The first characteristic of competence that Daria filled was range of behavior. She had two very distinct behavioral patterns, which was the well behaved, friendly girl and the tough girl. She had the ability to decide which behavior best fit each environment. The nice and friendly side was let out when she was at school. Then the tough girl behavior came out as she rode the bus back to her neighborhood. She was quite skillful at performing the behaviors. Daria had everything planned out; wearing a dress to school and on the ride home she would put on a black jacket, hardened her face, and toughened her speech (Adler and Towne 7).
Then there is cognitive complexity, which is the ability to understand things from another person's point of view (Adler and Towne 5). By Daria looking in a different point of view while at school, it enabled her to stay out of trouble and be accepted by her classmates at Beckford Elementary School. There is also the other environment, her South Central Los Angeles neighborhood, where she was also accepted because she knew how to act and talk when around this particular group of people.

One way of her monitoring herself is not getting in trouble at school, speaking proper English, and her appearance. By learning to adapt, she not only earned acceptance in both places, but became a competent communicator.
