"A very Old Man with Enormous Wings"

by

Gabriel Garcia MarquezMagical Realism, is chiefly style or genre originating in Latin America that combines fantastic or dreamlike elements of realism. The term was first applied in the 10 to a school of painters, and is used to describe the prose fiction of originally Luis Borges, as well as writers such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Laura Esquivel. Both writers Marquez and Esquivel interweave, in an ever-shifting pattern, a sharply etched realism in representing ordinary events and descriptive details together with fantastic and dreamlike elements. Both writes use this technique to both tell a story and truly express feelings, like love. Magical Realism allows a writer to step beyond the boundaries of realism to express a feeling, without stepping completely over to fiction. Lets look at few pieces of literature that uses Magical Realism, first "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings", by Marquez, and second "Like Water for Chocolate, by Esquivel.

Marquez's "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" fulfills every characteristic of Magical Realism. This short story was first published in 155, and includes man aspects, which may be described as magical. In the story, and old man with a very poor set of wings is found and kept as a pet for several years. These wings were described by the doctor as "…so natural on that completely human organism that he couldn't understand why other men didn't have them, too"(charters 0). Marquez does not stop with the man with wings, but goes on to add to the story, the tale of the lady spider. The lady spider had the body of a tarantula and the head of a young girl. She was transformed to this state after sneaking out of her parent's home to attend a dance. The lady spider takes away the mans mob of spectators, leaving him ordinary in that he is still around even after his fifteen minutes of fame are over. This story has other elements of magic elements. For example, the overabundance of crabs, an infestation so bad, that the smell alone makes the baby sick.

Early I mentioned the detailing words used to express magic and feelings. In this story Marquez's use of numbers also seems magical in a sense. The story itself takes place on the third day of rain, not simply when it is raining outside. Father Gonzaga arrives before seven o'clock in the morning, not just early. And Marquez express feelings by saying, "The world was sad since Tuesday" (Charters 04). This describes the mood of the people as not only sad, but extraordinarily sad and for a space of time as well.

In this story the magical elements are treated as though they are everyday occurrences or at least somewhat expectable. The characters reacts to the old man with wings as one reacts to an out of the ordinary person, however once the novelty has passed, the man becomes ordinary.

Magical Realism has two sides, the magic and the realistic. In this story it realistic that the family holding the angle sells tickets for admission to see the angle in order to better their financial standing. The mobs that abandon the old man are very fickle, just like Tennessee fans are in reality; they desert their team for another. The lady spider is the new better team. And the old man might have better luck next year.

Marquez uses many other examples of Magic and Realism in this story, but let's look at another story. Let's look at "Like Water for Chocolate" by Laura Esquivel. Esquivel published this story in 18, she is from Mexico, and this was her first novel. She uses a number a magical elements mixed with real to life feelings and problems. The real part first, in the story there are three daughters, the youngest being Tita. Tita falls in love with a man named Pedro, but isn't allowed to marry him. Pedro feels the same way about Tita, and will do anything he can to be close to her. So, Perdo decides to marry Tita's sister Rosaura. This might seemed far fetched, but it is not magically part of the story. The magical part comes in a little later, for example when Tita is making Rosaura's wedding cake while thinking of Pedro and begins to cry. She drops a single tear into the meringue of the wedding cake, and through her feels ruins the cake and makes everyone sick. Another quick mention of magical elements is when the girl Gertrudis was sweating pink sweat that smelled like roses, a lovely strong smell (5).

Both authors do a very good job of conveying the feeling of their characters using magical elements while present a true to life story. This style of writing is not a new genre, it has been around for nearly 85 years, and is now being used by much more that just Latin Authors. It is a strong way to express feelings while telling a story, and the style is being adopted by many authors throughout the world.
