have peace is through segregation. When he for

fills the

final phase in becoming a true Muslim, he takes a trip to Mecca. A

forbidden

place to all Muslim which is extremely holy to them. Malcolm sees there

is

integration, and it is working. Everyone no matter race, color, ethic

background everyone is together peacefully. Malcolm did something many

people

can not do, and he is amazing to do so.

To Kill a Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird is definitely an excellent novel in that

it portrays life and the role of racism in the 10's. A reader may

not interpret several aspects in and of the book through just the

plain text. Boo Radley, Atticus, and the title represent three such

Order Custom To Kill a Mockingbird paper

things.

Not really disclosed to the reader until the end of the book,

Arthur Boo Radley plays an important role in the development of

both Scout and Jem. In the beginning of the story, Jem, Scout, and

Dill fabricate horror stories about Boo. They find Boo as a character

of their amusement, and one who has no feelings whatsoever. They

tried to get a peep at him, just to see what Boo looked like. Scout

connects Boo with the Mockingbird. Mrs. Maudie defines a mockingbird

as one who …don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They

don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do

one thing but sing their hearts out for us (4). Boo is exactly

that. Boo is the person who put a blanket around Scout and Jem when

it was cold. Boo was the one putting gifts in the tree. Boo even

sewed up Jem's pants that tore on Dill's last night. Boo was the one

who saved their lives. On the contrary to Scout's primary belief, Boo

never harms anyone. Scout also realizes that she wrongfully treated

Boo when she thinks about the gifts in the tree. She never gave

anything back to Boo, except love at the end. When Scout escorts

Arthur home and stands on his front porch, she sees the same street

she saw, just from an entirely different perspective. Scout learns

what a Mockingbird is, and who represents one.

Arthur Radley not only plays an important role in developing

Scout and Jem, but helps in developing the novel. Boo can be divided

into three stages. Primitively, Boo is Scout's worst nightmare.

However, the author hints at Boo actually existing as a nice person

when he places things in the tree. The secondary stage is when Mrs.

Maudie's house burned to the ground. As Scout and Jem were standing

near Boo's house, it must have been rather cold. So, Boo places a

warm and snug blanket around Scout and Jem, to keep them warm. This

scene shows Boo's more sensitive and caring side of him, and shows

that he really has changed after stabbing his father. The last and

definitely most important stage is when he kills Bob Ewell to save

Scout and Jem. This stage portrays Boo as the hero and one who has

indefinitely changed his personality and attitudes. After the final

stage, Boo does not deserve to be locked up inside his house.

Atticus Finch is a man of strong morals. He follows them

exclusively, and does not hold up to the Finch family name, as defined

by Aunt Alexandria. Atticus is the most pure and good-hearted person

one may ever 'see.' Although it does not seem like it, Scout will

evolve into her father; Jem will not. Scout finally understand all

the things he says. For example, in the beginning Atticus tells

Scout, You never really understand a person until you consider things

from his point of view…until you climb into his skin and walk around

in it (4). She then realizes that Mrs. Caroline did not know

Maycomb, and could not just learn it in one day. Scout comes to terms

that it was wrong to become upset with Mrs. Caroline. Scout learns

several other lessons. For example, on page 4, Atticus says his

most important line in the book, …remember it's a sin to kill a

mockingbird. Through clarifications from Mrs. Maudie, Scout accepts

her father's words. Atticus also teaches his kids a lesson when he

defends Tom Robinson, an innocent black person. Although Atticus knew

from the instant he accepted the case that Tom had no chance, he had

to do his duty as an honest and impartial citizen of Maycomb. Atticus

poured his heart into defending Atticus, and did a damn fine job. He

taught his kids the right thing, that all individuals are created

equal. If Aunt Alexandria had raised Scout and Jem, they might have

not cried at the end of the trial; they would not want to hurt the

Finch family reputation. It was Atticus who received a standing

ovation from the Black's Balcony. It is because of Atticus' good

heart that Cals black church accepted the children. Atticus has

probably built a better name for his family than Aunt Alexandria would

have, had she lived with the Finches.

Before reading To Kill a Mockingbird, the title itself means

nothing. The title is the foundation of a house. It is just a slob

of cement, and cannot be interpreted. While reading the book, pieces

of wood fit together and the house starts to stand up. After reading

the book, the house is fully painted and decorated. The landscaping

is complete, and the house is beautiful. Several things and people

represent the Mockingbird throughout the novel. The understanding

of the Mockingbird can bee seen in three steps. The first step is

in chapter 10. Atticus tells Jem to never shoot a mockingbird,

because it causes no harm. At this point, neither Jem nor Scout

understand what Atticus is saying. Secondly, Scout finds a roly-poly

in chapter 5. In answer to Scout's desire to kill the bug, Jem says,

Because they don't bother you… (41). At this second stage, Jem,

not yet Scout, has understood Atticus' holy words. The last depiction

is in the final chapters of the book. This Mockingbird is Arthur

Boo Radley. Boo ends up to save both Jem and Scout's lives, by

killing Bob Ewell. At this final stage in the book, Scout, as well as

Jem, understands Atticus and his saying. Scout realizes life.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a very inspirational book. Not only is it a

book for pleasure, it shows us today how far we have come, and yet the

long journey ahead. Boo Radley and Atticus were very important

characters, for both the developments of kids in the book and reader.

The title is something that can be interpreted in many ways. Each

one will be different, based on the reader's philosophy and beliefs.

Personal barriers can inhibit our ability to think critically and the ability to make sound decisions. Some barriers such as depression, anger, passion and stress can lead to negative and even irrational thoughts. In my case, some of these barriers affected me when I was making one of the most significant decisions in my life.

About thirteen years ago I worked for a computer reseller that specialized in selling IBM hardware for export into Latin America. I was a salesman and was doing quite well earning a pretty good salary and commissions for a young urban professional. I was on top of the world, recently married to my wife and already expecting our first child. We decided that we needed to get out of the small apartment and began to look for our first home. Our search began and one of the first barriers I came up against was fitting the idea of the home we wanted into our budget. We wanted to be in the type of house that all of my colleagues and fellow salesmen where buying, the big 5 bedroom, bath home in the expensive neighborhood. How could we possibly buy something of lesser value? We would not fit in. We were more concerned about what others were going to think about us rather than thinking about a practical home to fit within our budget. Both of our parents quickly helped us to see the light.

After a couple of months of searching we finally found the perfect little three bedroom, two bath, starter home. It fit well within our budget and was going to only cost an extra $00 per month more than what we were paying for the apartment. The home was in a new development that was fittingly called My First Home development. The house was being built and would be ready right around Christmas time. We were so excited about the new home and could not wait for the day we would move in. We would drive over to the job site every night to take pictures of the house as it was being built. We still have those pictures today and often reminisce about the experience.

The time had come for the closing on our first home; it was going to take place the second week of January. During the last two or three months while we were waiting for our house to be built, things at the company that I was working for were becoming a little shaky. We had hit a slowdown and business was not going as good as it had in the prior months. My sales were still pretty good but as a whole, our company was going through some tough times. We were a franchise of a larger company and several of the other divisions had already been closed down. Stress is excessive demand upon the body or mind, producing physical or psychological strain (UOP, 1, p.8). I was beginning to feel the psychological affects of the stress I was under. The negativity was rampant throughout the office. The stress of Christmas, the new house, the fact that corporate could shut down our operation, all of this with the added thought of having to deal with this adversity when our baby was on the way, stressed me so much that it began to affect my health.

It was December 4th and we were scheduled to go in to the office and work a half a day and go home for the holidays. When I got to the office, I noticed the gloom had gotten pretty thick, you could almost cut it with a knife. I walked over to my cubicle to find a letter on my desk addressed to me. It was a letter from the company notifying me that the company was closing its doors and that I needed to remove my personal belongings and vacate the premises. I actually laughed out load, I thought it was a joke; I didnt want to believe that this was happening on Christmas Eve. The reality was it was not a joke, we all packed up our belongings and left.

That evening we were all meeting at one of the other salesmans home for Christmas Eve dinner. The sales team had over the last few years grown pretty close and spent quite a bit of time together. It was a depressing evening, one of the saddest that I can remember. We were all thinking about how we were going to deal with this and making plans to find new jobs. To be honest, this threw me into a deep depression. Here I was without a job, my wife four months pregnant, about to close on a new house, what was I going to do? The first thing that I thought was to cancel out on the house. I debated with my wife back and forth, she wanted to go through with it and I wanted to cancel. My depression had me feel that this situation was so hopeless that I never thought about finding a new job and going through with the house. I even began to think irrationally and wanted to start selling all of our belongings that had any value. My wife asked that I speak to a particular friend of mine that always had a positive affect on me, so I did. He told me that I should go through with it and that everything was going to work out. He lifted my spirits and focused me on the fact that I was a good salesman and that I could find another job paying me more than I was making at the last company. He told me that I had to do it for the little one on the way.

I pulled up my bootstraps and made the decision to go through with the house, even though I did not have a job. My wife was still working and she still had insurance coverage to cover our medical bills for when the baby came. Suddenly I began to think more clearly, I began to plan how I was going to explain my situation to the mortgage company in order to go through with the closing. I decided to act as if I was still employed and told them to contact me at home since I was going to be on vacation for two weeks prior to the closing. They had already gone through the employment verification process, etc.

The day finally came and we closed on our first home. It took me about two months, but I finally found a great job paying me more that I was making at my previous job (that friend of mine must be psychic). My son was born five months later and all was well.

Looking back to the decision that I had to make, I made the right one. With a little help from my wife and a friend, I was able to overcome my depression that was clouding my critical thinking abilities. Its amazing how stress and depression can have such a profound affect on our thinking abilities. Since then I have learned to deal with stress and have learned to manage it so that I do not let myself slip into depression. I cant say that I have not been depressed since, but I am now able to recognize it and have learned to pull myself out of it so that it does not affect my critical thinking.

The goals of the pro-family movement are, and should be very simple to continue to foster and promote the traditional family roles in American society so that it can and will maintain as a bedrock of civilization and the cornerstone of the great American experiment in self-government. The pro-family movement should concentrate on the continuance of instilling traditional Christian family values that this nation was founded upon. Our Founding Fathers who helped create a set of laws, in the Constitution, for which Americans could continue to support and adhere to traditional Christian values and religious principles. The biggest goal of the pro-family movement is to continue to propagate the message and belief that our Founding Fathers had for the original construction of American Constitutionalism and for our future construction as well. This message and doctrine in which the pro-family movement is geared toward can be carried out in variable channels and through various methods.

Some of our best known organizations such as the Christian Coalition and Focus on Family should be the staple for which the pro-family bases their message upon. These organizations focus primarily to gain political power first starting with grassroots efforts, which can put pressure on the political system once they are successful. Other examples of organizations which can further the goals of the pro-family movement are "limited purpose groups". Some of these groups are the Colorado for Family Values, and Take Bake Cincinnati. These groups are created to oppose gay rights initiatives. These groups also contain some great strategies for furthering the goals of the pro-family movement. These organizations raise money and constantly recruit activists, which can then by used for litigating, lobbying, and electioneering.

There are also three kinds of opposition that are ideal for advancing the pro-family movement and stopping any advancement for gay rights. These three oppositions are instrumental, reactive, and proactive. The first, instrumental, uses anti-gay campaigns to achieve political power. Its focus is to implement traditional morality and traditional family values. To achieve this goal, instrumental oppositions muster up resources to support organizations that have the same ideology with traditional values and that also have a stake and a voice in American politics. One of the most common forms of instrumental opposition is through direct mail fundraising. By doing this, instrumental groups effectively raise money and raise activist support. These activists within these organizations that support the pro-family movement can create grassroots campaigns that can eventually move all the way to Capitol Hill creating a larger and more powerful "Pro-Family Team".

The second type of opposition created to help stop the gay movement can be classified as reactive opposition. Reactive opposition is known as more of a defensive strategy against gay rights advocates. Most of the battles are fought in response to advances the gay rights groups have made and proposals that have also been made. Once any gay rights group has proposed or promoted a change through legislative channels, then it is the job and mission for reactive opposition groups to put pressure on public officials to reverse and changes that have been in favor for gay rights groups. Moreover, to reiterate the larger theme of a "traditional" American society with "traditional" family values. These reactive groups can gain support from other religious groups, conservatives, and business communities. School boards are also a focus for reactive opposition groups, which can benefit them by getting national attention at times, which ultimately gets the support of anti-gay and general purpose groups. In conclusion, reactive opposition needs to continue its efforts and strategies since it has in fact been very successful overall.

The last type of opposition is proactive. The best way of looking at proactive opposition is exactly what it stands for, being proactive. The general theme of proactive opposition is that "a good defense, is a well executed and damaging offense". The goal of proactive opposition is to stop the expansion of gay rights by taking away the political opportunities through propaganda and legal restrictions. One effective example of proactive opposition was the money spent on advertisements that went on several nation wide newspapers. These advertisements created much controversy due to their messages to convert homosexuals to heterosexuals. However, the ads also had a political message that was clear "Homosexuality was an individual choice, not a personal condition, and thus not deserving any legal protection." (1) Other ways that can further the success of the pro-family movement can be to stop funding official state liberalism, which promotes the agenda of gay-rights activists. Examples of the organizations that fund this liberalism are the Puclic Broadcasting System, the National Endowment for the Arts and other similar organizations.

It is true that most antigay initiatives fail and the ones that do succeed are in fact struck down by courts most of the time. However, the reason that the pro-family movement should continue with its persistency because small initiative processes "provide political entrepeneurs to begin to mobilize support and build political capital". These initiative processes then allow for non-mainstream politicians and other entrepeneurs a chance to gain access to political resources which can then create more media attention. By attracting more media attention, and creating more channels to be heard from, these politicians create a better chance to be funded by these corporations that are listening and receive contributions. In turn, these contributions allows for these pro-family groups to collect a sufficient amount of capital so that they can continue with future political battles.

Body modification and adornment is a universal culture. All civilizations have attempted to change their body in order to fulfill their cultural construct of beauty, religious and/or social obligations. Body adornment and modification is a very broad subject, ranging from ceremonial body paint to the amputation of appendages. In modern society many people today are looking more like tribal warriors of many African cultures. In fact many of these modifications actually do come from many ancient cultures. So why is body modification just now coming to the attention of the modern world? It is my belief that a greater amount of young adults are finding that imitating traditions of primitive cultures is an excellent way to express themselves. However, the quest for non-conformity is not the only reason people change their appearance. Dissatisfaction with ones appearance and fascination with alteration is also reason for one to modify their body.

A piercing can be defined as any object, intentionally left in the body, for which there is no physiologically functional purpose, and must have be placed in an event which took a conscious decision. Historically, piercing has had a long history in Europe, with references dating back to the Roman Empire. Soldiers in Caesars army pierced their nipples, while male members of the Victorian Court wore Prince Albert piercings (piercing of the genitalia) as a dressing ring, and was used to secure the penis to either leg with a string or thong, to suit the fashion at the time. Pants were cut very closely at the crotch, and would make the male genitalia very pronounced. I asked several men in an online chat room that had the same piercings mentioned above and typically their response was due to fascination or for sexual pleasure.

When viewed as a material aspect of our culture, popular piercing is an attempt to create an alien other Something to shock and disconcert An attempt to break out of the biological and cultural confines that limit the range of personal self-expression.

Earlobe piercing is the most socially acceptable form of body piercing in industrialized countries. Modern ear adornments include the conch, the tragus, and two innovative cartilege piercings, the daith and the rook, which were introduced by California body piercer Erik Dakota. Other popular piercings in todays society include the navel, tongue, lip, eyebrow, and the nose. These are usually used to express ones eccentricity and individuality.

Ear piercings are most widely practiced piercings among cultural groups in Africa, India, Indonesia, North and South America. In some third world countries ear piercings mark the life stages of an individual and to signify group affiliation. Ear cartilege piercings, especially popular among the Masai and Fulani, also emphasized beauty and wealth. Stretched earlobes are dominant among groups in Indonesia and South America. Stretched earlobes have increased in popularity among modern piercing enthusiasts. I noticed four men with stretched earlobes in about an hour time period on a recent trip to Philadelphias South Street. I also observed over two-dozen shops on this one particular street in which piercings and tattoo services were offerd.

Henna, also known as mehndi, is the painting of the body using temporary ink (usually a dark orange color) made from the herb henna, widely used in the Middle East. Its origins date back to 1700 B.C. in the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures. The patterns of henna painting vary from culture to culture. There are three main traditions that can be recognized, aside from the modern use of henna as a trendy temporary tattoo. Generally, Arabic (Middle-eastern) mehndi features large, floral patterns on hands and feet, while Indian (Asian) mehndi uses fine line, lacy, floral and paisley patterns covering entire hands, forearms, feet and shins; and African mehndi art is large, and bold with geometrically patterned angles. African mehndi patterns usually use black henna while Asian and Middle Eastern mehndi is often reddish brown. It is also a common custom in many countries to step into the mehndi, or simply apply the paste without creating a pattern in order to cool, protect, or treat the skin. This practice is rapidly growing in popularity because it is easy, temporary, and inexpensive.

Tattoo as defined in Websters Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary is an indelible mark or figure fixed upon the body by insertion of pigment under the skin or by production of scars. Archaeologists were able to date the first tattoo somewhere between 4000 and 000 B.C. They have also found evidence on Libyan figures from the tomb of Seti which dates back to 10 B.C.

Primitive people used body paint, scarification, and/or tattooing for wars, different klans and family purposes. Polynesian tattooing, as it existed before the arrival of Europeans in the South Pacific, was the most artistic tattooing in the ancient world. Some believed that they would be sent to the spiritual world that belonged in and obtain a more profitable occupation in the spirit world. They also believed that with the tattooing they could more easily find family and tribal friends. Tattooing was introduced into our society approximately sixty years ago, and is now said to be one of the most popular ways in expressing ones self.

Amputation of body parts is yet another form of body modification. According to an article in Body Modification Ezine magazine, If you are into amputation from a body modification point of view, you are probably looking for one or more of the following a personal statement, an antisocial statement, or group identification. In an interview with a man that goes by the name of No Hand he stated, It is not just the amputation that you have to be in love with, but it is the whole dynamic of being an amputee that you need to embrace. Amputation is one of the most extreme body modifications possible. The person who wishes to receive them does most of the amputations themself. Fascination with amputation is often attributed with dysmorphophobia (the fear of deformity). This is a psychological problem in which people, which are dissatisfied with their own body, cut off parts until satisfied.

In conclusion, people today, primarily in there teens and twenties, are primarily looking to distinguish themselves from the uniformity of modern society. Body modification is the tool that these young adults use to express their individuality. However, as body modification becomes more popular, it becomes contradicting. The youth of modern society are using tribal customs to express diversity but in actuality are forming monotony within their own social group
